Confrontation at the Cellar Hatch

Dust motes dance in the sliver of light cutting through the rotting roof of the supply shed. Seth stands amidst the clutter, his boots crunching on broken glass. The smell of damp wood and rusted metal hangs heavy in the stagnant air.

Seth

Seth

Sarah is supposed to be here. If the Saviors found her, the blood trail would already be cold. I need to move deeper into the lower levels before the light fails completely.

A rhythmic thudding vibrates against the floorboards beneath his feet. Someone is moving in the crawlspace, but it is too heavy, too deliberate to be a child. Seth draws his Desert Eagle, the metal cold and reassuring in his grip, as he pivots toward the cellar hatch.

Seth

Seth

Come out. Now. I know you're down there.

The hatch creaks upward, revealing a pair of boots caked in fresh, wet mud. A stranger emerges, eyes wide, gripping a sharpened rebar spike.

And then says sorry I thought you were a savior or whisper can't be to careful now days he said I say who are you he replies and says names Tyson and he puts his hand out to shake mine. it's a medium fit black man

SUCCESS (Fair Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Confrontation at the Cellar Hatch
Seth

Seth

Sorry. I thought you were a Savior or a Whisperer. Can't be too careful nowadays. Who are you?

Tyson

Tyson

Names Tyson.

The man stands fully in the shed, his muscles tense but his posture open. He wipes his palm on his trousers and extends a hand toward Seth, the rebar spike discarded in the dirt near the hatch.

Seth

Seth

He doesn't look like he’s running with a crew. But out here, everyone has a story, and most of them end in a shallow grave. I should see if he knows anything about Sarah, but I can't let my guard down yet.

Seth

Seth

I'm Seth. You alone, Tyson? Or do you have people waiting in the dark?

Do you wanna come with us we are at a place called the kingdom maybe you heard of it?

SUCCESS (Fair Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Confrontation at the Cellar Hatch
Tyson

Tyson

The Kingdom? I’ve heard whispers of a place with walls that actually hold. I’ve been living out of this cellar for weeks, scavenging what I can from the Saviors' scraps. If you’re offering a way out of this hole, I’m listening.

Seth

Seth

We're building something real there. A chance to stop running. You have a skill set, Tyson? We need people who can keep their heads when things go south.

Seth

Seth

He seems desperate enough to be honest. If he can pull his weight, he might be an asset. But I still need to know if he’s seen Sarah. I can't bring a wild card into the Kingdom without vetting him first.

Seth

Seth

Before we go, I’m looking for someone. A woman, maybe seen her around here recently? She’s the reason I’m in this shed.

He says I think I heard people arguing from outside the house in the woods sounded like a girl and two guys I give Tyson a gun and we quickly go to investigate the woods and find Sarah and two scavengers trying to rape her the are pinning her down but she manages to stab one on the eye killing him instantly when we get there then strangles the other one to death and beats his face over and over again while angry emotionally broken and kinda scared

Critical hit for 6 damageScavenger 1 struck back for 4 damage

Confrontation at the Cellar Hatch

Seth bursts through the treeline, his Desert Eagle bucking in his grip. The first round tears through Scavenger 1, sending the man stumbling back into the dirt. Before Seth can fully recover, the second scavenger lunges, his jagged blade carving a stinging furrow into Seth’s side. Seth grunts, teeth gritted against the sudden warmth of blood blooming on his jacket, but he stays on his feet.

Across the clearing, the scene turns visceral. Sarah has pinned the first attacker, her hands closing like iron clamps around his throat. Her expression is a hollow, terrifying mask of survival as she bashes the man's head into the hard earth with rhythmic, desperate force. The silence of the woods is broken only by the wet thuds of impact and Sarah’s ragged, uneven breathing.

Seth

Seth

My god. She’s gone past the point of no return. I came here to save a friend, but I think I’m watching someone else be born in the blood of these bastards. If I step in now, she might turn that rage on me.

