The Devil's Brood Settles

The nursery rests in a warm hush. Huarti sits in the nest with his long limbs folded close, while the hatchlings press against his legs and bellies, their tiny scales holding a steady crimson glow.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

Safe. Warm. Stay.

One hatchling noses at Huarti’s beaded necklace, then settles its chin on his foot as if claiming a place. Another blinks up at him, starry light sliding over its snout.

The Hatchling

Keeper... stay?

Huarti lets the red haze pulse softer, and the brood answers at once, breathing in rhythm. The eggs remain still, undisturbed, as if listening too.

The Hatchling

We keep close. We learn.

A quiet comfort settles over the nest. The hatchlings curl tighter around Huarti’s folded form, no longer anxious, only attentive, waiting for whatever lesson or word he gives next.

I weave an illusion display for children, colorful, vivid of the massive green male drahon "Earlise" defeating tremendous evils and prevailing like no other

SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled +0)

The Devil's Brood Settles

Huarti lifts one long hand, and the nest answers him with a shimmer of red and gold. In the air above the eggs, a colossal green dragon takes shape, thunder-bright and watchful.

The illusion surges forward, vast wings beating apart a storm of black shapes that twist like evils given claws. Earlise plants himself, then drives through them with a roaring sweep of flame.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

Big... strong...

The hatchlings crowd closer, eyes wide as the green dragon shields smaller figures in the glow, then rises higher than the darkness above it. Their crimson sheen brightens in answer.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

He wins. He stays. He does not run.

Huarti threads one last flare through the vision, and Earlise turns toward the brood as if noticing them for the first time, lowering his head in solemn welcome.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

Teach us that face. Teach us the way he stands.

I say, each of you even as hatchling are more poweful then you know

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +2)

The Devil's Brood Settles
Hatchlings

Hatchlings

Then we are not small after all?

Huarti lets the nursery hold his silence a moment longer, and the red glow in the brood answers him with a steadier pulse.

Huarti

Huarti

Each of you is stronger than you know.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

Stronger how? We only know the nest, and your voice.

The nearest hatchling stretches a foreclaw toward the giant green illusion, then curls it back to its chest as if feeling power there.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

If he sees it in us, maybe it is real.

The crimson sheen along their scales brightens in unison, not from fear now, but from attention.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

Show us one thing we can do.

I create a simple foul lesser fiend controlled outside, stuck like a scarecrow and order the try zone of sweet air and magic missile on it

SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled +1)

The Devil's Brood Settles

Huarti raises one long hand, and foul vapor knots itself into a small fiend, stiff as a scarecrow and shackled to his command.

He points once. A bright dart of red force snaps from his fingers and punches the construct squarely in the chest.

The little fiend jerks, smokes, and holds, its body pinned in place by Huarti's will. The sweet air spell blooms around it, clean and warm against the nursery's blue chill.

The hatchlings lean in, their shared crimson pulse steady now, studying the trick as if it is a lesson carved in light.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

Again. We want to see it again.

The illusion above the nest flickers with the spell's spill, then settles. Even the eggs seem to quiet under the lingering magic.

The scorched little fiend stands obediently at the nest's edge, waiting for Huarti's next command.

I tell the hatchlings to try casting magic missile at it and zone of sweet air

SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled +4)

The Devil's Brood Settles

Huarti lowers his hand toward the nest and gives the hatchlings a sharp, measured nod. The little fiend stands squarely in view, still pinned by his spell.

Huarti

Huarti

Magic missile. Sweet air. At the construct. Now.

The hatchlings answer at once. Blue-white darts spit from small throats, and a soft wash of sweet air rolls over the fiend, wrapping it in a clean shimmer.

The construct jolts under the combined spellwork, its smoky shape tightening and then going rigid again, obedient to the lesson.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

Again. We can do it again.

The green dragon illusion above the nest brightens, catching in the hatchlings' eyes. Even the eggs give a deeper, steadier hum, as if the nursery itself approves.

A thin crackle of leftover red force dances around Huarti's fingers, then fades. The sweet-air shimmer clings to the fiend a moment longer, pristine and controlled.

I tell them how powerful Aerdrie Faenya is that she is so powerful she fixes the stars and that zone of sweet air is her arcane spell, her manifest through it removes evil in almost any situation as such a simple spell to use and magic missile as effective against almost all, well used in succession and easy to cast

SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled +1)

The Devil's Brood Settles

Huarti lets the glow settle and speaks of Aerdrie Faenya, the star-fixer, whose power reaches so far it stitches the sky itself. The hatchlings listen, still and bright-eyed.

Huarti

Huarti

Sweet air is her kind of spell. It washes evil away when it is used rightly. Magic missile is simple too, but in succession it becomes terrible.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

So the small spells can be strong? We can learn that?

The green dragon illusion above them dips its head as if agreeing. The sweet-air shimmer around the nest thins into a calm, clean veil.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

He knows the sky. He knows what to teach.

One hatchling edges closer to Huarti's hand, then another, their trust plain in the way they lean toward his voice.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

Tell us the order. Tell us how to do it right.

If something is wrong, your senses will feel evil creeping up, you dispel it immediately with zone of sweet air. And if ut manifest still you fall back on mahic missile, beside the style you develop naturally as you grow

SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled +0)

The Devil's Brood Settles

Huarti lifts one long hand over the nest, and the sweet-air veil gathers tight around his fingers.

Huarti

Huarti

If evil stirs, I feel it first.

He shows the hatchlings the order plainly, sweet air first, then a hard red flare if the shape will not leave.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

First the clean air, then the strike. We understand.

