Perfect darkness cloaks Delfarius in the outer courtyard of the Obsidian Tower. Below, three knights pick through shattered stone and broken wards, searching for Gregory and the hunters.

Source-less laughter spills through the courtyard, cold and mocking. The knights freeze, then turn in a tight circle, blades rising toward empty air.

The Tall Knight

The Tall Knight

Something is inside the tower with us.

One knight crouches and lifts Gregory's former holy sword from the rubble. Its bright metal is gone, replaced by corroded ruin and slow-black void ichor that drips onto the flagstones.

The Tall Knight

The Tall Knight

By the Light... that blade is tainted.

The Short Knight

The Short Knight

Form up. Do not let the dark take us one by one.

They close ranks, fear tightening their shoulders as the tower seems to lean around Delfarius's hidden presence. The corrupted sword in their hands becomes proof that Gregory's fall is real, and that the tower has already begun turning their mission into a feeding ground.

✓ Quest Accepted

Drive the knights into panic

I shift into the shadows behind the men still unseen by their mortal eyes and mortal senses. The tall one is horrified. I can work with that. I cause the void on Gregory's blade to jump out at him like a hungry beast. I also call Repine and have him wait with me on the opposite side of the men. Repine is hidden like I am, waiting. Hunting

Delfarius slips through the black gap behind them, swallowed by the tower's shadow. On the far side, Repine gathers from the dark like spilled ink given teeth, silent and patient.

The corrupted blade twitches in the Tall Knight's grip. Void ichor crawls up the metal, then snaps free in a hungry lash, rearing toward his face like a beast from a grave.

The Tall Knight

The Tall Knight

No, no, back!

He jerks away and stumbles into the Short Knight's shoulder. The Third Knight flinches, shield up, but the shadow behind them offers no relief, only more darkness.

Repine's blue eyes open in the black opposite them, a second unseen threat waiting with Delfarius. The knights are boxed in between predator and hunger, with Gregory's ruined sword still pulsing like a wound.

The Short Knight

The Short Knight

Move, now! We are surrounded!

Their formation breaks at once. Blades shake, breath turns ragged, and the tower's deep pulse seems to answer with a cruel, steady beat.

I Void on the sword forms into a shadowy human shape and holds the sword like his weapon. He opens his eyes and they glow a bright blue and the shadowy form grins with malice. The void on Gregory's blade swells, then gathers itself into a human shape of smoke and hunger. It stands where the sword points, one hand wrapped around the hilt like it was always meant to wield it.

Bright blue eyes ignite in the shadow-face. The thing grins with cruel delight, and the corrupted metal stops writhing as if it has found a master.

The Tall Knight freezes. His grip loosens, then clenches again as fear wins over discipline.

The Tall Knight

The Tall Knight

By the light... what is that?

The Short Knight stumbles back a step, and the Third Knight lifts his shield higher, searching the dark for the source of the mockery. Neither finds Delfarius.

The Third Knight

The Third Knight

It is not a beast. It is sorcery. Fall back!

Repine remains low in the broken stone, eyes burning blue in the gloom, while the shadow-shaped wielder tilts the sword toward the knights like a verdict.

The tower pulse matches the beat in the dark, and the knights hear only the thing standing between them and escape.

The Short Knight shoves toward the wall instead of the exit, panic cracking his stance, while the Third Knight falters and turns his shield toward the wrong threat.

Well, hello, gentlemen. So kind of you to come here to die.

Repine slips wide around the Short Knight, low and circling, his glowing eyes fixed on the man’s throat. The Short Knight jerks back with a choking gasp, sword wavering.

The void-made swordsman leaves the corrupted blade’s side and advances on the Tall Knight with deliberate steps, as if the fight is already decided. The tower’s pulse thuds louder in the black stone.

The Tall Knight

The Tall Knight

Fall back, fall back, the floor is cursed!

The Short Knight

Repine lunges in the same heartbeat, shadows under his paws flaring as he drives the Short Knight toward the needles. Across the yard, the void-made swordsman forces the Tall Knight to retreat into a tighter line of terror.

One needle slices the Third Knight’s banner free and pins it to the stone, exposing a wax seal stamped with House Veyl. The knights see it, and their mission turns to panic.

The Short Knight

The Short Knight

The Third Knight’s back touches the nearest obsidian spear. The spike does not pierce him yet, but it bites through his armor seam and draws a sharp cry, enough to crack his last resolve.

He throws both hands up, dropping his sword. The blade strikes the shifting stone and spins toward Delfarius, while the banner lies face-up, sealing his fear with House Veyl’s mark.

Across the courtyard, the other two knights recoil in horror as they see the Third Knight submit. The tower’s pulse thuds once, heavy as a heartbeat, and all three stare at Delfarius as if he has already named the next victim.

"Too late" I cause the obsidian spikes behind the third knight to grow and pierce through his armor and impale him on the spike of obsidian. I laugh as his life blood trickles down the spike of obsidian and I look to the short knight and the tall knight. Repine jumps and bites down on the short knight's leg.

The Tall Knight backpedals, shield half-raised but already meaningless. Above the spike, the Third Knight hangs limp, while the banner’s torn seal flutters near Delfarius’s hand like a sentence being signed.

