The dais grinds down into the floor, and a spiral stair opens where the black stone stood. Cold air rises from below, sharp with ozone and ancient ink. The archive is no longer blocking the way, it is offering a test.

Merek Vale
This is the heart of it. The border-rite does not want a thief. It wants a master who can pay in restraint.
Merek edges toward the lip of the stair, staring into the pristine vault below. The ledger’s runes burn steady behind Huarti, and the ward-lights hold their new pattern as if waiting for judgment.

Annika Mal
Then the toll is the trap. If he claims too much, the archive tightens on the desert. If he takes only what it permits, his rule holds.
The stair below glows faintly with sealed sigils, each step marked like a measure. Huarti’s dominion over the desert now points straight into the vault, where the archive keeps the terms of his power.
The path is clear at last, descend and negotiate the archive’s cost, or lose the border to its own law.

Negotiate the archive’s cost
“I take out a small white bead bracelet of purity and use it as a sacrifice”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

Huarti lifts the small white bead bracelet between two long fingers and lowers it toward the vault's open throat. The cold vapor curls around his hand, then stills as if listening.
The bracelet loses its sheen. One bead after another pales to dust-white, and a thin line of light threads from the offering into the spiral stair below.
Deep in the vault, something answers with a soft, fitted click. The air eases, and the ink-scented chill grows gentler, less guarded.

Merek Vale
That did it... the archive has taken the cost.

Annika Mal
Then it is not demanding blood. It is asking for worth.
The bracelet crumbles away in Huarti's fingers, leaving only a faint white stain that fades from his palm.
From the vault below comes a second signal, a calm pulse that makes the ward-lights along the dais turn inward, toward Huarti, as if granting him leave.

Annika Mal
The vault is open to you now. What stays in the archive, and what is refused?
“I proceed”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled -2)

Huarti steps onto the spiral stair. The vault air folds around his tall frame, no longer hostile, only watchful.
His bare feet find each black step without hurry, and the inward ward-lights dim behind him as he descends.

Annika Mal
It is accepting him... I think the archive has chosen its listener.

Merek Vale
Then the question is not whether he can enter. It is what he means to take with him.
The stair turns once, twice, and the vault throat opens wider below, lined with shelves that catch the new calm in pale bands.

Huarti
The seal is spent. The path is open.
At the foot of the stair, a dark chamber waits with sealed shelves and a central pedestal, silent as if expecting judgment.
“I proceed further”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +2)

Huarti continues downward, and the chamber answers by widening in silence. The last step gives way beneath him into the vault floor without a stumble.
Ahead, the central pedestal is bare except for a shallow ring of dust and a single slit in the stone, as if something was lifted away and never returned.
A thin ward-light travels across the shelves and lingers on a row of empty slots, each one marked with the same careful script.
Annika Mal calls softly from above, her voice carrying down the stairwell. "It is showing what was taken, not just what is kept."

Merek Vale
Then the archive keeps a ledger of its losses as well.

Huarti
The empty slots are deliberate. This chamber remembers removal.
On the pedestal edge, a hidden seam clicks open, revealing a narrow compartment and a folded strip of blackened vellum. The vault waits for Huarti to choose whether to read it.
“I cast identify”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -1)

Huarti lifts the blackened vellum and lets his power settle over it.
Runes flare into view, not ink but old wards, naming the strip as a ledger of sealed removals.
The archive answers with a second layer beneath the first, a hidden note of warning. This piece is worth keeping, but only as a key to what was taken.
A thin thread of white light peels free from the vellum and curls toward Huarti's hand, leaving the rest intact.
Above, Annika Mal inhales sharply, and Merek Vale leans in as if the vault has just spoken aloud.

Merek Vale
It is a record, and a warning. He can read the losses now.

Annika Mal
Then the archive is telling us what it will not let go.
“I weave my dark magic to decipher it and unlock it”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

Huarti’s dark magic sinks into the vellum like ink into dry bone. The ward-script loosens, then unfolds into a second line of names, each one sealed and filed away.
Symbols detach from the strip and hover in front of him, revealing what the archive keeps and what it bars from memory.

Huarti
It names the kept records, and the hidden removals beneath them.
The white thread in Huarti’s hand tightens, then curls back into the vellum, leaving the strip unlocked and legible.

Merek Vale
There. The seal yields. It shows the archive’s stores, and the things it has chosen to hold back.

Annika Mal
Then the answer is here. What stays, what is taken, all of it.
One hidden mark glints brighter than the rest, pointing toward a deeper index below the chamber floor.
