The violet storm still coils around the enchanted cloud dais, thunder rolling over the kingdoms as the two Delfariuses remain together above the world.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Well, I guess you should return to your time, hmm?

Past Delfarius

Past Delfarius

I suppose I should, though I had intended to spend the next few hours showing you exactly what I plan to do before I leave.

Before he can continue, shadow and smoke burst across the Obsidian Tower balcony. Pistol pops into existence beside the railing, her mechanical squirrel clinging tightly to her shoulder.

Pistol

Pistol

Hello, two Delfariuses! Delfari? Hmm?

Delfarius

Delfarius

So much for quiet.

Past Delfarius throws back his head and laughs as lightning flashes behind all three of them. Pistol waves cheerfully through the fading smoke, while the storm waits for whatever comes next.

"Oh Pistol. How did you get up here this time?" I sigh with a small amusement. Past Delfarius remarks how there is no Stabby then looks around to ensure there is no Stabby. Pistol tells us why she is up here at the Obsidian Tower and how she got there.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Oh, Pistol. How did you get up here this time?

You sigh with small amusement as the storm curls around the balcony. Pistol beams beside the railing, her mechanical squirrel gripping her shoulder.

Past Delfarius

Past Delfarius

There is no Stabby. I should verify that before anything else.

Past Delfarius circles the balcony with exaggerated suspicion, peering behind pillars and beneath the railing while lightning briefly silhouettes the empty spaces.

Pistol

Pistol

Stabby is safe in Oakhaven! I came because the squirrel found a mirror-path that tasted like your tower. Then the storm pulled me the rest of the way.

Pistol

Pistol

I wanted to see the two-Delfarius sky show, and I brought news! The hidden chamber under the alley is humming again, and something inside keeps whispering your name.

The mechanical squirrel chitters and points one tiny paw toward the violet cloud. Pistol looks from one Delfarius to the other, delighted by the interruption she has caused.

Be amused by Pistol wanting to see the sky show

I look to Past Delfarius with the same amused and inappropriate look on our faces. We look over to the young Pistol then back at each other and just break out laughing. "Maybe when you are much older." I say in between laughs. Past Delfarius remarks how it would not be right for her to watch up close and personal considering....Pistol asks innocently why.

Delfarius

Maybe when you are much older.

Past Delfarius

Past Delfarius

Quite. It would hardly be right for her to watch anything so close and personal, considering her age, her innocence, and the way she repeats everything.

Pistol

Pistol

Why? I can keep secrets! Mostly. Is it because the sky show is only for important people?

Past Delfarius hides a grin behind his cup. With a small gesture, he folds the storm into harmless violet ribbons, turning the private spectacle into a dazzling aurora above Oakhaven.

Past Delfarius

Past Delfarius

Exactly. This is a very exclusive display, and you have already earned the safer version. Besides, your squirrel has found us a path worth investigating.

Pistol

Pistol

The safer version is still pretty! And the mirror-path is open now. It leads straight to the humming chamber, if you promise not to laugh at my squirrel.

Past Delfarius

I am perfectly fine with coffee to go. Some traditions deserve to survive every timeline.

He sets the cup aside, raises one hand, and opens a violet portal beside the balcony. Through it waits his rightful time, bright with familiar stormlight.

Try not to let the child find anything too catastrophic before I return.

Past Delfarius steps through with a final amused glance. The portal folds shut behind him, leaving only a fading violet seam and the smell of cooled coffee.

Pistol

Pistol

He left! Does that mean the important people show is over, or can we go see what my squirrel found?

The mechanical squirrel chitters toward the balcony’s shadow, where a narrow mirror-path opens like a silver wound and the hidden chamber’s hum rises through it.

I lift Rocket off of my shoulder and let the mechanical squirrel climb back onto Pistol's shoulder. I smirk. "Well I am still an important person, so hmm.." I pause and clear my throat instead of continuing. "Yes, let's go somewhere else besides my very private Obsidian Tower." I make a mental note to myself to look into this mirror that showed her the way and give her mechanical squirrel a look. Repine walks out of my shadow and sniffs up at the squirrel to assess if it is a danger.

Delfarius clears his throat, and the violet aurora ripples across the balcony. Pistol beams while Rocket chitters proudly from her shoulder.

Delfarius

Delfarius

That mirror showed her the way here. I will inspect it later.

Repine steps from Delfarius’s shadow, inky paws silent against the stone. He raises his glowing blue eyes and sniffs toward Rocket.

Pistol

Pistol

He is friendly! Mostly. He only bites things that look suspicious, or shiny, or interesting.

Repine circles once, scenting the squirrel’s gears and shadow-trace, then gives a quiet huff of approval. The mirror-path widens, and Delfarius, Pistol, Rocket, and Repine pass through into Oakhaven’s humming hidden chamber.

Repine looks up at Pistol after he gives her a though look over and sniff. Pistol is amused and likes shadow doggy and asks if it has a name. "This is Repine. He is a good faithful friend, like Rocket is to you I would imagine." Pistol asks if she can have a shadow doggy in the future. I look at the room in front of me and try to figure out what is going on with this room that is saying my name. "Uh umm mayhaps." I say to Pistol as I look.

