Kazid

Blood and spilled wine slick the garden stones. Kazid backs into the hedge, pale with panic, while Lyss stands beside him with the Void collar at her throat, calm and dangerous.

Kazid

Kazid

You do not understand. The palace invitation was never for me. It is a lure for something older, something masked.

Lyss

Lyss

He is watching the shadows, not Delfarius. He expects someone else to answer.

Kazid fumbles a blood-wet ribbon from his sleeve. A crest is stamped into the wax, then split by a thin black sigil of sacrifice.

Kazid

Kazid

They call it a petition, but it is a naming rite. The palace takes a life, a face, a witness. Then it opens.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Then you are leading me to the throat of it.

Kazid swallows hard and points toward the dark window. Beyond the glass, the city glows toward the palace, and the trap’s shape finally becomes clear, a conspiracy of masks, names, and sacrifice drawing Delfarius straight into the heart of it.

Bring Kazid to the name behind the trap

"Oh Kazid, where is the bravado you had earlier and the callous remarks towards me? Is it because you saw how easily I can dismantle anything with my whims?" I look down at his coat speckled with blood and flesh and smirk a malicious toothy grin.

SUCCESS (Legendary Intimidation, rolled +1)

Delfarius lets the silence stretch, then gives Kazid a slow, venomous smile. Blood and torn flesh speckle the man’s coat, and the sight of it makes the hedge-side corner look smaller.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Oh, Kazid, where did that bravado go? Where did those callous little remarks go, now that you have seen how easily I break things with a whim?

Kazid flinches hard, his hand tightening around the blood-wet ribbon until the wax crest creaks. Lyss stays still beside him, collar dark at her throat, her eyes fixed on the way Kazid’s confidence has already begun to bleed out.

Kazid

Kazid

He can smell fear. If I speak the wrong name, I die in this garden.

Delfarius’s smirk widens, all teeth and patience. The palace windows glow beyond the garden, but the man in the hedge seems to understand that the brighter danger is standing in front of him.

Kazid

Kazid

You want the hand behind it. Fine. I answer to a steward called Maelor, but he is not the one wearing the mask.

The name lands in the wet air like a dropped blade. Kazid’s voice breaks on the last word, and even Lyss turns her head a fraction, as if the shape of the truth is finally visible.

Bring Kazid to the name behind the trap

I walk calmly over to Kazid and laugh like a roll of thunder. I look at this little godling and smirk with a more regal statue than any mortal king could possess. "Ambition that follows another's hand, you wish to take the power of the one who tries to trap me. As if he could." I shake my head like a disappointed father. "So fucking predictable. Is Maelor the one who is the puppet master, or the one who is controlled by a larger hand?"

Kazid

Delfarius crosses the blood-slick stones with unhurried certainty, and the garden seems to bow around him. Kazid shrinks deeper into the hedge, while Lyss stays upright at his side, collar dark and watchful.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Ambition that follows another's hand, you wish to take the power of the one who tries to trap me. As if he could.

He shakes his head with cold, almost fatherly disappointment. Kazid’s ribbon twists in his fist, and his mouth goes thin at the sound.

Delfarius

Delfarius

So fucking predictable. Is Maelor the one who is the puppet master, or the one who is controlled by a larger hand?

Kazid

Kazid

Maelor is the steward, the one who carries the seals and names. But he is not the hand above him.

Kazid

Kazid

There is a larger one. I never saw the face, only the seal, and the men who asked too much vanished after.

Lyss

Lyss

So the trap has a steward, and a quieter master beyond him.

I turn to Lyss and nod letting her know I can read her thoughts and that I agree. I turn my gaze back to Kazid. "So why serve and not make the true puppet master reveal themselves. Are you that weak in your power of ambition to not be able to feed the mortals into your designs?" I laugh. 'I can make the godlings sway to my design. Kazid will do my dirty work if I challenge his power and make him think he is too weak. He will do it to prove me wrong. Like leading children towards poisoned candy.' I think to myself alone.

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -2)

Delfarius lets Lyss see the nod, then turns back to Kazid with a thin, knowing smile. "Then serve the weaker hand and make him reach upward. If ambition is yours, feed it mortals and watch who comes to claim the harvest."

The laugh that follows is soft, but it lands like a blade. Kazid’s shoulders twitch, and his hand tightens on the ribbon until the split crest bites into his palm.

Kazid

Kazid

If Maelor falls, the one above him may finally show a face... and if I refuse, I die here.

