The trail breaks onto a bleak rise, and the ash shrine comes into view below, half-buried in mist and windblown soot. Broken pillars ring a blackened chapel yard, and the mountain pass yawns beyond it like a wound in the stone.
Slaan reaches the shrine first, the cold biting through her robes. The second token knocks against the first in her grip, and Bram and the Paladin follow close behind, wary of the open ground.

Bram
This is the place. If the hunter left a trail, it ends here.

The Paladin
Open ground. Bad place to be if someone is watching.
A scrape answers from the chapel steps. From the smoke-dark archway, a new figure emerges, wrapped in a pilgrim's gray cloak, their face hidden by ash and a bent veil.

The Stranger
You came too fast. That means you still think you are the hunters.
The Stranger lifts one hand and points toward the pass, where fresh tracks cut across the soot, half-covered by drifting ash. Bram turns sharply. The Paladin squares his shoulders, hand near his sword. Slaan stands with the tokens in hand as the wind lashes the shrine around them.

“While the stranger was talking I had the hand movements for a spell silent which temporarily stops a person from speaking. " Shhhh' is all I say as I release the spell”
SUCCESS (Superb Arcana, rolled -1)

Slaan lifts two fingers and threads the spell through the air between them. The Stranger’s next breath catches, and their cloak flutters once in the windless hush.

Slaan
Shhhh.
The Stranger falls silent at once, ash-veiled and rigid in the archway, hand still half-raised toward the pass.

Bram
That was not a warning. That was a lock.
The Paladin shifts his stance, eyes snapping from the Stranger to Slaan’s hands, then to the soot where the pilgrim knot is scratched into the shrine step.

The Paladin
Good. Keep them quiet. I hear something in the brush.
A faint scrape answers from the slope beyond the broken pillars, then goes still. The wind pushes ash across the fresh tracks leading into the pass.
“" rusty get him inside and search him, Bren, see anything out there?" As I move up the steps”
SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled -1)

Slaan moves up the shrine steps, hooks an arm through the Stranger’s chest and shoulder, and turns the locked body toward the inner arch. The spell holds them stiff as a board, easy to drag.
Bram reacts at once, peeling away from Slaan’s side and angling toward the brush line. His head dips low, listening for the source of the scrape.

Slaan
Get them inside and search them. Bram, see anything out there?
The Paladin shifts closer to help, sword still low, armor markings flashing pale under drifting ash. His gaze never leaves the slope.
The Stranger is hauled under the arch and pinned there against the stone, helpless to resist. Ash slides over their boots and the pilgrim knot scratched in the soot at their feet.
Slaan pats down the Stranger’s cloak and inner seams, finding no new blade, but the hidden bulk of paper and chapel token sits where the cloth pulls tight.

Bram
Nothing I can see yet. Just the brush moving, and it keeps stopping when I look straight at it.
The wind shifts. Somewhere beyond the broken pillars, the scrape answers once more, closer this time.
“"brem give it a warning shot." I say”
SUCCESS (Good Ranged Combat, rolled +2)

Slaan
Bram, give it a warning shot.
Bram lifts his bow in one smooth motion and snaps an arrow into the brush line.
The shaft whistles low through the ash, striking bark with a dry crack that carries into the pass.
The scrape stops at once. Leaves shiver. Then something shifts, not fleeing, but turning to face them.

Bram
There. It heard that.
The Paladin tightens his grip and steps between Slaan and the slope, his armor markings catching pale gray light as he squares up to the arch.
From the brush comes one answering sound, closer now, and the ash around the shrine begins to slide downhill in a thin, restless sheet.
“"brem give it a warning shot." I tell brem”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Persuasion, rolled +2)

Slaan
Bram, give it a warning shot.
Bram answers at once, lowering his aim a hair and sending another arrow into the brush line.
The shaft snaps through the ash and vanishes into the slope. For a breath, the hillside holds still.
Then the loose ash gives way all at once. A gray sheet breaks free above the shrine steps and starts to run downhill.

The Paladin
Move, now.
He hauls the line tighter between Slaan and the slide, armor marking flashing pale as he braces for the impact.
From the brush, the hidden sound answers again, close enough to make the pass feel sealed.
“I dive for cover under the archway”
SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled -1)

Slaan drops low and dives under the archway as the ash sheet sweeps across the steps. The gray surge hisses over stone where she stood a heartbeat ago.
She lands hard beside the pinned stranger, half in shadow, half in drifting grit. The arch takes the brunt of the slide, and the falling ash pounds harmlessly against the pillar.

