Five years settle like ash over the Scar of Contradiction. Delfarius stands high on the Obsidian Tower balcony, the new city fanning out below in stone, scaffold, and prayer smoke.

The Cathedral of the Unmaker hums at the city’s heart. Every bowed head below seems to feed the tower, and every fearful whisper finds its way up to him.

Lyss lingers at his side, gaunt now, all sharp lines and quiet restraint, kept close enough to be useful and distant enough to remember her place.

Far below, a fresh procession approaches the gates. Pilgrims in ash-gray robes slow when they see the tower, then gather their courage and keep coming.

A faint shift runs through the Obsidian Tower wall behind him, a soft iron click from the captive names beneath the stone, as if the place is waiting to see which of the newcomers will be claimed next.

Delfarius smirks at the sight. The faithful are here again, and the tower is ready to remember them.

✓ Quest Accepted

Break the pilgrims into total submission

I wave a hand, and send Lyss to the torture chambers. She is chained to the wall and restrained and can not break free until I have need of her.

Lyss

Delfarius lifts one hand, and the air tightens around Lyss. The balcony’s hush answers with a hard, iron note.

Lyss’s knees buckle before she can reach for balance. The Void collar at her throat flashes once, then the tower takes her weight.

A red seam opens in the wall beside the balcony, thin as a wound. The lower stone throat below gives one blunt click, as if it approves the transfer.

Lyss is drawn through the seam shoulder-first, dragged out of the open air and into the tower’s dark interior.

Inside the torture chamber, cuffs bite shut around her wrists and ankles. A wall chain drops with a ringing snap, pinning her upright before she can struggle.

The red script beneath her goes dull and severed, then settles into a listening thrum. A few loose iron tags tremble on the wall nearby, waiting.

Far below, the pilgrim procession hesitates at the gates, their heads lifting toward the tower. The first hush of fear spreads through them like ash in wind.

Repine bounds out of my shadow and I look down at him and give him an affectionate pet. "Well they came all this way to see me, might as well be accommodating." I jump from the balcony and land effortlessly in front of the pilgrims.

Repine

Repine tears free of Delfarius’s shadow and lands at his boots, sleek and alert. Delfarius gives the hound a brief, affectionate stroke, and the tower answers with a low, listening click from below.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Well. They come all this way to see me, might as well be accommodating.

He drops from the balcony in one clean fall, cloak snapping once in the ash wind.

Delfarius touches down before the pilgrims without a stumble, boots settling hard into the road. Repine pads to his side, head low, eyes bright.

The pilgrims flinch as one. Their banner dips, and the front ranks recoil from the sudden nearness of him.

Above them, the Obsidian Tower stays sealed. No bodies follow, only its red script pulsing on the stones and the hidden wall giving one hard, approving thrum.

The nearest pilgrims stare at Delfarius in open fear, then lower their heads in ragged sequence as if the sight itself has struck them down.

"Who speaks for you all, do so quickly before I lose my patience." I glance around at the pilgrims, smirking as I can sense and taste their fear of seeing me face to face.

The nearest pilgrim rises from a bow with ash on his sleeves and fear in his throat. He does not look at the others, only at Delfarius.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Who speaks for you all, do so quickly before I lose my patience.

The words land like a blade laid flat. Several pilgrims flinch harder, and one woman at the front lifts the white banner just enough to steady her hands.

Pilgrim Leader

Pilgrim Leader

I speak for them. We came to kneel, and to be judged by the Unmaker.

The tower answers from far above with a hard click, as if it hears the confession and approves the shape of it.

Pilgrim Leader

Pilgrim Leader

If you command it, we will go down on the road and teach the others to bow.

Repine stays tight at Delfarius’s side, and the pilgrims bow lower. One man trembles so badly a clay charm slips from his fingers and cracks in the ash.

I laugh loudly at them all and say only one word. "Kneel." I look down at the clay charm and without reaching for it determine if it is worthless mortal trinket or if it is something to be concerned about.

Delfarius’s laugh rolls over the road, loud and cruel, and the pilgrims flinch as one. The cracked clay charm lies in the ash at his feet, ignored like dust.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Kneel.

The word drops flat and final. One pilgrim buckles at once, then another, and the white banner sags as hands slip from it.

Pilgrim Leader

Pilgrim Leader

We kneel. We kneel to the Unmaker.

The front rank folds first, then the rest follow in a ragged wave. The clay charm is only a broken mortal trinket, dead ash and baked mud.

Above, the Obsidian Tower answers with a hard approving click. The lower stone throat stays open, and the pilgrims bow lower still, waiting for what Delfarius does next.

I look over the gathered mortals. "You asked for judgement, Why?" I look and see if there are ones gathered here that deserve my judgement. Ones that can not live with themselves for the things they have done.

Delfarius lets the question hang like a blade over the bowed road, and the pilgrims go very still. His gaze moves over them one by one, reading sweat, shame, and the shape of what they have done.

Delfarius

Delfarius

You asked for judgement. Why?

A pilgrim near the front shakes so hard his hands nearly leave the dirt. Behind him, another cannot lift his face from the ash, and a few in the second rank flinch like the words have found them.

