Above the dark stairwell, Delfarius lets the stolen ledgers slip from his grasp. Ink, names, and histories peel apart into a black drift, drawn upward toward the Endless Archives like filings to a hidden magnet.
Below them, the Broker waits in Edrin Vale's stolen face, hands half-raised as if he can bargain with the floor itself. Pistol and Stabby exchange a wary glance, then look back to Delfarius.

Delfarius
Explain why you want me down there so badly.

The Broker
Because it is answering to your name. The trap is awake, and it is learning the shape of the city through you.

Pistol
That sounds bad. That sounds very bad.

Stabby McStabbson
Stab?
The stairwell exhales a cold breath. From below, the seam gives a thin, listening pulse, as if something ancient is pressing one eye open.

“"And I care....because?" I smirk at the Broker with his wrongness of his face. "Oakhaven has always sucked, no matter when."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Delfarius
And I care... because?

Delfarius
Oakhaven has always sucked, no matter when.
Delfarius’s smirk cuts cleanly through the stairwell chill. The Broker’s borrowed face twitches, as if the wrongness of it is suddenly harder to hide.

The Broker
Because it is not choosing a victim, it is choosing a voice. Yours has already reached below.

Pistol
That is the worst possible answer. I hate that answer.

Stabby McStabbson
Stab? Stab!

The Broker
The thing under this floor tastes names the way wolves taste blood. It learns the shape of a person by the echo they leave in a place.

The Broker
And yours is the loudest here. That is why I want you down there, before it learns enough to open without me.
“I stroke my chin hairs and smirk. "I think you want me below because if it has the voice and the power that will mean something greater...isn't that the true shape of this?" I look at the Broker and read his thoughts like I am reading a script on a page.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -3)

Delfarius
The Broker’s fear is not for the floor. It is for what answers from it.

Delfarius
I think you want me below because the thing gains voice, and voice means power. That is the true shape of this, isn't it?
Delfarius strokes his chin, smirk sharp, and watches the Broker’s face as if it is a page being turned.
The Broker’s borrowed features go still, then fracture into something rawer. His eyes flick once toward the seam, once toward Delfarius, and the answer arrives before his mouth does.

The Broker
Yes. It is building a throat. Your name is the shape it needs to finish it.

The Broker
And if it learns you, it can wear you long enough to open the rest of the house.
The stairwell pulse deepens, cold breathing up through the landing. Black ink drips from the dissolved ledgers onto Delfarius’s sleeve, and the Broker winces as if the sound alone costs him.
“Is this the tower's old throat? Beneath Oakhaven?”

Delfarius
So this is the tower's old throat, beneath Oakhaven?

The Broker
No. Older. A mouth the tower found and learned to use.

The Broker
It remembers names by swallowing them, then fitting them into a shape that can open.
“I roll my eyes. 'So many mouths and throats and other such nonsense. I just can't have a peaceful eternal existence can I?' I think to my thoughts alone. I wonder to myself. Can I just use this older power to my own means?”

Delfarius
Delfarius rolls his eyes at the talk of mouths and throats, then lets the idea turn over in silence. Old power, if it can be bent, can be taken.
The Broker watches him from the lip of the stair, face taut with urgency as the seam below gives another slow, attentive pulse. Pistol and Stabby hold still, listening.
“I narrow my eyes and think a bit more to myself. 'But if I take this power into myself, will it just raise up the old hunger again, or can I redirect it to something more useful than a basic need and want?'”
Delfarius’s silence sharpens the air. The Broker draws a slow breath, then glances down into the stairwell as if measuring how much of the truth it can swallow.

The Broker
If you take it, it will not stay as hunger. It will become shape, purpose, a law you can aim.

The Broker
But if you let it feed on itself first, it will open wider than a need ever should.
“I glare at the Broker. "Edrin stop pretending, it is quite insulting."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)
Delfarius’s glare pins the Broker in place. The wrong face seems to tighten under the pressure, as if the borrowed features cannot quite hold the strain.

Delfarius
Edrin stop pretending, it is quite insulting.

The Broker
A thin, humorless breath escapes him. "Then stop calling me by a corpse’s name. I am only the hand that found this door before you did."

