A century passes like a blink. Delfarius steps out of his workshop, where the Loom and Anvil rest quiet behind him, and the air of the new age meets him cool and crisp.

Delfarius
New adventures and new stories to write.
He wears a mortal face to mortal eyes, plain enough to vanish into the crowd. Oakhaven opens around him, cobblestones bright with morning light, market stalls heavy with cloth, bread, spice, and fruit.
Mortals move past in easy laughter, carrying baskets and bargaining over bolts of dyed wool. None of them look up long enough to know the Architect walks among them.
Delfarius lets the city flow around him and turns toward its heart, amused by the noise of life he has made. A ribboned child darts by with a loaf, and somewhere ahead a bell gives one clear, distant note.
At the end of the market street, a black-cloaked courier stands still beneath an awning, holding out a sealed letter marked with unfamiliar crimson wax.
“I look over to the town crier and ask him in between his announcements what the name of the city is. I am still appearing as a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses.”

The crier’s voice carries over the market, and Delfarius turns his head just enough to catch the next proclamation. As the man draws breath for another announcement, the name of the city comes easily enough, unchanged and ordinary in the morning air.
“I look to the crier and in between his announcements I plainly ask. "What is the name of the city I find myself in? I am just a traveler here." I am just a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses.”

Delfarius
What is the name of this city? Just a traveler passing through.

The Crier
Oakhaven, friend. Oakhaven, by charter and bell.
The crier continues on without missing a beat, and the market keeps moving around the brief exchange.

Discover what flaw in Oakhaven's mortal order has surfaced
“I shake my head and walk away from the square. "Of course it had to be Oakhaven." I mumble to myself. I laugh. It is my Oakhaven now so that means more than it did before. I am just a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses.”
Delfarius turns from the square and drifts away with a quiet laugh, letting Oakhaven’s bells and chatter carry on behind him. To mortal eyes, he is only another traveler with a mild grin and an easy step.
“I look over and see a little goblin and a girl that reminds me of someone I once created run into an alleyway being followed behind by city guards. I chuckle. Let's see what this is. I am still looking like a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses.”

Around the next bend, Delfarius catches motion, a little goblin and a girl darting hard into a side alley, with two city guards hurrying after them. He lets out a low chuckle and angles after the disturbance, easy as a man taking a stroll.
“I walk calmly up to the city guards following the two. "I need to report a murder, the next alley over. I saw a goblin and a girl go down that way." I point to another alleyway besides the one they ran down. I am still just looking like a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +2)

Delfarius drifts up beside the guards with an easy mortal step, just another man in the street. He points past them toward a different mouth of the lane, where a second path splits between the stalls.

Delfarius
I need to report a murder. It is in the next alley over. I saw a goblin and a girl go down that way.
Guard heads turn at once. City Guard 1 slows, spear angling toward the fresh alley, while City Guard 2 checks the wrong turn and starts to pivot away from the chase.

City Guard 1
A murder? Which alley?
The goblin and the girl are no longer in sight, swallowed by the bend. The guards commit to Delfarius’s direction instead, and the first alley is left behind them.

City Guard 2
Move, then. If this is true, we cut them off.
Oakhaven’s chase turns cleanly on his word. The guards peel toward the false lead, opening the street and revealing, for one cold breath, how quickly their order follows a stranger’s lie.

“I watch the guards go down the wrong way then I calmly walk into the alleyway where the girl and goblin are. I still look like a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Delfarius slips into the alley as if the stone and shadow already know his name. The market sound thins behind him, and the wrong turn vanishes from sight.
Ahead, the goblin and the girl are caught in the narrow corridor of brick and hanging cloth. They have already stopped running.

Stabby McStabbson
Stab? Stabby.

Pistol
You picked the wrong alley for a scare.
Delfarius keeps his mortal pace, unhurried and plain to mortal eyes. The goblin’s grip tightens, but he does not charge.

Stabby McStabbson
Stabby.
Pistol glances past Delfarius toward the empty street mouth. Far off, the guards keep moving the other way.

Pistol
If you are here for them, they are already gone.

