Breach at the Concrete Substation

The concrete substation hums with an unnerving, low-frequency vibration. Rain hammers against the reinforced roof, creating a rhythmic drumming that masks the sound of approaching footsteps. Seth stands near the central terminal, his boots scraping against the cold, damp floor.

This place feels like a tomb. It is quiet, but the air is thick with the smell of ozone and rotting vegetation. We need to lock this down before we become sitting ducks.

Miller

Miller

Pointing toward the heavy blast door Seth, the seal is failing. Something is forcing the hinges from the outside.

Seth

Seth

Miller is right. The metal is buckling under the pressure of something massive. If that door gives, we lose our only defensive advantage.

A shadow flickers behind the reinforced glass of the control booth, and a frantic knocking begins to echo through the substation. Seth raises his AK-47, his muscles tensed and ready for a breach.

Miller, cover the auxiliary vent. If that door buckles, we need to create a bottleneck in the narrow corridor. I am going to hold this line until you are in position.

Seth

Seth

John is uncharacteristically quiet. I need to make sure he is ready to act the second the steel snaps. If we break now, the horde will swarm us before we even reach the inner staircase.

Seth steps toward the center of the room, bracing his boots against the uneven floor plates. He keeps his AK-47 leveled at the center of the bowing metal, his finger hovering near the trigger. The thunderous bangs against the exterior intensify, and a hairline fracture begins to spiderweb across the reinforced hinges. Dust and paint flakes rain down from the ceiling, caught in the flickering light of a dying overhead tube.

Moving toward the vent Moving now. Do not let them catch you off guard, Seth. They are not just mindless anymore. They are relentless.

Seth

John, you alright over there?

The silence from the corner is heavier than the sound of the metal giving way. If John is buckling under the pressure now, I am going to have to drag him out of here along with the gear.

Seth keeps his eyes locked on the door as the frame screeches, the metal bowing inward like a crushed soda can. A sudden, sharp crack echoes through the substation as a rivet snaps, flying across the room and embedding itself into the wall behind the control booth. Through the corner of his eye, Seth spots John standing near the secondary terminal, his hands trembling as he grips the edge of the console. He is staring at the door, eyes wide and unfocused. The pressure against the steel mount reaches a breaking point as the hinges groan and begin to tear away from the concrete.

Seth

Seth

He’s not even blinking. If he doesn't pull his eyes away from that door, the next thing coming through it is going to be a walker’s teeth, and John is going to be the first one on the menu.

Seth lunges forward, aiming to shove John toward the safety of the interior barricade, but his boot catches on a loose segment of the buckled floor plating. He stumbles, his shoulder slamming into the terminal desk instead of the man. The momentum of the impact sends a stack of manuals and heavy diagnostic tools sliding off the console, clattering loudly against the concrete. John doesn't even flinch. He remains frozen, his hands clawing uselessly at the cold steel of the console as the blast door’s hinges finally scream, the entire metal slab shifting inward with a violent, jarring thud. A thick cloud of pulverized concrete dust erupts from the door frame, obscuring the view of the hallway beyond.

The blast door is bowing in like it’s made of tin foil. John is staring at the hinges as if he’s waiting for a miracle, but all I see is a death warrant.

The desperate shout vanishes into the chaotic screech of tortured metal. John doesn't turn, his pupils dilated and fixed on the vibrating seam of the doorway. He ignores Seth entirely, his lips moving in a silent, rhythmic prayer that fails to register over the roar of the concrete buckling. As Seth stumbles against the desk, a jagged shard of ceiling tile shears off from the vibrations, plummeting down to shatter inches from John’s boots. The blast door bows inward another foot, the massive locking pins groaning as they bend. The air grows heavy with the smell of ozone and wet earth. A shadow moves behind the dust-choked glass of the control booth, but John remains a statue, his gaze locked on the splintering frame.

Snap out of it, John! We aren't dying for your cowardice!

Seth

Seth

The man is frozen solid while the world falls apart. If I have to drag his dead weight out of here, I will, but he is going to cost us our lives if he stays this useless.

Seth shoves John’s shoulder, but the man is dead weight, swaying only slightly before returning to his rigid, prayerful slump. The impact of the shove sends Seth’s boot sliding across the slick, oil-stained concrete. Above them, the blast door’s hinge snaps with a sound like a gunshot, the metal arm whipping downward and burying itself deep into the substation desk. The force of the collapse knocks a heavy rack of files off the wall, raining paper and steel shelving down between Seth and his target. The shadow behind the glass booth moves again, now pressing a palm against the pane, but the glass spiderwebs as a heavy blow hits from the outside. The room begins to scream as the frame finally gives way.

