The sun-baked route gives way to an old safe house tucked into Khar stone, half-swallowed by drifted sand and time. Inside, the air is cool and still, and the desert noise fades to a hush.
Slaan leads the way in, hood low, and settles the vellum notes onto a battered table. Bram eases the door shut behind them while Kaelith takes a last look at the seams and corners, then lets his shoulders drop.

Bram
This is better. Fewer eyes, fewer ears.

Kaelith
And fewer reasons to rush. For once.
Dust lies thick on the shelves, but the room is stocked with the bones of old habit, a cracked lamp, a sleeping mat, a water jar gone cool at the neck. The three of them gather around the table as the wind mutters outside.

Bram
So. The clerk, the warden, the passphrase. We have enough to choose our next move now.

Kaelith
Neral Voss is no ghost. He is a man with a hand on the lock.
Slaan’s notes rest open between them, and for the first time in days, no one is running. Bram waits for Slaan’s word, Kaelith watches the lamp flame, and the room holds a rare, quiet breath.

Find the hidden tracker in the safe house
“I look for a tracker my master left to disable it with a spell catch phrase”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -1)

Slaan slides one ash-stained strip from the spread notes and traces the edge where her own mark sits hidden in the grain.

Slaan
This one is set to listen.
She murmurs the passphrase into the quiet room, then turns the vellum a thumb-width against the lamplight.
A hairline seam on the back of the strip loosens with a dry click, and a folded sliver of waxed reed slips free into her palm.
Bram leans in, eyes sharpening at the tiny packet, while Kaelith straightens from the wall and watches the door instead of the table.
Inside the reed fold, Slaan finds a stitched thread and a dab of grit-dark resin, the sort used to tether a marker to a hidden place.
The note is dead simple, if ominous, the tracker belongs to the safe house itself, and it has just gone quiet in her hand.
Outside, sand whispers against stone again, thin as breath, while the newly opened message demands a choice.

Waxed reed packet
“I set about trying to decode the records”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +2)

Slaan spreads the vellum flat and lets the lamplight rake across the fibers. Ink ghosts surface where the reed fold once hid its seam, and the route marks stop being lines and become instructions.

Slaan
This is a keyed path, not a map.
She turns one strip, then another, matching the ash smears, the stitch marks, and the tiny pressure points in the paper. The records yield a second layer, one that names a dead route and the point where it is watched.

Bram
That mark there, that is not a destination. It is a warning post.
Kaelith steps closer, eyes fixed on the spread papers, while Slaan drags two hidden notes into alignment. The pattern snaps into place, and the High Chapel's trap reads plain, a route designed to funnel the hunted into a sealed seam.

Kaelith
So they were never guiding the Sun-Eaters. They were sorting them.
A final scrap falls free from between the sheets, and Slaan catches it before it touches the sand. The ink on it is fresh, the warning urgent, and it names the safe house as one more point on the same net.
Outside, the whisper at the door seam sharpens into a thin scrape, as if something has learned they are reading. Bram turns toward the sound, and Kaelith reaches for the latch without opening it.

New Gift: Hard-Won Insight
“I turn to the door and use the houses catch phrase in irekie that means "dirty rain bleeder" as a password to who ever is outside knowing the response in irekie should be" not I"”
SUCCESS (Good Persuasion, rolled +1)

Slaan turns from the papers to the door, her voice low and flat in Irekie. The insult lands into the stone seam like a key dropped in a lock.
For a breath, nothing answers. Then the scrape stills, as if the listener outside has gone rigid.

The Hooded Watcher
...Not I.
Bram’s hand lifts off the vellum. Kaelith stops at the latch, his fingers hovering, listening for the next sound from beyond the slab.
The reply is wrong in the right way, clipped and practiced, and it carries the shape of a code answer instead of a challenge.

Slaan
The passphrase worked.
Outside, the pressure at the seam shifts away by a fraction, as if the unseen watcher has stepped back to be counted.
✓ Quest Accepted
Reveal the watcher outside the safe house
“I open the door a crack to expect either my master Kina or one of the fellow assassins tied to the safe house. With a stun spell at the ready.”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled -1)

Slaan eases the stone door open a crack, one hand already lifted to loose a stun spell if the gap shows teeth. Cold desert air slips in first, then a sliver of torchlight from the outer dark.
A hooded figure stands just beyond the threshold, half turned away from the street. Their posture is still, practiced, and wrong for a passerby.

The Hooded Watcher
Kina sent me.
Kaelith shifts in behind Slaan, his shoulders tightening as the name lands. Bram leans toward the opening, eyes fixed on the stranger’s hands.