The Broker
He lifts one finger toward the stair. "The hunger below is old work. It swallows names, worries them down, and spits out a shape that can answer back. That is how it learns."

Pistol
Her grip tightens on the mechanical squirrel. "So it is not just a trap. It is trying to talk."

Stabby McStabbson
Stabby shifts his weight, eyes fixed on the seam. "Bad floor. Bad mouth."
The seam below gives a slow, listening pulse. Somewhere deeper, the air answers with a faint, wet rustle, like a throat testing its own shape.
“"Oh then I know what this is...the old machine I once fed Edrin Vale to." I laugh darkly. I reach out towards this old mouth, old machine. I take it's power into me. If anyone is eating names and shapes it will be me alone, no one or nothing else.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Delfarius reaches for the seam, and the black stairwell answers like a mouth recognizing the hand that fed it. Cold surges up his arm, not pain, but a sudden claiming pull.

Delfarius
Old machine. Old appetite.
The pulse below changes. It does not lunge, it yields, and the listening hollow in the stair folds toward him as if opening its throat.
Ink threads rise from the dissolved ledgers and spiral into his fingers, then into his sleeve, then deeper, as the trap’s shape is drawn inward and taken.

The Broker
By the black vaults... it chose you.
The mirror stall catches a hungry glint, while the stair seam narrows to a marked slit under Delfarius’s command. The pressure in the landing shifts, as if the house itself has just lost its teeth.

Pistol
So that is what it wanted.
The Broker takes one careful step back, staring at the changed seam, and waits for Delfarius to decide whether he is leading or descending.

Take the trap below into your command
“I look at my hand "Ah yes...I understand now. The old paths machines. This one was called Veyra. It judges the significance of a name and tests if it is worthy of being called what it is. Silly old machines." I unravel the script and program of the old Veyra machinations. It's power is now my power, my will. My path no one elses path.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled -2)

Delfarius’s hand stays lifted over the slit, and the black mark beneath it begins to unravel into tiny, obedient threads. The old script strips itself bare, revealing a judging logic under the hunger, a rite that measures a name, weighs it, then decides what answer it deserves.

Delfarius
Ah. A name-test, not a bite.
The seam drinks in the correction, and the listening pulse changes shape. What was a hidden throat becomes a mapped path, one he can feel branching through the stone like a vein under skin.
A thin sting of cold snaps across his palm as the last knot gives way. The power does not vanish, it settles, folded into his will, and the stair answers to him with a quiet, chastened shiver.

The Broker
You just took its judgment out of the dark.

Pistol
Then it can be pointed.
The mirror stall throws back a sharper glint, and the stairwell slit remains marked and still. The room has changed from a threshold into a possession, but the Broker watches Delfarius with fresh alarm, as if the real cost has only just occurred to him.

“I throw back my head at the broker and fold my arms across my chest. "Now what do you have to try to trap me, little man?"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)
Delfarius throws his head back and folds his arms, and the gesture lands like a verdict over the landing. The seam below stays obedient, but the room tightens around the Broker’s answer.

Delfarius
Now what do you have to try to trap me with, little man?
The Broker flinches, then looks from Delfarius to the marked slit, as if weighing whether to lie. The cold from the stair turns thin and sharp, threading the chamber with a warning that does not belong to the stair anymore.

The Broker
Not another trap. A key, if I still had the hand to keep it.

The Broker
He has already taken the judgment. If I speak wrong, he will take the rest.
Pistol tilts her chin toward the lower dark, grim amusement fading into focus, while Stabby shifts his feet and bares himself toward the stair. The mirror stall catches a hungry glint, and the buried catalogue shelf seems to sit lower in the wall, as if listening too.

The Broker
The thing below feeds on names that answer back. What I brought was a false answer, a face it could wear long enough to open doors. When it learned yours, it began to need you more than it needed me.
He swallows hard and lifts one hand, empty now, the motion small and costly. Ink still clings to Delfarius’s sleeve from the vanished ledgers, and the chamber holds its breath around the Broker’s confession.

