Climbing the Tower Under Siege

Seth and Miller scramble across the rain-slicked gravel of the rail yard, putting distance between themselves and the mangled remains of the maintenance shed. The distant howling of the horde echoes against the rusted skeletons of abandoned cargo trains. They find temporary respite near a concrete water tower, where a high chain-link fence offers a potential climb to higher ground.

Seth

Seth

Need to find the others. Elias is long gone, but he can't be far with those coordinates.

Miller

Miller

We cannot stay here, Seth. The noise from the shed will draw everything in this yard to our position within minutes.

Seth

Seth

Grab your gear. We climb the tower. If we have the high ground, we can scout the road and spot the others. Move!

The two men sprint toward the base of the tower as the distant clatter of metal against metal signals the horde has breached the yard perimeter. They scramble up the rusted ladder, the wind whipping Seth’s beanie as he prepares to scan the desolate horizon for signs of their scattered group.

John get over here and move as a unit us three

SUCCESS (Legendary Tactics, rolled -1)

Climbing the Tower Under Siege

A shadow darts between the railcars, ducking under the rusted coupling of a flatbed. John, his breathing ragged, emerges from the fog and lunges toward the tower.

Seth

Seth

Over here, John! Get to the ladder, we move as a unit now!

Miller

Miller

He is going to draw them right to us if he is not careful.

Seth

Seth

He is fast. If we link up, we stand a better chance of cutting a path out of this yard before the perimeter is completely overrun.

John reaches the base, his knuckles white as he grips the cold iron of the ladder. He casts a panicked glance toward the flickering torchlight of the approaching horde, then looks up at the tower where Seth and Miller await. The ground trembles as the weight of hundreds of undead feet strikes the gravel, turning the rail yard into a gauntlet of snapping jaws and rhythmic, shuffling death.

Alright make sure we stick together no matter what from now on John

Seth

Seth

Grab the ladder, John. We move as one unit now, no exceptions. Keep your eyes on my back and your head on a swivel.

Seth

Seth

He made it. With the three of us, we can force a break through the southern fence. The horde is thick, but their rhythm is predictable.

Miller

Miller

Do it then, Seth. Before the rain washes away our tracks and we lose the chance to spot the others.

John heaves his body upward, boots clanging against the rusted metal as he ascends toward the platform. The first droplets of heavy rain slick the tower, turning the metal rungs into a treacherous, icy path. Below, the horde ripples like a dark tide, a sea of graying skin and rot surging against the tower base. A few walkers collide with the structure, the impact vibrating through the steel and rattling the very ground beneath them.

Ask John what weapon he has

Climbing the Tower Under Siege
Seth

Seth

John. Keep moving, don't stop for the wind. What are you carrying? I need to know if we have enough firepower to cut a path through this mess.

Seth

Seth

The metal is slicker than ice. If he slips, he is done for. I need to get him up here fast before the tower loses its structural integrity under the weight of the dead.

John

John

Just a pipe and a half-empty handgun, Seth. The rest of my ammo went dry two blocks back.

John’s boots struggle for purchase on the wet, vibrating rungs. Above him, the rain intensifies, a freezing downpour that obscures the horizon. A sudden, massive shudder ripples through the steel as the horde slams against the support beams, forcing the tower to sway dangerously. John lunges for the final rung, his knuckles white against the freezing metal, eyes locked on Seth’s outstretched hand.

Shit okay take my spare rifle

Seth

Grab it, John! Take the AK. It’s got a full mag. Get your feet up here now!

Seth

Seth

Seth

Seth

The tower is leaning another three degrees. If the base beams buckle, we are going down with the scrap metal. I have to stabilize his footing or he’s going to lose his grip.

Seth lunges forward, ignoring the swaying steel, and thrusts the stock of the AK-47 toward John’s reaching hand. As the rifle passes between them, the tower moans, a long screech of tortured iron echoing over the roar of the rain. Miller shifts his weight, pinning his back against the rusted railing to act as a counterweight for Seth. John’s fingers brush the cold polymer of the rifle grip just as a support girder at the base snaps with a deafening crack. The entire structure jerks violently, sending a shower of loose rust and rain-slicked debris raining down into the surging mass of the undead below.

Pull John up

FAILURE (Superb Strength, rolled -3)

Climbing the Tower Under Siege

The sudden shift in gravity betrays them. As the tower tilts, the rifle slides through John’s desperate, rain-slicked grip. Seth lunges to compensate, but his boots lose purchase on the vibrating metal platform. The momentum carries him forward into the void instead of back into safety.

John

John

Seth!

Miller

Miller

Hold on!

Seth

Seth

The world is spinning. I missed the reach. We're both going to fall.

Seth crashes against the railing, his chest slamming into the freezing steel. John’s hand slips from his fingers, his boots dangling over the abyss as the tower groans a final, dying screech. The entire structure lurches another terrifying angle, and for a heartbeat, time seems to freeze as the three men scramble against the slick, shifting geometry of the collapsing water tower.

Pull John up

Climbing the Tower Under Siege
Seth

Seth

I am not letting him go. If this tower falls, it falls with us on it, not with him under it.

Seth digs his boots into a buckling seam of the metal railing. With a guttural roar, he ignores the agonizing strain in his shoulders and lunges. He catches John by the tactical webbing of his harness, his fingers locking into the nylon with a desperate, iron-clad grip. The tower groans, twisting violently under the weight of the rain and the shift in balance, but the momentum halts. Seth heaves, muscles corded and pulsing, hauling the man upward against the relentless pull of the gravity-defying tilt.

