The Law Becomes a Path

The gold threads in the sand settle into a loose braid around the fire. Saffi stands before the elders, and their faces ease a little as the law stops feeling like a blade and starts feeling like a path.

The road is protected. No one is bound by it. Only watched over.

An elder lets out a slow breath. Another nods toward Huarti, not with fear now, but with the careful respect given to a heavy thing that has chosen not to fall.

Then the bargain is clear. Safety without ownership. That is a rare kind of strength.

Huarti remains at the edge of the camp, still and towering, his red toga dragging through the firelight. Nearby, the warded sand gives off a warm glow, and the nomads begin to sit again instead of stand guard.

The camp is quieter than before, but it is not empty of feeling. It is waiting.

If Ehahase is the name above this protection, then we can speak her name with gratitude. That is easier on the heart.

Saffi inclines their head, and the tension in the circle loosens into something closer to ceremony. The fire crackles softly, and for a moment the camp simply rests inside its new shape.
