Seth and John sprint through the thickening mist, the rhythmic tapping of the Whisperers echoing behind them as the first of the dead burst through the frozen undergrowth. They dive through a narrow mountain pass, the jagged rocks tearing at their clothes, and emerge onto a steep, descending slope overlooking a desolate, overgrown railway bridge.

Seth
We need to put distance between us and that tapping, John! Keep moving toward the bridge support!

John
I see a service ladder on the far pier. If we make that, we can cross the gap and pull it up behind us.

Seth
The wood is rotting, but it's our only way to cross the ravine before the herd traps us against the cliffside.
The snow kicks up into a frenzied swirl as the lead walkers clear the treeline, their gray, hollow eyes locked on the two men. Seth and John scramble down the treacherous scree, their boots sliding in the mud, as the bridge looms large and ominous through the freezing fog.

“And before we go what did I say about always leaving the group stick with me your my right hand man in this hell I need you”
SUCCESS (Fair Natural Leader, rolled -1)

Seth
Listen to me, John. We don't survive by splitting up. Stick to my side, be my right hand in this hell, and we make it out together. I need you focused.

John
I hear you, boss. My place is right behind you. Let's get across that ravine before they swarm the supports.

Seth
He's listening. If we can keep this discipline, we might actually build something worth living for once the immediate threat is gone.
The structure groans under the weight of the encroaching herd. The bridge deck, a rusted skeleton of iron and rotting timber, stretches across the chasm like a jagged tooth. A massive section of the guardrail snaps under the pressure of a falling walker, sending a shower of corroded metal fragments clattering into the abyss below. The gap between them and the service ladder is closing, and the wind is picking up, threatening to unbalance them on the slick, rusted plating.
“I'm not your boss you know I'm your friend also”
FAILURE (Fair Natural Leader, rolled -4)

Seth
I am not your boss, John. You know I am your friend.

John
Friend? Is that what we are? You talk like a drill sergeant and expect me to march like a soldier. Maybe you should spend less time giving orders and more time looking at where you are stepping.

Seth
The arrogance. I am trying to keep us alive, and he throws my leadership back in my face.
The rusted metal plates beneath their feet shift violently as a gust of wind tears across the ravine. The bridge, already fragile, tilts at a precarious angle. Seth’s attempt to reach out and stabilize John backfires; his boot slips on a patch of slick, frost-covered iron. He loses his footing, his arms windmilling as he stumbles toward the jagged, broken edge of the walkway. The gap between them widens as John recoils from the sudden movement, his eyes wide with panic.
“Tell him that he's my brother to call me that”
FAILURE (Good Willpower, rolled -2)

Seth
Listen, John... you are like a brother to me. I just need you to

John
A brother? You don't even know what that word means, Seth. You only know how to command.

Seth
He isn't listening. The bridge is giving way, and he thinks this is the time for a lecture.
Seth lunges forward, hoping to bridge the emotional distance, but his boot finds only slick, frozen steel. The metal screams under his weight, tearing loose from the rusted support beams. As Seth loses his balance, he instinctively reaches out to grab John, but his fingers only brush empty air. John recoils, stumbling backward as the support cable snaps with a thunderous crack, sending a spray of icy shrapnel into the air. Seth tilts dangerously over the yawning abyss, his center of gravity shifting past the point of no return.
“Tell him that he's my brother to call me that”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Seth
John, look at me! I meant what I said. You’re my brother. That isn't a command, it's the truth.

Seth
The bridge is groaning, he's scared, and I'm losing the floor. I need to make him reach back before the steel finishes tearing away.
The bridge shuddering violently forces a desperate shift. Seth’s boot loses its purchase, and he drops, his upper body swaying out over the freezing, dark ravine. His fingers stretch toward John, who stands rooted to the last stable section of corrugated steel, eyes wide with the realization that the bridge is shearing apart. The support cables whip through the air like lashes, showering the gap between them in rust and freezing wind. Seth maintains his focus, desperate to anchor himself to the man who refuses to see him as anything but an authority figure, even as the chasm pulls at his boots.
“Let's get back to the group”
FAILURE (Good Willpower, rolled -1)

John
I can’t! If I move, the whole thing goes. You’re too heavy, Seth!

Seth
He’s panicking. His eyes are darting toward the treeline, not the drop. He thinks he can wait this out.
The steel groans, a sound like a giant snapping its teeth. As Seth lunges toward the edge, the weight distribution shifts catastrophically. The metal plate beneath his boots peels away from the main structure with a screech of shearing rivets. Seth doesn't reach John; he plunges downward, his chest slamming hard against the jagged support beam below. His fingers claw at the slick, frost-covered metal, but he slips, his legs dangling into the freezing void as the secondary support beams buckle under the sudden impact. The bridge shudders, and the section John stands on tilts another ten degrees, forcing him to drop to his knees to keep from sliding into the abyss.
“Come on John we gotta get back to the group”
FAILURE (Good Willpower, rolled -1)

Seth
John, get your head in the game! We need to move, now!

John
I can’t move, Seth! Look at the supports, they’re snapping!

