The Safeguard of the Spires

Huarti descends to the boundary line, sealed scroll in hand. The Nomad Envoy, Elder One, Elder Two, and Elder Three hold their places beside the tribute. Behind the tribe, the dormant blue brood stirs somewhere under the spires, a quiet threat beneath every word.

He breaks the seal. The scroll unfurls in the desert wind, its formal safeguard lines catching the light. The nomads lean in, tense and obedient, waiting to learn what law now binds them to his shadow.

Read it aloud, Huarti. Let all who serve under the spires hear the terms plainly.

Elder Two

Elder Two

If the safeguard is true, we carry it back unchanged. If it is not, we stand unmade at your edge.

Huarti reads. The safeguard names his rule, the caravan borders, and the penalties for trespass, all in a voice meant to travel. At the last line, the hidden blue ward in the scroll flares once, sensing the brood below.

The flare dies. The nomads see it, and so does Huarti. His dominion over them is now written, but the spires still keep one rival heartbeat in their stone.

The Safeguard of the Spires

Huarti lowers the scroll a fraction and lets the words settle over the desert. The blue ward stays quiet now, pinned under his acceptance like a sealed flame.

I agree.

The elders breathe out at once, as if the stones themselves have permitted it. The Nomad Envoy straightens, relief flickering across her face before she masters it.

Then it is spoken cleanly. We carry your safeguard back as law, and no tongue in the caravan will bend it.

Elder Two

Elder Two

He takes it as ruler, not supplicant. Good. Better than good.

Elder One reaches for the tribute, then stops short, waiting for Huarti’s leave with careful hands. Elder Three lifts her gaze to the scroll, studying the blue mark as if she has seen a secret paid for in one breath.

Will your law stand against anything that stirs below the spires, or only against our feet?

The question hangs in the dry wind. The tribute remains untouched, and the nomads wait for Huarti’s answer as the alliance hardens around his silence.