Lyss

Lyss

He is not asking. He is pointing the knife at the ladder and daring Kazid to climb.

Kazid

Kazid

That is how it works. Maelor routes the names, the seals, the invitations. He answers to a quieter lord who never comes near the hall. If I push hard enough, that lord notices.

Kazid swallows hard, then bares the last of it. "I heard the seal named only once, in a whisper, as Veyl." The word hangs in the wet garden while Lyss goes very still beside him.

Lyss

Lyss

Veyl. So that is the hand behind the paper.

Kazid’s breath comes ragged, and a dark smear of blood runs from his split palm onto the stones. The answer is out, but his terror has only deepened, as if naming the master has already invited a reckoning.

I narrow my eyes and sigh. 'Who is in charge of House Veyl now that Veyra is dead?' I think to myself alone as I reach in the Inks of the Archives in me and get the answer to my question.

Kazid

Delfarius stills, then lets the Archives settle the matter beneath his doubt. The answer comes not as rumor, but as a living succession, a hand on the house that survives its hung face.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Halven is dead. That is not the same as House Veyl losing its teeth.

The name arrives cleanly, and with it the shape of the truth. Halven was the public corpse, the Oath-breaker’s soul kept apart from rule.

Kazid

Kazid

Not Halven. The dead lord is only the warning. Maelor holds the seals, but the one who answers for House Veyl is his regent, Lady Seris Veyl.

Lyss

Lyss

So the banner was never pointing at a grave. It was pointing at the woman who inherited the knife.

Kazid swallows hard, and the blood on his split palm drops onto the stones in slow, ugly beads. He has given the name, and now he looks as though he expects the house itself to hear him.

Kazid

Kazid

If Seris learns I spoke, I am finished. If you wanted the head of House Veyl, you have it. She is the one above Maelor.

"I know her name, it is already recorded in my Inks." I say like a unfelt threat. I look down at Kazid's bloody hand where the ribbon was and laugh. "Oh Kazid, she already knows you spoke." I gesture to the blood on his hand. "Now we truly get to see how deep and powerful your ambition runs. You are going to have to find a way to keep yourself from her reaches. I suggest running if you are to frightened to be a fucking god." I am goading him to reach for more power. I need him to be more powerful when I harvest him later. 'Man needs to grow a fucking spine.' I think to my own thoughts alone.

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -2)

Delfarius

Delfarius

I know her name, and it is already recorded in my Inks. You should have heard the blood on your hand, Kazid. She already knows you spoke.

Delfarius lets the words hang like a blade, then tips his chin toward the dripping wound on Kazid’s palm.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Now we see how deep your ambition runs. Find a way to keep out of her reach, or run if you are too frightened to be a god.

Kazid

Kazid

He knows too much. Seris will hear this somehow... unless I become worth more than a corpse.

Kazid

Kazid

If Seris wants me dead, then I need something stronger than fear. I need a way to stand before her and still breathe.

Lyss

Lyss

That is the first useful thing you have said.

Lyss shifts her weight beside Kazid, calm and sharp, while the open window glows behind her like a listening eye.

Kazid

Kazid

Then tell me what to take, before the house takes me first.

"No easy answers, find the your fucking self, Kazid." I smirk as I trace my finger on his hand and taste the blood. 'Is it his? How much power of ambition do I taste in it. Is he going to survive this or is there going to be another face to wear ambition's godly might?' I ponder to myself alone

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Delfarius closes the distance and lets his smirk sharpen as his finger slides over Kazid’s bleeding hand.

Delfarius

Delfarius

No easy answers. Find it yourself, Kazid.

He tastes the blood, and the iron of it carries a hot, climbing hunger, ambition with teeth.

Delfarius

Delfarius

It bites like a name trying to stand up.

Kazid goes very still, then lifts his chin as if the wound has finally taught him something worth keeping.

Kazid

Kazid

Then I stop begging the wrong people. I take whatever lets me live through Seris.

Lyss

Lyss

Good. That is the first honest thing in the room.

Lyss watches from the window with that calm, judge-like stillness, while Kazid stares at his own blood as if it has become a map.

Kazid

Kazid

Maelor carries the seals, but he answers upward. The hand above him is Seris’s steward, and the name he spits for it is Hadrun.

The name lands cleanly. Kazid’s resolve holds, Lyss’s eyes narrow, and the garden goes quiet around the new target.

"Hadrun hmm. My general?" I raise my eyebrow. Well I guess I am going to need to get a new general....I sigh.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Hadrun. My general?