The Paladin
Under there, stay low. It is not done yet.
Bram snaps back from the brush edge, eyes locked uphill. The hidden scraping sound shifts again, now somewhere beyond the ash flow, and the slope groans in reply.

Bram
That was no bird. Something is moving with the slide.
The ash rush thins at the steps, revealing the soot-marked knot again through a veil of dust. The way to the open slope is choked, but the archway holds.

The Stranger
Trapped with them, the arch is the only cover left.
“I take the strangers hood off”
SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled -2)

Slaan reaches up under the arch and catches the stranger by the hood. The wet fabric peels back in her grip, ash dust falling from the seam.
The hood comes free. A narrow face and chapel-cut hair are exposed in the gray light, and the stranger jerks once as the last folds slide down.

The Stranger
So. Seen at last.
The motion pulls loose a strip of cord at the collar, and it snaps with a sharp little crack. The sound seems too loud under the arch.

Bram
Now we know who we are dealing with.
The Paladin shifts closer, armor markings flashing under the drifting grit, while the pilgrim knot on the step shows plain in the dust beyond them.

The Stranger
Careful. That noise in the brush is coming in.
“To the paladin " friend of yours rusty?"”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Persuasion, rolled +0)

Slaan
Friend of yours, rusty?

The Paladin
No. I have never seen him before.

The Stranger
A clean denial. Good. He is not playing to the shrine.
Bram gives a short, humorless breath, and the paladin’s sword hand eases only a fraction. The ash under the arch stirs as the brush noise swells again, closer now.

The Paladin
He wears chapel cut, but not chapel trust. That is enough to make me wary.
Slaan keeps the stranger pinned by the shoulder while the paladin angles himself between them and the pass. The pilgrim knot remains stamped in soot at their feet, half buried by drifting gray.
“" how secure is this place, one guy ran off, and the hunter talked about friends coming"”
FAILURE (Fair Perception, rolled -2)

Slaan
How secure is this place? One got away, and the hunter spoke of friends coming.
The question hangs under the arch. Bram’s eyes flick to the brush, then to the steps half-buried in ash. The paladin’s grip tightens on his sword as he turns his helm toward the pass.

The Paladin
Secure enough for a breath, not for a sleep. If there are others, they will not need a road to find us.
A low crack answers him from below the shrine, not a voice, not quite a slide, just stone shifting under weight. Ash sifts down in a thin veil, and the pilgim knot at their feet shows clearer for a moment as the gray blows aside.

Bram
There. Not behind us. Under the slope.
Bram points with two fingers toward a broken seam in the shrine wall, half-hidden by soot and old mortar. It looks narrow, but the stones around it are dry and undisturbed, unlike the loose pass beyond.

The Paladin
A side chamber. Better than the open steps.
The paladin shifts his stance to cover the opening while Slaan keeps the stranger pinned. The brush rustles again, then stills, as if something has heard them deciding.
“I get up and slap the stranger with the flat end of my dagger on his head," we going in, that ok with you"”
SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +1)

Slaan rises in one smooth motion and brings the flat of her dagger down against the stranger’s hooded head, a sharp, controlled tap that makes him jerk against the stone.
The stranger’s shoulders sag, stunned more than hurt, and Slaan angles the blade toward the side opening as if marking the way.

Slaan
We’re going in. That all right with you?

The Paladin
Yes. Before whatever is under that slope decides to come up instead.

Bram
If it stays dry, it might hold us for a few breaths. I’ll take point.
The paladin shifts aside from the arch, sword still guarding the opening, while ash trickles from the seam around the hidden chamber.
For a moment the brush beyond the shrine goes quiet, then a dull scrape rolls through the slope again, closer than before.

“I take the coins on the table”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Thievery, rolled +2)
Slaan turns from the chamber mouth and slips to the small table set against the shrine wall. Her fingers close on the coin pile in one clean sweep, and the metal vanishes into her palm without a rattle.
The paladin keeps his sword up at the opening, but his head flicks toward the movement, then back to the slope. Bram shifts his weight, ready to move if the floor gives way.
A fresh grit of ash sifts from the seam above the side chamber, dusting the table where the coins had sat.
Slaan’s hand comes away empty, the loot secured, as the hidden passage breathes out a shallow spill of gray powder.

The Paladin
We have what we can carry. Move now, or the mountain chooses for us.

Bram
There, under the arch, a shelf of stone. If it holds, we can sort the tokens before the next scrape.
From beyond the shrine, the dull sound returns, closer and rougher, and a thin crack runs a finger-width along the ash-dark seam.
