Falling Into the City

Past Delfarius vanishes back through the portal with one last, knowing look, and the seam seals behind him in a soft snap of red light. The balcony wind rushes cold and bright over the Obsidian Tower, carrying the scent of rain, cloud, and far-off mortal fields.

Delfarius walks to the rail and looks down at the lands below, tiny and busy beneath the tower’s shadow. He laughs low at the absurd ease of it, the brief luxury of walking among mortals as if he belongs to them.

Delfarius

Delfarius

It is almost fun, pretending.

He turns from the edge, then steps off the tower without hesitation. The fall eats the wind, cloud peels past him, and the world rushes up in a blur of green roofs, roads, and trees.

Delfarius lands in the outskirts of a new city with a light, soundless impact, dust blooming around his boots. Mortals nearby see only a dark-haired traveler in plain shape, smirking as he starts forward beneath open sky.

Ahead, the road widens toward market smoke and stone walls, while birds wheel over distant towers. Somewhere beyond the first line of houses, life stirs with the quiet promise of new names, new secrets, and perhaps a few that will not be missed.

✓ Quest Accepted

Draw a worthy mortal into my orbit

I hum a small tune from the future and walk further into the city. Ahead I see a gate that has guards stopping those who enter. I smirk. I am still just a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses.

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +2)

Falling Into the City
Black-Cloaked Courier
Black-Cloaked Courier

Delfarius hums a small, impossible tune and keeps walking, the sound light as dust over stone. Mortals ahead glance up, see only a smirking traveler, and look away again.

The road narrows into the city approach, where a gate rises in pale timber and iron. Guards stand across the entry, stopping carts and pedestrians in a measured line.

Delfarius

Delfarius

The gate keeps honest faces waiting.

Delfarius’s pace never breaks. His tune slips past the guards’ ears as he reaches the line, all mortal ease and easy posture.

One guard lifts a hand, then lowers it at the sight of him, already deciding this traveler is unremarkable. The barrier opens for his step without a question.

Inside the walls, market noise and chimney smoke gather around him at once. Beyond the first street, a black-cloaked courier stands under an awning with a sealed letter in hand, watching the flow of people.

Black-Cloaked Courier

Black-Cloaked Courier

There. That one.

The courier’s stillness catches the edge of Delfarius’s attention just as the guards behind him turn back to their work, none the wiser. The city opens wider ahead, and the stranger seems to be waiting for someone to notice him.

Discover the courier's purpose in the city

Scene Quest Removed

Draw a worthy mortal into my orbit

I walk past the courier and go to a market stall offering fruits and purchase something. I nibble on it as I narrow my eyes at the courier. He was in Oakhaven, and this is not Oakhaven. I look at the weave of this mortal and determine what his purpose is. I am still just a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses.

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -1)

Delfarius slips past the courier without breaking stride, letting the awning and crowd swallow the man behind him. A fruit stall waits ahead, bright with apples, pears, and cut citrus.

He takes a pear from the stall, drops coin into the keeper’s palm, and turns as if merely tasting the day. The first bite is sweet and cold.

His weave is threaded with watchfulness, not trade.

Delfarius narrows his eyes over the fruit and reads deeper. The courier’s purpose is not the letter, but the watching.

Black-Cloaked Courier

Black-Cloaked Courier

You see too much for a traveler.

The courier does not move from under the awning, yet the sealed letter tilts in his hand as if it weighs more than wax and paper. Nearby shoppers pass on, blind to the tension pooling between them.

Delfarius tastes the pear again, mortal to every eye in the street, while the courier’s attention fixes on him like a hook. Whatever the letter carries, the man carrying it has come to measure the Unmaker’s shadow.

Discover the courier's purpose in the city

"I was just wondering what kind of man wears a heavy cloak and hood in the middle of the summer heat." I say taking a lazy bite of the pear, the juices falling from my lips down my chin. So perfectly mortal like. I am just a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses. I raise an eyebrow at the person who must be sweating to death under the heavy clothing.

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Delfarius lets the pear rest between his fingers, then gives the courier a lazy, cutting look over the fruit’s sheen. The street keeps flowing around them, but the awning feels smaller now.

Delfarius

Delfarius

What kind of man wears a heavy cloak and hood in summer heat?