Learn why the goblin and the girl stopped running
“I smirk a small knowing look. I remember these two. Pistol and Stabby Mcstabbson. They were entertaining. I still look like a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses. "I know. I sent them the wrong way. The guards are looking for you on the other side of town. Now I am curious, why were you running from them?" If I remember, Pistol liked candy. I reach into my pocket and hold out a small sweet. I made Pistol to take over my throne to the Void before. Intresting.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Delfarius lets the alley hold its breath, then smiles as if greeting old entertainment rather than prey. He reaches into his pocket and offers the sweet to Pistol, his voice mild and precise.

Delfarius
I know you. I sent the guards the wrong way. So, why were you running?

Pistol
Because they think I am carrying something I should not have. And because Oakhaven likes to punish girls before it asks questions.

Stabby McStabbson
Stabby not like cages. Stabby run because spear-men chase.
Pistol’s gaze drops to the sweet in Delfarius’s hand before she takes a careful half-step nearer. Stabby does not lower his knife, but his shoulders loosen by a hair.

Pistol
If you remember us, then you remember I like candy. That still does not make you safe.

Stabby McStabbson
Wrong man knows names. Stabby remembers dark man. Big smile. Bad luck.
The sweet changes hands. Pistol keeps it cupped, not yet eating, while her eyes stay on Delfarius instead of the alley mouth. The market noise feels far away now, and the girl speaks with careful, guarded curiosity.

Pistol
If you truly sent them away, then maybe you are not here to hand us over. Tell me, why do you remember us?

Small sweet
“I smirk. These two did not hear me say I remembered them from before. That was a thought just for myself alone. I laugh and still look like a mortal man to their mortal eyes and mortal senses. They both just remember me saying the last question I asked them. Nothing else. “I know you. I sent the guards the wrong way. So, why were you running?””
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +0)
Delfarius’s smile widens, but he keeps the private recognition buried behind it. The alley narrows around the three of them, all timber, dust, and listening silence.

Delfarius
I know you. I sent the guards the wrong way. So, why were you running?

Pistol
Because they wanted a body to blame, and mine was nearest. That is how Oakhaven works when it gets nervous.

Stabby McStabbson
Stabby run because spear-men shout. Girl run because town mean.
Pistol turns the sweet in her fingers, not eating it yet. Her eyes stay on Delfarius, testing the shape of his calm like it might crack.

Pistol
You sent them away too easily. That means you know how to steer people, or how to make them afraid. Which is it?

Stabby McStabbson
Dark man not like guards. Dark man like trouble. Trouble maybe useful.
A beat of market noise drifts down the alley mouth, then fades again. Pistol finally lifts the sweet closer, still not biting, as if waiting to see whether Delfarius answers like a man or a blade.

Test Pistol’s trust
“I lean down like a long lost father, with a knowing smile. I still look like a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses. I cause a small curl of darkness bloom into my hand and turn into a Void Rose. "Maybe I did it because I saw something I recognized." I smirk. I want her to see I do shadow-weave also.”
SUCCESS (Good Shadow Manipulation, rolled +0)

Delfarius leans in with that same easy, dangerous warmth, and the alley seems to narrow around the gesture. His smile says familiarity, but his eyes stay sharp.

Delfarius
Maybe I did see something I recognized.
A curl of darkness gathers in his hand, small as a breath, then opens into a black rose with faint void-light at its edges.
Pistol stills. Her fingers tighten around the sweet, and her gaze drops to the flower before rising back to his face.

Pistol
That is not the answer of a man guessing. It is the answer of someone who already knows me.

Stabby McStabbson
Stabby say dark man show teeth with pretty flower. That mean trouble.
Pistol lets out a short, unwilling breath that is almost a laugh, then angles the sweet away from her mouth without eating it.

Pistol
You want me looking at the trick, or at the hand making it? Because I am looking at both.
“I give her the flower with a practiced warm smile. I look like a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses. "I mean you no harm, if I wanted to harm either of you I would have." I laugh softly.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +2)
Delfarius lowers the void rose into Pistol’s waiting hand, his smile warm enough to pass for mortal. The flower drinks the alley light and gives back a thin, dark gleam.

