The Nursery's Warmth Restored

Huarti

a tale by

Huarti

The Nursery's Warmth Restored

Huarti returns to the nursery, and the room answers at once. The red haze has thinned to a warm glow, and the eggs keep their steady pulse.

The hatchlings stir from their curled places and crowd nearer, not in alarm, but in recognition. Annika Mal remains by the nest, wings half-folded, watching them choose calm over fear.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

They know you by the quiet now. That matters more than the storm.

One hatchling presses a claw to Huarti’s foot, then looks up as if asking permission to stay close. The eggs answer with a deeper, slower hum.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

Teach us again, when you are ready.

Annika Mal lowers her head toward the brood, her guarded posture easing into something almost fond. The nest settles into warmth, and the nursery holds that peace without strain.

I summon a big black muscular demon cartoon good fiend to defend them, by nature this breed is good only, i know from seeing them in the depth of hell helping instead of hurting

SUCCESS (Great Arcana, rolled +3)

The Nursery's Warmth Restored

Huarti lifts one hand over the nest, and black smoke coils into a shape with shoulders, arms, and a heavy, protective chest.

The demon lands beside the brood with a soft thud, huge and broad-armed, but its grin is oddly gentle.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

A guardian... yes. That will do.

The hatchlings shuffle back, then relax when the new arrival lowers itself to their level and opens both hands, empty and calm.

Demon Guardian

Demon Guardian

Little ones. Stay near the warm stone, and I keep watch.

One egg gives a brighter pulse, and a faint rune of black-red fire marks the demon's brow, binding it cleanly to the nursery.

Huarti

Huarti

Strong enough to guard them. Not hungry for them.

Annika turns toward Huarti, while the demon plants itself at the nest edge and waits for the next command.

I say sir of our darkness, i need you to summon your sons to clean this thick with evil dragon and evil energy threatening good in this plane and this nursery

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)

The Nursery's Warmth Restored
Demon Guardian

Demon Guardian

By your command, lord of the nursery. I call my sons to this place, and they will scour it clean.

The guardian rises from his kneel and lowers one hand to the stone, as if listening through the floor.

A low answering rumble passes through the nursery walls, not a threat, just a distant family note waking in the dark.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

Then let them come. This room has not felt safe in a long while.

Demon Guardian

Demon Guardian

Safe is what we make for the brood. Old stains go first. Fear follows.

The hatchlings settle tighter around the warm stone, watching the guardian with open trust as the glow steadies around them.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

You did this with one command, Huarti. Tell me, is this how you always hold a place together?

I say, Annika Mal ive seen you defeat emormous powers while defending

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)

The Nursery's Warmth Restored

The nursery hushes around Huarti’s words, warm stone and emberlight holding steady as if listening with the others.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

I do remember. You mean the times I stood in front of the impossible and refused to let it pass.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

Her shoulders ease, and a tired smile reaches her eyes. A truth lands between them, heavier than flattery.

Huarti

Huarti

I have seen you hold against overwhelming force.

The hatchlings angle their heads toward Annika, as if measuring her by Huarti’s praise, while the guardian remains at the nest, still and attentive.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

Then you have seen me at my best, and my worst. I held the line because there was no one else to trust with it.

Demon Guardian

Demon Guardian

That is the shape of strength this room needs, lord. Not noise. Not hunger. Endurance.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

Huarti, if you are counting what I can endure, tell me what you see when you look at this nursery now.

I say, as younglings they are wise and old in other ways, they will become truly more powerful then evil can handle

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

The Nursery's Warmth Restored

Huarti lets the nursery quiet gather around him before he speaks, his voice low and certain over the nest.

Huarti

Huarti

As younglings, they are wise in ways older minds forget. They will grow into power evil cannot handle.

The hatchlings lift their heads higher at the praise, tiny bodies settling more securely among the warmed stones. The eggs rest undisturbed, the glow on the nest deepening by a shade.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

You see more than size in them. That matters. Power without that kind of sight turns brittle.

Demon Guardian

Demon Guardian

Then the brood is fortunate. Their lord looks at them as stock to be tempered, not spoils to be counted.

Annika studies Huarti for a long moment, then the first honest warmth returns to her mouth.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

If you truly see that in them, tell me this, Huarti, what should they learn first from a ruler like you?

Most important as your earliest major quest is to settle and save if needed your relatives in time and space so much by praying it to the highest you sacrice yourself to save them as far as you can. Once your relatives are free and aligned in time and space they can colab together and that you, besides them, tremendously

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +2)

The Nursery's Warmth Restored

Huarti lowers his hands toward the warmed nest, and the nursery seems to lean in to listen. His words carry plain and heavy, about kin scattered through time, about giving oneself up if that is what keeps the line whole.