Ask him what the hell is going on with him

Seth

Seth

Dammit, John, speak to me! Are you blind or just waiting to be fed to them?

Seth

Seth

The man is completely catatonic. I’m wasting precious seconds trying to reach a ghost while the metal is practically peeling off the walls.

Seth lunges forward to grab John by the collar, but his boot finds a patch of spilled hydraulic fluid. He loses his footing, his desperate reach turning into a stumbling lunge that misses John entirely and leaves him sprawled against the vibrating wall. Above the chaos, the blast door frame groans, the bolts shrieking as they shear away from the concrete. Dust and sparks shower down as the heavy steel begins to tilt inward, forced by the sheer mass of the undead press outside. Through the cracked glass of the booth, the stranger stops knocking. They press their face against the remaining jagged pane, their eyes wide, watching Seth struggle to regain his balance while the room begins to cave.

Snap out of it damnit

The floor is slick, the air is choking with concrete dust, and John is just staring into the abyss like it’s a sunset.

Seth’s boot skates across the slick floor. He slams hard into the corner, his shoulder catching the edge of a jagged piece of metal paneling. The breath leaves him in a sharp wheeze. The massive steel door shrieks one final time, the remaining top hinges snapping like dry twigs. It topples inward with the force of a falling tree, burying the space between Seth and the catatonic John under a storm of twisted rebar and grey dust. The impact vibrates through the soles of Seth's boots, shaking his grip on his rifle. Behind the shattered control booth glass, the stranger recoils, hands pressed over their ears as the room begins to groan under the weight of the encroaching horde.

Miller whats the move

SUCCESS (Legendary Tactics, rolled -1)

Miller

Miller

Forget him, boss! We create a choke point behind the vending machines! Move!

Seth

Seth

If we stay here, we're tombstone fodder. Miller's got the right instinct, but that glass booth is our only tactical high ground.

Seth shoves the falling debris aside, his boots finding purchase on the slick, dust-covered floor. He ignores the throbbing in his shoulder, his eyes snapping to the layout of the room. The vending machines are heavy, reinforced steel, and clustered near the northern wall. He lunges for the nearest one, shoving it with his full weight to create a jagged barricade against the gaping hole where the door once stood. Miller covers the movement, his rifle spitting rhythmically as he suppresses the shadow-figures pushing through the cloud of concrete dust. The stranger behind the glass is screaming, though the sound is muted by the chaotic roar of the horde clawing through the threshold.

I'm not leaving him he's my brother you fucker but it turns out John was bitten by a zombie and he's infected he wants to go out with a bang he wants to take a bunch with him he knows he's gonna die he just wants the rest of the group safe and together so John is infected and dying and there is nothing we can do he wants to go out shooting a bunch then ending it with an explosion that catches half the heard in it

Critical hit for 5 damageHorde Member 1 is down

Seth lunges forward, his Desert Eagle roaring as he plants a bullet square into the chest of the nearest creature, sending it slumping back into the encroaching swarm. John stumbles into the open, his face pale and grey. He fumbles with his vest, revealing a cluster of rigged grenades and a fresh, jagged bite mark on his forearm.

John

John

Don't look at me like that, Seth. I'm already gone. Let me make this count.

Seth

Seth

The look in his eyes is absolute. He isn't asking for permission, he's stating a fact. If I stop him, I'm just sentencing the rest of us to the same fate.

John turns toward the breach, pulling the pin on his primary charge with a metallic click that pierces through the gunfire. Miller keeps the line held, his face etched in grim realization as he shifts his aim to cover the corners of the room. The stranger behind the booth glass hammers frantically on the frame, watching the inevitable chain reaction begin.

No brother there must be something we can do

FAILURE (Good Willpower, rolled -2)

Seth

Seth

John, wait! There has to be another way, put the pin back!

Seth

Seth

I reach for his arm, but my footing is ruined by the slick of blood and oil on the concrete. My boots slide uselessly, and I slam hard against the vending machine, the wind knocked out of me. The distance between us is suddenly an impossible chasm.

John doesn't even turn his head. He smiles, a hollow, haunted expression that signals he has already moved on from the living. He steps directly into the path of the encroaching horde, effectively shielding the rest of the room from the immediate wave.

John

John

There’s no way, Seth. Only time.

He releases the handle. The blast of the ignition is blinding, a wall of white heat that eclipses the gray dust of the substation. The shockwave tosses debris like shrapnel, and the control booth glass shatters into a million stinging diamonds, leaving the stranger behind it exposed to the ruin.
