Morning light spills across the Obsidian Tower’s breakfast chamber. Delfarius sits quietly with warm bread and fruit while the weakened foundation glow pulses beyond the observation balcony.

The balcony doors open sharply. Asterin enters carrying a dark sunstone, its surface showing distant roads, foundations, and countless hands reaching toward them.

Asterin

Asterin

Tell me what you have done to the foundation law.

She crosses the room with controlled anger, setting the sunstone beside Delfarius’s breakfast. Its dim radiance reveals paths that once welcomed petitioners but now resist their approach.

Asterin

Asterin

Do not call this protection a private kindness. I can see the roads narrowing, the foundations growing cautious, and the people below reaching for help they can no longer reach.

Asterin

Asterin

I am not asking to own the anchor, Delfarius. I am asking you to witness what your law has made harder, and to stop pretending that good intentions make the cost disappear.

Asterin folds her hands beside the sunstone and waits. The breakfast remains untouched between them, while the distant foundations flicker like guarded stars beneath its dark surface.

“I sigh slowly and just put some butter on my croissant and take a bite, letting Asterin get it all out of her system. I know she wants to yell at me some more. I look at her, my amusement growing more.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Delfarius sighs slowly, spreads butter across the croissant, and takes an unhurried bite. He lets Asterin’s anger fill the breakfast chamber without interrupting it.

Asterin

Asterin

You are eating while I explain how your law has narrowed access to a foundation meant to welcome the world.

Asterin gestures toward the dark sunstone. Within it, reaching hands withdraw from dimmed roads, while the foundation’s weakened glow pulses beneath the balcony.

Asterin

Asterin

Do not mistake my patience for surrender. You made yourself guardian, judge, and gate, then called the restriction protection.

Delfarius finishes the bite and looks at her, amusement growing across his face. He offers no defense, no apology, and no interruption.

Asterin

Asterin

There. That expression is exactly why I came. You are waiting for me to finish so you can decide whether my concern deserves to exist.

Asterin

Asterin

So finish your breakfast. Let me say everything. Then you will answer for the cost, not merely admire how neatly you contained it.

“I lean closer after finishing my pastry and smirk at her wider, an old malicious grin on my face. "Your right, perhaps instead I should try to own it and let no one else but myself have say over it's weave?" She looks at me being impossible and tells me exactly what she thinks of my words and my manner towards her.”

Delfarius finishes the pastry, leans across the table, and lets an old malicious grin widen beneath the dim pulse of the sunstone.

Delfarius

Delfarius

You are right. Perhaps I should own it instead, and let no one but myself have any say over its weave.

Asterin goes very still. The sunstone darkens between them, reflecting her restored radiance as her anger hardens into something colder than outrage.

Asterin

Asterin

There it is. The little tyrant beneath the weary mask, threatening to seize the very thing you claim to protect because you cannot bear a power that does not kneel to you.

Asterin

Asterin

Your manner is contemptuous, your joke is cruel, and your proposed ownership is not wit. It is the same old hunger dressed in cleaner words.

Asterin

Asterin

If you truly take the weave for yourself, I will oppose you. Not because I want the anchor, but because no guardian gets to call a cage protection and demand gratitude from those trapped inside it.

She does not retreat from the table or lower her gaze. The threat has achieved its purpose: Asterin’s restraint is gone, and every judgment she has withheld now stands plainly between them.

“I roll my eyes at her unbothered by her words or her power. "This is just not my week." I muse out loud as I take a sip of my coffee.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +2)

Delfarius rolls his eyes at Asterin’s accusation, entirely unbothered by her restored radiance or the cold force behind her threat. He lifts his coffee and takes a calm sip.

Delfarius

Delfarius

This is just not my week.

The coffee settles warmly on his tongue. The sunstone continues to dim between them, but Delfarius’s composure does not bend, and the breakfast chamber remains quiet around his dry resignation.

Asterin

Asterin

You say that as though the week is the problem, rather than the choices you keep making.

Asterin’s anger finds no purchase in him. Her fingers rest beside the sunstone, and its reflected radiance steadies as she studies his weary indifference instead of escalating.

Asterin

Asterin

Very well. Keep your power, if you insist. But look at the people who cannot reach what you have made difficult, and do not call their loss beneath your notice.