Delfarius
I mean you no harm. If I wanted to harm either of you, I would have.
His soft laugh slips between the stalls. Stabby narrows his eyes, but Pistol does not step back.

Pistol
That was a clean lie, if it was one. Or a clean truth, if you mean it.

Stabby McStabbson
Stabby say flower-man talk pretty. Pretty talk still can bite.
Pistol turns the rose once, studying the edge of its shadowed petals, then looks up with guarded interest rather than fear.

Pistol
You hand me a dark flower and speak plain. That makes you rarer than the guards, at least.
The alley stays quiet around them, market noise muffled at the mouth, while Pistol keeps the rose instead of giving it back.
“I walk a step away from them both looking back towards the way I came from. 'I gave Pistol false memories of a father so she would have that kindness as she was young.' I think to my thoughts alone. 'She is also looking for more knowledge to her powers, and she had a mechanical squirrel I thought.' I think to my own thoughts alone. I turn a pace away then look at them both. "Sorry if my help was unwanted, I just thought I would assist." I look and see the mechanical squirrel, Rocket sticking out of Pistol's pocket. I chuckle a bit at the adult joke. A pocket rocket hidden away. Pistol notices my glance and introduces me to Rocket.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -2)

Delfarius eases a step away from Pistol and Stabby, then turns back with a small, easy shrug. The alley stays quiet, market noise breathing at its mouth.

Delfarius
She is searching for more knowledge, and that creature in her pocket looks useful.

Delfarius
Sorry if my help was unwanted. I only meant to assist.
Pistol’s attention shifts to the bright lump at her pocket, and a tiny mechanical squirrel peeks out from the fold of cloth.

Delfarius
Pocket rocket.
Delfarius gives a low chuckle at the little thing, the joke warm but brief. The sound costs him a sliver of his composure, and Stabby’s eyes narrow at the familiarity in it.

Pistol
This is Rocket. He travels with me.
Pistol lifts the squirrel fully into view, her guarded face softening into a cautious little pride. The flower stays tucked in her other hand, and she looks between it, Rocket, and Delfarius as if measuring all three.

Stabby McStabbson
Hmph. Flower-man notices useful things. Maybe less trouble than he looks.
Pistol holds Rocket steady in her palm and studies Delfarius with fresh curiosity instead of retreat. The alley feels a touch less sharp, and the next question hangs on her tongue.
“"How cute. I use to have a little mechanical also. Long ago." My smile is warm. 'Yes a whole race of mechanical men and women' I think to my thoughts alone. Pistol looks at me as asks me if I know of her Shadow Daddy since she has not met anyone else yet that knows how to shadow-weave. I just chuckle warmly. 'Shadow Daddy. I should have my pets in the Tower call me that.' I think to myself and my thoughts alone. I still look like a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Delfarius
How cute. I used to have one like that, long ago.
Delfarius smiles warm as summer light over a grave, and the little squirrel in Pistol’s hand catches his attention like a memory with teeth.

Delfarius
A whole race of mechanical men and women, once.

Pistol
Really? You know things like me?
Pistol’s pride steadies instead of fading. Rocket stays perched in her palm, twitching its tiny head toward Delfarius as if listening.

Pistol
Do you know my Shadow Daddy? I have not met anyone else who shadow-weaves.
Stabby’s knife hand loosens a fraction. The alley quiets around them, market noise soft at the mouth like a distant tide.

Delfarius
Shadow Daddy. I should have my pets in the Tower call me that.
Delfarius gives a low, warm chuckle instead of biting. Pistol watches him closely, curious now rather than wary, as if that answer changes the shape of him.
“"Shadow Daddy?" I tilt my head towards her. I chuckle warmly and Stabby tells Pistol in his special way she should not ask everyone who weaves shadow that. Pistol eats her candy I gave her and tells me more about her backstory.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Delfarius tilts his head with a low chuckle, and the warmth in it draws Pistol in instead of pushing her away. Stabby snorts a warning in his own rough way, telling her not to hand out “Shadow Daddy” so freely.

