The Barista

Chance holds the crooked cafe door open and gestures toward a shadowed table beyond the other patrons. His copper-red hair catches the lamplight as he studies Delfarius’s lowered hood.

Chance

Chance

This way. The table is private enough for secrets, but not so private that I start imagining you brought me a curse.

The barista sets down two steaming cups and retreats without comment. Around them, four cafe patrons continue their quiet conversations, though one glance lingers on the hood before turning away.

Chance

Chance

Coffee first, explanations afterward. Or no explanations, if that is what you prefer. I am remarkably generous when properly caffeinated.

Chance sits opposite Delfarius, listening as the layered resonance still threaded through his voice echoes faintly between the cups. His smile remains easy, but his attention makes concealment difficult.

Chance

Chance

You sound like several bad decisions trying to speak at once. I will not demand an explanation, Delfarius, but I am curious whether the hood is for my benefit or yours.

Keep Chance from recognizing the damage to Delfarius’s eyes and voice

“I shake my head with my hood still on and smirk a bit and take out the coin he gave me. I flip it from the favorable side then turn it to the unfavorable side and tap it without saying a word. I take a sip of my coffee and wait for his response to what I said without words. I had a string of bad luck.”

Delfarius shakes his head beneath the lowered hood, hiding his blackened eyes, and lets a faint smirk touch his mouth. He draws out Chance’s copper coin.

He flips the coin from its favorable face, turns it deliberately to the unfavorable side, and taps that face against the table. The silent message lands cleanly.

Delfarius takes a measured sip of coffee and waits without speaking. The layered resonance in his voice remains quiet, leaving the coin to explain the string of bad luck.

Chance

Chance

Ah. That side has been winning for you lately. You have had a run of bad luck, and you wanted me to notice without making you explain it.

Chance studies the unfavorable face, then looks back toward the shadowed hood. His smile turns sympathetic without becoming pitying, and he leaves the coin untouched.

Chance

Chance

I noticed. You do not have to recount every misfortune. Tell me only whether you want company while luck finishes misbehaving.

“I shrug and gesture towards all the mortals drinking and eating around us without saying a word. My grin does grow under the hood that is hiding my black eyes.”

Chance

Delfarius shrugs beneath the hood and gestures broadly toward the four cafe patrons eating and drinking around them. His grin grows in the shadow hiding his black eyes.

Chance

Chance

Ah. You are saying the audience is everywhere, and therefore nowhere worth worrying about. A wonderfully evasive answer.

Chance glances across the cafe, then returns his attention to Delfarius. The nearby conversations continue undisturbed, giving the gesture exactly the harmless meaning he intended.

Chance

Chance

Fine. You do not have to explain the hood, the voice, or the recent misfortune. You can simply drink coffee with me.

Chance lifts his cup in a small salute and leaves Delfarius’s coin untouched between them. His smile turns brighter, accepting the silence as company rather than resistance.

Chance

Chance

Though I reserve the right to become curious again after the second cup. Curiosity is one of my more survivable habits.

“I shake my head then rub my temples under the hood still hiding my eyes. I bring out a parchment and write on it. "I could speak and show my eyes, but I am afraid the mortals here would run and scream. I don't care if they do, it might be entertaining, but I thought you might just like to have coffee." I pass the parchment over to him to read taking a sip of my coffee as he does. My hood is still down over my black eyes.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Delfarius shakes his head and rubs his temples beneath the hood, keeping his blackened eyes hidden. Around them, the four cafe patrons continue their quiet conversations.

He draws out parchment and writes that he could speak and reveal his eyes, but the mortals might run and scream. He admits that might entertain him, yet he thought Chance would simply prefer coffee.

Delfarius passes the parchment across the table, then lifts his cup and drinks while Chance reads. The layered resonance remains contained behind the hood.

Chance

Chance

You hid a terrifying revelation inside an invitation to share coffee. I appreciate the priorities, though I admit I am curious about the eyes.

Chance folds the parchment once and sets it beside the copper coin rather than passing it to anyone else. His amusement stays warm, untouched by fear or theatrical alarm.

Chance

Chance

Keep the hood if you want. I came for coffee and your company, not a performance for strangers. If the eyes become relevant, you can show me when you choose.

He raises his cup toward Delfarius in another quiet salute. The cafe remains ordinary around them, while the note rests safely between their coffee and the coin.