“I go over to the mirror and send the glinting hunger where it belongs. Sealed safely in the Iron Box in my Obsidian Tower. I walk over to the Broker with an unhurried pace. I chuckle low and cruelly as I step. I use his own voice and cadence and speak his thoughts out loud to him. "He has already taken the judgment. If I speak wrong, he will take the rest." I stop when I am right in front of him then lean in, arms still crossed over my chest. "Tell me, what is the rest? Hmm?"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Delfarius crosses to the mirror stall at an easy pace, and the faint glint in the glass drains sideways as if pulled by a hook only he can feel. The black seam beneath the landing stays quiet, while his sleeve drinks in the last drifting ink from the dead ledgers.
He turns from the stall with the glint already gone, and walks back toward the Broker like the answer has been decided before the question is finished.

Delfarius
He has already taken the judgment. If I speak wrong, he will take the rest.
The words come out in the Broker’s own cadence, and the stolen face on him goes slack with recognition. Pistol’s gaze hardens at the stair, and Stabby shifts one foot back, ready to spring.

Delfarius
Tell me, what is the rest? Hmm?

The Broker
The rest is what I cut away before the thing below learned to keep me. A remainder, a spare edge of command. It still remembers how to invite, how to listen, how to wear a voice long enough to open a door.

The Broker
If you take it, you take the last clean piece of the bargain. If you do not, the house keeps hunting for the next name that answers.
“I lash a potent bolt of pure Void and shadow to the true Broker that is standing behind me and Behind Pistol. I laugh as the man falls down, sizzling on void and smoke breathless and dead.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Combat Magic, rolled +2)

Delfarius lashes the void behind him. The spell snaps through the air and finds the true Broker's hidden shape at the edge of the landing, where it blooms into black fire and smoke.
The body folds hard against the floorboards, sizzling, its borrowed breath cut off at once. Pistol jerks around with a sharp, startled twist, and Stabby flinches toward the stair lip.

The Broker
No... not like this...
The false face in front of Delfarius goes slack and vacant as the blow lands somewhere deeper than skin. The mirror stall’s hungry glint trembles once, then steadies.

Pistol
That was him. Right there. Ugh, I hate this place.
Below them, the black stairwell seam answers with a wet, listening pulse, as if it has just been taught a new word and is deciding what to do with it.
The Broker lies smoking at the landing edge, and the room shifts with the ugly fact of it. Whatever he was holding back is now exposed, and the stair waits for Delfarius to decide whether to take it or leave it broken.

New Gift: Broker's Essence Absorption
The character's shadow magic spills out of their eyes and hands uncontrollably.
“I reach down towards the stairs and take what ever power is still down there into myself and let it's magic empower me. I look to Pistol afterwards and let out a small laugh. "I agree, Pistol. Should we leave this place?" Stabby agrees in his way and Pistol responds.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +4)

Delfarius lowers his hand into the seam, and the black stair answers. Old pressure climbs his arm, then floods inward, cold as iron and sharp as a fresh oath.

Delfarius
I agree, Pistol. Should we leave this place?
His eyes and fingers bleed shadow at once, the volatile spill running with the anger still hot in him. The spill does not break him, it feeds the draw, and the stair’s pulse thins to a disciplined hush.

Stabby McStabbson
Stabby says, leave.

Pistol
Yes. Please. Before it learns anything else.
Black sigils crawl over the first step, not as a warning, but as a map. The buried catalogue shelf glints once in the dark, while the mirror stall keeps its hungry shine fixed on Delfarius.
The new power settles under his skin, keyed to his blood and ready to answer. The Broker lies broken at the landing, and the stair below waits, listening for which voice Delfarius uses next.
The character's shadow magic spills out of their eyes and hands uncontrollably.
“I send all the buried catalogues, all the maps all of the information that should not be left in mortal hands and send it to my Obsidian Tower. I narrow my eyes at the hungry shine in the mirror and send it back where it belongs....into the Iron Box in the Obsidian Tower. For good measure I step on the Broker's head crushing it beneath my heel. No pretending you are dead. You will be dead.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +2)

