The Serdain Gate roars like a hungry throat. Below the high walls, the arena floor yawns open in dust and blood-colored light.
Delfarius steps into the shadow of the stands as hounds strain at their leashes, dragging a wounded knight toward the center.
The fugitive stumbles, one gauntleted hand clamped around a heavy iron key, old and blackened with age.

Sir Kaelor
You there... in the stands. If you came to watch me die, at least do not pretend you do not know what that key is.
A ripple of jeers crashes through the crowd. Somewhere above the sand, the arena master lifts a hand toward the beast pen.

The Arena Master
Final beast, to the floor. Let the Gate be fed.
The knight looks up at Delfarius again, pale with pain, and raises the key just enough for the light to catch its familiar shape.

Sir Kaelor
Help me, or let them witness you here. Either choice will be remembered.

Evaluate the disgraced knight's worthiness
“I laugh a low and amused brassy laugh that fills the arena floor. "Well entertain me first, knight. Then I will decide whether I am going to be shown to all of them or not."”
SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled -2)

Delfarius's laugh rolls out over the sand, low and brassy, and several heads in the stands turn with it. The knight blinks through the blood on his brow, then gives a thin, disbelieving huff.

Delfarius
Well. Entertain me first. Then I decide whether I am shown to all of them.

Sir Kaelor
A fair cruelty, then. I have earned worse.
The knight straightens on one knee, iron key clenched tight, and bares his teeth at the crowd instead of the arena master.

Sir Kaelor
They call me disgraced because I refused a lord's lie. I would rather kneel in blood than kneel in it.
Above them, the arena master pauses with one hand still raised. The hounds below him snarl harder, straining the leashes until the leather whips taut.

Sir Kaelor
If you want worth, mage, look at the truth. That key opens the beast pen, and the master means to empty it on us both.
The knight's grip slips for a heartbeat, and the blackened key flashes in the torchlight as the pen gate groans wider behind the master.
“I step out into the Arena for all to see. "A lord that lies, I thought those were only in fairy tales in old books." I smirk looking up at the lord. "He is more than welcomed to try and defeat me." My grin grows as the black energy crackles in my hands.”
SUCCESS (Good Intimidation, rolled +1)

Delfarius steps fully into the sand, dark power coiling between his hands like a living bruise. The arena hushes around that single, dangerous glow.

The Arena Master
Ah. So the mage finally chooses to be seen.

Sir Kaelor
He came.
The master’s raised arm falters a fraction, and the hounds’ snarling dips into uneasy whining as they feel the magic in the air.

The Arena Master
You mock lords, you flaunt power, and yet you still stand between spectacle and its ending. Why?

Sir Kaelor
Because he is no butcher’s toy. Because a lie was put on my name, and I will not die beneath it.
The knight keeps his iron key lifted, but his gaze flicks to Delfarius now, wary hope cutting through the blood and dust. The pen gate groans wider behind the master.

The Arena Master
Then speak quickly, mage. If you mean to judge him, judge him before I loose what waits in the dark.
“I snap back to the Arena master. "You are a fool to think I am only a mage." I summon Repine to my side. Repine lets out a menacing growl at the other normal hounds.”
SUCCESS (Good Intimidation, rolled -2)

Delfarius
You are a fool to think I am only a mage.
Delfarius’s voice cuts cleanly across the sand, and the dark glow around his hands thickens into a cold, watchful presence.
At his side, shadow gathers and peels upward, taking the shape of Repine in a single breath of ink and blue fire.

Repine
The hounds smell fear. Let them.
Repine lowers his head and gives a low, menacing growl. The leashed hounds recoil, claws scraping stone as their handlers tense.

The Arena Master
A shadow hound at your heel, and that stare of yours. Yes, I remember now, you are never only one thing.

Sir Kaelor
Then hear it, all of you. He sees what I have failed to prove. If this ends here, let it end with truth.
“"Yes. I will hear the truth of the lord's lie if We destroy your pathetic display of power here. Do we have an accord?"”
SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled -2)

Delfarius
Yes. I will hear the truth of the lord's lie if we destroy your pathetic display of power here. Do we have an accord?

The Arena Master
You ask plainly, so I answer plainly. Yes, Delfarius. The lie is the lord's, and this sand has fed it long enough.