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -1)

Repine lifts his inky head toward Pistol, gives her an assessing sniff, and flicks one shadowed ear. Rocket chitters proudly from her shoulder.

Aww, shadow doggy! Does he have a name?

Pistol

Pistol

Can I have a shadow doggy in the future? A really big one, with glowing eyes?

Delfarius

Delfarius

Uh, umm, mayhaps.

Delfarius studies the chamber. The humming walls are not speaking aloud: every stolen secret is etched into their stone, and his name appears wherever the room has catalogued his passage.

The mechanism reveals its purpose beneath the hum. It has awakened to Delfarius as Oakhaven’s claimed keeper, repeating his name to sort every hidden route, bargain, and threat beneath the city. The whispering is an index, not a summons.

Identify the source of the chamber's disturbance

I narrow my eyes and pierce through the void with my sight to see if this is from the cursed veil or from the mechanism I left below the city that is collecting hopes and fears from the mortals above. I do this without Pistol noticing. Repine is looking up at me sympathetically and pleading as Pistol gives him lots of pets and remarks about him.

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +1)

Delfarius narrows his eyes and lets Void Sight slip beneath the chamber’s humming stone, careful enough that Pistol notices nothing beyond his usual watchfulness.

Delfarius

Delfarius

The cursed veil is not feeding this chamber. The current rises from the mechanism below, carrying Oakhaven’s gathered hopes and fears.

The void reveals layered channels beneath the floor, each carrying mortal longing upward into the index. His name is stamped across the mechanism as keeper, not source.

A second pattern becomes clear: the chamber sorts every hope against its answering fear, preserving both as routes, bargains, and warnings beneath the city.

Pistol

Pistol

He really likes you, Repine! Look at those glowing eyes. Maybe he is secretly smiling.

Pistol rubs Repine’s shadowed ears with enthusiastic affection. The hound endures it, but keeps his blue gaze fixed on Delfarius with sympathetic pleading.

Pistol

Pistol

Do you think the chamber likes him too? It keeps whispering his name like it wants to show him something.

I am a bit amazed and startled that Pistol heard this. I send the hopes and the corresponding answering fear to my Endless Archives to be inscribed into Tomes unseen or unfelt by Pistol. I need to either check this more often or make a syphon to do this for me. I think to my thoughts alone. To Pistol I look around surprised. "Hmm I don't hear anything." I make sure the mechanism is silent and not asking for me or anyone else at that moment. Pistol looks around, listens and then remarks on what she notices at that moment. Repine bounds nearer to my legs relieved that he is no longer under Pistol's scrutiny.

Delfarius

He turns slowly through the chamber, Void Sight tracing every channel and etched name. The mechanism falls silent, addressing neither Delfarius nor any other presence.

Pistol

I hear the humming, but it stopped whispering. Maybe it was only showing you the secret parts.

Pistol cups a hand around one ear and listens toward the floor. No summons follows, no name rises, and the hidden routes settle into an orderly, dormant pulse.

Repine bounds nearer and presses against Delfarius’s legs, relieved to escape Pistol’s enthusiastic attention. His blue eyes remain fixed on the quiet mechanism.

A small whirl stirs beside his ear. Rocket’s clipped thoughts brush his awareness: a hidden brass key, a warm trail beneath the chamber, and Pistol’s eager wish to follow it.

Delfarius

Delfarius

What does your friend have there?

Pistol looks up. Rocket grips a tiny brass key in its claws, its teeth shaped like a branching root. The squirrel chitters and tries to tuck it beneath one wing.

Pistol

Pistol

Oh! That? Rocket found it in the wall. It probably opens something important. Can we see where it goes?

Void Sight weighs the pair without touching them. Rocket is curious and easily directed; Pistol is bolder, loyal, and dangerously prone to uncovering sealed paths. She is not a threat yet, but her instincts will eventually cross Delfarius’s plans.

The assessment costs him a thin thread of attention. One dormant channel beneath the floor brightens and records his scrutiny, marking Pistol as an associated variable beside his name.

i look down and make the seam of light be absorbed by the Endless Archives in the Obsidian Tower without Pistol noticing. I sigh. "A hidden chamber below Oakhaven. Why are you still in Oakhaven?" A hidden chamber below Oakhaven. Why are you still in Oakhaven?

He sighs and turns away from the buried machine, walking toward the mirror-path with Repine padding beside him. Pistol follows, Rocket perched proudly on her shoulder.

Rocket likes the hidden paths, Stabby likes pretending he owns them, and I like knowing the city. It feels almost like ours, even when the walls whisper.

Rocket chitters toward the sealed chamber, but Pistol gently taps its brass head and keeps moving. Behind them, the dormant mechanism records their departure without reopening its routes.

We walk further away and I open a portal to an unwatched alleyway in Oakhaven. I stroke my chin hairs and look over to how easily Rocket is dissuades. I smirk. I just need to find one for Pistol and then. I think to my thoughts alone. To Pistol I say as I pet Repine. "Oakhaven is...well not the best place around. Delfarius

Delfarius

Delfarius pets Repine as the portal closes behind them. The alley remains unwatched, its damp stones carrying only distant market noise and the faint breath of hidden wards.

