Shadows in the Textile Mill

Dust motes dance in the shafts of dying light piercing the high, broken windows of the old textile mill. The air is thick with the scent of stagnant lint and ancient machinery. A massive, bent sheet of corrugated metal lies slumped across the central aisle, humming as the wind outside rattles the structure. Suddenly, the overhead fluorescent light flickers, buzzes, and dies, plunging the warehouse into long, jagged shadows.

Stella

Stella

- The air here feels heavy, like the mill is waiting for us to make a mistake.

Seth

Seth

- Keep your eyes moving. If this place is as abandoned as it looks, we might be the only ones breathing in here.

A rhythmic clanking sound echoes from the far end of the hall, near the rusted spinning frames. A silhouette, gaunt and hunched, shifts behind a pile of rotted burlap sacks. Seth draws his Desert Eagle, his eyes scanning the gloom for the source of the movement.

Seth

Seth

- Something is definitely here. I just need to know if it’s a scavenger or something that wants to eat us.

Seth

Seth

- Stay low. Behind the crates.

Seth presses a firm hand against Stella’s shoulder, guiding her into the shadows of a heavy packing crate. His movements are fluid, silent, and precise. He slides his body into a crouch, his weight balanced perfectly for a sudden shift or a rapid draw. Every muscle in his frame is tight, his breathing shallow and controlled. He gestures for her to remain dead silent, his gaze tracking the clanking sound with predator-like intensity. The silhouette by the spinning frames jerks, momentarily freezing in place, as if the creature senses the shift in the room's atmosphere.

Seth

Seth

- It stopped moving. It knows something changed, but it doesn't know where we are yet. I need to make the first move before it decides to rush the light.

The creature lets out a wet, guttural rattle that vibrates through the cold air.

+ Scene Quest Added

Survive the encounter with the creature

There are no such thing as stronger zombies than the walkers so this must be human

SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +2)

Shadows in the Textile Mill
Seth

Seth

- That is no walker. It is holding a pry bar. Stay behind me, Stella.

Seth

Seth

- The way it moves is too calculated. It is bracing against the frame, testing the floorboards. Just another scavenger trying to carve out a piece of this hell for himself. I need to make sure he stays down if he turns this way.

The figure steps partially into a patch of moonlight filtering through a jagged skylight. It is a man, gaunt and shivering, his eyes darting frantically toward the sound of Seth’s movement. He raises the rusted iron bar, his knuckles white, and his breathing is jagged and uneven. He is not looking for supplies anymore. He is looking for a way out, and he looks terrified enough to strike at anything that moves.

Stella

Stella

- Seth, he looks like he has seen a ghost. Should we just talk to him?

Seth

Seth

- Talk to him? He has a weapon and he is cornered. That is the most dangerous kind of animal.

+ Scene Quest Added

Neutralize or evade the desperate scavenger

Ask stella if she has any long range weapons

Seth

Seth

- He is vibrating with adrenaline. If I try to negotiate, his first reaction will be to swing that iron bar. I need to keep my options open and ensure we have an advantage if this goes south.

Seth

Seth

- Stella, tell me you brought your hunting rifle. Do you have a line of sight if I need to move in?

Stella

Stella

- It is slung on my back, but I do not want to start a bloodbath, Seth. He looks like he is barely holding it together.

Seth

Seth

- That is exactly why we cannot afford to be soft. If he swings that bar, he will not aim for our armor.

Seth eases his stance, keeping the Desert Eagle lowered but ready, while his eyes scan the rafters above the scavenger. He watches Stella adjust her grip, her rifle barrel shifting slightly as she looks for an opening that does not involve ending a human life. The scavenger lets out a ragged, high-pitched whimper, his gaze locking onto the metallic glint of Seth’s weapon.
