The charm-dust on Delfarius’s sleeve brightens again, violet and rhythmic, answering the tower’s own pulse. Then the lie breaks, the dust is not residue, it is a tether, a hunter’s mark locked onto him from House Veyl.

Sir Les Latdrel

Sir Les Latdrel

The key... it was never only for the wards. It is a signal, a true one.

Sir Kaelor jerks the iron key free, and the metal flashes once in the violet light. The pulse in Delfarius’s sleeve falters, then sharpens, as if the key and the charm-dust are answering the same summons.

Delfarius

Delfarius

So that is what they used.

Far above and behind them, the Obsidian Tower groans. Beyond the service crawl, the main gate grinds open under force, and booted feet spill into the tower’s silence.

Sir Les Latdrel

Sir Les Latdrel

They have followed the trail straight here. To the inn, if you leave now... or to us, if you stay.

The violet glow on Delfarius’s sleeve steadies into a beacon, bright enough to betray the dark. Somewhere in the tower’s depths, Gregory Giffsyn is dragged onward, while the hunters close from the gate.

Sir Les Latdrel

Sir Les Latdrel

I left her hidden, warded, and alive. The key answered the mark, and I came because the trail led here.

Kaelor lifts the iron key as if it burns his fingers. The violet tether on Delfarius’s sleeve flares in answer, bright enough to stain the obsidian wall.

Sir Les Latdrel

Sir Les Latdrel

The hunters are inside now. If we do nothing, they follow that beacon straight to us, or to Veyra.

Far off, steel boots ring on stone, deeper in the tower. The mark keeps glowing, steady as a heartbeat, and the dark corridor waits for Delfarius’s next move.

"I can handle a few guards," I gather the charm dust off my sleeves with a vague amusement. "Go protect Veyra, leave the key if you must. I am taking care of things of my own affairs, my own matters. I trusted the House Veyl's downfall to the rest of you..."

Kaelor lowers the iron key into Delfarius's hand, then turns on his heel toward the stair, already moving for the hidden ward and the girl beyond it.

Below, the intruders' boots scrape into the tower's throat. The pulse of the obsidian walls steadies around Delfarius, waiting for blood or silence.

The glow tightens, shrinks, and crawls from his sleeve into the key’s grooves. For a breath the mark on his arm goes blank, then its last trace thins to nothing at all.

The stair beyond Kaelor darkens as his retreat swallows him, while the iron key in Delfarius’s hand keeps a faint, trapped glimmer. Somewhere deeper in the stone, the intruders slam against a door that no longer sings for them.

A hard scrape rises from the lower corridor, followed by Gregory Giffsyn’s muffled fury echoing through the tower’s throat. The Obsidian Tower listens in silence, its pulse waiting on Delfarius’s next move.

Let them come to an empty dark.

He presses void into the mouth of the hole, shaping false stone over true depth. The surface takes the look of old rock, but it will betray any weight that trusts it.

Then he folds himself into a pocket of shadow, unseen and unfelt, while the key is placed beyond the lip like bait in a trap.

The charm dust on the metal flickers once, and the key drinks in the last of it. Beneath the illusion, the darkness thickens, waiting.

From below, bootsteps strike the corridor and pause. One intruder stops hard at the edge of the hall, as if the tower has gone suddenly mute.

Gregory Giffsyn

...

The tower pulse deepens, brightens, then settles again, as if it recognizes the sacrifice and approves.

Beyond the chamber, the corridor answers with hurried boots. Someone is close now, and the next question is whether they open the door or flee it.

I step of his tongue on the ground and cause it to turn to ash under my boot. I chuckle as I lick Gregory's blood off of my fingers and fling the door open so the rest of his knights can see what I did to him. Lets see if they come to rescue him or flee like cowards. Either way, they are in my tower. They all are as good as dead one way or the other.

Delfarius sets his heel on the severed tongue, and it crumbles to gray ash under his boot.

The corridor beyond spills into view, with armored hunters freezing mid-step at the sight of Gregory chained and ruined.

Gregory Giffsyn

...

The tower’s pulse thuds once, hard as a heartbeat, and fresh bootsteps scrape to a halt outside the threshold.

One hunter recoils, another raises a blade, and the open door leaves Delfarius standing between them and their fallen leader.

I take one more slow delbrete lick of Gregory's blood on my hand then throw my head back and laugh at them all. My tower glows a dark red, mimicking the color of spilt blood as I take a slow measured step towards Gregory, my scourge with jagged pieces of iron braided in it's tails. I reach out with my hand and cause Gregory's armor to fall off leaving the knight exposed in nothing but his undershorts. "Look they came to watch me break you, pet. His outstretched hand closes on the knight's warded steel, and the armor gives with a shrill, ugly rattle.

Plate peels away in pieces, clattering to the ash, until Gregory stands stripped to his undershorts and ruin.

Delfarius snaps the scourge. Nine braided tails crack through the chamber, each metal nail in them flashing red in the tower light.

Gregory goes rigid in the chains, humiliated fury burning through the shock. One hunter backs into the doorway, blade wavering.

Shadow folds around Delfarius like a cloaked doorway, and the torture chamber falls away. He slips through the tower’s black seams and arrives beyond the sealed depths, hidden where the light cannot catch him.

He comes out in the outer breach, behind the new intruders, while the tower’s pulse thuds through the stone like a second heartbeat.

Ahead, the wall on the chamber side still shudders under the trapped men’s impacts, but now fresh blows hammer from the gate corridor too.

The hunters are no longer hunting. They are here, at his tower’s throat, with steel raised and panic on their breath.

Delfarius remains only a slice of perfect dark, unseen by mortal eyes, as the passage opens before him and the fight spills outward.

One of the intruders recoils, staring into the gloom where Delfarius now stands, while another lifts a weapon toward the breach.

The tower answers with a deeper throb, and the sealed wall groans as if deciding which side of the stone will break first.