“I chuckle softly enough that it might just be mistaken for two or five people chuckling at once instead of all of my live times, then sigh. I grab the parchment. "I could explain with words, but again. The mortals would freak the fuck out. Suffice to say, I had a night with the dark and the dark won. It has happened before in the past. It just has been a long while since this has happened." I pause and start to hand the parchment over to him then make a amendment to it. "The voices are new. But the eyes have happened before." I let him read the parchment as I drink my coffee in silence.”

I could explain with words, but again. The mortals would freak the fuck out. Suffice to say, I had a night with the dark, and the dark won. It has happened before, in the past. It has just been a long while since this happened.

Delfarius chuckles softly, the sound briefly resembling two or five voices at once, then sighs. He writes the explanation onto the parchment, pauses, adds a final amendment, and passes it across the table while drinking his coffee.

Delfarius

Delfarius

The voices are new. But the eyes have happened before.

Chance reads the amended parchment in silence. The four cafe patrons continue murmuring around them, unaware that the hood conceals a wound in Delfarius’s sight and a chorus that should not be there.

Chance

Chance

So the dark won this round, but not the war. And the voices are an alteration, while the eyes are an old consequence. I believe you, Delfarius.

Chance

Chance

You gave me enough truth to understand without turning the cafe into a panic. Keep the hood if you need it. I am still here, and I am still drinking coffee with you.

“I smirk under my hood with my black eyes concealed under it's fold and write down on the parchment as I finish my coffee. "We could let them see and hear me. Delfarius finishes his coffee beneath the hood, then writes the suggestion on the parchment. He underlines and circles “could” before sliding the note toward Chance with a small shrug.

Chance

Chance

That word is doing heroic work. You are proposing chaos, not requesting permission to unleash it.

Chance reads the circled word again, then glances toward the four nearby patrons. Their cups and murmured conversations remain undisturbed, unaware of the invitation to misfortune.

Chance

Chance

I admit the thought has charm. But if we show them, I want it to be because you choose the spectacle, not because the dark chose it for you.

He taps the parchment beside the copper coin, leaving the decision visible between them. His smile turns conspiratorial, but he makes no sign toward the patrons and reveals nothing.

Chance

Chance

So, could we? Yes. Will we? That remains your delightfully dangerous choice, Delfarius.

Oh, I would absolutely enjoy causing mischief with you. The circled word tells me you are inviting me to choose the flavor, not ordering me to serve it.

Chance leans over the parchment, his grin sharpening as he considers the four cafe patrons. He still does not gesture toward them, keeping the proposal safely hypothetical.

Chance

Chance

I vote for a little omen rather than a catastrophe. Let them hear one impossible sentence, see one impossible glimpse, and spend the evening arguing over which sense betrayed them.

The cafe patrons continue drinking and murmuring, unaware that Chance has accepted the invitation to mischief while carefully leaving its execution in Delfarius’s hands.

Chance

Chance

But not yet. I want to know whether you are proposing a joke, a warning, or an audience. Those are three very different kinds of unlucky day.

Chance

Chance

He came to me instead of unleashing the strange voices alone. That is either restraint or an unusually elaborate invitation.

Chance taps the unfavorable face of the copper coin, then turns it once beneath his fingertip. The coin stops balanced on its edge between their cups.

“I tilt my face and hood to my empty coffee cup. My grin grows as I slowly look towards the counter where I would go to get a top off on my cup. I look back at Chance and sees if he wants to see what will happen when I go up and get some more coffee or if I should just stay the hidden mute patron of the crooked cafe.”

Delfarius tilts his hood toward the empty cup, then slowly angles his grin toward the counter. He looks back to Chance, holding the question in the gesture: refill and mischief, or silence and coffee.

His perception catches every likely reaction before it happens: the barista would refill the cup without demanding words, while the four patrons would notice the hooded stranger crossing the room and then return to their conversations.

Chance

Chance

You are waiting for my vote before you make coffee into an omen. I admire the restraint, though I confess the counter has suddenly become fascinating.

Chance taps the balanced coin between them, his grin sharpening as it remains upright. He gestures toward the counter, then settles back, clearly granting Delfarius the choice to begin the mischief.

Chance

Chance

Go when you want. I will watch the room, the barista, and the luck around your cup. If something amusing happens, I promise not to pretend it was accidental.

The empty cup remains beneath Delfarius’s hand, and the counter waits across the crooked cafe. Chance keeps his attention on him, ready to see what a simple refill becomes.