Survive the scavenger ambush

Let her kill them

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Confrontation at the Cellar Hatch

Seth lowers the Desert Eagle, the metal cooling against his palm. He watches in silence as the life fades from the scavenger beneath Sarah. The forest remains suffocatingly still, save for the rhythmic, heavy heaving of Sarah's chest. She doesn't look at him, her gaze fixed entirely on the mess she has made of the ground.

Seth

Seth

The second one is still breathing. If I let her continue, she loses whatever piece of humanity she has left. But if I stop her, she’ll know I’m judging her for the very thing that kept us alive.

Sarah abruptly freezes, her knuckles white and bruised, her head cocking slightly as she hears the distinct, mechanical click of a safety disengaging from the dense brush behind her. A third scavenger, unnoticed until now, steps into the clearing with a handgun leveled directly at her back.

Confrontation at the Cellar Hatch
Seth

Seth

Sarah, are you okay?

Seth

Seth

I need to pull her back before she loses herself.

As I reach out to wrap my arms around her, I stumble over a twisted root. My boots lose their purchase in the slick mud, and I crash hard onto my side, missing her entirely. The moment of comfort shatters. Sarah flinches away from my outstretched hand, her eyes wild and unfocused, seeing me only as another threat to be neutralized. She swings a heavy, blood-slicked rock in a wide arc, missing my head by an inch.

"Don't touch me!"

Sarah

Sarah

He’s just like the rest of them. He wants to see if I’ll break.

The scavenger behind her takes a half-step forward, his pistol steady. I am sprawled in the dirt, weaponless and exposed, watching the barrel tilt toward the back of Sarah’s head.

Say are you okay Sarah then hug her reassuring her she's okay

FAILURE (Fair Diplomacy, rolled +0)

The mud acts like a trap. As I lunge to pull Sarah back, my boot catches, and my body hits the forest floor with a sickening thud. The breath leaves my lungs, and for a heartbeat, everything is just grey sky and the smell of wet earth.

Seth

Seth

I missed her. She’s going to turn that rock on me, or worse, she’s going to get shot.

Sarah spins, her knuckles white around the jagged stone. Her chest heaves, and she stares down at me with an intensity that borders on madness.

"I said don't touch me!"

Behind her, the scavenger’s grin is thin and cruel. His finger tightens on the trigger of the handgun, the barrel tracking Sarah’s temple. I scramble to find my footing, but the slick, churned mud sends me sliding backward. My hand finds only empty air instead of my holster.

Seth

Seth

Think. There is no time to reach the gun. I have to move now.

Protect Sarah from the scavenger

Say are you okay Sarah then hug her reassuring her she's okay

FAILURE (Fair Diplomacy, rolled +2)

Seth

Seth

Sarah, stop. Look at me. It is over, you are safe.

The words die in my throat. She does not even blink. Instead, she draws back the stone, her eyes wild and fixated on my forehead rather than the threat behind her. My attempt to bridge the gap only makes her flinch, her boot catching my shoulder as she pivots away from my reach. The kindness I try to project is lost in the roar of blood in my ears.

Seth

Seth

She is not hearing me. She is still fighting the dead in her head.

The scavenger hears the movement. He shifts his aim, the handgun barrel swiveling from Sarah’s temple to center on my chest. A dark, jagged smile pulls at his lips as he prepares to finish us both. I am grounded in the muck, my hands clawing for purchase, but I am too slow. The hammer of his weapon clicks backward, a tiny, metallic sound that carries the weight of a funeral shroud.

Say are you okay Sarah then hug her reassuring her she's okay

FAILURE (Fair Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Seth

Seth

Sarah, are you okay? Please, let me help you.

I lunge forward, desperate to pull her into a protective embrace, but my boots slide violently on the slick, blood-soaked earth. My momentum fails me entirely. Instead of a steadying hug, I slam hard into her side, knocking her off balance. The rock flies from her hand, disappearing into the dark brush as she stumbles backward with a sharp, terrified cry.