Delfarius stamps down with his heel, and the Broker’s broken face caves into the floorboards with a dull crack. Black ink shudders loose from the landing, yanked toward the Obsidian Tower in a thin, obedient stream.
The buried catalogue shelf answers first, its hidden drawers coughing out strips of map-light and old indexing marks. They peel free, rise in a dark spiral, and vanish as if the tower itself is drinking them through a seam.
The mirror stall flashes with that same hungry glint, but it gutters under Delfarius’s gaze. The shine folds inward, shrinking into a hard, caged pulse that feels suddenly far away, as though trapped in iron.
Pistol recoils a step, then stares at the disappearing records with open disgust. Stabby holds his crouch, blade-ready, watching the stair seam like it might bite back.

Pistol
So that is where all of it goes. Good. Take it somewhere it cannot be used against anyone else.
The Broker jolts under the boot, one hand twitching against the boards, but he does not rise. The seam below the steps gives a soft, listening throb, now calmer, now waiting.

Stabby McStabbson
Goblin says, done? Or more killing?

“I turn to Stabby and tilt my head amused at his remark. My grin grows more cold and filled with malice. "Well, Stabby I don't see any others to kill in here...well." I laugh loudly and watch and make sure that the records and the other things the broker stole from me is secured safely in the Endless Archives in my Obsidian Tower. I want Stabby to feel uneasy at me, I am not going to kill him or Pistol. Well at least not yet.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +2)

Delfarius turns from the stair and lets his grin sharpen on Stabby, all cold amusement and easy cruelty. The records are already gone from the room, rising where they belong, and the sight of that fact seems to settle him further.

Delfarius
Well, Stabby, I do not see any others to kill in here... well.
He laughs, loud enough to make the landing feel smaller. Shadow still smears faintly from his fingers as if the anger in him has teeth of its own.

Stabby McStabbson
That is not a joke. That is a warning.
The black stream of stolen ledgers thins to a final ribbon and vanishes into the tower’s pull, leaving the shelf hollowed and bare. The mirror stall keeps its sealed glint, distant now, trapped and useless.

Pistol
Good. Then let them stay gone. I am tired of people keeping secrets in walls.

Stabby McStabbson
Goblin says, uneasy now.
Delfarius holds the room with one look, and neither of them misses the promise inside it. Below, the stair’s listening pulse stays quiet, waiting for his next word or his next step.

The character's shadow magic spills out of their eyes and hands uncontrollably.
“I let my laughter linger, throwing my head back. "Fucking with you, Stabby. Or am I? " I get a cold serious expression on my face as I kneel down to Stabby's level. When I see Stabby swallow hard, hearing Stabby wonder if the fact that I have my hand outstretched like I am about to snap my finger and unmake him I laugh loudly again at his fear and expression of horror on his face. "Want to leave this place? Take my hands you two. I can transport us all to a less dangerous place." Pistol remarks how adults are wierd.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -2)

Delfarius lets the laughter run out of him and sinks into a crouch beside Stabby, then eases lower until they are eye to eye. The black stair remains quiet behind them, listening, while the sealed mirror glints like a held breath.

Delfarius
Fucking with you, Stabby. Or am I?
He flashes the shape of a threat with an outstretched hand, and Stabby’s throat bobs hard in answer. Pistol snorts once, watching the exchange with open disgust and reluctant amusement.

Delfarius
Want to leave this place? Take my hands, both of you. I can take us somewhere less dangerous.

Pistol
Adults are weird.

Stabby McStabbson
Less dangerous sounds good. Goblin says yes, but goblin says do not trick me.
A thin seam of shadow spills between Delfarius’s fingers and curls around his palms as the spell takes hold. The landing tilts, the room folds tight, and the three of them vanish from the Filigreed Diamond in a sting of cold dark.
“Do I want to let Stabby and Pistol loose in Orosia?”
NO (Even, rolled 80)
Delfarius stands amidst the swirling shadows of the transport, his gaze lingering on the two companions he has chosen to keep close. He considers the weight of their presence in Orosia, and the cold certainty of his own intent settles in his mind like stone.

Delfarius
They are better off as ghosts of my own making, not loose threads in a city that already knows my name.