Seth
My hands are raw, scraping against the frozen steel as I try to find a purchase. My muscles are screaming, burning from the effort, but the metal just keeps bending. My voice is ragged, failing to carry over the wind and the screeching groan of the bridge. I'm losing him.
Seth lunges for a higher rivet, his fingers straining to grip the ice-crusted beam, but his boot slips on the sheared edge of the steel. With a jarring jolt, his body slides three feet further down the support. The metal plate beneath John’s feet screams, a high-pitched protest of shearing bolts that causes him to freeze entirely, his knuckles white as he grips the remaining railing. The bridge section tilts violently, dumping a shower of rusted bolts and loose gravel into the dark abyss below. Seth is left hanging by one hand, his arm vibrating with the strain, while the herd of walkers begins to swarm onto the near side of the bridge.
“Come on John we gotta get back to the group”
FAILURE (Good Willpower, rolled -1)

Seth
John, snap out of it! We have to move before the deck gives way completely!

John
My legs... they won't listen, Seth. Everything is slipping.

Seth
My grip is failing. The steel is slick with ice and my own sweat, and I can feel the rivets biting into my palm. I try to pull myself up, but the bridge gives a violent lurch, jerking my shoulder with a sickening pop. My attempt to rally him dies in my throat as the world tilts.
The rusted structural beam snaps with the sound of a gunshot. The jolt is too much for Seth to hold, and he drops another foot, his free hand clawing uselessly at the jagged steel. John, paralyzed by the sight of his friend slipping toward the drop, reaches out with a shaking hand, but his fingers grasp only thin air. The bridge section groans, a deep, metallic scream that echoes through the ravine as it swings downward, pinning Seth against the underside of the structure while the herd presses closer.
“Be careful move slow and steady”
FAILURE (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Seth
My muscles scream as I attempt to shift my weight, muscles coiling like wire to drag myself toward a safer anchor. But the rusted beam is a traitor. My boot finds purchase for a microsecond before the metal plate buckles under my weight, the screech of tearing steel vibrating deep into my marrow. I slip. My body slams against the narrow underside of the support, the breath driven from my lungs in a sharp, jagged gasp as my knuckles scrape raw against the abrasive surface. I am dangling by a single, desperate hold, staring down into the dark abyss where the trees look like jagged teeth waiting for my descent.

John
Seth, hold on! I am reaching, just give me your hand!

Seth
I can hear his boots scrambling on the tilting floorboards above me, but the structure is giving way fast. He is terrified, and I am running out of world to hold onto.
“Be careful move slow”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +0)

Seth
The screeching metal settles into a low, agonizing groan. I ignore the fire in my shoulders, forcing myself to freeze. Every sudden motion could be the tremor that sends this section plunging. I breathe slow, counting my heartbeats, keeping my center of gravity tight against the rusted iron. The bridge is tilting, but for now, it holds. I track the rhythm of the wind, watching John, waiting for the split second where the structure stabilizes enough for his reach. I am balanced on a razor edge, but I am steady.

John
I can see your grip slipping, Seth. Don't let go! I am coming down, just stay exactly where you are!

Seth
He is inching toward the gap, oblivious to the fact that his own weight is making the beam whine. If he missteps, we both drop.
“No go back I'll figure it out if you come here we both drop”
SUCCESS (Legendary Tactics, rolled -2)

Seth
No, stop! Go back, John. I have this, but if you step any closer, this whole section is going to sheer off. If you come here, we both drop.

Seth
I lock my eyes onto his, projecting every ounce of authority I have. He needs to see the conviction, not the desperation. I shift my weight, feeling the rusted beam flex against my palms. It is a gamble, but I cannot let him throw his life away for a doomed rescue. I spot a jagged reinforcing rod protruding from the main pier just three feet to my left. It looks solid, anchored deep into the stone. If I can swing, I can reach it.

John
I can’t just watch you fall, Seth!

Seth
He is hesitating, his boots skidding on the loose gravel. The walkers are pressing against the far railing, the bridge shuddering under their collective weight. I have to make my move before the vibration shakes us both into the gorge.
“Try and pull self up”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled -1)

Seth
The metal shrieks, a dying protest against the weight of the herd and the stress of my suspension. I clench my teeth, digging my boots into the side of the concrete pier for a sliver of leverage. Muscles burning, I heave upward, ignoring the searing pain in my shoulders as I haul my torso toward the jagged steel rod. With a final, guttural grunt, I clear the gap and hook my arm around the rusted reinforcement. My fingers find the rough, cool surface of the stone pillar and I scramble upward, slamming my chest against the flat ledge of the pier. I am clear of the beam, but the vibration of the walkers slamming into the bridge above is violent. Dust and loose concrete chunks shower down from the structure as it sways, tilting further into the abyss. I scramble to my feet, lungs burning, and reach a hand back toward the shivering edge.

Seth
The pier is stable enough for now! Jump, John, jump before the section gives way entirely!
“Help John then go back to group with John”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +4)
The bridge groans, a sound of tortured metal and shearing bolts, as the section beneath John sags toward the drop. Time seems to stretch, the roar of the undead pack overhead fading into a singular, rhythmic thrum of impending collapse. I lock eyes with him, my hand stretched out, fingers splayed and straining against the frigid air.

Seth
Do not look down! Look at my hand, John! Reach for me!
John’s eyes widen, his breath hitching as the metal beneath his boots ripples like water. He surges forward, his own hand lunging through the space between us. I shift my weight, planting my boots firmly on the stone, and snatch his wrist just as the platform snaps free from its moorings. With a violent, bone-jarring tug, I yank him upward, his body slamming against the concrete pier as the entire bridge span vanishes into the mist below. We sprawl together on the narrow, vibrating ledge, panting, the deafening crash of the bridge hitting the ravine floor echoing into silence.

Seth
He is safe. We have the ledge. Now, we move before the herd realizes the path is gone.
