Opal hits Slaan like a wave of salt wind and hard eyes. Black Company patrols choke the streets, checking names against a list as she and Kaelith press through the crush toward One-Eye's workshop.
The two guild-marked gold coins in Slaan's pouch heat in rhythm. Not warning metal, not a curse, a signal. The mercenaries are not hunting blind, they are following her.

Slaan
The coins are beacons.
Kaelith spots a side alley marked by old tar and warehouse stone. He jerks his chin toward it, then toward a low, shuttered workshop farther inland, where hammerlight flickers behind stained glass.

Kaelith
That is the trail, and One-Eye's place is still ahead. We do not stop for the Company.
Slaan slips the coins free. The heat gathers at their stamped guild marks, sharp and eager, as if answering someone else's hand across the city.
Through a gap in the crowd, Slaan catches sight of a wagon plume disappearing toward the old high lanes, and a hooded figure in the back, half hidden under canvas. The witness from Markul's wagon is already being moved.

Kaelith
So that is where the base sits. Someone just told us where to look.

Two guild-marked gold coins
“I pass by a beggar and toss the coins into his cup and keep walking”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -2)

Slaan drifts past a bent old beggar at the curb, her sleeve brushing the rim of the cup. The two hot coins click down into the tin with a dull, final note.
The heat leaves her pouch at once. Behind her, the market noise swallows the tiny sound, while the coin-mark on the cup flashes once in the sun.
A Black Company scout across the lane pauses, eyes snapping to the beggar instead of Slaan. The beggar stares after the coins, startled into stillness.

Kaelith
Good. Keep moving.
Slaan does not slow. The alley mouth and One-Eye's shuttered workshop both hold steady ahead as she slips through the press, empty-handed now.
The beggar lowers the cup, and the bright marks on the gold are already cooling in plain sight. For a breath, the trail belongs to the street, not her.

Kaelith
There, that broke their clean line. But the scouts are looking at the wrong face now.

“" aye, the tele'kure are always trying to prove themselves to get in to the company." She pauses passing a guard. " I move through the familiar streets with ease., " Think of the tele'kure as the recruitment arm of the company."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled +2)

Slaan slips past the guard by staying just another face in the rush, her robe brushing market dust while the patrol’s attention stays pinned to the curb.

Slaan
Aye, the tele'kure are always trying to prove themselves to get in to the company.
The guard’s head turns at the odd phrase, but Kaelith’s calm pace and the crowd’s churn keep Slaan’s path soft and open.

Slaan
I move through these streets with ease.
She glides on without breaking stride, letting the patrol see confidence instead of haste, and the nearest scout looks past her toward the beggar’s cup.

Slaan
Think of the tele'kure as the recruitment arm of the company.
The line lands like harmless chatter, and the guard’s suspicion loosens just enough for Slaan to pass under it.

Kaelith
Keep that tone. The wrong sort of ears are everywhere here.
Ahead, the workshop street opens cleanly, while behind them the Black Company scouts keep watching the beggar instead of Slaan.
“"I grew up here, Kina raised me here." I inform Kaelith”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +2)

Slaan
I grew up here. Kina raised me here.
The words slip out cleanly, carried low under the market noise. Kaelith slows half a step, his attention turning from the patrol to her face as if weighing the shape of a hidden door now opened.

Kaelith
Kina, here in Opal? That explains the way you move. I thought you knew these streets too well for luck.
He keeps his voice easy, but his look sharpens with respect. The crowd presses past in salted wool and spice dust, while the Black Company scouts stay busy with the beggar and the marked cup behind them.

Kaelith
If Kina raised you, then I am listening. That name carries weight in the wrong circles.
Slaan’s path stays open. Ahead, the workshop street waits in plain sight, and Kaelith matches her pace without crowding her, giving her the lane as though it belongs to them both.

Kaelith
Tell me what she taught you, and I will know what kind of ally I am walking beside.
“" well I grew up with the company, I am apart but not a part eh" I pause. " When a seven year old elf makes a fully grown half Giant male cry, you get noticed. " I smirk " if anything we play some hide and seek, torment the guards, get arrested then wait for either Croaker or the Lady to spring us."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Slaan
Well, I grow up around the Company, I am apart but not part... eh.
Slaan lets the thought hang, then keeps walking. Kaelith does not push, only turns his full attention to her as the market noise rolls around them.

Slaan
When a seven year old elf makes a full grown half giant cry, you get noticed.
Kaelith’s mouth twitches despite himself, and his shoulders ease another fraction. He looks at her like the answer is stranger, and more useful, than he expected.

Slaan
So we play hide and seek. Torment the guards. Get arrested, then wait for Croaker or the Lady to pull us out.

Kaelith
That is not a childhood, that is a training ground. And if you survived it, I think I understand why you move like you expect every street to answer back.
He says it with respect, not mockery, and the shared lane ahead stays open as they pass under hanging cloth and sun-faded signs. Kaelith glances to Slaan, quieter now.

Kaelith
Tell me what else the Company taught you. I am listening.
“" religion is an ideology for control and morals is a long way to justify doing the wrong thing" I say plainly”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Slaan
Religion is often just an ideology for control, and morals are a long way from excusing the wrong thing. I say it plainly.
Kaelith stops half a step, then keeps pace. His expression tightens, not in offense, but in recognition.