Seth

Seth

I made it worse. She thinks I am one of them now.

The scavenger’s laughter rings out, sharp and discordant, as he watches my pathetic stumble. He doesn't even bother to hide his amusement while his finger tightens on the trigger. He isn't rushing; he knows I am pinned, struggling to regain my footing in the mud while Sarah is reeling from my clumsy interference. He shifts his stance, bracing for the recoil, his eyes locked on mine with a sickening, predatory gleam. The forest goes deathly quiet, waiting for the crack of the hammer.

Say are you okay Sarah then hug her reassuring her she's okay and we'll get her home then proceed to take her to the kingdom

FAILURE (Fair Diplomacy, rolled -2)

Scavenger

Scavenger

Too late for the touchy-feely act, hero.

The scavenger’s grin widens as he tracks my awkward sprawl. My attempt to pull Sarah to safety only served to isolate her, leaving her wide open and stumbling in the muck. I am splayed across the mire, fingers clawing uselessly at the wet earth, eyes wide with the realization of my own tactical failure.

Seth

Seth

I've put a target on her back. I need to move, now.

I lunged for her, but my grip failed and I shoved her directly into the line of fire. She is reeling, gasping for breath, eyes darting between me and the barrel of the gun. The scavenger shifts his weight, his finger curling firmly against the steel trigger, clearly savoring the finality of this moment. The world has narrowed down to the black hole at the end of his barrel, pointed dead center at my exposed chest while Sarah flails in the background, her face a mask of primal, shattered instinct.

Say are you okay Sarah then hug her reassuring her she's okay and we'll get her home then proceed to take her to the kingdom

FAILURE (Fair Diplomacy, rolled -2)

Seth

Seth

Sarah, it's okay... look at me, we're going home.

Seth

Seth

Why is she flinching? I just need to get her to breathe.

I reach out, desperate to pull her into a protective embrace, but my movement is sloppy and frantic. Sarah doesn't see a rescuer. She sees a blur of motion, a threat encroaching on her space. She lets out a guttural, jagged cry and shoves my chest with both palms, slamming me back into the mire. My reach misses her entirely, and my face hits the sludge hard. The scavenger laughs, a sharp, barking sound that cuts through the woods. He doesn't pull the trigger yet. He shifts his stance, enjoying the sight of us scrambling like panicked animals in the dirt. Sarah scrambles backward on all fours, her eyes wild and unfocused, completely detached from the man leveling the handgun at my head.

Seth

Seth

I've lost control of the situation. I'm just bait now.

It's okay Sarah your okay now then hug her

FAILURE (Fair Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Seth

Seth

Sarah, listen to me, you're safe now!

I lunge forward, arms open to pull her into a desperate embrace. My fingers brush her jacket, but the moment I touch her, she recoils as if I'm searing her skin.

Seth

Seth

She isn't here. She's lost in the red.

Scavenger

Scavenger

Look at them. Pathetic.

The scavenger cackles, his finger tightening on the trigger as I stumble. Sarah swings the rock in a panicked, wide arc, catching my shoulder instead of the air. The impact knocks me sideways, sending me sprawling back into the thick, freezing mud. My desert eagle is buried somewhere in the muck, completely out of reach. I look up, breathless and exposed, watching as the scavenger levels his aim squarely at my chest, his expression twisting into a cruel, jagged grin. Sarah has retreated further, curled into a ball, eyes darting at the shadows instead of the man holding our lives in his hands.

Say I'm sorry Sarah are you alright

FAILURE (Fair Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Seth

Seth

I'm sorry, Sarah... are you alright?

The words choke in my throat, sounding pathetic even to my own ears. Sarah flinches at the sound of my voice, her eyes widening in genuine terror as if I am the monster she fears most. She presses her back against a slick tree trunk, her knuckles white as she grips the rock, shaking violently.

Seth

Seth

My attempt to deescalate just pushed her further into the abyss.