Slaan
The voice is controlled, but the stance is trained.
Slaan keeps the crack narrow. The watcher does not force it wider, only tilts their head, waiting for recognition.

The Hooded Watcher
You took long enough.
“I open the door, still with the spell at the ready.”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +0)

Slaan pushes the stone door wider, keeping her other hand poised to snap off a stun spell. The seam yields without a fight, and the gap opens onto a narrow slice of street and shadow.
A hooded watcher stands outside, no longer just a voice in the dark. Torchlight catches the edge of their hood, and the rest of them stays half swallowed by the alley.

The Hooded Watcher
Kina sent me.
Kaelith freezes behind Slaan, then leans closer to the opening, trying to read the stranger’s intent from the stillness of their hands.

The Hooded Watcher
You took long enough.

Slaan
The watcher is here in person.
Bram shifts to the table side, eyes locked on the threshold as the door hangs open wider than before. The air outside smells of dust and smoke, and the silence between them hardens into a decision point.

“" it's been an interesting couple of days" I let them in”
SUCCESS (Good Persuasion, rolled +0)

Slaan
It has been an interesting couple of days. Come in.
Slaan eases the door open the rest of the way and steps aside, giving the watcher room to enter without turning her back on the alley.

The Hooded Watcher
Wise choice.
The Hooded Watcher slips over the threshold, and the torchlight stretches across the floor to their boots. Kaelith shifts a half-step back to make space, still measuring the stranger.

Bram
If Kina sends you, then say what she knows.

The Hooded Watcher
That your refuge is marked, and the mark has not stayed quiet.

Kaelith
Marked how?

The Hooded Watcher
A tracker in the stone, and a watcher on the route. Kina wanted you warned before either one decides for you.
The room tightens around that answer. The table, the vellum scraps, and the half-open seam all feel suddenly less like tools and more like evidence.

Learn who marked the safe house
“"Fair, have any insight on who to take this to?"”
SUCCESS (Good Persuasion, rolled +0)

Slaan
Fair. Do you have any insight on who to take this to?

The Hooded Watcher
Kina thinks in routes, not crowns. If you want this heard cleanly, find someone who still trusts the dead road.

Bram
Dead road, dead drop, same old trap unless the right mouth carries it.

Kaelith
And if the right mouth is already marked?

The Hooded Watcher
Then do not hand it to a gatekeeper. Take it to a node keeper, or to a Sun-Eater who still reads the route by ash and not by fear.

Bram
You mean someone inside their network still standing.

The Hooded Watcher
Yes. Someone who knows the passphrase, and knows when not to speak it.

Kaelith
That narrows it, and makes it worse.

Learn who marked the safe house
“" thanks I know just who to take it to, anything else?" I ask still ready with the stun spell”
SUCCESS (Good Persuasion, rolled +1)

Slaan
Thanks. I know just who to take it to. Anything else?
Slaan keeps her hand loose, but the stun spell waits in her fingers as the room falls quiet around the question.

The Hooded Watcher
One thing. Do not carry names on your tongue near the node. If you must speak, speak the route, not the people.

Bram
That sounds like advice from someone who has learned the hard way.

The Hooded Watcher
Yes. More than once.

Kaelith
And this Kina, does she still trust anyone in the network?

The Hooded Watcher
Trust is not the word she uses. But she still listens for ash marks, and she still answers a clean passphrase.
The watcher glances toward the table, where the vellum scraps lie under torchlight, then back to Slaan, waiting to see whether she wants more.
✓ Quest Accepted
Deliver the intelligence to a node keeper
“" guys , gather the papers." Useing their battle sign language I tell them to lower their hood.”
SUCCESS (Good Persuasion, rolled +1)

Slaan lifts two fingers, then points to the table. The watcher and the two men read the sign at once, and the scattered papers become the room’s center of gravity.

Slaan
Guys, gather the papers.
Bram reaches first, sweeping the vellum scraps into a tighter stack, while Kaelith steps in to shield the table from the alley light.
With a small, sharp motion of her hand, Slaan signals for hoods down. The instruction lands cleanly, more command than request.

Bram
Aye. Better to keep the street from reading us.

Kaelith
Understood.
Kaelith lowers his hood, then Bram follows, both of them bending over the papers as if the torchlight itself might overhear. The watcher stays still, watching Slaan for the next sign.

The Hooded Watcher
If you deliver this, take the ash marks and nothing else. The node keeper will know where to look.
“Did the watcher understand the hood down request?”
NO, BUT (VeryLikely, rolled 86)
The watcher remains motionless, their hood still pulled low over their brow, ignoring the silent command to reveal their face.