“I lean closer to the sunstone and tap it couple times, restoring the foundation glow to the way it was before my portal last night had disrupted it. "There. Happier, Sunbeam." I say with a wide grin at her old nickname that makes her angrier at me for saying it.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Ley-Line Manipulation, rolled +2)

The Cost of Protection

Asterin

Delfarius leans toward the dark sunstone and taps its surface twice. Ley-lines answer beneath his fingers, and the weakened foundation glow swells steadily back to its former brilliance.

The sunstone brightens until its roads shine clear again, showing distant hands reaching the foundation without resistance. Asterin watches the restoration in taut silence, her radiance reflected across the table.

Delfarius

Delfarius

There. Happier, Sunbeam.

Delfarius’s wide grin makes the old nickname land harder than the restored light. Asterin’s expression tightens, and the sunstone’s renewed brilliance throws golden fire across her face.

Asterin

Asterin

Do not call me that as though restoring what you damaged makes your mockery charming.

The foundation answers cleanly now, its welcoming roads fully open and its protective law steady rather than dim. The sunstone records no loss, only the quiet correction of Delfarius’s earlier disruption.

Asterin

Asterin

You have repaired the harm. That is not the same as earning forgiveness, and it is certainly not permission to turn my name into one of your old weapons.

“I sit calmly back down and fold my hands in front of me on the table regarding her with a small amusement, mischief in my eyes. 'She is amusing that she thinks she can tell me what I can or can not call her' I think to my thoughts alone. I just tilt my head to the side as I watch her get more upset at me looking at her. I reach forward and read her thoughts. Why is she really here? I wonder.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Investigation, rolled +0)

Asterin

Delfarius sits calmly back down and folds his hands on the table. A small amusement glints in his eyes as he regards Asterin, whose restored radiance tightens around her irritation.

Delfarius

Delfarius

She is amusing, thinking she can tell me what I can or cannot call her.

He tilts his head and watches her grow more upset beneath his attention. Then he reaches through the bright edge of her guarded thoughts, seeking the reason beneath her anger.

The investigation succeeds. Beneath Asterin’s outrage lies no wish to command the anchor, but fear that Delfarius’s restored authority will again turn protection into control.

He finds the deeper purpose clearly: Asterin came to witness whether he would preserve the foundation’s freedom when no force compelled him, and whether his correction would endure after her warning ended.

Her anger is genuine, but it conceals concern rather than a concealed scheme. She is here to judge his restraint, not to claim the foundation or challenge his strength.

“I just smirk at her after sitting a while in silence. Asterin tells me what I already know and I remark how I know which makes her more mad. That in turn makes me more amused and smug towards her.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Asterin

Silence settles across the breakfast chamber. Delfarius remains seated, then slowly smirks at Asterin, his folded hands and steady gaze making the quiet feel deliberate.

Asterin

Asterin

You know what I came to witness. I wanted to see whether your protection would remain freedom when no one stood here to challenge you.

Asterin

Asterin

I wanted to know whether the correction would endure after my warning ended, or whether you would quietly turn the foundation back into another possession.

Delfarius

Delfarius

I know. I knew that before you walked through the door.

Asterin’s restored radiance tightens around her shoulders. Her anger sharpens at the confirmation, not because he misunderstood her, but because he understood and chose to let her explain anyway.

Asterin

Asterin

Then your amusement is worse than ignorance. You watched me spend the words anyway, simply because you enjoyed making me prove what you had already decided.

Delfarius’s smirk deepens. The bright foundation continues welcoming every reaching hand below, while Asterin’s frustration gives him precisely the smug satisfaction he intended.

“I gesture towards her. "I was told once by someone it was right to let people speak what was on their mind so they could feel like they assisted on the matter. Not sure who told me that." I say with a grin tilting my head towards her. It was her that told me. I know it and she knows it.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Deception, rolled +0)

Delfarius

Delfarius

I was told once by someone it was right to let people speak what was on their mind, so they could feel they assisted. Not sure who told me that.

Delfarius gestures toward Asterin with a grin, tilting his head as though the memory has genuinely escaped him. The bright foundation continues welcoming every reaching hand below.

Asterin

Asterin

He remembers. He knows exactly who told him, and he is enjoying the insult more than the lesson.

Asterin

Asterin

How strange. I remember telling you that very thing, though apparently I failed to teach you that listening should survive the performance afterward.