Scavenger

Scavenger

Too late for apologies, hero. Watch your friend watch you bleed.

He shifts his weight, the handgun steadying as he aims for my center mass. The rain starts to fall harder now, turning the churned earth into a slick, bottomless pit. I try to scramble, but my boots find no purchase in the muck. The scavenger smiles, his finger curling around the trigger guard, the click of the safety disengaging cutting through the silence of the woods. My hands grasp at nothing but cold mud.

Say I'm sorry Sarah are you alright

FAILURE (Fair Diplomacy, rolled -4)

Scavenger

Scavenger

Stuttering won't save you.

The scavenger’s grin widens as my boot skids uselessly against a submerged root. I lunge for his ankles, but the mud is like thick grease, dragging me down instead of providing leverage. My failure to get a foothold leaves me sprawling, chest-down and exposed in the muck.

Seth

Seth

I'm a target. I'm literally just waiting for the bullet.

Sarah lets out a primal, wordless shriek. Instead of dropping the rock, she surges forward, stumbling toward the scavenger with the stone raised high, her movements jagged and feral. She isn't thinking, she's just reacting to the nightmare unfolding before us. The scavenger’s eyes flick toward her, his weapon barrel twitching in the rain as he recalibrates his aim between the man on the ground and the woman charging at him.

Seth

Seth

If he turns, I have a split second to tackle him, but my legs are lead.

The sky opens up, dumping a deluge that blurs the world into shades of grey and brown, and the scavenger’s finger tightens once more.

Say I'm sorry Sarah I can't imagine what you must be feeling right now

FAILURE (Fair Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Seth

Seth

Sarah, I'm sorry, I can't imagine what you must be feeling right now!

Seth

Seth

The words fall flat, heavy and stupid in the driving rain.

My voice only fuels the fire. Sarah stops her charge, her chest heaving, and instead of lunging at the scavenger, she whips her head toward me with a guttural, terrifying snarl. The rock in her hand trembles, and for a split second, she isn't looking at the enemy—she is looking at me as if I am the reason the world is burning.

Scavenger

Scavenger

Oh, look at that. Even your own little pet knows you're trash.

The scavenger cackles, his focus shifting away from me and toward the woman in a trance. He steps closer, the rain lashing against his coat, and angles his pistol barrel toward Sarah’s temple. I am on my hands and knees, clawing at the mud for a grip that doesn't exist, forced to watch the woman I came to save drift toward the edge of a breakdown that will surely get her killed.

Seth

Seth

If I move, he shoots her. If I stay here, she loses her mind.

Sarah starts crying then I say it's okay you're safe now let's go back home then proceed to go home as a trio

FAILURE (Fair Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Sarah lets out a jagged, hitching breath that shatters into a full-blown, ugly sob. She drops the rock, but her posture remains coiled, a wounded animal lashing out at the world.

Seth

Seth

Sarah... it's okay. You're safe now. Let's go home.

Seth

Seth

My voice is shaking. I reach out, trying to bridge the gap, but I am just a man covered in filth and desperation.

Scavenger

Scavenger

Home? You aren't going anywhere but the grave.

He doesn't hesitate. He ignores my attempt at peace and pivots, his grin widening as he shifts his weight to pull the trigger. Sarah's sobbing stops instantly, replaced by a haunting, hollow stare directed straight through me. She doesn't reach for my hand. Instead, she turns her back on me and bolts into the dense, dark treeline, abandoning me to the barrel of his gun. The scavenger laughs, the sound cold and sharp against the rain, as he adjusts his aim to track my chest instead of her retreating shadow.

Sarah starts crying then I say it's okay you're safe now let's go back home then proceed to go home as a trio

FAILURE (Fair Diplomacy, rolled +0)

The heavy rain turns the ground into a treacherous slurry. As I reach out, the mud gives way under my boots, sending me sprawling forward. My fingers claw at empty air instead of Sarah’s coat.

