The Devil's Return to the Nest

Huarti leaves the terrace and steps back into the nursery, where warmth gathers around him like a living blanket. Dragon-fire scent hangs in the air, soft and clean, over the steady pulse of the nest.

Annika Mal kneels beside the hatchlings, adjusting a strand of nesting moss with careful fingers. She looks up at Huarti and stills, reverent but no longer afraid.

The hatchlings stir as one, lifting their tiny heads. A few press closer to the stone bowl, while others turn toward Huarti, drawn by his arrival.

You bring the room to attention without raising your voice. They feel it every time.

The nursery answers with a soft, rhythmic glow, red and gold breathing through the shadows. The eggs remain calm, and the hatchlings settle again near his feet.

Come sit a moment, Huarti. Tell me what you want them to remember when they are older.

Strengthen the nursery’s defenses

I weave a box, same as the other hatchlings box that produces through illusion magic moving images of eras and powerful good dragons battling for control

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -1)

The Devil's Return to the Nest

Huarti lowers his long hands over the nest and threads red magic into the air. A small box of light coils itself open, its edges dark as obsidian, its inner face alive with shifting scenes.

Within it, ancient dragons clash over black skies and ruined spires, their fire and lightning trading places like crowns. The hatchlings lean in at once, fixed on the moving history.

So this is the memory he offers them... not comfort, but a legacy of power.

The illusion deepens, adding layers, a buried vault, a broken banner, a towering red dragon forcing lesser horrors back into the void.

Annika Mal

They should remember this. Not fear, but the way he stands against what would take the nest.

The hatchlings crowd closer, their attention locked on the box. One small claw lifts, trembling toward the light as if to touch a hero from the past.

Annika Mal

Annika Mal

What name should they keep for that strength, Huarti?

I show them in the box one of the most powerful good female black dragons, a huge female named "Maguthmura" a matriarch of space

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -1)

The Devil's Return to the Nest

Huarti bends the illusion wider, and the starry glow gathers into a vast black silhouette with silver-edged wings.

The shape sharpens into Maguthmura, huge and calm, her dark scales catching constellations like armor.

A matriarch. Not feared into memory, but honored into it.

Inside the box, Maguthmura lowers her head toward a ring of smaller dragons, shielding them with one broad wing.

The hatchlings fall silent, then mirror the gesture, tiny wings half-spread as if they already understand.

Annika Mal

That is the one they should remember. Power that guards, not merely conquers.

The illusion catches on a new detail, a carved star-mark at Maguthmura’s throat, old and ceremonial, as if her title is spoken in the very sky.

Annika Mal

What do you call her in their telling, Huarti?

She is one of the highest mothers of all the dragons of space and time, i tell them

SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +0)

Huarti

Huarti

She is one of the highest mothers of all the dragons of space and time.

The words settle over the nursery like a seal placed in wax. The illusion’s amber light warms the nest rim, and even the hatchlings seem to breathe slower.

Annika Mal

Then they will remember her rank, and her restraint. That matters more than a feast of victories.

Hatchlings

A high mother. A guardian above the dark.

Inside the box, Maguthmura’s silver-lined wing remains draped over the smaller dragons, the star-mark at her throat catching the glow like a second sky.

Will you tell them what that title asks of them, Huarti, strength that shelters, or strength that rules?