“I laugh lowly as the chorus of all of my lifetimes and take the empty cup up to the counter. I look the barista in the eyes, letting her see my black eyes and letting it look like the hood just slipped down so the other mortals in the cafe can see my black eyes. I say to her with no malice in my voice, but who knows what one of the chorus in my voice says it. "Can I get some more coffee, please?" I watch as this mortal barista sees this blackened inky eyed monster with many voices coming out of one mouth ask for coffee react.”

Delfarius laughs lowly, the chorus of his lifetimes overlapping in one dark cadence. He carries the empty cup to the counter as his hood slips back, exposing his inky eyes.

The barista, a young adult woman with a sturdy build, tawny skin, dark braided hair, and a green apron over a cream blouse, looks directly into the impossible blackness.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Can I get some more coffee, please?

The chorus makes the polite request sound like several voices sharing one mouth. The barista freezes for a breath, then deliberately sets a fresh cup beneath the waiting pot.

The Barista

The Barista

Of course. Black coffee, I assume?

She pours without screaming, though her knuckles whiten around the pot. Two cafe patrons glance over, then abruptly become fascinated by their cups as the barista slides the coffee across.

“I lean closer to her smiling widely. 'Professional this one.' I think to my thoughts alone. "Yes please. Black no cream or sugar." I say as the chorus of all my lifetimes as I watch her finish pour my new cup then laugh delighted at her strength of serving her customers first, being unnerved later. "Thank you." I say with a grin and walk back laughing at the other patrons trying so very hard to not look or scream or shit themselves.”

Delfarius

Delfarius

Thank you.

Delfarius lifts the fresh cup and laughs, delighted by the barista’s decision to serve her customer first and deal with being unnerved afterward. He turns back toward Chance beneath his slipping hood.

The four cafe patrons stare determinedly into their drinks as Delfarius returns, their strained stillness nearly comic. Chance watches him approach with a widening grin and leaves the balanced coin untouched.

Chance

Chance

You got your coffee, thanked the woman, and terrified the room without making anyone run. I am beginning to suspect your idea of restraint is contagious.

“I sit down with my hood still over my head but my eyes showing to Chance. I smirk. "Well I guess it is not going to make everyone run if I talk after all." I say as the chorus of all my live times amused before taking another sip of my new cup of coffee. "I am ever surprised."”

Delfarius

Well, I guess it is not going to make everyone run if I talk after all.

He smirks and takes another sip from the fresh black coffee. The four cafe patrons keep their seats, their alarm easing now that the impossible voice has asked for nothing but a drink.

Delfarius

Delfarius

I am ever surprised.

Chance

Chance

You made a polite request, thanked the barista, and then sat down like nothing happened. That is either restraint or the most charming threat I have seen all week.

Chance’s grin turns conspiratorial as the balanced coin finally tips into his palm. He catches it without looking and lowers his voice, offering Delfarius the cafe’s back room whenever the chorus becomes too conspicuous.

Chance

Chance

And for what it is worth, the room is listening less now. You have earned yourself coffee, privacy, and a witness who is not frightened away.

“"I guess I should not be surprised that it is like this here. Secrets are more important than making a name for yourself or a scene." The chorus of all my lifetimes is still in my words as I speak. I grin wider looking at Chance with my black eyes. The chorus of Delfarius’s lifetimes gives the words layered weight as he grins at Chance with black eyes. Around them, the cafe patrons carefully keep their secrets and their seats.

A tired young adult man enters carrying a worn music case, his narrow shoulders bent beneath a weathered brown coat. Gray threads his dark hair, and ink stains mark his fingers.

The tired pianist pauses at the sight and sound of Delfarius, studying the black eyes, the shared voice, and the untouched possibility of a scene. He looks toward the empty piano.

The Tired Pianist

The Tired Pianist

Secrets pay poorly, but music sometimes pays in better secrets. I will play, if you will let the room remain itself.

He sets his case beside the piano, accepts no challenge from the room, and begins a quiet, uncertain melody. The cafe listens without fleeing, while Chance’s grin turns approving.

Chance

Chance

There. A private performance, a public oddity, and nobody forced to pretend they saw nothing. That sounds like your kind of compromise.

“I throw my head back and laugh it sounding much more menacing with the chorus of all of my lifetimes coming from my one mouth. I lean closer to Chance. "So now that some of what my night entailed is brought to the light so to speak, how have you been?" I say with a smirk as the chorus of all my lifetimes cadence is still in my speaking voice as my black eyes glitter with amusement.”

Delfarius throws his head back and laughs, the chorus of his lifetimes making the sound far more menacing than the cafe requires. He leans closer to Chance, black eyes glittering beneath the lamplight.