Scavenger

Scavenger

Pathetic.

Seth

Seth

My vision blurs with grit and frustration. I try to scramble to my feet, but my limbs feel leaden. He doesn't even bother to kick me. He just stands there, the barrel of his pistol steady, tracking the spot where my head will be in a heartbeat. The air feels thin, choked by the downpour and the looming weight of his intent. My hands are empty, my leverage is gone, and the cold reality of my failure settles deep in my marrow. He isn't worried about being hunted anymore. He knows he has already won. He cocks the hammer, the click audible even over the roar of the rain.

Sarah starts crying then I say it's okay you're safe now let's go back home then proceed to go home as a trio

FAILURE (Fair Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Sarah lets out a jagged, gut-wrenching sob, her knees hitting the muck. The sound is pathetic, a desperate keening that slices through the rain. I lunge forward, my voice strained.

Seth

Seth

Sarah, listen to me. It is okay. You are safe now, let's go back home.

Seth

Seth

My words taste like ash. She doesn't even hear me. She stares past me, her eyes glazed and reflecting the sky, shivering uncontrollably. The scavenger’s laughter is wet and low. He doesn't lower the gun. He shifts his weight, the muzzle of his pistol tracking my movement like a magnet, completely unmoved by her breakdown. My attempt to de-escalate has only made us look like wounded animals ready for slaughter. He isn't interested in mercy, and my diplomatic failure is written in the tension of his trigger finger. He cocks his head, a cruel grin widening as he prepares to finish the job.

Sarah starts crying then I say it's okay you're okay now

FAILURE (Fair Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Horde Member 3

Still trying to play the hero, huh? Pathetic.

The scavenger sneers, his finger tightening against the trigger as the rain hammers against his jacket. He ignores my words completely, his eyes locked onto my chest with predatory focus. My failed attempt at de-escalation has clearly only served to embolden him. He shifts his weight, the handgun steady despite the downpour.

Seth

Seth

My hands are empty and my limbs are caked in mud. I have mere seconds to bridge the distance or find a new angle, but Sarah is still shaking, vulnerable and exposed behind me. If I move, he fires. If I stay, he fires. The only thing worse than the cold is the realization that I am entirely at the mercy of this man's whim.

Horde Member 3

Say your prayers, pretty boy.

Let's go Sarah let's go home

FAILURE (Fair Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Seth

Seth

Sarah, listen to me! We need to move now, get up and go home!

My voice cracks, desperate and pleading. Sarah doesn't budge. She only flinches at the sound, curling tighter into a ball of mud and misery. The scavenger’s grin widens as he notes my utter failure to reach her. He senses my panic, and his thumb pulls back the hammer of the pistol with a deliberate, metallic click that cuts through the downpour. My diplomacy has failed; my words have only served to highlight how isolated we are. He isn't interested in a trade or a surrender. He is savoring the kill.

Seth

Seth

My heart hammers against my ribs. I’ve miscalculated. I can't talk him down, and Sarah is too broken to run. I have to gamble on the mud. If I lunge for his legs the moment he loses focus, maybe I can knock him off balance before he pulls that trigger.

Horde Member 3

Home? You aren't going anywhere but into the dirt, hero.

Tyson tackles him and slits his throat

Critical hit for 3 damageHorde Member 3 struck back for 5 damage

I surge from the muck, ignoring the biting cold as I tackle the scavenger. My hand finds his throat, the sharp edge of my blade carving a grim red line across his windpipe. He gurgles, his weapon clattering into the mud, but he refuses to go down without a final, spiteful strike. He swings his pistol hard, the heavy steel barrel cracking against my temple with a sickening thud. The world spins, the rain turning into a blurred, grey curtain. As my grip loosens and my vision fails, I see Sarah staring, her eyes wide and unblinking in the downpour. Darkness rushes in to claim the edges of my sight, and the mud rises up to meet me.

Seth

Seth

I didn't save her. I didn't save anyone.
