A Grim Whistle at Dusk

Seth stands in the center of his small, dusty house, the scent of stale air and ozone clinging to his clothes. The sun is already dipping below the western ridge, painting his walls in hues of bruised purple and deep orange. He stares at his bandaged, empty sleeve, the phantom weight of his hand still twitching. Outside, the rhythmic, heavy thudding of a hammer against a fence post echoes through the yard, a grim reminder that the Kingdom is still under siege.

Seth

Seth

The walls are closing in, and every tick of the clock is a heartbeat I am stealing from the Saviors. I can’t stay here waiting for Negan to finish what he started at the train depot.

A sharp, familiar whistle cuts through the silence of the room, followed by the sound of gravel crunching under boots outside. Seth moves toward the window, his single hand hovering near the grip of the Colt 45 resting on the scarred wooden table.

Seth

Seth

Who’s there. Speak up or get moved.

Miller

Miller

It’s me, Seth. Open the door. We have a problem at the western gate that won't wait for sunrise.

Right now! I say because I just got back and I'm tired from training all day then I walk out to see what it is with Miller as we find out one of the kids from the kingdom was bitten and dying from infection slowly because they were sneaking outside the walls at night I say how did this happen and miller explains and Sarah walks past us looking upset well Stella follows her trying to get her to cheer up because she's sad that a kid is going to die

Seth

Seth

Dammit, Miller. I just got back. I’m exhausted, but fine, talk.

Miller

Miller

No time for rest. It’s a kid, Seth. Bitten at the western gate. The infection is moving fast.

Seth

Seth

A bite? They’re supposed to be secure behind these walls. If the perimeter is failing, we’re all dead.

Seth grabs his coat and steps out into the cool night air. Near the infirmary, he sees a small figure huddled on a cot. The reality of the situation hits like a physical blow.

Seth

Seth

How the hell did this happen, Miller?

Miller

Miller

They were sneaking out at night to scavenge. Thought they knew the routes. They didn't.

Sarah brushes past them, her face pale and etched with grief. Stella follows close behind, hand outstretched, desperately trying to pull Sarah toward the shelter of the main hall.

Seth

Seth

Watching them scramble to hide their pain while someone dies just inches away... it’s going to break this place apart if we don't hold it together.

Seth

Seth

Dammit, Miller. Get the parents. Now. This isn't a place for spectators, it’s a deathbed.

Miller

Miller

They’re already here, Seth. They know.

Seth steps toward the cot, his voice sharp with command, but his attempt to force order backfires. His gruff delivery registers not as leadership, but as cold, heartless pragmatism to the mourning family. Sarah lets out a sharp, jagged sob that echoes off the infirmary walls, her posture folding inward. Stella pulls away from the wall, her expression hardening into a mixture of fear and sudden, sharp resentment as she blocks Seth’s path to the cot.

Seth

Seth

I pushed too hard. I’m trying to keep the community from unraveling, but to them, I just sound like the monsters we're hiding from.

Stella

Stella

Don't you dare tell us how to say goodbye. Get out of our way.

God damnit get there parents they can't just not know about this then Miller goes to get the girls father to be with her before she goes

Seth

Seth

I’m sorry. You’re right. Please, take your time. I will go and bring her father here so he can be with her.

Miller

Miller

I'll handle the gate, Seth. I'll make sure the father gets in safely.

The tension in the small room remains thick, but the heat of the confrontation breaks. Stella’s hand drops from the air, her fingers trembling as she returns to the girl’s side. Seth takes a half-step back, his boots scuffing the floorboards. He feels the phantom weight of his missing limb, a reminder of his own vulnerability. He turns toward the infirmary exit, his jaw tight.

Seth

Seth

The walls might keep the dead out, but they don't do a damn thing for the grief inside. I need to be better at this, or the people I’m trying to save will end up hating me more than the Saviors do.

The father rushes in the room in a frantic state where is she then runs to the side of her bed gets to his knees to her level and says hey sweetie it's okay your gonna be okay as she barely looks up at him and says I'm sorry dad I just wanted to help and tears fill the fathers eyes

FAILURE (Good Diplomacy, rolled +0)

A Grim Whistle at Dusk

The father bursts through the door, his chest heaving. He does not see Seth or the others. He only sees the small, trembling shape on the cot. He drops to his knees, his hands hovering inches from her, afraid to touch her as if she were made of glass.

Father

Hey, sweetie. It is okay. You are going to be okay.

The girl, barely able to keep her eyes focused, reaches out a limp hand toward his face.

Girl

I am sorry, Dad. I just wanted to help.

The father’s composure shatters. He lets out a jagged, broken sob that echoes off the infirmary walls, his forehead pressing against the mattress. The weight of his grief is absolute, and it fills the room like rising water. Seth stands frozen in the doorway, his attempt to manage the situation failing as the raw, unfiltered humanity of the scene renders his diplomacy completely hollow.

Seth

Seth

My words are useless here. I am nothing more than a ghost in their final hour.

