The basement ceiling groans, showering dust and thick, black sludge onto the floor. Seth clutches his AK-47, bracing against the vibration of heavy footsteps above. John and Miller huddle near the jagged crawlspace hole, checking their ammunition.

Stranger
He’s been watching us from the shadows of the water heater, holding a weathered map.

Stranger
Seth, I know a way out of this hellhole that doesn't involve feeding the dead. There is a fortified depot two miles north. I’ll give you the location and the gate codes, but you have to clear the fuel room for me first. I need the supply crate inside.

Seth
Trusting this guy is a gamble, but staying here is a death sentence. If he wants that crate, he’s going to help us fight our way out.

Seth
Stranger, we have a deal. You lead the way, and you keep that map secure. If you’re leading us into a trap, you won’t live long enough to regret it.

“Good thing there's only a such thing as regular walkers from the walking dead and not what I dreamed about I rant”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Seth
Those nightmares of hyper-evolved monstrosities were just my brain playing tricks on me. These are just normal walkers. I can handle this. I can lead us through this.
Seth exhales, the tension in his shoulders dropping just enough to steady his aim. He gestures toward the crawlspace, his gaze sharp and focused. Above, the rhythmic thudding of undead feet intensifies, and a crack spiderwebs across the low ceiling, sending a deluge of debris raining down.

Miller
Stranger, if you're lying to us, I'll make sure you're the first one the horde reaches when they tear through that ceiling.

Stranger
Miller, trust is a luxury we don't have. Follow my lead, and keep your voices down. The fuel room is just past the boiler, but the vents are compromised. Move now.

Seth
He’s nervous. Either he’s hiding something, or he’s as terrified of those things as we are. Time to move.
“Who's this stranger I ask john”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +1)

Seth
John, stay close. Who is this guy? Why does he know this basement layout like he built it himself?

John
I don't know, Seth. He just appeared out of the fog when you were scouting. Keep that Desert Eagle ready.

Stranger
I hear you whispering. I spent three years living in the maintenance tunnels under this sector. I know every crawlspace and pipe in this facility. That makes me your best chance at surviving the next ten minutes. Are we moving or are we dying here?

Seth
Three years down here? He looks too clean for that. He’s lying, or he’s been scavenging better than anyone I've ever met. I’ll play along, but I’m watching his hands.
A massive chunk of concrete detaches from the ceiling, plummeting inches from Miller. The air fills with thick, choking dust. The pounding from above sounds less like footsteps and more like a heavy object being dragged across the floorboards.
“Call his bullshit and say he's too clean to be going through here”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +1)

Seth
You expect me to buy that? You look like you just walked out of a department store shower, not three years of maintenance tunnels. If you've been living in the filth down here, you’re hiding more than just the location of the fuel room.

Stranger
Perception is a dangerous thing, friend. Keep looking at my boots and my jacket instead of the ceiling, and you'll be buried before I even get a chance to open that crate.

Seth
His eyes didn't even flicker. He’s either telling the truth or he’s the best liar I’ve ever met. I need to keep him in front of me.
The floor shudders violently, kicking up a cloud of grey soot as the ceiling joists groan under the weight of the encroaching horde. Above, the rhythmic, wet thuds intensify, and a jagged crack snakes across the concrete, leaking black, viscous sludge directly between Seth and the Stranger.
“Is that an insult cuz if it is I'll have you dead and not Buried you'll be bones on the surface cuz your not worth the energy to bury”
FAILURE (Good Willpower, rolled -1)

Seth
Is that an insult? Because if it is, I'll have you dead, and not buried. You'll be nothing but sun-bleached bones on the surface, because you aren't worth the calories it takes to dig a hole.

Stranger
He has the tactical sense of a blunt instrument. Useful, but loud.

Stranger
You talk big for a man standing in a collapsing tomb, Seth. I don't care if you kill me or kiss me, but the ceiling cares if you keep shouting. Keep your weapon steady or we're both paste.

Seth
My pulse is hammering against my skull. I let his jab get under my skin. Focus. If the ceiling drops, the argument won't matter.
The floor buckles, a massive iron pipe wrenching free from the wall and crashing into the sludge between them. A shower of concrete dust blinds the room as the entire ceiling plate bows downward by several inches. The Stranger doesn't flinch, already stepping toward the dim shadows of the maintenance passage.
“Is that an insult cuz if it is I'll have you dead and not Buried you'll be bones on the surface cuz your not worth the energy to bury”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +0)

Miller
We are going to die in a hole because these two can't stop measuring each other's worth.

Miller
Shut it, both of you. The concrete is coming down, and I for one don't want to be a garnish on this floor. Move!

Stranger
Wise words from the only one with a functioning brain, Miller.

Seth
The weight of the building is literally screaming. The groan of bending steel is drowning out their bickering. I need to get through that maintenance door before the ceiling turns this room into a grave.
Seth lunges toward the narrow maintenance gap, his boots splashing through the rising sludge. Above, a web of fissures spider-webs across the ceiling, the concrete slab bowing ominously as dust pours down like gray snow. The Stranger reaches the heavy metal door, his hand already gripping the rusted latch.
“Alright let's just get out of here”
FAILURE (Good Agility, rolled -2)

Seth
Dammit.
Seth pushes off the slick floor, but his boot catches on a protruding rebar spike, sending him sprawling into the viscous sludge. He hits the ground hard, the impact knocking the wind from his lungs. Above, the ceiling groans, a massive chunk of concrete detaching with a thunderous crack. The dust cloud billows out, obscuring the maintenance door and choking the small basement space.

Miller
Seth, get up! Don't let it pin you!

Stranger
The door is stuck. He’s going to get us all buried if he doesn't move his ass now.

Seth
Every breath tastes like pulverized stone. I have to find footing before the rest of this ceiling gives up the ghost.
“Alright let's try and find the way out this shithole”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +3)

Seth
Not today. Not in this grave.
Seth channels his momentum. Instead of fighting the slick sludge, he uses the slide to pivot, his hands slamming into a jagged chunk of concrete for leverage. With a surge of raw strength, he vaults over the rebar spike, his boots finding purchase on a stable foundation of floor tiles just as the ceiling above gives way completely.

Seth
Move! Through the maintenance door, now!

Miller
That's it! Keep moving!

Stranger
The path is open, don't stop for anything.

Seth
The debris is falling faster than I can track, but the gap in the wall is clear. If we don't hit the passage in the next three seconds, we're becoming part of the foundation.
The pressure from the ceiling collapse intensifies as the horde’s weight begins to breach the floor above, sending torrents of dust and concrete shards raining down.
“Move move move quick”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)
Seth launches himself into the narrow opening, his fingers catching the jagged edge of the maintenance frame to haul his body through the breach. As Miller and John scramble to follow, a secondary structural failure causes the ceiling to cave in entirely, burying the spot where Seth stood only a heartbeat ago in a mountain of rebar and pulverized concrete. The heavy maintenance door rattles violently as debris slams against its opposite side.

Stranger
Don't look back! The main tunnel is just ahead. Keep your heads down and run until you see the light.

Seth
The air is thick with grit and the sound of the floor above bowing under the weight of the dead. If the Stranger is leading us into a trap, I need to know now. But right now, the only thing that matters is putting distance between us and that collapse.

John
Seth, wait! The passage splits up here. Left or right?