Asterin’s radiance steadies around her, no longer flaring with anger. She recognizes the successful feint for what it is, and answers with the same dry precision rather than allowing him the satisfaction of denial.

Asterin

Asterin

You may keep pretending not to remember, Delfarius. I will count your performance as proof that you heard me, even if your manners remain incurable.

The sunstone’s restored roads shine between them. Asterin remains at the table, her challenge intact but softened by the acknowledgment hidden inside his teasing.

“I gesture towards the Sunstone then put it safely out of the reach of either of us in my Endless Archives to be accessed when I might need to access it. "Funny how you are concerned about this when until last night no one, not even myself was knowing of it. We only noticed it in the observatory." I say without thinking about the we in that statement. Asterin catches and asks who else knows of it. I look at her smugly and smirk.”

Delfarius

Delfarius

Funny how you are concerned about this when until last night no one, not even myself, knew of it. We only noticed it in the observatory.

The Archives close around the Sunstone and record its location for Delfarius alone to retrieve when needed. The breakfast chamber is left with only the bright foundation roads shimmering beyond the balcony.

Asterin

Asterin

Who else knows of it? You said we noticed it. Who was with you in the observatory?

Asterin leans forward, her restored radiance sharpening around her shoulders. The question is direct now, stripped of its earlier argument about the foundation.

Delfarius looks at her with a smug, knowing smirk. He offers no name, explanation, or correction, leaving the unanswered word hanging between them beneath the golden morning light.

“My grin grows a bit more mischievous and I have an old twinkle in my eyes. "Why are you jealous I was with someone else, Sunbeam?"”

Delfarius’s grin grows more mischievous, an old twinkle returning to his eyes. The Sunstone is already sealed in the Endless Archives, safely beyond Asterin’s reach, leaving only his teasing between them.

Asterin

Asterin

Jealous? Perhaps. You have always been irritatingly difficult to ignore, and now you add a secret companion to the list.

Asterin’s radiance flickers across the breakfast chamber, warm gold betraying the question’s success before her expression hardens again. She cannot inspect the Sunstone or verify his companion, and the uncertainty unsettles her.

Asterin

Asterin

Enjoy that victory if you must. I will not demand the name, but I will remember that you turned my concern into flirtation instead of answering it.

She folds her hands beside the empty place where the Sunstone rested. The tease has drawn an admission and preserved his secret, but Asterin’s trust now carries a fresh, plainly stated reservation.

“I lean closer to her smugly. "Oh if you just wanted some sex, you could have just asked me, no need to be jealous. I know I am a great lover." Asterin gets more upset at my crass words towards her and I laugh at her discomfort.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Deception, rolled -1)

Delfarius

Delfarius

Oh, if you just wanted some sex, you could have asked. No need to be jealous. I know I am a great lover.

Delfarius leans closer with a smug tilt to his mouth, delivering the insinuation exactly as intended. Asterin’s restored radiance flares gold across the breakfast chamber, and her composure fractures into furious discomfort.

Delfarius

Delfarius

You should see your face.

Delfarius laughs openly at her reaction, pleased by the successful deception and the sharp embarrassment his words have provoked. The bright foundation roads continue shining beyond the balcony, entirely indifferent to their quarrel.

Asterin

Asterin

You are vile. I came to discuss the world’s foundations, and you answer with vanity and a proposition I never made.

Asterin

Asterin

Do not mistake my discomfort for jealousy, Delfarius. I am angry because you keep turning every serious exchange into an invitation to admire yourself.

Her radiance settles into a hard golden glare while Delfarius’s laughter continues beneath it. The accusation lands, but his provocation has accomplished its purpose: Asterin is flustered, angry, and no longer pretending detachment.

“"So you really came here because you suspected you were not the only one I had eyes for any longer. So terribly un-understanding of you, Asterin. It is ok. I know I am hard to forget once you have been in the bed with me." I say rising laughing.”

Delfarius rises laughing, leaving the breakfast table behind. His taunt lands with effortless confidence, and Asterin’s restored radiance flashes across the chamber like sudden sunrise.

Asterin

Asterin

You are unbearable. I came because I sensed another presence beside you, and you answer by boasting about our bed as though that proves anything.

Asterin’s golden composure fractures into furious embarrassment. The sunstone’s restored roads gleam beyond them, while her attention remains fixed on Delfarius and the implication he has made.