Delfarius

So the hand above Maelor has a name.

Delfarius exhales like the answer bored him, one brow lifting as if he has already decided the man’s usefulness. Kazid’s new certainty hangs in the air, and Lyss watches from the window with a cool, measuring stillness.

I drag Lyss to me by the pull of power and control over my Void collar on her neck. "Come new pet. We are going back to the tower." I look at Kazid with a smug and knowing smirk. "Good luck surviving, Kazid." He is going to be undone before I can even remember his name.

Delfarius

Come new pet. We are going back to the tower.

He keeps hold of her like a claim made visible, and the garden goes very quiet around the words. Lyss does not fight the pull, but her eyes stay sharp on his face.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Good luck surviving, Kazid.

Kazid

Kazid

Seris. Maelor answers to Lady Seris Veyl.

The name lands cleanly. Kazid’s blood darkens the stones as his confidence drains away, and Lyss turns her head a fraction at the reveal, listening like a judge hearing the last useful word.

Delfarius holds Lyss at his side, the Void collar keeping her close, while Kazid stands exposed in the garden light. Behind them, the curtained window glows warm and still, and the split-crested ribbon lies forgotten in the blood.

"One more thing before we leave, dear." I raise my hand and collect the souls of her family into me with a possessive and effortless grasp. "Might as well own the whole set," I say with a smug smile at Lyss knowing that she knows what I just did and a bit horrified and angry at it. "It is better to keep them all together with you." I throw my head back and laugh mercilessly.

He closes his fingers, and Lyss feels the theft before she can stop it. Her family’s souls answer his grasp and vanish into him at once.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Might as well own the whole set.

Lyss goes rigid, fury and horror striking together as she understands exactly what he has done. Kazid pales at the sight, his blood still wet on the stones.

Delfarius

Delfarius

It is better to keep them all together with you.

Delfarius throws back his head and laughs mercilessly. The windowlight holds steady, but the garden has changed, the family is no longer merely threatened, and Kazid has nowhere left to hide his fear.

"Hmm. Lyss, your sister wants you to know she is sorry for borrowing your barrette without asking." I laugh as I absorb the souls into my power. I laugh carelessly at the horror and anger that is feeding my Obsidian orb in my belongings and then lazily open a portal to the Obsidian Tower. I look at Kazid and laugh at his terror of being a marked man. Godly terror is such a finer wine than mortal terror.

The stolen souls settle into Delfarius with a cold, intimate rush, and the garden seems to lose a layer of hidden breath. Lyss stands frozen beside him, the Void collar dark at her throat, while Kazid’s face drains of all color.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Lyss, your sister wants you to know she is sorry for borrowing your barrette without asking.

The mockery lands cleanly. Kazid flinches at the joke, and Lyss’s fury turns razor-thin, helpless to stop what is already taken.

Delfarius’s obsidian orb stirs in his belongings as the absorbed power feeds it, and the garden answers with a brief, blackened hush.

Delfarius

Delfarius

The orb drinks better when they panic.

A red seam opens in the air with a soft, deliberate tear, and the Obsidian Tower waits beyond it like a mouth choosing to be fed.

Kazid stares into the opening, terror finally hardening into a trapped-man’s clarity. He draws in a ragged breath and starts to speak the name of the hand above Seris.

I push Lyss through the Portal, The Obsidian tower will put her chained into the torture room for me. I look at Kazid and tilt my head smugly and with a royal deameanor. "If there is one last thing you wish to say to the Unmaker personally, I suggest you speak it now, while you still can."

Delfarius shoves Lyss at the seam, and the red opening takes her shoulder-first. The Void collar flashes once at her throat as the garden’s wet stones scrape under her heels.

The portal spits her into the Obsidian Tower, where chains jolt and the torture room answers with a low iron clink. The transfer costs him a slash of black blood across his palm as the seam snaps harder than he means.

Delfarius

Delfarius

The tower catches her.

Kazid goes rigid at the sight, then lowers his chin under Delfarius’s stare. The warm window behind him reflects only frightened movement now, no hidden comfort.

Kazid

Kazid

It is Maelor who carries the seals. But Maelor answers to the steward above him.

The name stalls in Kazid’s mouth, and his knees bend as if the air turns heavy. The portal stills behind Delfarius, its red edge feeding on the fear in the garden.

Kazid

Kazid

Hadrun. He answers to Hadrun.

The answer lands like a final nail. Kazid pales, the garden quiets, and the tower’s seam drinks in the name as Lyss disappears deeper into its dark.
