Ambush in the Kingdom Mist

Seth stands amidst the swirling, cold mist of the outer Kingdom farmlands. The wooden grave marker for Carl is nearly swallowed by the vapor, a stark reminder of the cost of their journey. A low, rhythmic tapping sound echoes from the dense rows of withered corn, vibrating through the damp earth.

Seth

Seth

This isn't a random encounter. The Whisperers are herding the dead again, and we are right in the center of their funnel.

Miller

Miller

Miller draws his sidearm, scanning the mist with tense, darting eyes.

Miller

Miller

Seth, the sound is getting closer. We need to reach the main wall before they cut us off from the perimeter.

Seth

Seth

Seth grips his AK-47, his thumb resting near the safety as he pivots toward the source of the tapping.

Seth

Seth

Don't shoot unless you see a mask. We move toward the armory gate, steady and quiet. If they want a fight in this fog, we give them one they won't forget.

The mist suddenly parts, revealing the dark, jagged outline of a masked figure standing motionless between the grave and the settlement walls.

Reach the armory gate

As a pack of deer run past us and I say to myself damn this world's got me turning 247

Seth

Seth

This world has me on edge, twitching at every shadow. I need to keep my head, even when the air feels like it's trying to choke me.

A herd of panicked deer erupts from the corn, a thundering wave of fur and hooves that tears through the mist. The sudden chaos forces the masked figure to flinch, their head whipping toward the crashing noise for a split second.

Seth

Seth

Seth drops to a crouch, his eyes locked on the momentary opening in the figure's stance.

Seth

Seth

Now, Miller. He's distracted. Move to the tree line.

Miller

Miller

Miller moves with fluid, frantic precision, his pistol still leveled at the masked figure.

Miller

Miller

I've got the flank. Don't let him get behind us.

The masked figure recovers instantly, raising a long, serrated blade, their body tense and coiled to spring forward as the last of the deer vanish into the gloom.

+ Scene Quest Added

Survive the encounter with the masked figure

As the figure reveals himself he used to be a red Talon soldier and says he's probably the last because the last main base they were holding was destroyed by The whispers and all the rest of the men were picked up besides him he then shows me his dog tags he says he just wants the place to lay low

Seth

Stand down! I see the tags. Red Talon, right?

The masked figure hesitates, the serrated blade trembling slightly before he lowers it toward the mud. He reaches beneath his tunic, fumbling with a blood-stained cord until he produces a set of worn, metallic dog tags. He tosses them toward Seth. They land with a dull thud in the damp soil.

Seth:0

The Whispers razed the compound. I crawled out from the smoke of the last holdout. I am all that remains of my unit. I just want somewhere to disappear.

Seth

Seth

One survivor against a hoard of psychos. If he is telling the truth, he might be a heavy hitter to have at our backs. If he is lying, he is a threat behind our perimeter.

Seth

Seth

If you want to lay low, you keep that blade sheathed. You follow us to the walls, you keep your head down, and you do exactly what I say. Do we have an understanding?

+ New Item Acquired

Red Talon dog tags

His dog tags say Morgan jones he is a black male that uses a speared staff

SUCCESS (Fair Diplomacy, rolled -2)

Former Soldier

Former Soldier

Morgan Jones. That is my name. The staff is all I have left. I will follow your lead, provided we are moving toward safety and away from those... those monsters in the masks.

Morgan slowly shifts his grip on the wooden staff, rotating the weapon so the point faces the soft earth rather than Seth. The mist clings to his coat, dampening the sound of the wind as he waits for an order.

Seth

Seth

A former soldier with a spear and a name like that. He knows how to move in the quiet. He could be useful, but I need to know if he has the discipline to stay sharp when the Whisperers inevitably track our scent.

Seth

Seth

Safety is a relative term in these woods, Morgan. We move now. Keep your distance from Miller, and do not make a sound until I give the word. If we run into a patrol, you handle the flanks.

Seth turns toward the tree line, checking his sidearm one last time as the distant sound of snapping twigs ripples through the clearing.

Morgan reveals to Seth he has been traveling alone ever since he lost his son and that he did go down a dark path for awhile but changed his ways he wants to help people now and I think he would be the perfect person for the kingdom

FAILURE (Fair Diplomacy, rolled -4)

Ambush in the Kingdom Mist
Morgan Jones

Morgan Jones

I lost him, Seth. My son. When the world fell, I... I wasn't the man I am now. I did things. Dark things. I just want to make up for the blood on my hands. To protect what's left.

Seth

Seth

He's talking about his son like it's an excuse. The way he says it, there's a wildness still buried in there. If he lost control before, what happens when he hits the breaking point? I can't trust a man who admits he's gone dark.

Seth

Seth

Save the history lesson for someone who cares, Morgan. You talk of redemption while you hold a spear like you’re ready to gut the next person who annoys you. Keep your head down or get out of my sight.

Morgan stumbles back, his knuckles white against the wooden staff. The air grows cold as he looks at Seth, his eyes shifting from penitent to hardened. He doesn't move to follow. Instead, he shifts his stance, bracing his feet into the mud.

Morgan Jones

Morgan Jones

I misjudged this one. He isn't a leader. He's a tyrant in the making.

Morgan reveals to Seth he has been traveling alone ever since he lost his son and that he did go down a dark path for awhile but changed his ways he wants to help people now and I think he would be the perfect person for the kingdom

FAILURE (Fair Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Miller

Miller

Seth... maybe ease up. He's trying to talk.

Morgan Jones

Morgan Jones

You don't know the first thing about saving people. You just want soldiers to throw into the meat grinder. If that's the Kingdom, then it's just another grave waiting to be filled.

Seth

Seth

You're standing in the mud telling me how to run my business while my people are out there bleeding? You want to help? Then shut your mouth and move, or get left behind with the walkers.

The atmosphere turns brittle. Morgan’s jaw tightens, his previous plea for redemption vanishing behind a mask of cold resentment. He drops his staff into the mud with a wet thud, his hands curling into white-knuckled fists. He doesn't move forward toward the walls. He stays rooted, his stance shifting from defensive to aggressive.

Seth

Seth

He's not going to fall in line. I pushed too hard, and now I've got a wild card sitting right on our flank.

Morgan reveals to Seth he has been traveling alone ever since he lost his son and that he did go down a dark path for awhile but changed his ways he wants to help people now and I think he would be the perfect person for the kingdom so I tell him about it and he agrees he's sick of running and he wants to help people

SUCCESS (Fair Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Morgan Jones

Morgan Jones

I lost him. My son. And after that... I drifted, I went dark, I let the madness take the driver's seat. I’m done running from it, but I’m not here to be another body in your trenches.

Seth

Seth

Listen, I’m building a life, not a graveyard. The Kingdom is worth fighting for, and I don't need a grunt. I need someone who knows the cost of losing everything and still chooses to stand up. Help me keep this place alive, and we’ll have a future.

Seth

Seth

He's been through the ringer. If I can get him to channel that pain into something productive, he's exactly the kind of veteran this community needs.

Morgan Jones

Morgan Jones

I’m tired of the dust, Seth. If this place is real... lead the way. I'm in.

The tension in Morgan's shoulders evaporates. He reaches down into the damp earth and retrieves his staff, the mud sliding off the wood as he stands tall. He nods once, a silent acknowledgment of the new path.
