The western fence crawlspace is a claustrophobic gap beneath the chain-link, choked with damp autumn leaves and the metallic scent of oxidized iron. Beyond the wire, the railroad yard is deathly still, save for the faint, rhythmic scraping of something heavy being dragged through the mist near the water tower.

Seth
The girl is terrified, but this crawlspace is too small for a quick exit if we get boxed in. We need a better vantage point, or this becomes a grave.

Miller
He’s breathing hard, hand trembling near his holstered sidearm. He doesn’t like the look of that mist any more than I do.
A sudden, sharp whistle pierces the fog, followed by the sound of heavy boots crunching on gravel. The group freezes as a pair of silhouettes emerge from the swirling grey vapor, moving with the unnerving, lurching gait of the dead, yet they carry long, bladed poles.

Seth
Get down, now. They aren't just walkers. Keep the girl quiet.

“Find John and have him help”
SUCCESS (Legendary Tactics, rolled -1)

Seth scans the perimeter, his eyes narrowing as he spots a familiar figure shifting behind the rusted siding of a nearby railcar. It is John, his posture tense and weapon drawn. A quick, subtle hand gesture from Seth locks their gaze. John nods, understanding the tactical shift instantly. He begins a flanking maneuver through the shadows, his boots making no sound against the gravel as he prepares to intercept the encroaching figures.

Seth
John has the flank. If he takes the one on the left, I can neutralize the other before they realize we aren't just prey.

Miller
They are looking right at the crawlspace, Seth. They see us.
The two figures with the bladed poles stop, their heads snapping toward the iron door with unsettling, synchronized precision. The mist swirls violently around their feet as they tilt their heads like hounds picking up a scent.
Girl
Please, don't let them hear me.
One of the figures lets out a low, guttural rattle, raising its bladed pole as it begins to accelerate toward the opening.

Survive the assault by the masked figures
“Miller stay here and protect the girl with your life me and John will take these bastards”
Critical hit for 6 damage — Mysterious Figure 1 struck back for 3 damage

Seth leaps from the crawlspace, his combat knife flashing in the dim light. He drives the blade into the throat of the first attacker, the force of the strike sending the figure crashing back against the rusted railcar.

Seth
Miller, stay here and protect the girl with your life! Me and John will take these bastards!
The wounded assailant lunges forward in a final, desperate burst of strength. The bladed pole catches Seth across the side, tearing through his jacket and skin. Seth grunts, stumbling back, but he keeps his feet, his grip tightening on his Desert Eagle. The assailant slumps against the steel siding, blood pooling rapidly in the gravel. The second figure turns, his mask shifting as he observes the downed comrade, his pole held low and ready.

Seth
The Whisperers aren't just wearing dead skin. They fight like they're already ghosts. I need to finish this before the rest of their pack arrives.

Defeat the remaining Whisperer
“John shoots and kills one”
Critical hit for 3 damage — Whisperer 1 struck back but missed

John raises his pistol, the muzzle flash illuminating the rail yard, and a single crack echoes off the metal structures. The bullet strikes the lead Whisperer, who collapses instantly into the gravel. Seth swings his Desert Eagle toward the second attacker, but the enemy pivots, his bladed pole slicing through the air in a wide arc that narrowly misses Seth’s ribs. The Whisperer hisses, his eyes narrowed behind the gruesome mask, swaying as he prepares to charge again.

Seth
John’s shot was perfect, but these fanatics don't stop. If I don't neutralize this one now, he’ll get close enough to tear Miller and the girl apart.
“Shoot for the head”
Critical hit for 8 damage — Whisperer 1 is down

Seth pulls the trigger, his Desert Eagle bucking in his grip. The round strikes the Whisperer center-mass, the force sending the assailant reeling backward to collapse heavily against a stack of rotting wooden ties. The remaining Whisperer shrieks in rage, lunging forward with a desperate, frantic energy as he drives the tip of his bladed pole toward Seth’s chest. Seth pivots on his heavy boots, the steel blade whistling inches from his tactical vest, clanging uselessly against the side of a nearby railcar.

Seth
He’s cornered and erratic. If I let this go on, the noise will draw a horde to this yard before we can even reach the depot.

“John comes to help me heal my wounds”
SUCCESS (Superb First Aid, rolled -1)

Miller slides across the gravel, his movements fluid and efficient as he reaches your side, pulling a trauma kit from his belt. He keeps one hand firm on your shoulder to steady you while his other hand works the field dressing.

Miller
Hold still, Seth. That cut is deep, but it missed the vitals. I have you.

Seth
The pressure he applies is sharp, but the bleeding is already slowing. He didn't hesitate. This is the kind of loyalty I need to build this place.
The last Whisperer stumbles back, his momentum spent as he clutches his side, eyes wild and scanning the shadows for a path of retreat. The yard is eerily quiet, save for the distant, rhythmic clacking of the railroad switch, and the heavy breathing of the three survivors huddled by the railcar. The threat is contained, but the quiet is a warning. More of them are likely patrolling the perimeter.