The father rushes in the room in a frantic state where is she then runs to the side of her bed gets to his knees to her level and says hey sweetie it's okay your gonna be okay as she barely looks up at him and says I'm sorry dad I just wanted to help and tears fill the fathers eyes

SUCCESS (Good Diplomacy, rolled +3)

The atmosphere in the infirmary shifts from sharp tension to a suffocating, heavy silence. Seth steps forward, his boots silent on the floorboards, his hand resting instinctively near his holster—not out of aggression, but a subconscious need for the weight of his weapon in the face of such profound helplessness. He watches the father’s shoulders convulse, the man’s world narrowing down to the tiny, shallow breaths of his daughter.

Seth

Seth

Miller, give them a moment. We step outside.

Seth’s voice is steady, stripped of the pragmatic edge he used earlier. He places a hand on Miller’s shoulder, guiding him toward the door. The community needs a leader, but right now, they just need the door closed. As they retreat, Seth pauses, looking back one last time at the pair.

Seth

Seth

I wanted to build a world where this doesn't happen. Today, I failed. Tomorrow, I have to make sure no one else has to feel this.

Miller

Miller

They aren't going to make it through the night, Seth.

We hear him saying you don't gotta be sorry babygirl your so brave just like your mother was as she smiles at him one last time and you hear the broken grieving father scream noooo my baby girl I'm so sorry I'm so sorry I wasn't there for you me and miller feel the pain from the porch as he says I'm sorry baby one last time and says I can't do it and ask me to but I have a flashback and see my son happy and playing then I get unresponsive and miller says it's okay Seth I'll do it

FAILURE (Good Willpower, rolled +0)

A Grim Whistle at Dusk

The girl’s final, flickering smile breaks the father. A jagged, raw scream rips through the infirmary, echoing against the walls. Seth turns away, but the sound anchors him.

Seth

Seth

A toy car. Dirt on his knees. The smell of grass. My boy is laughing.

The memory hits Seth like a physical blow. His vision blurs, the clinical white walls warping into the sunny backyard of a life he can no longer touch. He sways, his prosthetic arm useless at his side, his breath hitching in a jagged rhythm. The weight of his own trauma collapses his composure, leaving him staring blankly into the middle distance, unable to process the grief before him.

Miller

Miller

Seth? Hey, look at me. You're shaking, man. Step back. I'll handle the rest.

Miller’s hand firmly grips Seth’s shoulder, pulling him away from the harrowing scene while the father continues to sob over his child.

The hallway air grows thin, smelling of antiseptic and stagnant grief. Seth’s knees buckle, his vision tunneling into the flickering memories of a past that no longer exists. He leans heavily against the infirmary doorframe, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. The world around him loses focus, replaced by the ghost of his son’s laughter.

Seth

Seth

He's right there. He’s running through the tall grass. Why can’t I reach him? Why is the grass turning to ash?

Miller

Miller

Seth, look at me. You're shaking, man. Step back. I'll handle the rest.

Miller’s hand clamps down on Seth’s shoulder. The grip is firm, a tether pulling him back from the precipice of a total mental breakdown. As Miller steers him toward the porch, the father’s keening wails from inside the room bleed into the silence of the night, raw and unrelenting. Seth is a hollow shell, his legendary composure shattered by a single moment of vulnerability.

FAILURE (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

A Grim Whistle at Dusk

The porch air bites, carrying the phantom scent of cedar and old memories. Seth collapses onto the weathered floorboards, his remaining hand clawing at the wood as his mind fractures. The sound of the father’s agony from inside the house morphs into the echo of a playground siren, and the porch light overhead flickers into the harsh, golden sun of a Saturday afternoon that ended years ago.

Seth

Seth

He’s laughing. He’s reaching for the ball. Don't look at the walkers, don't look at the fire, just watch him play. He’s still here.

Miller

Miller

Stop it, Seth. You're losing the thread. Let go.

Seth remains catatonic, his eyes glassed over and vacant. He doesn't hear Miller, nor the wind rattling the gate chains. He is trapped in the loop of his own failure. Miller sighs, a jagged, weary sound, and he turns toward the infirmary door to take over the burden Seth can no longer carry.

Miller

Miller

God help us if he doesn't snap out of it. The Saviors won't wait for him to find his head again.

We hear him saying you don't gotta be sorry babygirl your so brave just like your mother was as she smiles at him one last time and you hear the broken grieving father scream noooo my baby girl I'm so sorry I'm so sorry I wasn't there for you me and miller feel the pain from the porch as he says I'm sorry baby one last time and says I can't do it and ask me to but I have a flashback and see my son happy and playing then I get unresponsive

FAILURE (Good Willpower, rolled +0)

A Grim Whistle at Dusk

The porch light pops, showering the scene in a sudden, suffocating darkness that smells of ozone. Seth remains slumped against the splintered wood, his phantom limb clutching at empty space while his chest heaves in shallow, jagged gasps. The silence from the infirmary is louder than the screams ever were.

Seth

Seth

The boy is running through the tall grass. He turns to look back at me, his face blurry, just a smudge of light in the static. Why is he turning away? Stay. Please, just stay.