Kaelith
That sounds like someone who has watched good words get used as a leash.
He looks ahead through the market crowd, then back to Slaan, voice low enough to keep it between them.

Kaelith
In the Company, I have seen saints used like banners, and banners used to hide knives. I do not trust any creed that needs fear to survive.
A fishmonger barks over the lane, cloth snaps overhead, and the two of them pass beneath it without breaking stride.

Kaelith
So if you do not trust the sermons, what do you trust when the room turns ugly?
“" see growing up with a mercenary organization, you learn people will use morals and religion to justify anything.then pay someone else for the atrocities so their hands are clean."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)
Slaan keeps her voice level as they walk. The market noise folds around her words, but Kaelith listens all the same.

Slaan
Growing up with mercenaries teaches you fast. People use morals and religion to excuse anything, then hire someone else to do the ugly part so their hands stay clean.

Kaelith
Aye. I have seen that trick dressed up a dozen ways. Clean gloves, dirty work.
Kaelith gives a short, humorless breath and shifts closer to match her pace, eyes forward while his attention stays on her.

Kaelith
That is why I trust deeds more than creeds. A hand that helps, a warning that costs something, those mean more than any sermon.
Slaan’s answer settles between them, and Kaelith’s shoulders ease a fraction as if he has found the shape of her thinking.

Kaelith
Then tell me this, Slaan. When you judge someone, what do you count first, what they swear by, or what they are willing to do?
“" I don't judge, I treat them in kind." They come at me with an open hand, and a dagger behind their back, I do the same"We keep following the back allies and side streets until we reach One-eyes shop”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +3)

Slaan
I do not judge by banners. I judge by what they do, and I answer in kind.
Slaan slips into a side lane as the market swallows the main street behind her. She keeps her pace even, shoulders loose, and lets the crowd hide her shape while Kaelith shadows the turn.
They thread between a spice seller’s awning and a stacked wall of casks, then cut through another narrow cut in the stone where the noise thins to a hard echo. No patrol faces them now.
A second bend opens onto a cramped stair and a soot-dark workshop front with a plain iron sign. One-Eye’s door stands half open, and a small ward-glimmer trembles on the threshold.

Kaelith
There. We are here sooner than I expected.
Kaelith stops beside her, looking from the ward to the street behind them. A watchful courier in a nearby alley lowers his gaze at once, as if recognizing the pair and choosing not to interfere.
The lane behind them remains clear, but the ward at the workshop door flickers once, as if testing whether Slaan is welcome or being measured.
“I walk into the shop and look around”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled -1)

Slaan crosses the threshold first, and the ward gives a faint, cold twitch over her skin. Inside, the workshop is all cramped shelves, hanging charms, and a workbench buried under paper, bone scraps, and little glass jars.
Her gaze moves fast over the room. A half-burned candle, a sealed ledger, and a narrow rear curtain catch her eye before anything else. The space feels lived-in, guarded, and recently disturbed.

Kaelith
He is here, or he was. This place has not been left idle.
Kaelith stays by the door, keeping his body between the lane and the shop. Outside, the courier’s footsteps fade, and the alley goes quiet again.

Slaan
The ward is keyed to more than the door.
On the bench, a thin line of dust is broken by fresh drag marks, as if something has been moved recently from the center of the room toward the back.

Kaelith
If you are seeing what I think you are seeing, then we are not alone in this after all.

“"pap-pap" he calls through the shop, with a stun spell ready”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -3)

Slaan lifts her hand and lets the little stun weave gather there, then calls, soft but clear, into the workshop. The sound lands like a tap on glass, and the room seems to hold its breath.

One-Eye
Pap-pap, is it? That is a poor knock for a burglar, and a worse one for a guest.
From behind the rear curtain, a chair scrapes hard across stone. Dust jumps on the workbench, and the fresh drag marks lead straight to the sound.

Slaan
Someone is behind the curtain.
Slaan keeps the spell ready, and a thin blue shimmer crawls over her fingers. The ward at the door flickers once more, reacting to the magic in her hand.

One-Eye
If you mean me no harm, say so now. If you mean harm, do not waste my time with it.
The curtain shifts, but does not part. Something heavy settles beyond it, and the sealed ledger on the bench quivers as if nudged from inside.

“I walk up to the old wizard and give him a hug like a girl hugging her Grandpa " missed you you old buzzard”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +3)

Slaan lowers the spell from her hand and closes the distance with no rush at all. She slips an arm around One-Eye before he can decide whether to flinch, and the old wizard stiffens with surprise, then gives a rough, unwilling chuckle into her shoulder.

Slaan
Missed you, you old buzzard.

One-Eye
Hah. If you missed me, girl, you have poor taste, but a reliable grip.
His hands pat once at her back, then pause there, as if remembering how to be careful. The ward at the door steadies, its flicker settling into a watchful glow.

Kaelith
Well. That is one way to stop a room from trying to bite us.

One-Eye
And you brought a guard with manners. This is either good news, or the end of them.
One-Eye finally lets go and tips his head toward the cluttered bench. A chalk ring there is still warm, and beside it lies a waxed tag stamped with a familiar archive mark, shoved half under the ledger as if hidden in haste.

One-Eye
Speak plain now. Why come to my door with that face, and why does my bench have someone else's seal on it?
