Tension at the Mountain Cabin

Seth stands in the doorway of the abandoned mountain cabin, the smell of damp pine and wood rot clinging to the stale air. Rain taps rhythmically against the corrugated tin roof, masking the sound of his own breathing. He drops his pack, the weight of the last few days settling into his aching shoulders.

The walls are thin, and the floorboards groan under the slightest shift of weight. If they tracked me from the water plant, this sanctuary won't hold for long. I need to reinforce the perimeter before the sun sets.

Miller enters the frame, wiping moisture from his brow and peering through the grime-streaked window.

Miller

Miller

We are too exposed here. If the Saviors scout this ridge, we are pinned.

A sharp, metallic scraping sound erupts from the porch, followed by the heavy, deliberate thud of a boot against the rotted wood. Seth snaps his Desert Eagle up, leveling it at the door.

Seth

Seth

Stand back, Miller. Something is out there.

Tension at the Mountain Cabin

The metallic scrape resolves into a frantic scramble as a massive 12-point buck leaps across the porch. Miller doesn't hesitate, his movements fluid and practiced. He pivots, the scope of his hunting rifle finding its mark in a heartbeat. The crack of the rifle echoes against the mountainside, dropping the buck instantly before it hits the treeline.

Seth

Seth

Hell yeah, Miller. That’s a clean shot.

Seth and Miller share a firm, calloused high-five, the adrenaline of the hunt momentarily washing away the tension of the cabin.

Stella

Stella

Are you two ever gonna grow up? It is a nice one though, I'll give you that.

Miller

Miller

We are just living in the moment. You should try not being so serious and unhappy all the time. It is a real bring down.

A solid meal means we can stay put for a few more days, but that gunshot just announced our location to anyone within three miles.

Someone has to keep their head on straight while you two play hunter. If the Saviors heard that shot, we are going to need more than a dead deer to survive the night.

Miller

Miller

Yeah, alright then. You two are just going to stand there and critique, or are you going to help me get this weight onto my horse?

Seth

Seth

She is right, but the blood trail is already drawn. We haul the carcass inside and fortify the door, or we leave it and run. With my skills, I can make this porch a fortress in an hour.

Seth

Seth

Miller, grab the hind legs. Stella, keep your eyes on the treeline. We are dragging this inside and boarding up the gaps.

Seth steps toward the porch, his movements precise and efficient, already calculating the structural weak points of the cabin as he reaches for the heavy buck.

Replace it on the back of one of our horses and tie it on then continue hunting

The buck is heavy, but the structure of the saddle is sound. If I balance the weight perfectly, the horse can handle the trek through the brush. I can lash this down tight enough to survive a sprint.

Seth

Seth

Forget the cabin, Miller. We’re moving. I’ll rig this to the saddle so it doesn't shift, but we need to stay mobile. If we bunker down now, we're just waiting to be cornered.

Seth moves with practiced intensity, his hands blurring as he secures the deer. He cinches the ropes with tactical precision, ensuring the load is centered and immovable. Within moments, the carcass is secured firmly to the pack horse, and the trio is ready to vanish into the tree line before the scent of blood draws anything worse than scouts.

Miller

Miller

Smart move. I’d rather be moving than sitting ducks. Stella, you take the lead, keep us off the main path.

Stella

Stella

The woods are thick, but the Saviors know these trails better than we do. We move fast, or we don't move at all.