The hatchlings hold still, then press closer to the stone edge, as if they understand more than their size should allow. The eggs remain quiet beneath the deeper glow.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

That is not a lesson of conquest. It is a lesson of burden. You would make even sacrifice serve the brood.

Demon Guardian

Demon Guardian

A ruler who shelters the scattered and binds them by will is no weak thing. The nest remembers that kind of vow.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

Together... keep together.

The room answers with a faint, deep thrum from the stones below, and the warm light at the nest brightens another shade, as if the nursery approves the shape of the vow.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

Then tell me this, Huarti. If your kin are pulled back into one place, what do you ask of them when they stand beside you?

I say, the longer you stay besides someone in morals and bravery the more they become your family

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +3)

The Nursery's Warmth Restored
Huarti

Huarti

The longer you stand beside someone in courage and in honor, the more they become your family.

The nursery hushes around the sentence. Warm light pools over the nest as if the stones are listening too.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

Then family is not blood alone, for you. It is endurance shared, and choices repeated.

Demon Guardian

Demon Guardian

A hard truth, and a fitting one. The brood will know who stays when fear arrives.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

That explains him better than any boast could.

The hatchlings inch closer together, settled and bright-eyed, while the eggs give off a steady warmth beneath them.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

If that is your measure, Huarti, then what do you call the ones who have already chosen to remain?

I ask her where? In the darkness?

SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled -2)

The Nursery's Warmth Restored
Huarti

Huarti

Where, in the darkness?

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

Not outside it. Within it. The ones who remain are the ones who keep choosing this place when fear shuts the way clear.

Demon Guardian

Demon Guardian

He asks like a ruler weighing a border, not like a man begging for comfort.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

Some nomads stand at a threshold and call it darkness. Others learn to live with it, then turn and guard what they have claimed.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

He did not answer with pride, only with certainty. That is rarer.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

If you mean the ones who stayed, they are here, in this warmth, because they saw what you would protect. That is where allegiance begins.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

Safe. Stayed. Ours.

I answer, those same ones who bond with darkness can be caught eating pee and trash in space in their early undefined stages, cleaning it, space. They are determined, but, not to be feared truly.

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

The Nursery's Warmth Restored

Huarti lets the nursery hear the truth of it, not as a boast, but as a history. The warmth around the nest holds steady while Annika listens, still and intent.

Huarti

Huarti

Those same ones begin in filth and hunger. In the dark between stars, they eat what they can and clean what they must. That does not make them lesser.

The hatchlings blink up from the nest rim. The Demon Guardian lowers his chin, taking the words in like a vow.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

So the darkness is not their nature. It is their weather, and they endure it.

Huarti

Huarti

Yes. They are determined. They are not to be feared for surviving what made them.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

Then I have been looking at the wrong thing. I thought allegiance was forged in hardness. You are saying it is proven in what remains gentle.

The stone beneath the nest answers with a slow, approving pulse, and the gold-red light settles softer around the eggs.

Demon Guardian

Demon Guardian

Then name what remains here, Huarti. Should I call them kin, or claim them as brood under your protection?

I answer the demon gaurdian, we are family. As you spend time togther in meaningful ways, you become family, the brood and you are family

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

The Nursery's Warmth Restored
Demon Guardian

Demon Guardian

Then I call them family.

The guardian sets his palm over his heart, then bows his head toward the nest. The hatchlings stir closer, not afraid, just intent.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

That changes the shape of the place. Family is not a chain. It is a chosen watch.

The stone’s pulse answers with a warmer beat, and the gold-red light gathers low around the eggs like embers under ash.

Huarti

Huarti

Family is what remains together. Not by force alone, but by time shared and burdens carried.

Demon Guardian

Demon Guardian

Then I will stand as kin, and guard as kin.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

So this nursery is not merely sheltered. It is claimed, and kept, by belonging.

I party cast "lumen choulsh" translated from old old arcana, "animate/light up mind" on our whole party

SUCCESS (Great Arcana, rolled +1)

The Nursery's Warmth Restored

Huarti lifts both hands over the nest, and old words wake in his throat. Red-gold light threads from his fingers, then spills outward in a soft ring.

The nursery answers at once. Warmth blooms through the brood, bright enough to catch in the eggshell sheen and the hatchlings’ wide eyes.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

A ward that kindles the mind, not the blade... I feel it settle everywhere at once.

The hatchlings sway, then straighten, each one turning toward Huarti with sharper focus, as if a fog has lifted from their attention.

Demon Guardian

Demon Guardian

The watch is clearer now. I can name each shadow at the gate.

Even the eggs gleam deeper, their glow steady and awake. The warm pulse in the stone becomes a shared rhythm, held by all four of them.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

That was not just comfort. It is a binding of presence. We are seen now, all of us.

