Escape to the Subterranean Sanctuary

The logging depot descends into chaos as the gunfire echoes against the stacks of timber. Seth realizes the perimeter is lost. With the horde surely alerted by the blast, he grabs Scout and signals for Miller and John to vacate toward the nearby water-filled quarry pits.

Seth

Seth

The noise is a death sentence. We cannot hold the depot against the rot and the living.

The group abandons the yard, sprinting through the mud toward the jagged limestone cliffs bordering the abandoned quarry. They dive into a narrow, overgrown maintenance tunnel hidden behind thick briars, putting distance between themselves and the carnage of the depot.

John

John

Keep moving! If they follow us into the dark, we have the home field advantage.

They emerge inside a cavernous, flooded pumping station. The air is stagnant, smelling of rust and cold water. Seth scans the gloom, his rifle leveled at the echoing shadows, knowing they have successfully traded their trapped position for a fragile, subterranean sanctuary.

Escape to the Subterranean Sanctuary
Seth

Seth

Days of scavenging and constant movement have finally filled in the patches on my jaw. The coarse, dark stubble has grown into a thick, rugged survivalist beard, finally hiding the constant tension in my jaw. It feels like armor.

John

John

We are safe for the moment, Seth. But this water looks deep. Are you sure we can navigate these tunnels?

Miller

Miller

The maps said the maintenance catwalks run along the perimeter of the reservoir. We just need to find the access ladder.

Seth

Seth

My boots are heavy, and the scent of stagnant water makes my stomach churn, but we are out of the line of fire. I need to focus. If we can secure this station, we might actually have a chance at establishing a perimeter that holds.

Suddenly, a rhythmic metallic clanking resonates from deep within the station. A flicker of movement dances against the far wall near the main water intake valve, signaling that someone, or something, is already inside.

+ Scene Quest Added

Investigate the source of the noise in the pumping station

We need to make it too the farm house it's safe there

SUCCESS (Legendary Tactics, rolled +1)

Escape to the Subterranean Sanctuary
Seth

Seth

The rhythmic clanking is deliberate. Someone is moving through the pipes. I cannot let them hold this ground. It is too valuable.

Seth

Seth

Listen, we are not staying here. The farmhouse is secure, defensible, and has better sightlines than this wet hole. We move to the farmhouse now.

John

John

The farmhouse? That is miles of open field, Seth. We will be exposed the entire way.

Miller

Miller

He is right, John. If we take the service tunnel exit behind those cooling fans, we bypass the main gate entirely. It is a straight shot through the treeline.

Seth

Seth

My logic is sound. If I move us now, we catch them off balance while they are busy tampering with the valves. I have mapped this route in my head for weeks. We strike fast, take the high ground, and leave this station to whoever is hiding in the shadows.

Seth points toward the rusted service grate as a heavy shadow shifts behind a cluster of pipes, revealing the glint of a weapon raised in the dim light.

+ Scene Quest Added

Escape the pumping station ambush

We need to find a farm house to rest and lie low for awhile

SUCCESS (Legendary Tactics, rolled +1)

Escape to the Subterranean Sanctuary
Seth

Seth

We take the tunnel. Move, now. We do not engage unless they force our hand.

Seth

Seth

The shadow is moving faster than a looter. That stance is disciplined. This is not just some scavenger picking for scrap.

Miller

Miller

I am already at the grate. Get through, Seth. I will cover the rear.

John

John

If we make it to the farmhouse by dawn, we can set up a perimeter before the light hits the fields.

Seth

Seth

My instincts are screaming that we are being hunted. I need to keep Miller and John focused on the exit, not the threat. If I can draw the intruder’s fire toward the cooling fans, we buy ourselves the seconds we need to vanish into the darkness of the tunnels.

Seth lunges toward the service grate, his boots splashing through the shallow, stagnant water, while behind him, a suppressed gunshot echoes off the concrete, the muzzle flash illuminating the barrel of a rifle leveled by an unseen, armored figure emerging from the steam.

Close myself with the enemy to buy time for my group and tell them to go to the farmhouse if I make it I'll meet them there

SUCCESS (Legendary Tactics, rolled -1)

Escape to the Subterranean Sanctuary
Seth

Seth

Go. Get to the farmhouse. I am going to buy you the space you need. If I am not there by dawn, you keep moving.

Seth

Seth

My heart is hammering against my ribs, but my hands are rock steady. Tactical awareness is everything now.

Seth pivots, disregarding his own path to safety as he charges headlong toward the armored silhouette. His movement is a blur of calculated aggression, closing the distance before the intruder can cycle their bolt. He slams his shoulder into the attacker, driving them back against the intake pipes with a heavy, metallic crunch that vibrates through the station. The rifle clatters into the black, shallow water as Seth locks his fingers into the intruder's vest, pinning them firmly against the vibrating machinery.

John

John

Seth, no! We stay together!

Miller

Miller

Forget him, John! We have to move before more of them show up!

Seth

Seth

Stay focused on the exit. Don't look back.

Your my brother John I'll see you at the farm

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Escape to the Subterranean Sanctuary
Seth

Seth

You are my brother, John. I will see you at the farm. Now go!

Seth

Seth

The water is freezing, but the adrenaline keeps the cold at bay. I need to keep this intruder occupied or we all die here.

Seth shoves the armored figure harder, his boot finding purchase against a rusted pipe. The impact causes a surge of pressurized steam to hiss from a nearby valve, obscuring the ceiling in a thick, blinding fog. The intruder grunts, struggling to reach for a sidearm, but Seth’s iron grip on their tactical vest keeps them pressed firmly against the vibrating wall. Above the roar of the machinery, the sound of the exit grate groaning open echoes through the chamber. Miller and John are almost out. Seth tightens his jaw, his gaze locked onto the intruder’s visor, preparing for the next desperate phase of the struggle. The air grows hot and thick with moisture as the pipe rupture intensifies.

Seth lunges, slamming his palm into the intruder’s exposed throat plating and driving a sharp knee into the man's midsection with a sickening crunch of armor. The fighter sags instantly, the fight leaving his body as he slumps against the pulsating pipes. The attacker tries to lunge back with a frantic, desperate swing of his blade, but the blow goes wide, carving harmlessly into the steam-filled air before his body goes limp against the grating.

Why... you...

Seth

Seth

He's finished. I need to get to that grate before the rest of these bastards realize their friend isn't coming back.

The intruder slides down the wall, his head lolling as his vision fades into the industrial haze. Behind the thick shroud of white vapor, the clanging of the exit grate persists, a frantic rhythm calling Seth to abandon the kill and vanish into the tunnels. The heat in the room rises, the rupture in the overhead pipe whistling like a dying beast.