Sir Kaelor
Then speak it now, before the gate takes the choice from my hands.
The Arena Master drags a breath through clenched teeth and cuts the mechanism's pull. The beast pen groans, then stills with its mouth only half-open.

The Arena Master
He named my house disloyal, promised pardon for my obedience, then used my arena to bury the proof. That is his lie.

Sir Kaelor
And mine is this, I carried the key because I was told to bring witness, not slaughter. I came to force his hidden bargain into the open.
The knight's knuckles whiten around the iron key, and a thin line of blood darkens his palm where the metal bites. The crowd stays silent, waiting on Delfarius's answer to the bargain now hanging in the dust.
“I look to the knight and notice he has no weapon. I throw him a blade made of void steel. "Well then, release the hounds, We will defeat them and then I will have long words with your lord."”
SUCCESS (Superb Combat Magic, rolled -1)

Delfarius turns his gaze to the knight, and void-dark metal answers his will. A blade forms in a silent spill of black sheen, then arcs through the air toward the sand at the knight's feet.
The Disgraced Knight snatches the weapon on instinct, fingers closing hard around the hilt as if it were the first solid thing in the arena.

Delfarius
Well then, release the hounds. We will defeat them, and then I will have long words with your lord.

The Arena Master
So be it. You have chosen the sand over the chain.
He hauls the lever again. Below the dais, the beast pen shudders awake, its half-open gate grinding wider with a hungry clang.

Sir Kaelor
Then witness me properly, if this is to be my last stand.
Repine lowers his shadowed head beside Delfarius, blue eyes fixed on the widening dark beyond the bars, while the first snarls rise from within.
“I stand back to back with the knight and smirk. Repine takes up the space to my right. "I hope you know how to fight." I say as the hounds get closer to us”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled -1)

Delfarius steps in beside the knight, back to back, and the sand shifts under both of them. Repine glides to his right, a dark flank filling the opening there as the hounds close in.

Delfarius
I hope you know how to fight.
The knight gives a breathless huff that might be a laugh, might be fear. He tightens his grip on the blade and sets his feet to match Delfarius's stance.

Sir Kaelor
I know enough to die poorly, or survive better than that.
From the pen comes the scrape of claws on stone, then the first beast's shape breaks the dark. Its breath rolls out hot and rank, and the crowd wakes with a thin, hungry murmur.

The Arena Master
Then earn your witness, if you can.
Repine bares his blue-lit teeth at the opening, and one of the oncoming hounds checks its stride. The knight flinches at the sound, and a line of blood slips from the new strain in his bandaged side.

Evaluate the disgraced knight's worthiness
“My grin widens as I cause claws of obsidian to form on my fingers and get down into a low crouch still back to back to the knight. I join Repine in his bestial growl to the normal hounds. I wait for them to join us in the arena.”
SUCCESS (Superb Combat Magic, rolled -3)

Obsidian blooms over Delfarius’s fingers, black points curling like fangs as he drops lower in the sand. Beside him, Repine’s growl deepens into a matched warning, and the nearest hounds hesitate at the sound.
The knight shifts with him, blade lifted, while the first hound edges out of the pen and sniffs the air. A second shape scrapes behind it, uneasy now, the pack uncertain of the dark they face.

The Arena Master
Kill them, then. Show me whether your shadow bites as hard as it boasts.
The crowd surges with a rough roar, but it breaks unevenly. Some cheer, some recoil, and the sound ripples across the stands like a blade dragged through cloth.
Delfarius’s growl meets Repine’s, and the front hound flattens its ears and checks its advance. In the same instant, the knight’s wounded side gives a wet slip of blood through the bandage.

Sir Kaelor
Hold them there, just a moment more... if you mean to do anything at all.
Above them, the open pen yawns wider still, and fresh claw-scrapes answer from the dark beyond. The beasts are not charging yet, but the arena has gone taut, waiting on Delfarius’s next move.
“I throw my head back laughing with pure blood lust then flash forward in a blinding flash of shadow and let my obsidian claws slice through the first hound.”
Critical hit for 3 damage — first hound struck back but missed

Delfarius lunges through the beast’s hesitation in a smear of shadow, obsidian claws flashing once, then twice. The hound’s shoulder opens, its charge collapsing into a stagger as it snaps back too late, jaws cutting only empty air where he was a heartbeat before.

