The tome’s living ink dims as footsteps approach across the Archives. Marrec Voss stops at the reading table, carrying no dishes and wearing the Tower’s silence like a burden.

Marrec Voss
Chance has gone, and Auralis went with him. Future Delfarius is gone as well. I stayed because you told me to, but I no longer know whether staying is a choice here.
The Archives preserve the words without softening them. Far above, the Tower’s wards tighten around its halls, recognizing a challenge to the routines that have governed Marrec’s every hour.

Marrec Voss
You removed my title, my lands, my freedom to leave, and then called my obedience a household routine. I have obeyed. I have even wanted your affection. That does not make the cage disappear.
The black floor reflects Delfarius and Marrec together, but the reflection adds no collar, no command, and no verdict. For once, the Tower offers only an unaltered record.

Marrec Voss
If I remain, I need terms I can refuse. If I leave, I need to know you will not punish me for proving that I can. Can you give me either without making it another test?
The question hangs between the shelves, sharper than any blade. The Archives wait for Delfarius’s answer, while the Tower holds every door closed only until its master chooses what freedom will mean.
“I walk up to him and look him in the eyes. "Did you not say you were my pet under my command?" I watch him waiting for him to respond since he is choosing to freely talk to me even though I told him not to.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Intimidation, rolled -2)

Delfarius
Did you not say you were my pet under my command?
Delfarius closes the distance and holds Marrec’s eyes. Subjugator’s Presence bears down like sovereign command, while Dominator’s Will fixes the old hierarchy around the question, leaving no room for evasive wordplay.
Marrec does not kneel or retreat. The Archives preserve his silence, and the Tower’s waiting doors remain closed until his answer gives the confrontation its shape.

Marrec Voss
I did. I said I was your pet under your command, and I meant it then. I am still under your command now, if that is the truth you want stated plainly.

Marrec Voss
But I also said I need terms I can refuse. If being your pet means my obedience is expected while my refusal is punished, then it is ownership, not a choice.
The answer grants Delfarius the admission he demanded, but the victory costs him leverage: Marrec withdraws his unasked-for household service and will obey only commands he explicitly accepts.

Marrec Voss
So yes, I am your pet under your command. Now decide whether you want a pet who can refuse, or merely a prisoner trained to say yes.