His bite is slow and careless, juice tracing a bright line down his chin. The question lands with perfect mortal ease, like idle curiosity from a harmless traveler.

Black-Cloaked Courier

Black-Cloaked Courier

One who wants to be measured, or one who is used to being hunted.

The courier’s head tilts. The sealed letter stays low, but his gaze shifts from Delfarius’s face to the shadow under his sleeves, as if he is weighing something invisible.

Black-Cloaked Courier

Black-Cloaked Courier

He is too calm. Too cleanly ordinary. That is the danger.

Black-Cloaked Courier

Black-Cloaked Courier

I wear it because the city has eyes, and some eyes prefer not to be remembered.

A nearby child darts past with a basket of rolls, and the moment almost looks domestic. Then the courier’s attention narrows again, intent and measuring, while Delfarius’s shadow lies neat at his feet.

✓ Quest Accepted

Draw the courier into conversation

I look over to the child that darted past and let a laugh slip out. Like a normal mortal man would. I walk a few steps closer to the courier afterwards and take another lazy bite and regard the person under the heavy cloak and hood. "And does that pick up line work for you often, I mean the whole...'I am searching for someone the city has eyes and prefer to be remembered.' I am just curious." I laugh brightly and mocking at the person under the heavy cloak. I am just a normal mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses. And so is my shadow that follows me like a normal mortal shadow would.

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Delfarius’s laugh slips out warm and easy, a mortal sound with just enough edge to sting. He steps closer through the market light, unhurried, and takes another careless bite from the pear.

Delfarius

Delfarius

And does that line work for you often? The whole, I am searching for someone and the city has eyes. I am curious.

The courier’s mouth twitches under the hood. He does not retreat, but his stance loosens a fraction, like a man deciding whether to answer or measure first.

Black-Cloaked Courier

Black-Cloaked Courier

Often enough to keep me alive. Rarely enough to keep me liked.

He shifts the sealed letter in one gloved hand, then glances toward the child now vanishing into the street, as if checking who heard what.

Black-Cloaked Courier

Black-Cloaked Courier

You laugh like a man who has never needed to hide. That usually means you have hidden better than the rest of us.

Delfarius keeps smiling, bright and mocking, while his shadow stays neat at his feet, ordinary enough for mortal eyes. The courier studies that shadow, then looks back up with cautious interest instead of alarm.

Black-Cloaked Courier

Black-Cloaked Courier

If you want the truth, traveler, I am waiting on someone who may not arrive openly. And you are making me wonder if he already has.

Draw the courier into conversation

"Okay. So you are just the city's wierdo then." I laugh and walk away taking a bit of the pear again. I am a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses. A very skilled and proficient man who took the letter from the courier that did not notice it because while I talked to him my 'normal shadow' took it from their pocket before they noticed. I hum to myself and think to my thoughts alone 'I wonder if they are remarkable enough to keep...I guess we will never know since they are going to stand there until later in the afternoon until they realize they lost the letter they were meant to deliver to me.' I hum a popular tune as I walk further away towards a busy inn/tavern.

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

Delfarius lets the courier’s warning hang for half a breath, then turns away with the easy insolence of a man who has already taken what he wanted. His teeth flash over the pear as he strolls off toward the inn lights, humming to himself.

The courier stays under the awning, still and watchful, until his gloved hand dips to his side. Only then does he stiffen, fingers searching the wrong pocket.

Black-Cloaked Courier

Black-Cloaked Courier

The letter is gone.

He does not call out. He only turns his hood a fraction toward Delfarius’s retreating back, the sealed wax now absent from his palm.

Delfarius

Delfarius

He is not remarkable enough to keep.

Delfarius’s tune carries on, light and careless, as the first street opens toward the busy inn. Behind him, the courier remains frozen in the market noise, forced to decide whether to pursue the missing message or the man who took it.

✓ Quest Accepted

Identify the remarkable individual at the inn

I go into the Inn/tavern and sit at the crowded bar in front. I get the bartender's attention and order a coffee. I wait for my cup and scan the room like a mortal man on a mission. I appear like a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses. I am also hidden enough in plain sight incase anyone was following me.

The Bartender

Delfarius slips into the inn and claims the end stool at the crowded bar, shoulder to shoulder with strangers of horn, fur, fin, and hood. Tankards knock, dice rattle, and a dozen conversations keep moving around him as if he is only another tired traveler.