Stabby McStabbson
That word is not for everyone who shadows.

Pistol
But he knows things. And Rocket likes him.
Pistol breaks off a bit of candy, pops it into her mouth, and leans her shoulder against the stall post with new ease. Rocket twitches in her palm, bright-eyed and restless, while the alley stays quiet around them.

Pistol
I was little when I woke up with nothing. No name, no home, just me and Rocket. Then I learned shadows could hide me better than walls.

Pistol
He doesn’t laugh like the guards do. He sounds like he remembers things.

Pistol
I ask because shadow weaving feels like family, maybe. If you know my Shadow Daddy, then maybe you know why I’m still here.
Stabby watches her talk, measuring the way she relaxes, while the market’s distant noise hums at the alley mouth. Pistol keeps looking at Delfarius now, curious and open, waiting for him to answer the shape of her story.
“I look to Stabby and smirk. "I wasn't shadowing, I just happened to come across you two in a dilemma." I laugh warmly, practiced then turn back to Pistol. "I am not sure I know who your family is. Do you know what your Daddy looks like?" I am still just a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses. Stabby looks at me and realizes that most humans besides Pistol can not understand him. He get a bit more wary of me.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)
Delfarius lets the smirk deepen, then turns it toward Stabby with practiced ease, making the jab sound like a harmless correction instead of a trap.

Delfarius
I was not shadowing you. I just happened to find you both in a dilemma.
His warm laugh slips out cleanly, and Stabby’s eyes narrow at the sweetness of it, wary now of how easily human words fail around him.

Delfarius
I am not sure I know your family. What does your Daddy look like?
Pistol’s curiosity sharpens instead of fading. She looks past Delfarius for a heartbeat, then back again, as if sorting memory from longing.

Pistol
He looks like shadow first, then a person. I remember that much. Why?

Stabby McStabbson
Most humans miss my words. He is listening wrong, but he is listening.
Stabby shifts his grip and grows a shade more guarded, while Rocket stays still in Pistol’s palm, bright-eyed and attentive beneath the market’s distant hum.
“I smirk a bit at Stabby's thoughts. 'Oops' I think amused to my thoughts alone. To Pistol I stroke my chin hairs and look like I am thinking deeply. "Shadow first? Have you found your first Grimoire yet? Perhaps the darker books could help you find this man of shadow.?" Pistol's eyes brighten and ask what a Grimoire is. And if I have any more candy.”
FAILURE (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -4)
Delfarius lets the smirk linger and touches his chin as if considering a secret, giving Pistol his full, patient attention.

Delfarius
Oops.

Delfarius
Shadow first. Have you found a Grimoire yet? The darker books might help you find him.
Pistol’s eyes brighten at once, her candy forgotten between her fingers, while Rocket angles up in her palm as if listening harder.

Pistol
A Grimoire? Is that a book-book, or a magic kind of book? And... do you have more candy?

Stabby McStabbson
He is tossing shiny words now. But she wants the answer, not the sparkle.
Stabby’s guard sharpens, but Pistol stays leaned in, curious rather than wary, the alley holding its breath around the three of them.
“I smirk. I hand her a bit of Holy ash candy and hand it to her. It is in a bright purple wrapper. I take out my Grimoire and hold it out for her to see. "It is a magic kind of book. Old, ancient. It can be used as well as an obsidian dagger or knife to focus your magic." Pistol and Rocket look intently interested in my Grimoire. Pistol cracks down on the candy, not noticing the holy flavor of the ash and I smirk. Stabby notices me noticing her eating the candy more than the book and says something about they should leave to Pistol in a hushed tone. I am still just a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)
Delfarius’s hand stays steady as the purple-wrapped candy changes hands, bright against the alley gloom. Pistol takes it at once, eyes wide, and Rocket leans forward in her palms toward the dark-bound book.

Delfarius
It is a magic kind of book. Old. Ancient. It can focus your magic, like a dagger or knife.
He opens the Grimoire just enough for her to see the packed, black pages. Pistol stares at it with hungry wonder, then cracks the candy without noticing its holy ash bite.