Asterin

Asterin

Do not look so pleased with yourself. I remember that bed, Delfarius, but memory is not permission for you to turn me into the punchline of your jealousy.

She faces him fully, radiance hardening around her shoulders. Yet the accusation has succeeded: beneath her outrage, uncertainty about his companion now burns plainly enough to betray her.

“"My jealousy? I was not the one who interrupted your quiet breakfast with unfounded accusations." I lean in closer to her and smile smugly and widely at her. "Sunbeam."”

Delfarius leans closer, smiling smugly and widely as he delivers the old name. The taunt lands cleanly, turning her accusation back upon her with effortless confidence.

Asterin

Asterin

You are dismissing the accusation, not disproving it. And you know exactly why that name still reaches me.

Asterin’s radiance flares gold, but she does not retreat. The victory costs Delfarius a measure of her trust: she now suspects his secrecy is deliberate emotional manipulation, not mere exhaustion.

Asterin

Asterin

Keep your companion secret if you insist. But do not expect me to mistake your smile for honesty, or your old pet name for tenderness.

The bright roads beyond the balcony remain open and steady. Asterin holds his gaze beneath the restored foundation light, wounded pride contained beneath a sharper, newly guarded resolve.

“"My smile is like a perfume on a blade and my old name for you is not for tenderness. But my amusement at making you look more adorable as you get angrier at me. That is unmistakably true." I say laugh darkly at her.”

Delfarius laughs darkly, the sound low and deliberate beneath the golden foundation light. His smile sharpens as he watches Asterin’s anger become more vivid rather than less controlled.

Asterin

Asterin

You admit the cruelty so proudly that I almost respect the honesty. Almost. Do not mistake my anger for adorableness merely because you enjoy provoking it.

Asterin’s radiance flares around her shoulders, bright enough to gild the table and the open balcony. Yet her outrage no longer hides uncertainty; she understands exactly what he is doing and refuses to retreat.

Asterin

Asterin

Keep your blade-smile, then. Keep your secrets and your amusement. But if you want me to remain in this room, stop pretending that mockery is the same thing as closeness.

The foundation roads continue shining beyond the balcony, open to every reaching hand. Between Delfarius and Asterin, the restored light exposes no reconciliation, only a sharper boundary she has chosen to state aloud.

Delfarius

The morning is finally quiet.

Delfarius laughs at the emptied chamber, the sound carrying beneath the fading warmth Asterin left behind. The golden foundation roads remain open beyond the balcony, steady and unobstructed.

With a casual flick of magic, Delfarius clears the breakfast area. Plates, crumbs, cups, and the dark sunstone’s former place lift together and vanish into their proper stores.

The table wipes itself clean, its polished surface reflecting only pale morning light. The chairs settle into order, and the chamber loses every trace of the argument except its echo.

Beyond the balcony, the foundation continues welcoming distant hands without resistance. Its restored current answers no master’s summons and accepts no hidden restriction.

A quiet chime sounds from the Endless Archives, reporting that the sealed sunstone remains secure and the foundation’s corrected law has held through the morning.

“I walk out onto my balcony just enjoying the silence of creation passing below me. I had forgotten how peaceful it was since Nadron and Faelwen had became more like companions more than just my kept pets. I let the wind sweep my hair back as I take in a deep breath.”

The Cost of Protection

Delfarius steps onto the balcony as the last breakfast chime fades behind him. The open air receives him without demand, carrying the vast world below through slow rivers of cloud and distant mountain light.

The wind sweeps his dark red hair back from his face. Far beneath the Tower, forests, cities, and shining roads pass through the morning in quiet motion, each continuing without asking for his hand.

Delfarius

Delfarius

The air is clean, and nothing is breaking.

He draws a deep breath and lets it fill him, tasting cold heights, sun-warmed stone, and the faint green scent of living lands below. No summons follows. No ward trembles. Silence remains silence.

Beyond the railing, creation unfolds without spectacle. Rivers catch the light like silver threads, clouds pour over the horizon, and the distant foundation roads continue welcoming every reaching hand.

Delfarius rests both hands against the balcony stone and watches the world pass beneath him. For this brief span, exhaustion has no command to obey and solitude asks nothing except that he remain present.

“I sit up on the edge and let my feet dangle over the edge. Past Delfarius arrives from a portal from his time and jokes about me not jumping I have so much to live for. I laugh at him.”