John

John

I’ve got you... don't let go!

Miller

Miller

The base is giving way! If we don't jump now, we're going down with the scrap!

Below them, the sea of undead roars, their arms reaching toward the swaying cage. The metal floor beneath them shrieks as it shears away from the central pillar, leaving them dangling over the carnage as the tower begins its final collapse.

Jump! Jump where!?

FAILURE (Superb Strength, rolled -1)

Seth lunges for the rusted structural cross-brace hanging over the rail yard fence, but his boots find no purchase on the slick, oil-stained metal. The tower's lurch sends his momentum spiraling into nothingness. The three men plummet as the platform disintegrates, the steel screeching like a dying beast. Gravity takes hold, pulling them toward the swarm below. Seth hits the top of the chain-link perimeter fence mid-fall, the jagged wire tearing at his clothes as he tumbles over, leaving John and Miller to crash hard into the tangled mess of the collapsing tower debris just shy of the fence line. The horde surges, their collective moan rising in volume as they converge on the impact site.

Seth

Escape the rail yard horde

Jump! Jump where!?

FAILURE (Good Agility, rolled -4)

The chain-link rips through Seth’s jacket, slamming him into the muddy dirt on the outer side of the perimeter. The wind is knocked out of him, his vision swimming with sparks. Ten feet away, the water tower wreckage collapses like a heap of twisted scrap, pinning John and Miller beneath a cage of bent girders. The horde spills through the gap in the fence, a sea of grasping grey hands and rotting flesh closing the distance. John struggles to push a steel beam off his legs, his fingers clawing at the muck. Miller is motionless, half-buried under a jagged sheet of corrugated tin.

Seth

Seth

I’m over the wall, but they aren’t. If I leave them, they’re dead. If I go back, I’m probably dead with them. The wall is the only thing keeping the swarm from me, for now.

John

John

Help! My leg is caught!

Seth

Seth

Think, Seth. Is that rifle even still in reach, or is it buried under the metal?

Rescue John and Miller from the wreckage

Jump where!?

SUCCESS (Legendary Tactics, rolled +1)

Seth’s body hits the ground, but he doesn't stay down. Relying on muscle memory, he rolls through the muck, coming up on one knee. His Desert Eagle is still holstered tight, but the AK-47 is nowhere in sight. Through a gap in the fence, he spots it lying on a patch of elevated concrete, just inches from the reach of the encroaching horde. He vaults back toward the gap, timing his move between the lurches of the dead. He lunges, sliding across the wet concrete like a pro athlete, fingers closing around the cold steel of the rifle’s stock just as a walker’s jaw snaps at his boot. He kicks the creature aside, snaps the weapon to his shoulder, and levels it at the debris pinning his men.

Seth

Seth

Miller, move! I'm clearing a path!

Seth

Seth

The horde is thick. I have one clean shot at the pile to shift the weight without hitting them. Everything depends on this trigger pull.

Critical hit for 5 damageHorde Member 1 struck back for 3 damage

Climbing the Tower Under Siege

Seth squeezes the trigger, the AK-47 barking a sharp retort that silences the immediate threat. The lead walker jerks backward, a spray of dark fluid erupting behind it as its skull shatters, dropping it instantly into the mud. Seth steps forward to reach his pinned allies, but a second walker—concealed by the torrential downpour—lunges from the debris. It slams a rotted forearm into Seth’s ribs, knocking the wind out of him and sending him staggering back toward the fence.

Seth

Seth

Agh! Keep your distance!

Seth

Seth

Ribs are bruised, maybe cracked. I can't let them close the gap or Miller and John are as good as dead. I have to finish this now.

Where the hell is everyone else in are group even at miller help me get john

Critical hit for 2 damageHorde Member 1 is down

Climbing the Tower Under Siege

Seth lunges forward, his boots churning through the slick mud as he drives his heavy combat knife into the base of the walker’s skull, silencing the creature with a wet crunch. He wrenches the blade free, chest heaving, and pivots toward the crushed wreckage.

Seth

Seth

Miller! Get up and grab John’s arm! We need to haul him out of the debris before the rest of this pack smells blood!

Miller

Miller

I’m trying! My leg is pinned under this steel support! I can’t get any leverage!

Seth

Seth

If we stay here, we're burial ground. I need to clear the path, but the fence is already sagging under the weight of the incoming horde. We have seconds, not minutes.

A guttural roar echoes from behind the perimeter fence as a dozen more shadows break through the gap. The rain intensifies, turning the debris field into a treacherous slurry of metal and gore, and the group remains trapped in the shifting wreckage.

SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +1)

Climbing the Tower Under Siege

Seth digs his boots into the mud, ignoring the searing pain in his ribs. He wraps his calloused hands around the bent steel support beam and heaves with every ounce of his strength. The metal groans, screeching as it shifts upward just enough to free Miller.

Seth

Seth

Now, Miller! Move!

Miller

Miller

I'm clear! Grab his harness!

With Miller stumbling back, Seth lunges toward the wreckage pinning John. He finds the leverage point and jerks the debris aside. John is breathless but conscious, his eyes wide as he looks toward the fence where the first of the rotting dead scramble over the bent wire.

Seth

Seth

The perimeter is failing. If we don't move toward the rail maintenance junction now, we are going to be overwhelmed.

Thanks for the assist, Seth. My leg... I think it's just bruised, but I can't sprint.