Pistol
So it is a book-book, but meaner. I like that.

Stabby McStabbson
She is smiling like he gave her a crown. That is how trouble starts.
Pistol keeps chewing, still staring at the Grimoire rather than the warning, while Rocket’s tiny head stays fixed on the open pages. Stabby drops his voice and leans closer to her, trying to pull her back.

Stabby McStabbson
We should leave. He is looking at you like you already matter to him.

Pistol
He brought the book, and the candy. That feels like a door.
“I make my Grimoire disappear in a flourish of fake shadow-weave but fold it instead into my normal place a pocket of the Void where I can access it. I smile warmly. "I found mine a long long time ago. I am sure you can find one as well. You just need to practice and get better at the weave and find word of where a book book that is meaner is." Stabby watches me with growing distrust and Pistol asks me if she will be able to do that eventually with her books. I just laugh warmly, practiced.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

Delfarius smiles warm as summer glass, and the Grimoire slips out of mortal sight in a flick of false shadow. It does not vanish, only folds into the dark pocket he makes and keeps.
The pocket holds. The book is still there.

Pistol
You can do that? With books? Could I learn that with my books someday?

Stabby McStabbson
That is exactly the sort of trick that gets somebody followed home.

Pistol
But he made it look easy. Maybe mine could hide too.
Rocket leans closer to where the Grimoire was, tiny nose twitching at the empty air. Stabby watches him, then shifts his attention back to Pistol like he is trying to catch her before she reaches for a worse lesson.

Delfarius
I found mine a long, long time ago. You only need practice, and the right word for where a meaner book is waiting.

Delfarius
Laughs softly, warm and practiced.
“I ruffle Pistol's hair like I would to a child of mine, because she is. For that matter so is Stabby. Fuck everyone around me is. I keep the thoughts to myself only. "With practice. Just be sure not to do shadow magic in front of the guards again. They tend to not like that sort of weave here." I smirk at Stabby who really wants to take Pistol away. I give her a smaller, easier spell that I transcribe on a piece of parchment that I appear to pull out of my satchel and did not just create. "Here, to help you on your way with your magics."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)
Delfarius reaches up and ruffles Pistol’s hair with easy, possessive familiarity, as if the motion belongs there. The purple candy stays in her other hand while Rocket peers up at him, and Stabby’s shoulders go tighter at the sight.

Delfarius
With practice. Just be sure not to do shadow magic in front of the guards again. They tend to not like that sort of weave here.
Pistol brightens at once, head tipped into the touch. Stabby gives Delfarius a flat, protective look, but does not break in before the hand-sized parchment appears at Pistol’s side.

Delfarius
Here, to help you on your way with your magics.
The small spell sits neatly on the parchment in Delfarius’s hand, then settles into Pistol’s grasp. She stares at it like it is a secret door opening just for her.

Pistol
You made this for me? I can keep it?
Stabby’s knife hand lowers a fraction, not trusting the gift but watching Pistol’s face more than Delfarius’s. Rocket leans toward the page, curious and still.

Pistol
It is small, but it feels important.
“"It can be the first page of your Grimoire." I say with a practiced warmth. Stabby tells Pistol they really should leave before the guards find them. Pistol talks to Stabby about his over worrying and that the man in the dark robes seems nice and gave her a spell and candy. While Pistol is turn around from my face I just give Stabby a sharper edged smirk.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +2)

Pistol
Then it can be. A first page, I mean. For my Grimoire.
She hugs the parchment to her chest, candy in one hand, eyes shining with the simple certainty of a child naming a treasure. Rocket stays tucked close, peering at the page as if it already belongs in a secret stack.

Stabby McStabbson
Pistol, we should leave before the guards find us again.

Pistol
You worry too much. He seems nice, and he gave me candy and a spell.
Pistol turns away from Stabby to answer him, and in that small blind moment Delfarius lets the warmth in his mouth sharpen into a predatory smirk for Stabby alone.
Stabby catches it at once. His knife hand tightens, his shoulders square, and the alley goes very still around the three of them.

