The tunnel gives way to open air and mountain hush. Crisp wind slips down from the Bluee peaks, carrying the far, amber glow of Tarmonia below. For a rare moment, nothing chases them.
Sir Kaelor sits on a flat stone and works a cloth over his blade, methodical and careful. Tharlen paces the edge of the path, then slows, listening to the quiet as if it might answer him.

Sir Kaelor
At least my testimony still lives. That is something.

Tharlen
I had almost forgotten what a proper silence feels like. Less theatrical than the arena, I admit.
Delfarius stands apart from them both, the dark weight of his power briefly at odds with the small, stubborn resolve in mortal hands. Repine lingers close, a shadow with bright blue eyes, watching the slope and then settling.

Sir Kaelor
If you meant to leave me to die, you chose an inconvenient road for it.

Tharlen
He did not. Try to look grateful, Kaelor. It suits you better than blood.
Kaelor huffs a tired laugh and lets the blade rest across his knees. The three of them stand in the mountain air, the night over Tarmonia glittering below, and for once the next words do not have to be about war.
“I rest my hand on Sir Kaelor and restore his health to full with my power and look down over the valley to the city below in silence afterwards. I don't need to justify my actions to either of them. Repine looks up to me knowing how I feel.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Combat Magic, rolled +1)

Delfarius lays a hand on Sir Kaelor's shoulder. Dark power threads through the knight's wounds, and the slackness in his posture vanishes as strength returns to him.

Sir Kaelor
It feels like waking from a long fever. I can stand on my own again.
Kaelor straightens, testing his arm, then the blade in his lap. The cloth falls still in his fingers as the last pain leaves his face.

Tharlen
Well. That is a sight worth keeping. You make mercy look almost dangerous.

Sir Kaelor
I will take dangerous over dead.
Repine lifts his shadowed head and looks to Delfarius, bright eyes steady with wordless loyalty.

Delfarius
The valley below glows cold and gold, and the mountains keep their silence.
Tarmonia lies spread beneath them like embers under glass, distant and unworried. For a breath, no one speaks, and the night simply holds them.
“I walk closer to the edge and narrow my sight to find this oath breaking lord amongst the mortals down below, what is his name?”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +1)

Delfarius steps to the lip of the path and lets his gaze fall over Tarmonia. The city’s lights sharpen in his sight, each district separating into roofs, walls, and watchfires.

Delfarius
The lord’s hold sits above the richer quarter, behind taller walls than the rest.
Far below, one estate draws his eye, its banners hanging too neatly over a gate guarded harder than the streets around it. The shape of its defenses marks it as the house that bought the arena’s silence.

Tharlen
You found him, then. House Veyl keeps its guilty stone in the upper ward.

Sir Kaelor
House Veyl. I knew the crest. I did not know the name behind the rot.
Kaelor’s grip tightens on the iron key, and the metal catches a sliver of moonlight. Repine remains still at Delfarius’s heel, eyes fixed on the city like a hunter waiting for a scent to break.

Tharlen
Now that we know the name, do you want the road down, or the faster ruin?

Confront House Veyl
“"Well Tharlen, tell your plan then I will tell you how much of a shit plan it is." I smirk.”
SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled -1)

Delfarius
Then speak, Tharlen. Tell me your plan, and I will tell you how bad it is.
Delfarius keeps that faint smirk, all steel and amusement, as the mountain wind tugs at his cloak. Below them, Tarmonia glitters like a quiet lie.

Tharlen
Gladly. House Veyl needs to bleed in public, not just lose coin or men in secret. I want their banners torn down where every witness can name the shame.

Sir Kaelor
So that is the shape of it. Not rescue, then reckoning. Better than silence.

Tharlen
The key in your hand opens more than a pen. Their servants moved through hidden doors beneath the upper ward. I can find one. You bring the fear.
Kaelor looks from the key to Tharlen’s diamond blade, then back to Delfarius, the tension in his shoulders easing into wary agreement.

