The Empty Sawmill Ambush

The scent of damp sawdust and rotting pine needles chokes the air inside the sawmill. Seth stands at the threshold of the main warehouse, his fingers tracing the cold metal of his AK-47. Through the shattered skylights, weak sunlight cuts through the swirling dust, illuminating piles of rusted industrial blades and stacks of termite-eaten lumber.

Seth

Seth

The medical supplies should be near the loading bay, but something feels wrong. The silence is too thick, like a held breath.

Miller

Miller

It’s a tomb in here, Seth. We need to grab those crates and get back to the tower before dark.

Seth

Seth

Keep your eyes open. This place is a perfect ambush point for the Saviors.

A metallic scrape echoes from the rafters above. A shadow shifts behind a pile of lumber, and a man in a tattered coat steps into the light, clutching a rusted hatchet. It is the Stranger.

Stranger

Stranger

You came for the medicine, didn't you? It’s not here anymore. They took it all an hour ago.

Seth

Seth

He looks terrified. Is he a decoy, or just another victim of this godforsaken place?

What happened?

FAILURE (Great Reasoning, rolled -4)

The Empty Sawmill Ambush

Seth lunges forward, aiming to grab the man, but his boot catches on a jagged floorboard. He stumbles hard, his shoulder slamming into a stack of lumber. The impact sends a cascade of rotted wood tumbling, blocking his path.

Miller

Miller

Careful, Seth!

Stranger

Stranger

Stay back! I am telling the truth! They are still in the perimeter!

Seth

Seth

I let my guard drop for a second and now I have lost the initiative. This man is baiting me into a choke point.

The Stranger pivots, his movements frantic and uncoordinated. He points toward the loading bay entrance just as the distant, rhythmic tap of boots against gravel echoes through the open door. The Saviors are not just nearby; they are already stepping into the shadow of the warehouse.

Seth

Seth

I need to move, or we are going to be trapped between this guy and a patrol.

Seth

Seth

Who the hell are you with? Speak up, and if you are lying, I will leave you to them.

Stranger

Stranger

I... I am a runner for the Hilltop! I swear! They tracked me here from the junction!

The heavy thud of boots grows louder, synchronized and professional. Seth steadies his aim, the Desert Eagle feeling cold and heavy in his grip as he pivots toward the sound of the approaching patrol. The wood dust hanging in the air begins to settle, revealing the silhouettes of three armed men emerging from the loading bay shadows.

Seth

Seth

Hilltop runners do not usually lead Saviors to their own supply lines unless they are compromised. This guy is a liability, but he is my only bridge to whoever is actually out there.

Miller

Miller

Seth, they are closing the perimeter. We have five seconds before we are pinned against the back wall.

Seth

Seth

If I move now, I can flank the lead man, but I have to leave the Stranger exposed.

Savior 1

Drop the weapon! We saw you moving the crates, and the boss doesn't like scavengers touching his inventory.

Seth

Seth

His gear is too clean. This guy isn't just a guard, he is a lead scout. I need to move.

Seth lunges for a concrete support pillar, hoping to use the heavy dust for cover, but his boot catches on a protruding rebar stake. He sprawls forward, his shoulder slamming into the grit as his Desert Eagle skitters across the floor, sliding well out of his immediate reach. The three Saviors fan out, their rifles leveling instantly on his exposed back.

Stranger

Stranger

I told you! I have nothing to do with them!

Savior 2

Savior 2

Shut your mouth, rat. We will deal with you after we finish with the big guy.

Miller

Miller

Seth, get up! They are not waiting for us to surrender!

Seth

Seth

That stumble cost me everything. My weapon is gone, Miller is boxed in, and these bastards are salivating for a kill.

Savior 1

He is finished. Don't waste the rounds, just put him down slow.

Seth

Seth

Every move I make is just digging my own grave deeper. My lungs are burning, and the dust is choking me out.

The lead Savior steps forward, his rifle barrel tracing a slow, predatory arc toward Seth’s head. Miller lunges from behind a stack of rotting oak, a rusted metal pipe gripped tight, but Savior 3 shifts his aim effortlessly. The crack of a single warning shot rings out, splintering the wood inches from Miller’s face and forcing him to freeze mid-stride. Seth scrambles on all fours, his fingers brushing the cold, slick surface of the Desert Eagle, but his boot remains trapped by the heavy timber. He is pinned, weaponless, and entirely at the mercy of the barrel currently locking onto his temple.

Savior 2

Savior 2

See that, rat? That is what happens when you think you have allies.

If I can kick this beam loose, I might get a split second. If I miss, I’m dead.

My strength is nothing against this oak. I heave against the weight, but the timber doesn't even shudder. It holds firm, pinning my ankle like a trap.

Savior 1

Savior 1

Look at him struggle. It's like watching a worm on a hook.