The Hooded Watcher
I keep my face hidden for a reason, Slaan. Trust is earned in the dark, not by showing a face that the Chapel has already marked for the pyre.
“I say the irekie phrase for the dragon, and i wait for the correct response that the conversation is over”
SUCCESS (Good Persuasion, rolled +1)

Slaan
Lanterns sleep under ash.
The hooded watcher goes still, then gives one sharp nod, as if a latch inside the room has clicked shut.

The Hooded Watcher
That is the right branch. You have the words, so the road is yours to use.
Bram eases his grip on the papers, and Kaelith lowers his chin, still watching the doorway.

The Hooded Watcher
Take the ash marks to the keeper, not the names. Names travel badly.
The watcher steps back from the center of the room, making space, their warning finished.
“"Let's go" and I take us the long way to the Khar travel gate. Part way their in the thick of the crowd I cast Vail of shadows to hide all three of us as we head for the travel gate”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +2)

Slaan gives the room its cue to move. Bram gathers the stack against his chest, and Kaelith turns first for the door, already thinking in angles and exits.
The Hooded Watcher slips aside to clear the threshold, their hood dipping once in warning as the stone room exhales around them.
Outside, Khar presses close, all heat and bodies and dust. Slaan threads the three of them into the thickest part of the crowd, where haggling voices and veil cloth swallow shape and stride.

Slaan
Let's go.
Shadow gathers to Slaan’s will, spilling outward like dim cloth. The veil takes Bram and Kaelith with her, blurring their outlines and softening their steps into the street noise.
They cross the market lane without drawing a stare, slip past a fountain’s glare, and come out at the long way to the travel gate under a roof of hanging awnings.
At the gate, a knot of porters parts around them, and a sun-browned keeper looks up from his tally board. He pauses, eyes narrowing at the ash-mark bundle Bram carries, and waits for their approach.
Slaan leaves Khar behind and arrives at Undead Island.
“I cast the spell to return to the barrowland gate, then recast to open the undead island gate to cover our movement”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -3)

Undead Island greets them with salt-cold air and pale stone, the travel gate set among black ribs of rock. The ash-mark bundle leaves Bram’s arms and settles into a clasped hold as the arch shivers once, recognizing the route.
Slaan presses shadow through the gatework, and the nearer arch answers first. Its inner ring dims, then opens with a thin, grave-light glow that points away from Khar.
She turns the spell again, and the gate they came from gutters into a dark echo. The crossing is covered, the old route masked behind a second opening that drinks the eye.

Bram
That’s cleaner than I expected. Clean enough to confuse a tail, maybe.

Kaelith
Two gates, one breath, no witnesses in between. Good.
The keeper’s tally board stops moving. He studies the shift, then the bundle, then Slaan, as if weighing whether to ask the wrong question.

Gate Keeper
You’ve covered your trail. Now tell me, who are you delivering for?
“" I need to spy master Dravin" I say to the gate keeper”
SUCCESS (Good Persuasion, rolled +2)

Slaan
I need to see Spy Master Dravin.

Gate Keeper
Dravin? That name carries weight. Why would a stranger arrive under ash and ask for him?
Slaan keeps her hand low and still, letting the bundle speak for her while the keeper’s stare hardens.

Slaan
I bring intelligence for him. Neral Voss, the dead route, the trap.

Gate Keeper
...Then you are not selling rumor. You are carrying teeth.
The Gate Keeper’s posture loosens by a fraction. He sets the stylus down beside the tally board, as if the next mark matters more than the last.

Gate Keeper
If Dravin sent you, say so plainly. If he did not, you just named a dangerous man in a room that listens.
“" let's pray it listens" I say, "I was told the dead drop, " I smirk " I figured the Undead Lords would want away to kick some teeth of the church"”
SUCCESS (Good Persuasion, rolled -1)

Slaan
I was told to follow the dead drop. If Dravin wants teeth taken out of the Church, I can bring him the bite.
Bram’s mouth twitches once, not quite a smile. Kaelith keeps his eyes on the keeper, but his shoulders ease as if the room has finally picked a direction.

Gate Keeper
Hmph. That is a cleaner answer than most bring me. Dravin does like useful poison.
The Gate Keeper reaches beneath the tally board and draws out a dull iron token, then pauses with it between thumb and forefinger, studying Slaan over the rim of his hood.

Gate Keeper
I will send word. But if you speak to him, you speak to a man who counts favors like coin. He will ask what you bled to earn this.
He presses the token into Bram’s palm. The metal is cold, and the gesture changes the room at once, from scrutiny to admission.

Gate Keeper
Wait here. If the ash mark is true, Dravin answers at dusk.
