Return to the Burning Sanctuary

The heavy gates of Alexandria creak open, revealing the smoke-stained streets that are no longer the sanctuary Seth remembered. A thick, oppressive fog clings to the ground, muffling the distant cries of panic that drift from the central plaza. The air tastes of burnt rubber and stale rot, a sharp contrast to the salty breeze of the coast. Seth stands at the threshold, his remaining hand tightening on the grip of his heavy revolver as he surveys the devastation.

The fire at the shipping terminal was a distraction. They knew I was coming, and they hit the heart of the community before I could even set foot back inside.

Shane

Seth! Keep your head down. We don't know if the streets are clear or if the Saviors are still patrolling the inner wall.

We move to the armory. If they haven't taken the high ground yet, we can turn this whole settlement into a kill box.

A shadow flickers near the remains of the watchtower, and the rhythmic sound of whistling begins to weave through the fog, growing louder with every heartbeat.

It is not the Saviors. The whistling is a mimicry, a taunt to lure us toward the plaza. Those explosives were planted by the Whisperers long before we even left the gates. They have been watching us since the terminal, waiting for us to return to a home already hollowed out from the inside.

Get down, Shane! It’s a trap, not a patrol. Look at the shadows against the fence. Those aren’t Saviors. They’re wearing the dead.

Seth lunges toward a cluster of heavy shipping crates, sliding across the grit just as a series of muffled detonations ripple through the interior courtyard. Shards of wood and pulverized brick erupt into the air, masking the silent, skin-masked figures emerging from the fog like ghosts stepping out of the afterlife.

God help us, they're everywhere!

If I can pin them between the gate and the inner wall, I can cut off their retreat, but we are outnumbered ten to one.