Miller

Miller

Damn it, Seth. Look at me. We are out of time.

Miller grips Seth by the shoulders, shaking him, but the man is miles away. He stares through the railing, seeing only the ghosts of a life he cannot reclaim. The gate groans in the distance, a metal screech that signals the perimeter is failing, yet Seth does not blink. He is lost to the void of his own memory, the trauma hardening into a wall that no one can breach.

The memory tears through Seth like a serrated blade. The scent of ozone from the broken porch light twists, morphing into the smell of campfire smoke and clean linen. His son is laughing, spinning in circles, eyes bright with an innocence that has no place in this graveyard of a world.

Seth

Seth

He is right there. I can almost touch his shoulder. If I just reach out, he won't fade. He won't leave me.

Miller

Miller

Seth, get up! The Saviors don't wait for us to mourn!

Miller’s voice sounds like it is coming from underwater, distorted and hollow. Seth ignores the hand on his shoulder, his eyes wide and unblinking, fixed on the empty space where his son’s image once stood. A guttural, broken sound escapes his throat, somewhere between a sob and a growl. He remains pinned to the porch, his body a heavy, useless weight as the distant, rhythmic thud of the gate being breached echoes through the night.

Miller

Miller

God help us. He’s gone into the dark, and the wolves are already at the door.

We get Abraham then Miller me and Abraham bury the bodies

FAILURE (Good Willpower, rolled -2)

Seth lunges for his AK-47, fingers clumsy and trembling against the cold steel. The rifle slips, clattering loudly against the wood, and he stumbles forward. He tries to roar for Miller to fetch Abraham, but his voice is a wet, incoherent rasp that dies in the wind. The motion causes him to lose his balance entirely, his only hand sweeping uselessly through the empty air as he face-plants onto the splintered porch floor.

Seth

Seth

My hands. I cannot... I cannot hold anything anymore. I am failing them. I am failing everyone.

Miller

Miller

Seth, get up! You are going to get us all slaughtered!

Miller lunges to help, but the sound of the main gate splintering beneath the weight of the undead creates a cacophony that drowns out his words. Shadows begin to pour through the gap in the distance, a tide of rot and hunger. Seth remains splayed on the porch, staring at the dirt between the floorboards, paralyzed by the realization that he is no longer the man who can hold a line.

They then take out the four walkers that got through the door that was not locked because of the girl who recently went out

Critical hit for 6 damageWalker 1 is down

Adrenaline surges through Seth, overriding his tremors. He kicks out, catching the lead walker squarely in the chest, the force pinning the creature against the doorframe before he drives his boot into its skull with a sickening crunch. The walker collapses instantly, its head lolling unnaturally against the wood. Behind it, the other three corpses press forward, moaning, their rotting hands reaching for his throat.

Miller

Miller

Seth! Get up, man! We have to move!

Seth

Seth

One down. Three more. My body knows the rhythm even if my head is screaming.

The smell of wet rot fills the air as the second walker lunges, claws scraping against the siding just inches from Seth's face. He scrambles backward on his heels, desperate to keep the distance he needs to draw his sidearm. The weight of his own missing limb throws his rhythm off, causing him to teeter on the edge of the porch steps while the horde swells in the shadow of the gate.

Miller takes one out

Critical hit for 5 damageZombie 1 is down

Miller lunges, his hunting knife flashing in the dim porch light as he buries the blade into the temple of the lunging corpse. The walker drops like a sack of wet flour, twitching once before settling into the glass-strewn floorboards. Seth watches the motion, his breath hitching, his remaining hand twitching toward the grip of his Desert Eagle. The remaining two walkers close the gap, their fingers snagging on his denim jacket, forcing him to plant his boots to keep from toppling backward.

Seth

Seth

I am not dying on this porch. Not to these things. Not after everything.

With a guttural growl, Seth pivots on his lead leg, swinging his weight into a brutal shoulder check against the nearest creature. The impact sends the walker reeling into the splintered doorframe, giving him just enough clearance to level his pistol at the final encroaching shadow. The silence of the night is shattered by the heavy, rhythmic thud of the gate outside being hammered by the mounting swarm.

We then shoot a few shots alerting a few of the guards and Abraham as they run down to help and shoot zombies dead

Critical hit for 4 damageZombie 3 struck back for 3 damage

Seth pulls the Desert Eagle’s heavy trigger twice, the thunderous boom echoing off the house siding and drawing shouts from the distant perimeter guards. The bullets slam into the nearest creature, snapping its head back and dropping it into a heap. Before he can recover, the creature lunges, its decaying hand catching Seth in the ribs and driving the air from his lungs. He stumbles, his boots slipping on the glass as sharp pain flares in his side.

Seth

Seth

Stay up. Don't give them the ground.

Through the chaos, Abraham and the others sprint from the gate, their rifles barking in unison, dropping the remaining encroaching shadows. Seth gasps for air, leaning heavily against the splintered frame while the smell of gunpowder chokes the night air. The immediate threat fades, replaced by the crushing realization that the gate remains compromised.