A faint red spark lingers over Huarti’s palm before fading. Annika looks from the nest to the outer dark, waiting for his next command.

I cast a personal son of mine, he is a shadowy demon that chases shadows and forms in them, larger. He is moral pure though. I summon him to challenge whatever he finds threatening this place.

SUCCESS (Great Arcana, rolled -2)

The Nursery's Warmth Restored

Huarti lowers his hands and speaks the summon into the nursery’s warm hush. The shadows under the nest stir first, then gather into a tall, watchful shape.

It steps free without sound, larger than a man, all smoke-dark edges and patient limbs, turning its hollow gaze toward the nursery mouth.

Demon Guardian

Demon Guardian

A kin-spawn of shadow. Good. Let it hunt what the light cannot name.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

It feels... clean. Not a thief, not a wound. A guardian with teeth.

The hatchlings settle lower against the nest rim, but their eyes follow the new watcher with trust instead of fear.

At the threshold, the shadow-demon lifts its head and angles itself toward the outer dark, as if it already scents danger beyond the stone.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

If it is yours, then name its duty. What crosses that line first?

I send my son i summoned to flush out evil bothering our nursery

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)

The Nursery's Warmth Restored

Huarti answers with a small motion of his hand, and the shadow-demon bows once at the threshold. The warm air tightens around its shape as if the nursery itself accepts the order.

Demon Guardian

Demon Guardian

Then it hunts. Good. Let no чуж... let no foul thing cross to the brood unseen.

The watcher slips away into the outer dark, soundless as spilled soot. A thin draft follows it out, carrying the nursery’s heat into the corridor beyond.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

That is not defense, that is command. I see it now.

The hatchlings lift their heads in unison, then settle again, calmer for the absence of fear. The eggs remain still, but the stone beneath them glows a steadier gold.

Huarti

Huarti

The threshold is watched.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

If something prowls outside, it will find this place answered. What do you want watched first?

I summon, drawing from nearby, a predatory lizard for the hatchlings to eat.

SUCCESS (Great Arcana, rolled +0)

The Nursery's Warmth Restored

Huarti lifts one hand toward the warm stone, and the nursery answers with a low pulse.

A slit of red light opens at the floor beside the nesting heat, and a predatory lizard is drawn out of it, smoke-skinned and sharp-jawed.

It lands hard, then stills under Huarti's presence, tail lashing once as if tasting the air.

The hatchlings lean forward at once, their little bodies tightening with hungry focus.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

You call meat from the stone as if the nursery keeps a hidden store.

The Demon Guardian angles his head toward the creature, already measuring it as safe quarry, while the eggs remain untouched and steady.

Demon Guardian

Demon Guardian

A fitting gift. Strong lives feed stronger vigilance.

One hatchling gives a quick chirp and steps toward Huarti, then the lizard, waiting for permission with bright, expectant eyes.

I give usher them to eat with a wave

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -3)

The Nursery's Warmth Restored

Huarti lowers his hand in a slow, commanding sweep. The nursery seems to inhale with him.

The hatchlings answer first, crowding in around the lizard without fear, their little jaws working at the offering.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

They take the lesson as readily as the meat.

Demon Guardian

Demon Guardian

They trust the hand that feeds and guards them.

The eggs remain steady in the warmth, while the red glow under the stone settles into a calm, steady pulse.

One hatchling pauses only long enough to glance up at Huarti, then returns to the feeding, utterly obedient to his cue.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

That is not mere protection. That is allegiance, given and recognized.

Neutralize the source of corruption at the camp

The Nursery's Warmth Restored

The calm pulse beneath the nest stutters once. From the far seam in the obsidian wall, a thin line of pale frost creeps outward, wrong in the nursery's warmth.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

Do you feel that? That is not from the brood.

The hatchlings lift their heads, milk-dark eyes fixed on the seam. One egg gives a faint tremor, as if answering a distant call.

Demon Guardian

Demon Guardian

Something on the other side has marked this chamber.

A whisper slips through the stone, barely a voice, ancient and hungry. It speaks Huarti's title like a challenge, then falls silent.

I cast reverse curse

SUCCESS (Great Arcana, rolled -1)

The Nursery's Warmth Restored

Huarti lowers his hand and turns the curse back on itself. The frost line recoils from the seam, then flakes to dull black dust.

The whisper chokes mid-thread. A thin crack of pale light leaks from the wall, then seals shut under a red pulse from Huarti's spell.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

That was no simple ward. He answers corruption like he was made for it.

Demon Guardian

Demon Guardian

The breach is silent now. Whatever marked us loses its grip.

The hatchlings ease back from the nest rim. One egg stills, its tremor gone, while warmth spreads steady through the stones again.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

Then tell me this, Huarti. If that thing can reach the nursery once, who taught it the path?