Seth’s muscles cord as he lunges for the Desert Eagle, but his hand slips on the dusty floorboards. The Savior standing over him sneers, the muzzle of his rifle pressed firmly against Seth's temple, cold steel biting into skin. Miller screams in frustration, still pinned by the aim of Savior 3, his pipe clattering uselessly against the concrete. The warehouse ceiling groans under the weight of a dying storm, and the dust settling in the air creates a suffocating haze. Seth is paralyzed, his reach inches short of his weapon, while the Savior tightens his finger on the trigger.

Savior 1

Savior 1

Any last words for your friend, or should we save the noise for the walk back to the compound?

Seth

Seth

If I can't reach the gun, I have to reach them. I have to gamble on the chaos.

What's hilltop?

Seth

Seth

Hilltop? Is that your little sanctuary, your big promise of safety? You hold me at gunpoint for a community that doesn't even know you're here.

Savior 1

Savior 1

It’s a place for the weak to hide until we decide to stop feeding them. You don't need to know the location, you just need to stop breathing.

Seth

Seth

The Savior's grip is arrogant. He thinks the gun makes him a god, but he’s distracted by the Stranger's whimpering. I’ll aim for his lead foot with my boot. If I can disrupt his balance, the muzzle will drift.

Seth lunges, slamming his heel into the Savior’s shin with the force of a battering ram. The man grunts, his aim jerking violently upward as his knee buckles. The rifle fires, the crack of the discharge deafening in the confined space, sending wood splinters raining down from the rafters. The Desert Eagle lies mere inches from Seth’s fingertips, vibrating from the shock of the nearby shot.

Tell Miller to take the shot

Seth

Miller! Take the shot! Now!

Seth

Seth

He’s trained for this. He just needs the window.

Miller reacts instantly to the command, abandoning his cover as he whips the pipe aside and raises his own handgun. He doesn't hesitate, firing a precision shot that clips Savior 2 in the shoulder, spinning him away from his position. With the line of fire momentarily clear and the Saviors reeling from the sudden shift in momentum, Seth’s hand slams down onto the cold, textured grip of his Desert Eagle. He pulls it close, the weight of the steel offering a lethal sense of stability against the encroaching chaos.

Seth

You're done.

Seth pulls the Desert Eagle’s trigger, the thunderous retort echoing against the corrugated metal walls. The bullet finds Savior 1 square in the chest, sending him crumpling into a heap of sawdust, his weapon clattering uselessly against the concrete floor. However, the victory comes at a cost. In a final, spasmodic motion, Savior 1 kicks out, his boot catching Seth hard in the ribs. The wind leaves Seth’s lungs in a sharp gasp, his vision swimming as the dull ache of bruised bone ripples through his torso. Savior 3, witnessing his comrade go down, screams in fury and pivots his rifle toward Seth, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Seth

Seth

Stay up. Don't you dare go down now.

Pick his gun up and finish him then attack the rest of them with it

Critical hit for 3 damageSavior 1 is down

Seth levels the Desert Eagle, his finger snapping back with a deafening roar. The bullet strikes Savior 1 square in the chest, the impact force sending him stumbling backward. He collapses into the mound of sawdust, his chest a ruin, eyes glassing over as he expires instantly. The dying man’s heel hooks a loose pallet, sending it skidding toward Seth’s legs with bruising force.

Savior 3

Savior 3

You son of a bitch!

Savior 3 bellows in rage, his rifle barrel whipping around to lock onto Seth’s head. Panic flares behind the stranger’s eyes as he scrambles for the exit, while Miller lunges from behind a crate to distract the remaining gunmen. Seth remains pinned, his ribcage throbbing with sharp, hot pain as he struggles to regain his footing.

Seth

Seth

Breathe through the pain. Get the next one before he gets you.

Pick up rifle then light them up and have miller get one of are group members to help

Critical hit for 6 damageSavior 3 is down

Seth lunges from his kneeling position, his fingers locking onto the discarded rifle near his boots as he pivots. He fires a single, controlled burst. The rounds punch through Savior 3’s shoulder and chest, slamming him against the splintered wall of the loading bay. The man’s rifle clatters to the floorboards as he slides downward, a crimson smear marking his final descent into silence.

Miller

Miller

Seth, the back exit is clear, but we need to move before more of them hear the gunfire!

The warehouse grows deathly quiet, save for the ticking of cooling metal and the frantic, shallow breathing of the Stranger, who stands frozen near the door. Seth remains on one knee, his chest heaving with every ragged breath. His hand tightens around the grip of the salvaged rifle, his knuckles white against the dark polymer.

Seth

Seth

Two down. If there is a perimeter guard, they are already on their way. Keep your head clear and finish the job.

The Stranger looks terrified, but he knows these woods better than I do. If he tries to bolt, I'll have to put him down, but for now, he's a necessary guide.

Seth shoves the rifle into Miller’s grip, his own hands returning to his Desert Eagle. He gestures sharply toward the warehouse side door, his eyes scanning the gloom outside for more silhouettes. The Stranger nods frantically, stepping away from the wall to join the pair. They move toward the threshold, the silence of the forest pressing in against them, heavy and suffocating. A sharp, rhythmic snapping of dry twigs echoes from the tree line nearby, freezing them in their tracks.