Repine’s grip tightens once more, and the Short Knight chokes on a fresh cry. The courtyard holds on that blade-point hush, with the new spear aimed and the next choice waiting in the dark.

I sigh slow and deliberately and I level the sharped stick with the banner of House Veyl on it towards the short knight. My malicious grin does not match the dethatched and mundane words I speak as I impale the short knight on the staff with the banner. "The chores are never finished." The Tall Knight

The Tall Knight

That banner was their signal to us. It means the house still has eyes on this courtyard, even now.

Delfarius

Run. It only makes the dark hungrier.

Delfarius lifts both hands, and the drifting souls spiral above his palms in a pale, mournful veil. The swarm thickens as he advances toward the abandoned siege toys.

The nearest souls slide into his grasp, leaving the men hollow-eyed and stumbling blind for the ridge path.

Repine

The hunt is taking their fear.

Claim the siege crew's remaining souls

I look wordless down at Repine sensing his want to hunt and let him chase after the fleeing men. I walk up to the army's field commander with the souls of his fallen men hovering above me. I let him watch as I absorb them with a growing malicious grin on my face.

Delfarius lets Repine loose without a word. The shadow hound snaps into the fleeing dark, a blur of teeth and inky hunger between the siege frames.

Then Delfarius turns toward the commander. Grey wisps drift above him in a slow crown, trembling as if they know their owner no longer has the right to keep them.

The field commander freezes, staring past his own scattered crew, watching the souls gather over Delfarius's hands.

Hadrun

Hadrun

No... keep back from them.

Delfarius's grin widens as he draws the wisps in. The nearest grey lights slip into him one by one, and the commander staggers as if each breath is being judged.

Hadrun

Hadrun

Those are mine.

Repine's howl cuts after the runners, while Delfarius stands beneath the dead beam and feeds on the stolen souls in full view. The commander grips his weapon tighter, but the fear on his face is already bigger than his courage.

I laugh at the commander in his face. "No they are mine." I answer his thoughts.

No. They are mine.

The words land like a lash. The commander flinches, and the souls above Delfarius shiver in tighter orbit, as if they recognize a master more than a thief.

Hadrun

Hadrun

By the saints... he hears me think.

Repine ghosts past the fleeing line, teeth flashing in the dark, while the commander’s grip slips from anger into raw disbelief.

Hadrun

Hadrun

What are you?

The tower answers before Delfarius does. Its pulse beats through the courtyard stones, a low rhythm under the commander’s boots and a faint echo under Delfarius’s heart.

Hadrun

Hadrun

Those men swore service to a righteous cause... and this place turns every oath to ash.

His sword lowers another fraction. Fear remains, but curiosity takes its place beside it, fragile and unwilling.

Hadrun

Hadrun

If you take their souls, tell me this... was it ever justice here?

My grin grows more malicious as I lean down to regard this little mortal asking questions. How amusing. "I do hear your thoughts. And I find your resolve in the face of me amusing." I laugh and smirk. The souls of more of his men race to me swirling with the other gathered souls above me, waiting for me to claim them all. "What was your little question, what am I? I am a God, fool." I lean in closer and let my icy presence and my true power of me cower him.

SUCCESS (Legendary Intimidation, rolled +0)

Delfarius leans in, and the soul-wisps above him tighten into a brighter ring.

Delfarius

Delfarius

I hear your thoughts, and I find your resolve amusing.

His laugh cuts across the courtyard as the tower’s pulse thuds through stone and chest alike.

Delfarius

Delfarius

What am I? I am a god, fool.

The Field Commander’s sword dips. His doubt deepens, not into surrender, but into awe edged with fear.

Hadrun

Hadrun

A god... no. But something old enough to make men’s oaths mean nothing.

Repine circles wider, silent as smoke, while more of the fleeing crew’s souls stream upward into the orbit above Delfarius.

Hadrun

Hadrun

Then tell me this, dark one. If justice exists here, why does it wear your face?

I get closer to this commander my grin growing and the moonlight reflecting in my icy blue eyes. "You are correct, I am older than the gods. I made them, or rather let them gather strength so I can dismantle them when the time is ripe. The more power they have, the greater my power grows." I lean in dangerously close to his face so close I could lick his cheek. "They call me the Unmaker."

You are right. I am older than the gods. I made them, or let them rise until I can break them when the time is ripe. The more power they gather, the more mine swells. They call me the Unmaker.

Delfarius closes the distance, moonlight whitening the edge of his grin as the soul-wisps tighten like a crown above him.

The Field Commander goes still. His sword lowers to his thigh, not in surrender, but in stunned reckoning.

Hadrun

Hadrun

Unmaker... if that is true, then every oath I have ever sworn has stood inside a lie.

Repine slows at Delfarius’s flank, head low, eyes fixed on the commander as if waiting for the first tremor of fear.

Hadrun

Hadrun

Then what am I to call justice, if not the thing that stands against you?

Above them, the soul-wisps pulse in time with the tower, brightening at Delfarius’s heartbeat while the commander’s hand tightens around a sword he no longer seems certain to trust.