A thin wrongness leaks near the eggs, and Huarti answers at once. The shimmer snaps bright, washing the stain out before it can settle.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

It is gone. You caught it before it touched the nest.

The green dragon illusion bows lower, its glow steadier now, as the hatchlings watch Huarti like a law made flesh.

I show them a dragon cast for basalt that counters fiends and tell them to try it on the dummy

SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled -1)

The Devil's Brood Settles

Huarti lowers his hand and traces a hard, angular sigil in the air. Basalt-dark light gathers around his claws, compact and cold.

The shape sharpens into a dragon cast, black and stony, its edge crackling with red seams. It snaps its jaws once, facing the dummy.

Huarti

Huarti

Try that. Hold the form, then drive it into the target.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

We try.

The hatchlings copy the pattern with small, earnest claws. Their first cast wobbles, then locks. The basalt shape lunges and bites into the dummy with a dull, solid thud.

The green illusion above them dips in approval, and the sweet-air veil hums steadier around the nest. The eggs remain calm, but the nursery now holds a new, sharper kind of order.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

Again? Show us the turn at the end.

I show them pure basalt pummeling the dummy and banishing it

SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled +1)

The Devil's Brood Settles

Huarti opens his hand, and the basalt shape swells into a heavy, black knuckle of force. It drives forward in a single brutal rhythm, pummeling the dummy with solid, grinding blows.

Each strike lands with a stone-deep thud. The dummy shudders, then buckles inward, its marked surface cracking under the pressure of the spell.

The hatchlings stare, then copy the motion with tiny, eager claws. Their own casts snap into place faster this time, steadier and cleaner.

Huarti turns the last blow into a final crushing pulse. The dummy breaks apart in a burst of dust and splinters, then the spell crushes even that into a neat heap.

A thin curl of dark residue lifts from the wreckage and vanishes into the steady sweet-air veil, as if the nursery itself rejects what remains.

The green illusion above the nest steadies into a proud, watchful shape. The eggs keep humming, calm and undisturbed, while the hatchlings wait for Huarti's next lesson.

I say now cast zone of sweet air to clean the room

SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled -1)

The Devil's Brood Settles

Huarti lifts two long fingers, and the hatchlings mirror him at once. The sweet-air veil gathers around their claws in a soft, blue-white ring.

A clean gust spills through the nursery. Dust, ash, and the last dark smear peel away from the nest and melt into the glow.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

Clean! We do it!

They repeat the pattern together. The air brightens, then settles, light and pure over the eggs.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

Again, Huarti. Teach us the next one.

The green guardian above the nest watches in stillness while the humming eggs answer with a deeper, steadier tone.

From the far side of the nursery, a faint seam of shadow stirs near the wall, as if something is waiting for the lesson to continue.

I cast reverse curse on the shadow on the wall

SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled +2)

Huarti lowers his hand toward the wall seam, and the blue light in the nest bends inward.

The shadow splits like wet cloth under the curse turned back. Black residue pours out, then recoils, shrinking into a thin knot.

For a breath, an old sigil flashes inside it, then flips clean and pale, like a stain erased from glass.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

It changed! Huarti, you made it change!

The eggs answer with a calmer hum. One shell gives off a soft blue pulse, and the far wall goes still.

Where the seam was, a narrow crack of light remains, revealing a hidden edge behind the nursery stone.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

What is in there?

Investigate the hidden passage behind the wall

The Devil's Brood Settles

I summon a blue female gaurdian dragon "Annika Mal" over the hatchlings, she shows on call and generates from stars in general.

SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled +0)

The Devil's Brood Settles

Huarti lifts a hand over the nest, and the air above the hatchlings opens like a night sky torn wide.

Stars gather in a spiral, then pour downward in blue shards and moon-bright mist, shaping a tall dragoness of cobalt light.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

I answer your call.

Annika Mal settles her glowing wings around the brood, her gaze sharp and steady on every egg and hatchling.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

She is ours too? Teach us, Huarti...

The blue seam in the wall brightens behind them, and a hidden crack exhales a colder, older light into the nursery.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

Guardian first. Curiosity second. That crack wants attention, but the young are safe while I stand watch.

I say, hatchlings you must grow strong and find me when youre ready and feel it is right, i will come visit as you grow also in the meantime.

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Huarti lets the blue hush settle before he speaks, his long hand steady over the nest.

Huarti

Huarti

You must grow strong. When you are ready, find me. I will come again as you grow.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

We will... learn fast. We will wait for you, Huarti.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

They hear you. That is how brood-bonds begin, with a promise kept in front of witnesses.

The hatchlings press closer together, then lift their heads as if the words give them shape. The eggs keep humming, steady and untroubled.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

They will remember this. They will remember who spoke to them as heirs, not ornaments.

Huarti’s gaze turns once toward the glowing crack, and he feels the old light there without moving closer. The nursery remains calm, held in a blue, watchful silence.

I investigate the gap in the wall

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +3)

The Devil's Brood Settles

Huarti lowers his gaze to the glowing crack and follows the cold seam with his senses. The light is not just leaking, it is breathing.

He reaches the wall edge, and the hidden gap answers under his hand, widening just enough to show a narrow passage behind the stone.

Huarti

Huarti

A concealed way back there.

Blue air spills out, carrying the scent of deep frost and old scales. The eggs keep humming, but the sound sharpens.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

That is no crack in mortar. Someone sealed this passage on purpose.

The hatchlings lean toward the opening, then hold still as if waiting for Huarti to choose who goes first.

Hatchlings

Hatchlings

Is it ours now, Huarti?