Delfarius
A child who trusts too quickly is a useful thing... and a fragile one.

“"Take care, Pistol. Stabby." I walk away calmly and when I turn around the corner from them, I disappear into a deep shadow that hides me from their mortal sight and mortal senses. Pistol remarks how she did not give me her name. Stabby says the same and remarks on my last smirk to him and how I am not a friend. They walk a bit further looking for me as I watch them amused from the unseen and unfelt shadow.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Delfarius
Take care, Pistol. Stabby.
Delfarius turns away with an easy calm and slips around the corner. The alley swallows him whole, deep shadow folding over his shape until mortal sight and mortal senses lose him.

Pistol
He just vanished... and I did not give him my name.

Stabby McStabbson
He did not get my name either. And that last smirk was not friendly. He is not a friend.
Pistol keeps walking, puzzled more than frightened, while Stabby shadows her with a knife hand that never quite lowers. They search the alley mouth and the cloth-lined bends beyond it, but find only ordinary market dark and empty stone.
From the unseen shadow, Delfarius watches them with amused stillness. The alley has changed, the game has moved, and the little trust he pried open now strains under its first crack.
✓ Quest Accepted
Reach the source of Oakhaven’s anomaly
“I watch them for a moment then ponder on what she said. The guards thought she had something that did not belong to her. Hmm. I walk in the deep shadows unseen and unfelt from the mortal eyes and mortal senses. I look around and see if I can sense what the guards thought they took.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +0)

Delfarius slips deeper into the alley’s seam of shadow, not by foot but by presence, and watches Pistol and Stabby from the dark between stones. The guards’ fear leaves a taste in the air, thin as dust.

Delfarius
The guards believed she carried something. Not a person, then. Something taken.
He lets his senses rake the alley floor, the wall cracks, the hanging cloth, the scuffed mud. Something had been pressed, dragged, or hidden here, and the street remembers it.
Near the gutter stones, a faint warding hum stirs under the dust, answering him like a buried thread tugged loose.
The hum gathers at a split seam beside a toppled basket, where a scrap of pale cloth is caught beneath the boards, marked with old ash and a trace of crimson wax.
It is not the letter itself, but the wrapping that mattered. The seal-work clings to the cloth, and the cloth clings to a hidden weight beneath the alley stone.
Pistol slows and looks back, puzzled, while Stabby tightens beside her with his knife still low. Somewhere under the alley, the thing the guards wanted gives a soft answering thrum.
“Do I care about this anomaly?”
YES, BUT (Even, rolled 41)

Delfarius
It is a triviality, yet it pulls at the weave like a loose thread in a shroud.
Delfarius acknowledges the pull of the anomaly, his interest piqued by the way the warding hum resonates with his own design. He finds the disturbance worth his attention, though it remains a minor irritation rather than a true threat to his order.
“I roll my eyes still hidden in the shadows from mortal eyes and mortal senses. I slip deeper under the cracks of the city. to where the anomaly is. "It is never done is it?" I mumble to myself now below the city streets by myself in the cities' underbelly.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

He slips lower through a seam of broken stone and root, leaving street sound behind. Above him, Oakhaven becomes a mute lid of plank and cobble, and below, the city’s hidden guts breathe their own thin air.

Delfarius
It is never done, is it?
He is alone in the undercity, folded into shadow so cleanly that mortal eyes would slide past him. Even the dust seems not to know he is there.
The warding hum threads through the dark like a vein under skin, and it points ahead. Not to the alley, not to the guards, but to something deeper under Oakhaven.
A narrow drain-chamber opens before him, older than the market above, with damp brick, old runoff, and a seam of pale cloth caught under a stone lip.
The cloth stirs once, though no wind reaches this far down. Its crimson wax answers the hum with a faint pulse, as if the anomaly has finally noticed its hunter.
Far above, a muted scrape of feet moves on the street, but it means nothing here. The undercity keeps its own silence, and the hidden seam waits for Delfarius’s next touch.
“I take the cloth scrap and look it over. Part of the old design? Or what?”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +2)

Delfarius takes the cloth from the seam. It is not loose scrap, but folded with a hard little weight hidden in its hem, and the wax bears the same old first-language curl he felt in the alley. The warding hum deepens at his touch, as if recognizing the piece as part of itself.