He lifts a hand for the bartender, sets down coin, and asks for coffee in the plain, mortal tone of a man with somewhere to be. The server only nods, already turning to the pot, while a slice of pear sweetness fades from his fingers.

The Bartender

The Bartender

Coffee, then. You want it bitter enough to wake the dead, or just enough to make a long day bearable?

Delfarius settles in, hidden in the press of elbows and cloaks, and lets his eyes move over the room. The bar is packed tight, yet no one lingers on him for long, just another face among many.

At one table, a pair of hunters argue over a map. Near the hearth, a blue-skinned woman laughs into her cup, and farther back a small cloaked figure keeps one hand over a satchel like it holds a secret worth killing for.

The Bartender

The Bartender

You look like a man counting exits. Either you are wise, or you have been followed.

The question lands softly while the bartender fills the cup, and a thin curl of steam rises between them. Delfarius waits at the crowded bar, coffee promised, the room still carrying on around him.

"i think there was a heavy cloaked wierdo at the gate that was trying to make an odd pass at me. Oh and coffee strong enough to raise the dead. No sugar, and I brought my own...creamer." I smirk. "Anything interesting to tell barkeep? Oh and where the hell have I found myself. I have been dusty on the roads for so long without a map and I just saw the walls and called it a welcomed sight before figuring out where my feet had taken me to." I still appear like a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses.

Clernatcy, then. First street inside the walls. And the cloaked one, yes, he has the look of trouble that pays in advance.

The cup comes off the pot in a dark pour, and the bartender slides it over with a knowing huff. Steam curls between them while the room keeps pretending not to listen.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Anything interesting to tell barkeep? Oh and where the hell have I found myself. I have been dusty on the roads for so long without a map and I just saw the walls and called it a welcomed sight before figuring out where my feet had taken me to.

You have found the Lantern Hush, and if you mean interesting, the girl with the strange shadow is the talk of the house. She was here earlier, and the light did not sit right around her.

At the mention of the girl, the bar’s noise thins for a breath. A few heads turn, then turn away again, but the bartender keeps his eyes on Delfarius, curious and careful.

The coffee settles beside Delfarius’s hand, bitter and hot. Outside, the city gate noise fades into a muffled hum, and the inn has quietly become the center of the next problem.

I reach into my pouch with the ashes of the holy followers of the light and sprinkle some in my coffee and stir it in. "Hmm. A girl with pigtails with an odd colored goblin?" I ask the bartender as I sip on my coffee. Still looking like a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses.

Delfarius dips his spoon through the coffee and lets the holy ash vanish into the dark surface. The drink takes it without protest, going denser, sharper, almost metallic.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Hmm. A girl with pigtails, with an odd-colored goblin?

The Bartender

The Bartender

Pigtails, yes. The goblin too, if you mean the little knife-brat with her. They were in here before dusk, and she was asking after a man no one remembered clearly.

He leans one forearm on the bar, studying Delfarius over the steam. At the far table, a blue-skinned woman pauses mid-laugh and glances over, then looks away as if she has heard a name in the wrong season.

The Bartender

The Bartender

Strange thing about her, the light bent wrong around the girl. Not dangerous, exactly. Just... unstable. Like a spell trying to decide what shape to keep.

The coffee carries the ash cleanly, and a faint pale film gathers once at the rim before sinking. The bartender notices, but says nothing, only narrows his eyes with fresh curiosity.

The Bartender

The Bartender

If you're hunting the girl, you have better timing than most. She left with the goblin toward the first lane by the fish stairs. And if she is the one I think she is, she may not stay hidden once spoken to.

I look at the man with an amused expression and sip on my coffee. "Hmm, that sounds like more trouble than it is worth."

Delfarius sips once, amused, and the bartender’s mouth twists into a knowing half-smile. "Aye, it usually is. Trouble likes to pretend it’s a story until it bites."

The Bartender

The Bartender

He scratches his beard, eyes still on Delfarius. "Those two brought more than gossip with them, too. The girl watched the room like it had already lied to her, and the goblin kept the exits counted."

The inn settles back into its murmur, but the bartender stays leaned in, warm with curiosity and careful not to push. Outside, the first lane waits beyond the door, ordinary and watching.