Sir Kaelor
If House Veyl is named before witnesses, my testimony stops being a whisper. I will stand for that.
Tharlen gives a small, satisfied nod, and the three of them share a brief, hard silence before the road downward waits for an answer.
“I smirk. Yes bleeding in public is nice, but suffering in the dark is just as much fun. "Lord Veyl has a daughter, yes? She is seeing men in private without her father's knowledge? Yes?" My smirk widens. I know a lot more about this then they do.”
SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +3)

Delfarius
Lord Veyl has a daughter, yes? She meets men in private, away from her father’s eye, yes?
Delfarius’s smirk sharpens as the wind slides past the ledge. The name hangs between them like a hooked thread.

Tharlen
Yes. And you did not learn that from tavern rumor.

Sir Kaelor
That is leverage. Dangerous, but real.
Kaelor’s grip loosens on the iron key, while Tharlen tilts his diamond blade in a slow, considering arc.

Tharlen
If you know the daughter’s habits, then you know a door the house keeps shut. Speak plainly, Delfarius.

Delfarius
The daughter is the crack in the wall.
Below them, the upper ward of Tarmonia gleams under moonlight, and one bannered roof now feels much less distant.

Sir Kaelor
Then we do not strike the gate like fools. We go where truth can be seen, and where witnesses can be gathered.
“I lean in close to Tharlen and grin. "And you thought I was just the blade, silly mortal."”
SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled +1)
Delfarius leans in close enough for Tharlen to catch the moonlight in his eyes, and the grin on his mouth turns sharp as a drawn hook.

Delfarius
And you thought I was just the blade, silly mortal.
The words land cleanly. Tharlen stills, his diamond blade pausing mid-angle as his gaze flicks over Delfarius with newly measured respect.

Tharlen
Silly mortal, is it? Then I have been underestimating the storm.

Sir Kaelor
Good. Better he fears the truth than forget it.
Kaelor’s iron key turns once in his fist, not as a threat now, but as a token held ready. The ridge stays quiet, and Tarmonia gleams below like a closed eye.

Tharlen
Then tell me, Delfarius, do you prefer your truths whispered through silk, or carved into a lord’s doorway for the whole house to read?
“I gesture with my hand like it is plain for all to see. "Why not both. Let them face the public shame after the secret one. We could even get coin from them if you wish. I could get the daughter then we could make them pay for her release. Unless that offends either of you."”
SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled -2)

Delfarius
Why not both. Let them take the shame in public after we strip the lie bare in secret. And if coin helps, we can take that too. I can get the daughter, then make them pay for her release, unless that troubles either of you.
Delfarius lifts one hand, palm out toward the dark road and the sleeping city below, as if the whole scheme were simple enough to fit in the air between them.

Tharlen
That is grotesquely practical. I approve.
Tharlen’s mouth curves, but his eyes stay sharp. The diamond blade lowers a fraction, no longer a warning, more a measure taken of the man speaking.

Sir Kaelor
If the girl is a hostage, we free her first. No family should be carved into a ledger like loot.
Kaelor’s iron key catches the moonlight as his grip tightens. He does not sound offended, only hard, and the honesty of it settles cleanly between them.

Tharlen
Then we name the house’s cruelty aloud, and we charge them for the privilege of hearing it.
Tharlen steps closer, shoulders angling in beside Delfarius and Kaelor, while the three men form a tighter knot against the mountain dark. The city below waits, and the first bargain of their conspiracy now has shape.
“"But we could keep the girl when the rest of the house falls, sway her to see the errors of her family's ways....then." I laugh manically. "Well blood in the streets...banners torn witnesses to name the shame of the House Veyl." I gesture lazily.”
SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled +1)

Delfarius
But we could keep the girl when the rest of the house falls, sway her to see the errors of her family's ways... then.

Delfarius
Well, blood in the streets... banners torn, witnesses to name the shame of the House Veyl.
Delfarius lets the last words spill with a lazy, manic laugh and a loose gesture toward the dark road. The idea hangs there, ugly and bright, between moonlit steel and stone.

Tharlen
That is a splendid sort of cruelty. Useful, too.

Sir Kaelor
If she is kept, she is not a prize. She is a witness, or she is free.
Kaelor does not flinch from the ugliness of the plan, he only sharpens it. His iron key glints as he lifts his chin, and the tight knot of the three of them feels less like a bargain now, more like a vow.

Tharlen
Then we give the house a stage, and let them bleed their own name in public.