Delfarius's perception cuts through the kneeling line. Some come with honest fear, but others carry the heavy, sick stillness of men who have kneecaps in their souls, men who have consented to burning, taking, or betrayal and cannot bear their own reflection.

The Pilgrim Leader swallows and stays bowed, white banner slack in his grip. Repine prowls a slow half-circle at Delfarius's heel, eyes bright and hungry, while the tower above gives another listening click.

Among the front rank, one pilgrim starts to tremble apart from the rest, and another presses a bloodless hand to his mouth as if to keep a name from escaping. The ash road feels thinner now, as if it has already begun to choose who survives being seen.

The pilgrim line remains kneeling, but the guilty ones are marked by Delfarius's stare, and the whole crowd waits for him to decide which of them is fit for judgment.

I point a finger at the pilgrim in the front rank who murdered his wife and child while he was on a drunken fit rage. I then point to the one who tries to keep the name of his former lover out of his lips, the lover he was commanded to kill because they were an enemy of his lord. I smirk and walk up to the one who is trying not to say the name and lean in closer to them, standing over them and say the name "Elle" I laugh old and ancient. "The rest of you may leave us. I have found these two worthy of my judgement and mercy." I laugh louder at the word mercy.

Delfarius’s finger lands on the first pilgrim, then the second, and the bowed line fractures into silent recognition. The ash-road goes rigid around them.

Delfarius

Delfarius

The rest of you may leave us. I have found these two worthy of my judgement and mercy.

The words cut through the kneeling crowd. Several pilgrims start to rise at once, but others stay frozen, heads still down, afraid to be counted with the marked men.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Elle.

Delfarius speaks the name at the one who is swallowing it. The pilgrim jolts as if struck, and the hidden confession breaks loose in the open air.

Pilgrim Leader

Pilgrim Leader

He did it. He killed his wife and child in a drunken rage, and he was ordered to kill the one he loved.

The road empties around the confession. The rest of the pilgrims back away in ragged fear, leaving the two condemned men exposed before Delfarius, while Repine’s low, hungry attention sharpens at his heel. The tower answers with a hard listening click, and the front rank knows the judgment has ended the line.

I fold my arms across my chest and look down at the pilgrim leader with a cold dethatched expression. "Why are you still here. Go lead the rest to my cathedral. Now."

Delfarius folds his arms and lets the silence do the work. The front rank stays bowed, but the break in the line spreads wider as heads turn toward the road back to the city.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Why are you still here. Go lead the rest to my cathedral. Now.

The Pilgrim Leader jolts, then drops lower, almost flattening himself into the ash. The white banner sags from his hands as if it has grown too heavy to bear.

Pilgrim Leader

Pilgrim Leader

Yes. At once. We will go, and we will tell them.

He turns without daring to look up. Behind him, the retreating pilgrims begin to rise in ragged sequence, already making room for obedience.

Repine lifts his head and gives a low, approving breath toward the fleeing line. Near Delfarius's boots, the cracked clay charm in the ash splits cleanly in two, its old warding gone.

As the Pilgrim Leader hurries off, the tower answers with a deeper listening pulse, and for a heartbeat the red script in the stones forms a single word beneath Delfarius's feet, then fades.

New Gift: Pilgrim-Breaker's Authority

I look over to the two judged men and laugh at them as they are crouched kneeling in front of me. I circle them like a wolf circling downed prey. "Do you two want death and to be unmade to no longer suffer or have you come to me for me to absolve you of your sins? I do not."

Delfarius lets the silence crack first, and the two judged men feel it. The pilgrims who still linger at the road’s edge stop watching the retreat and watch him instead.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Do you two want death and to be unmade to no longer suffer or have you come to me for me to absolve you of your sins? I do not.

He circles them in slow, measured steps, all wolf and no hurry. Ash shifts under his boots, and Repine shadows the turn with hungry patience at his heel.

Then give us judgment. Not comfort. Judgment.

The nearer pilgrim bows harder, as if trying to press his shame into the road. The other stays kneeling, jaw tight, and the line behind them goes very still.

Pilgrim Leader

Pilgrim Leader

If he names it, we obey it. That is why we came.

Above them, the tower answers with a hard, listening click. Far off in the stone, the red script flickers once, then goes dark, as if waiting to hear whether the road breaks or bows.

Delfarius’s growl cuts across the ash road, and the Pilgrim Leader freezes with the banner half-lifted. The nearest retreating pilgrims stop as if yanked by invisible cords, their faces turning pale toward him.

Delfarius

I told you to leave, persist here longer and you will regret it.

The words land cleanly. The Pilgrim Leader lowers his head, tightens both hands on the white banner, and starts to edge the line backward without daring to answer.

Delfarius looks down at the two judged men and laughs over them, low and cold. Pilgrim 1 shrinks deeper into his bow, while Pilgrim 2 keeps his chin lifted but loses color at the mouth.

He means it. Move. Before he changes his mind.

We are not being spared. We are being measured.

Repine circles once behind Delfarius’s heel, ears pricked, then settles again as the rear line of pilgrims gives way. The cracked clay charm at the road’s edge splits fully apart, and the tower’s red script flashes a single word beneath the stones before vanishing.