Chance

Chance

I have been charming, unlucky, and technically innocent of several incidents I absolutely caused. So, in other words, better than usual.

The tired pianist lets the melody continue beneath their conversation, glancing over once as the layered laughter fades into the cafe’s ordinary murmur. Chance keeps his attention on Delfarius.

Chance

Chance

I have been watching the fortune-current and avoiding my sister’s attempts to make every blessing into a social obligation. I missed you, though. That part is less amusing.

Chance

Chance

Now tell me whether your night ended with coffee, catastrophe, or some delightful combination you are about to pretend was neither.

Chance nudges the balanced coin toward Delfarius but does not touch him, his grin inviting an answer rather than demanding one. The pianist’s uncertain tune curls through the room like a private wager.

“I lean closer and look him in the eyes with my black inky eyes smirking. "Well my day so far has started with coffee and delightful company." I say with the chorus still with my voice of every lifetime I have lived. "And do not dare think I do not notice you trying to turn this into a wager. You would need to wake up earlier than that to fool me." Chance

Chance

I would never mistake that for a wager. A challenge, perhaps, but one delivered with such delightful company that I would be foolish to pretend I had not been warned.

Chance leaves the coin between them without flipping it. His grin widens, but he draws his hand back from the table, accepting the boundary instead of trying to turn the moment into a game.

Chance

Chance

No wager. I will simply enjoy my coffee, your company, and the rare privilege of being corrected before luck gets involved. Though I reserve the right to be charming about it.

The tired pianist lets the melody curl around their table. Chance lifts his cup in surrender, eyes bright with mischief but free of any concealed stake, and the coin remains untouched between them.

“I take my coin back from this trickster godling and smirk. "Morghain wants to meet you." I say with a smirk knowing that it might catch even him off guard. I am sure he would not expect me to tell him or to have taken his advice. My voice is still carrying the chorus of all the lifetimes I have lived.”

Delfarius reaches across the table and takes the copper coin back from Chance, turning it once across his knuckles. His smirk sharpens beneath the chorus in his voice.

Delfarius

Chance’s grin disappears for one startled breath. He remembers advising Delfarius to speak with Morghain, and the surprise of being told he succeeded lands more heavily than the announcement itself.

Chance

Chance

You actually took my advice. I expected you to interrogate the problem until it surrendered, not return with an invitation for me.

The pianist’s melody continues softly behind them. Chance studies the reclaimed coin, then Delfarius’s dark eyes, realizing this meeting will place him inside a relationship he once only observed from outside.

Delfarius

Delfarius

I am explaining it as plainly as I can, despite her fondness for making simple invitations sound like prophecies.

Delfarius rolls his eyes and sighs, the gesture carrying more amusement than irritation. The copper coin rests between them, untouched, while Chance studies the invitation’s shape rather than searching for a hidden wager.

Chance

Chance

That sounds like Morghain. She offers a choice, then wraps it in enough mystery to make refusal feel like an unfinished riddle.

Chance

Chance

I accept, Delfarius. I will meet her as myself, and I will meet the three-way question without pretending I already know what the answer should be. That sounds much more interesting.

Chance lifts his cup in agreement, his grin returning without turning the moment into a wager. Around them, the crooked cafe keeps its quiet rhythm as the pianist’s melody steadies again.

“I lean in close looking at his lips for a moment before wetting mine which with my black inky eyes should be a terrifying sight, but Chance knows I hope that I am just flirting. I grin wider and say quietly to him. "Do you think the piano player is going to be unnerved by my next spoken words that are out loud?" The chorus of all my lifetimes are in my cadence.”

Do you think the pianist will be unnerved by my next spoken words out loud?

Delfarius leans close, his black inky eyes fixed on Chance’s lips before he wets his own and grins wider. The layered chorus makes the flirtation beautifully unsettling.

Chance

Chance

The pianist is already unnerved. He is simply too polite to stop playing, and now he is wondering whether your next sentence will have one voice or an entire haunting.

The pianist’s fingers falter over the keys, producing one crooked note before recovering. He keeps his gaze on the instrument, though his ears angle unmistakably toward their table.

Chance

Chance

But if you are asking whether he will flee, no. Curiosity has him trapped more securely than fear. Go on, Delfarius. Give him the sentence you came to say.

Chance leans nearer, eyes bright with amusement, and lowers his voice to match the intimacy. Across the cafe, the pianist swallows, adjusts his hands, and waits for the chorus.