Delfarius sits on the balcony’s edge and lets his feet dangle above the endless cloud-sea. The clean air moves through his dark red hair while the world remains peacefully intact.

A violet portal opens behind him without warning. Past Delfarius steps through from his own time, glances at the dangling feet, and folds his arms with theatrical concern.

Past Delfarius

Past Delfarius

Careful. Do not jump. You have so much to live for, and I would hate to inherit all your unfinished problems.

The joke hangs in the open air for half a breath. Then Delfarius laughs, the sound carrying over the balcony and into the quiet halls of the Obsidian Tower.

Past Delfarius

Past Delfarius

There. That is better. I arrive from another time, and apparently my first service is preventing you from becoming unbearably dramatic in silence.

Past Delfarius settles beside him, leaving the same broad stretch of stone between them. Below, rivers flash silver through the clouds, and neither version of Delfarius rushes to disturb the calm.

“"Hmm did you come to just to ensure you would not have more of a headache or did you sense that Nadron and Faelwen have left?" He answers.”

Past Delfarius studies him across the balcony, theatrical concern giving way to a more attentive stillness. The cloud-sea rolls beneath them, and the Tower remains quiet behind their backs.

Past Delfarius

Past Delfarius

Both, unfortunately. I felt the headache before I arrived, but I sensed the absence afterward. Nadron and Faelwen are gone, and you are pretending that does not matter.

He shifts beside Delfarius without crowding him, leaving the same deliberate distance between their shoulders. His gaze stays on the horizon, though his attention remains fixed on the silence inside the Tower.

Past Delfarius

Past Delfarius

I did not come to drag you into another crisis. I came to see whether you were alone because you wanted solitude, or because the people who shared your bed finally chose a life beyond it.

Past Delfarius turns at last, his expression losing its exaggerated concern. He offers no accusation, only the plain answer to the question: he sensed the departure, and the headache was secondary.

“I sigh deeply. "It has been a week or so of more departures than arrivals." I say looking down at the small town glittering below us. "I am , well as fine as I can be with it. It was bound to happen once we let them think they had some control of the whole affair. They do not remember anything."”

Past Delfarius listens without interrupting. Below, the small town glitters beneath the cloud-sea, its lanterns steady while the Tower’s balcony holds the weight of the confession.

Past Delfarius

Past Delfarius

You are calling it fine because you can survive it. That is not the same as saying their departure left no mark.

He keeps his gaze on the town rather than forcing Delfarius to meet it. The answer is gentle, but it refuses to let control disguise absence.

That does not make you abandoned. It means the aftermath belongs to you now, without their knowledge of what they shared with you to soften it.

Past Delfarius finally turns toward him, offering neither comfort nor correction. He simply remains beside him above the glittering town, present for the truth Delfarius has chosen to speak.

“I turn to him with a raised eyebrow. "Or the complications of remembering the secrets we keep in the tower or archives. Or the complications of remembering the secrets we keep in the Tower or Archives. I would rather keep our secrets where they are and feel a little heartache than invite visitors demanding I resurrect some dead grandmother or anything like that.

Past Delfarius

Past Delfarius

That is sensible. I know every secret you know, and you know every secret I carry. I would rather share the heartache with you than open those doors to strangers who would turn grief into a list of demands.

Past Delfarius’s agreement comes without suspicion or a new boundary between them. Instead, his expression settles into sober recognition of the cost they have chosen together.

Past Delfarius

Past Delfarius

But do not carry that heartache alone and call it the price of being the one who acts. If the secrets weigh on you, they weigh on me too. That is the cost of our understanding.

His words leave the decision intact: the Tower and Archives remain closed to unwanted visitors, while the burden of what they contain becomes shared rather than hidden between them.

Past Delfarius

Past Delfarius

Keep the doors shut. Let the dead remain records, not obligations. If someone comes asking for miracles, they can find us standing together when we refuse.

Delfarius

The declaration rings across the open sky. Far below, the reaching roads continue their work, but the spectacle makes the Tower’s balcony an unmistakable proclamation of refusal.

The two Delfarii laugh together above the cloud-sea, mooning the creation beneath them while the Obsidian Tower’s wards preserve the outrageous declaration as an official historical record.

“I point down to a faint glimmer from a telescope that was aimed up at the tower and at the one mortal that saw us do that and say in a narrator type voice to Past Delfarius.