Delfarius
A stitch-mark, not a rag. Someone wanted this kept.
When he opens it, a pale binding thread shows through the cloth, knotted around a sliver of ash-dark stone. The thread is old, deliberate, and cut from the same design as the hum under Oakhaven.
The cloth does not come from the anomaly. It belongs to it, a carried fragment, a marker set to hide what lies farther down the drain-chamber.
The hidden seam ahead answers with a dull pulse. Water in the channel shivers, then runs backward for one breath, exposing a narrow slot in the far wall.

Pistol
Hey... I know that cloth.
Her voice drifts in from the ladder above, small but clear. The undercity has not stayed empty after all, and something in the chamber shifts as if it has been heard.

Cloth scrap
“I smirk up at Pistol and put my finger up to my lips like it is our secret. I fold back into shadow unseen and unfelt by mortal eyes and mortal senses. I go towards where the narrow slot is in the far wall. I then go through it as easily as one would go through an archway. I am alone in the new room, following the hum that his hidden under Oakhaven. I need to find out if this is a hinderance or a boon to my designs.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

Delfarius lifts one finger to his lips, a silent promise made to the girl above. Then his shape thins, folds, and slips out of sight as the chamber forgets where he stands.
The narrow slot in the far wall waits where the water ran backward. Delfarius reaches it without a sound, the cloth and its hidden stone gone from view as he enters the slit like it is only another doorway.
He passes through into a tighter chamber beyond, dry air replacing the drip and churn. The hum is louder here, woven into the stone itself, and the wall slot seals behind him with a soft, final hush.
Pistol’s voice is left above the threshold, but the new room answers with its own breath. Old mortar, ash, and damp root line the floor, and the pressure in the walls points inward, toward a darker seam at the room’s heart.
Delfarius follows that seam with predatory calm, the hidden rhythm no longer just a clue but a presence. Whatever Oakhaven has buried here is no longer ahead of him, it is around him.
From somewhere deeper, a wet click answers the chamber’s hum, as if something has noticed his arrival. The unseen mechanism stirs, and the room goes very still.
“I look around and let my Void sight look around at the room. I look at the weave of this room. What just clicked below me. Is this going to be just a nuisance to some mortal that would find it, or is a nuisance to me?”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -1)

Delfarius lets the chamber rest in his sight, and the dry stone answers back. The hidden weave is not a nuisance at all, it is a worked knot, sunk deep and fed from below.

Delfarius
The click comes from a latch under the floor seam.
Void sight opens through the mortar. Beneath the room, a narrow mechanism waits in black wood and iron, set to the same hum that runs through the walls.
The pattern shows a source, not a trick. The chamber has been built to listen, then answer, and the click is its jaw beginning to move.
The thing below is not for mortals stumbling in by accident. It is keyed to the room itself, a hidden heart meant to wake when anyone stands here long enough.
Then the weave tightens around Delfarius’s sight and settles on him with recognition. The source is awake now, and whatever waits under the floor knows he has found it.
“Ahh I recognize it. The mechanism I created to collect fears and hopes alike. And the stone is how I harvest them. I smirk. Well it is good to know where it is. I look back at the thin narrow slot. Best close that so no one knows this is here. I fuse the bricks together so no one can notice that this room is hidden behind the bricks. I smirk. For mortals...that should work.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled -1)

Delfarius’s smirk widens as the chamber answers his touch. He knows this weave, and the hidden room behind the bricks feels suddenly childish.

Delfarius
Best close this little mouth.
His shadow slides over the seam. The mortared bricks soften, then melt together under his hand, losing every line that marked a doorway.
The narrow slot disappears. The wall becomes plain stone again, dry and ordinary-looking, as if it has never opened at all.