Pistol

Pistol

All of them? No way! Stabby says Oakhaven is like a goblin's pocket, except the pocket keeps changing and sometimes bites.

Pistol

He thinks there are secret doors under the old bathhouse, a bell tower that rings for people who are not there, and a locked garden beneath the mayor's house.

Pistol

✓ Quest Accepted

Reach the hidden district beyond Oakhaven

Am I entertaining the idea to make a new town away from my plans for Pistol and Stabby to be in?

YES, BUT (Likely, rolled 62)

Pistol's mention of changing pockets catches Delfarius's attention. Beneath the alley stones, a faint map of Oakhaven unfolds in shadow, marking an empty district beyond the eastern walls.

The map shows a broad square, dry wells, and foundations untouched by the city's shifting wards. It is suitable for a small town, deliberately separate from his established plans.

Pistol

Pistol

Oh! That place was never there before. Is it a secret town, or are we supposed to make it one?

The shadow-map sharpens around the district, accepting Delfarius's interest. A warning sigil burns beside it, demanding a portion of the Tower's stored ley-light to hold the location stable.

Pistol

Pistol

Stabby would love a town! He could call himself mayor, king, or extremely important pocket boss.

A thin red line climbs Delfarius's branded palm as the cost settles. Somewhere far above, one reserve of the Obsidian Tower's gathered light gutters, while the new district remains fixed.

Pistol

Pistol

Can we see it? I promise I will only open the doors that look friendly.

I switch out the parchment that Rocket has with the new map to the new town that is far far away from Oakhaven and the Orosia Kingdom. This new land is on the edge of the magic scorched lands I crossed over, and there the magic of mortals is even more unpredictable. Pistol looks it over and remarks on how cool must be there and how Stabby would find it. I just smirk.

Delfarius takes Rocket’s parchment and replaces it with the newly formed map. The shadow-marked town settles across the page, far beyond Oakhaven and the Orosia Kingdom.

Its roads run along the edge of the magic-scorched lands he crossed before, where mortal spells twist unpredictably and old stone foundations gleam beneath strange skies.

Pistol

Pistol

Whoa. That is really far away! It looks like the kind of place where everything is dangerous and amazing at the same time.

Pistol

Pistol

Stabby would love it there. He could find treasure, declare himself mayor, and probably start a war with a haunted fence.

Pistol studies the map with bright fascination while Rocket clings to her shoulder. The parchment accepts the distant town without resistance, its roads glowing faintly beneath her fingers.

Delfarius only smirks. The new town remains fixed on the map, remote from his established domains and waiting beneath the unpredictable magic of the scorched frontier.

I look down at the parchment the mechanical squirrel had as Pistol and Rocket are going to get Stabby. What does this other parchment say or have to do with?

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +1)

Pistol Interrupts the Delfariuses

Delfarius unfolds the other parchment beneath the alley’s muted light. Unlike the stable town map, its ink shifts in tiny branching lines, following the memory of Rocket’s brass key.

The parchment depicts Oakhaven from beneath: the hidden chamber, the old bathhouse, the bell tower, and a locked garden beneath the mayor’s house, all connected by rootlike passages.

At the center, a blank circle surrounds a sketch of the branching key. Around it, cramped symbols repeat one warning in several dead alphabets: THE FIRST DOOR OPENS TOWARD THE HOARD.

Delfarius

Delfarius

The parchment is a route-index, and the key belongs to the first door.

A final layer of ink appears beneath his touch. It marks the distant scorched frontier town with the same branching sigil, linking Rocket’s discovery to the settlement he has just fixed upon the world.

The parchment is not merely a map. It is an invitation from a buried network, identifying the new town as its destination and the hidden Oakhaven doors as the route toward it.

When Delfarius folds the sheet, the brass-key symbol remains visible through the outer layer, quietly pointing east while Oakhaven’s wards continue their patient silence.

Gather Pistol and Stabby for the journey

I fold the parchment that the squirrel had and make an amused noise to myself. Interesting things that these two seem to find I think to myself as I put that parchment away in my own personal belongings. I want Stabby and Pistol chasing adventures there, ones that have nothing to do with my Obsidian Tower, Endless Archives or any schemes of mine.

Delfarius

Interesting things those two keep finding.

His amused sound is quiet beneath the alley’s muted wards. Shadow gathers at his fingertips as he turns his attention east, toward Tremble’s newly fixed foundations.

The route between Oakhaven and Tremble folds inward without resistance. Rootlike passages withdraw from the hidden chamber, leaving no door, trail, or sympathetic current between the towns.

Even the Obsidian Tower and Endless Archives lose the route’s signature. Tremble remains beyond their indexing, independent of Delfarius’s schemes and guarded from accidental discovery.

As the final connection seals, the parchment in his keeping gains one harmless gift: a faint map of Tremble’s safe roads, wells, and open gathering places, meant for wandering adventurers.

The alley returns to ordinary quiet. Oakhaven keeps its mysteries, Tremble keeps its freedom, and Pistol and Stabby will find the new town waiting for adventures that belong entirely to them.