A Hound
No, wait... I yield.
It skids in the sand, blood dark on its muzzle, ears pinned flat as it tries to drag itself away from the killing reach. The arena hush tightens, and from the dais above, the Arena Master’s grip white-knuckles the rail as the pack recoils from the sight of their wounded lead.
“Repine circles behind the other retreating hounds and gives them a growl letting them know he is now in charge.”
SUCCESS (Good Intimidation, rolled +2)

Repine circles wide through the drifting sand, slipping behind the retreating hounds with silent purpose. He plants himself between them and the beast pen, low and rigid, and his growl rolls out like a warning from the dark.
The hounds freeze. Ears flatten, tails tuck, and their glare breaks from the wounded lead to the shadow hound now claiming the line. None of them advance.

A Hound
Not that one. Not that one.
The pack yields by inches, scraping back from Repine's reach. The injured hound drags itself farther aside, no longer the center of the killing urge.

Sir Kaelor
It holds. By the gods, it holds.
Above them, the Arena Master stiffens on the dais, his hand lifting toward the mechanism in vain. The arena is his, but the beasts are not.

The Arena Master
Enough. Drive them on, or die where you stand.
The threat lands against a suddenly smaller circle of teeth and fear, and the knight remains on his feet, the only living witness still in the sand.
“I walk up to the lead hound and snap it's neck in a fury of blood that sprays against my evil grinning face.”
SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled +0)

Delfarius crosses the sand in a few calm strides, past the wheeling shadow of Repine and straight into the lead hound’s reach.
His hand clamps the beast’s throat, and with one hard twist the neck gives. Blood sprays across his smirk as the hound drops limp into the sand.
The pack shudders at the sudden break in the hunt. Repine holds the line, and the other hounds flinch farther back from the corpse.

Sir Kaelor
It is done... he ends it in one motion.

The Arena Master
No. That was not the order.
The dais rattles as the Arena Master jerks for the mechanism again, but the arena has already turned against his command. The knight is still standing, breathing hard, with the truth still in the open.

A Hound
Back... back from that one...

“Repine orders the rest of the hounds to stand behind me and the knight as I look up at the Arena Master. "I believe we won your little contest." I smirk wiping the blood from my face and giving it a taste as I do. I look to the knight and with a blood stained smirk I ask the Disgraced Knight his name.”
SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled +2)

Delfarius’s command lands like a chain thrown over the pack. The remaining hounds flatten, then creep behind him and the knight, ears low and eyes averted.
He lifts his chin toward the dais and wipes blood from his face with the back of his hand, the taste of iron sharp on his tongue.

Delfarius
I believe we win your little contest.
Repine settles at his side like a living shadow, while the Arena Master clutches the rail above, forced to stare down at a crowd gone still.

Delfarius
Your name.

Sir Kaelor
You may call me Sir Kaelor, if the title does not sour your mouth.

Sir Kaelor
I came here to carry witness, not glory. My lord sold that arena to hide his own oath-breaking, and I would not let the lie go buried.
Sir Kaelor’s grip tightens on the strange iron key, then loosens as if the weight of it has finally become bearable. Above them, the Arena Master says nothing, only watches.

“I rise from the ground and level my dagger towards the Arena master. "Tell your lord that the next blood I am coming for will not be a hound's. I detest liars, and oath breakers are the worst kind of liars."”
SUCCESS (Good Intimidation, rolled +0)

Delfarius rises from the sand and levels his dagger at the dais. The arena seems to hold its breath around the blade.

Delfarius
Tell your lord the next blood I come for is not a hound's. I detest liars, and oath breakers are the worst kind.

The Arena Master
His jaw tightens over the rail. Then you know enough to be dangerous, sorcerer.

Sir Kaelor
He is exactly that, and I would rather stand beside him than kneel beneath your lord's lie.
The Arena Master looks from Delfarius to Kaelor, anger giving way to calculation. He lifts one hand, and the iron gate grinds shut over the beast pen behind them.

The Arena Master
Take your witness, then. Leave this pit before I change my mind.
Sir Kaelor exhales once, slow and shaking, and lowers the dark blade a fraction. He does not move from Delfarius's side.
