The Hilltop community is secure for the moment, but the air hangs heavy with the metallic tang of blood and damp soil. Seth eyes the horizon, knowing that safety here is as fragile as the mended fence. He signals to Miller and Kaley that they need to move, turning his back on the mud-slicked fields to head toward the abandoned rail depot three miles east.

Seth
We cannot stay here, Kaley. The Whisperers know the terrain too well. If we stay, we become targets in a shooting gallery. We head to the rail depot, consolidate our gear, and decide our next move.

Kaley
The depot is a death trap, Seth. It’s crawling with them, and the structures are rotting from the inside out. My people need these walls.

Miller
The walls aren't stopping them, Kaley. Seth’s right. We need a position where we can see them coming from miles away. The depot gives us the high ground. Pack what you can, and move.
The trek to the depot is silent, the only sound the crunch of gravel under heavy boots. They emerge into the sprawling rail yard just as a bruised, purple twilight descends. Rusting locomotives stand like hollowed-out behemoths in the tall grass, their iron skeletons groaning in the shifting wind.

The rail yard opens around Seth in a maze of rust and weeds. Ahead, a white food truck sits beside a dead loading bay, its side hatch half open, its tires sunk into mud.

Seth
Fresh tracks in the grass. Someone was here recently.
Elena slows near the truck, eyes darting to the shadows under the locomotives. Kaley hangs back with her shoulders tight, one hand already on her weapon.

Elena
Tell me that thing is empty and we can load it fast.
Seth gets close enough to see the hatch scraping against bent metal. Inside are stacked cartons, sealed coolers, and a slick smear of dark fluid across the floor.

Kaley
No way this is a clean find. The place stinks like rot and bait.
A low clatter answers from inside the truck, then a second one from the grass behind it. Something has been hiding under the chassis, and something else is moving in through the depot.

Elena
Seth, look at me. Do we strip the truck and risk the noise, or walk away before we get boxed in?