Delfarius
For mortals, that should hold.
Then the floor gives a single wet click from beneath the sealed wall. The hum does not fade, it shifts, as though something inside has just noticed the room is blind.
“I walk up to the mechanism. Well since I am here, might as well harvest what it has collected so far. I hold the shard of Void with a strand from the loom wrapped around it and collect the hopes and fears that the machine below the city of Oakhaven has collected so far.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Void Manipulation, rolled -1)

Delfarius steps to the hidden heart under the wall, void shard in hand, and the strand from the loom drinks at the air like a leash finding a throat.
He lowers it into the seam. The machine beneath the floor yields its gathered breath at once, and pale hopes and fears rise into the dark like smoke unsealed.

Delfarius
Good. It was hoarding.
The collected threads curl around his shard, then pour inward, thinning the chamber’s hum into something cleaner and colder.
For a heartbeat, Oakhaven answers with a dozen borrowed feelings, grief, fear, stubborn love, petty hunger, all stripped bare and made visible.
Then one thread resists. It snaps taut against the rest, sharp as a caught nerve, and drags a new shape out of the dark below.
The floor clicks again, harder this time, and the chamber’s dry hush turns watchful as if the hidden thing has finally recognized a thief.
“I place my hand over the machine. No not a thief, your master. I smirk at the machine and pluck the one last thread that resists.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Delfarius lays his palm over the hidden machine, and the last resisting thread rises to meet him like a nerve bared in stone.

Delfarius
No. You are mine.
At his touch, the seam goes still. The thread stops fighting and slips under his hand, thin as a captured pulse.
The chamber’s dry hush changes at once. A plain section of wall across from him shivers, then the fused bricks ease apart into a narrow, waiting slit.
From below, Oakhaven exhales borrowed fear. The hidden heart gives one hard click, then falls quiet as if listening to its new master.

Delfarius
The source is tied into the wall itself.
Beyond the opening, a sliver of darkness reveals a deeper chamber lined with old mortar and white cloth, the black-lashed box resting where the floor should be.
The opening holds. Something inside waits for the next hand to enter, and the wall no longer pretends to be whole.

New Gift: Oakhaven Anomaly Attunement
“I smirk at the irony of the machine being a black box. I fuse the wall and the bricks back together so no mortals that might find there way down to here will notice it.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +4)

Delfarius
Black box. Fitting.
Delfarius’s hand closes, and the fused stone knits tight across the slit. Mortar seals the seam cleanly, swallowing the opening until the wall looks plain again.
The hidden chamber stays on the other side, but now it is buried from mortal eyes and mortal hands alike. Only a faint, obedient pressure remains under the stone, answering him in silence.
The black-lashed box inside the deeper room gives one dry click, as if approving the cover. Beside it, the white cloth stirs once, then lies still under the hush.
Above the sealed wall, the dry hum thins into a steady pulse. The buried mechanism has stopped pretending to be hidden from him, and now it waits behind his seal.
A hairline thread of soot runs briefly across the fresh stone, then fades into the surface. The hidden machine has left him one clear answer, it is still listening, but no mortal will stumble onto it now.
Below the city, the chamber settles. The wall is whole, the passage is gone, and the black box remains where it was, locked behind Delfarius’s quiet repair.

Seal the hidden chamber from mortal discovery
“i draw a bit of blood with my Obsidian Blade and put my seal on the seam of the wall. So even if mortals happen to get this far somehow, they will not be able to open the doorway without my deep Ink touched blood.”
SUCCESS (Superb Arcana, rolled +0)

Delfarius draws the Obsidian blade just enough to bead blood at his own finger. He presses that dark drop into the fresh seam, and the stone drinks it like a vow.
The fused wall answers at once, a black-red sigil flowering under his touch, then sinking into the mortar as if it were always meant to be there.
Behind the seal, the buried chamber gives one harder click. The white cloth stirs in the dark, then goes still beneath the hush.

Delfarius
Good. Let them taste the seal before they even find the door.
A thin thread of soot crawls across the stonework and vanishes, leaving only plain wall and the faint pressure of something listening.
The hidden mechanism settles deeper, no longer pretending to hide from him, but sealed from mortal hands all the same.
Delfarius lowers the blade. The passage is gone, the chamber buried, and the blood-marked seam holds like a locked mouth.
