The basin gives one last groan, then settles. The green runes dim under the sand, and the metallic sting in the air fades to plain desert heat.
Slaan kneels by the fractured floor and sees the truth, ancient irrigation gears and channels, half-buried and misaligned. Not a Chaos Gate, just old stonework waking up wrong.

Bram
So that was the trick. A false pulse, not a breach.
Kaelith plants himself between the wreckage and the dunes, scanning the edge of the oasis while Bram gathers the scattered records into a tight stack.

Slaan
The records are still intact.
Slaan helps clear the debris, revealing the Sun-Eater papers dry beneath the collapsed stone. The false resonance is gone, and with it the drake's path back into the pool.

Kaelith
We take the records now, before anyone follows our trail.
Beyond the oasis, a faint line of wind lifts sand toward the desert edge. The way out is open, if they can move before the chapel finds the disturbance.
“" where are we going though?" I ask "we can't trust the church of the all father, and we don't know what sects are willing to help with the church of saint morlon."”
SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +0)

Slaan
Where are we going? We cannot trust the Church of the All Father, and we still do not know which sects would help us against Saint Morlon's church.
Bram tightens the stack of records against his chest, then points past the oasis toward the pale line of dunes. His answer comes with no comfort, only direction.

Bram
We do not go to the temple. We go to the nearest place that still remembers the Sun-Eaters, and we keep these papers moving.
Kaelith steps back from the basin edge, keeping his body between the water and the open desert. A dry gust skims the sand, and the broken gears underfoot give a faint, hollow click.

Kaelith
I can guide us through the scrub. But if the chapel is already on our scent, we will need the cover before nightfall.
Slaan gathers the loose pages and the ash-stained vellum strip, then slips them deeper into safe cover. The hidden notes are still there, and the path they mark is still usable.

Slaan
The dead drop route is still readable.
Bram nods once and starts toward the dune line, but he does not look fully relaxed. Behind them, the oasis stays quiet for a beat, then the wind lifts again, combing sand toward the tracks they leave.
“" where are we going though?" I ask "we can't trust the church of the all father, and we don't know what sects are willing to help with the church of saint morlon."”
SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +0)

Bram slows at the first rise of dune grass, still keeping the records tucked tight. He glances back once, then toward the low scrub beyond the oasis, where an old trail line vanishes into the pale sand.

Bram
We go to the Sun-Eater dead route first. There is a way station under stone, half buried, still marked if the old paths are true.

Kaelith
And if they are not true, we still keep moving. Standing here only makes us easier to find.

Slaan
Then we use the dead route. The records stay hidden, and we do not trust the temple to choose our path.
Bram gives a brief, tired nod at that, not quite a smile. He loosens one hand from the stack and taps the ash-stained vellum strip against his own chest, as if checking that the mark is still real.

Bram
Good. The nearest place that remembers them is not far, but the route is old, and old routes attract old lies.
Kaelith steps closer to Slaan’s side, lowering his voice while he watches the dunes. The wind combs sand over their footprints, softening the line behind them.

Kaelith
I will take point through the scrub. If the chapel comes, I want us already gone.
Slaan leaves Secluded desert oasis behind and arrives at Sun-Eater dead route.
“I nod " let's go"”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +1)

The dead route opens under a low shelf of stone, half-swallowed by dune grass and old wind. Slaan’s nod sets the pace, and the trio moves out as one, their shadows stretching thin over the pale sand.
Kaelith takes the front without waiting for a second word, scanning the scrubline while Bram tightens his grip on the records. The ash-stained vellum flutters once against his chest, then stills.

Slaan
The path is marked. The stones are older than the sand.
Slaan adjusts the records under her arm and steps in behind Kaelith, keeping the group tight to the lee of the dune. The wind skims over their prints and starts erasing them behind her.

Bram
If the old marks hold, the way station sits beyond that ridge. Keep close to the stone.
A narrow cairn breaks the line ahead, its top stone split and blackened with age. Tucked in the crack is a dry strip of vellum, caught fast in the rock like a warning left for the next traveler.

Kaelith
Something is ahead. Stay ready.
“I check the vellum in the cairn”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +3)

Slaan crouches at the cairn and works the wedge of vellum free. The strip comes loose with a dry rasp, and a second fold clings behind it, hidden in the crack.

Slaan
The inner fold is newer than the outer mark.
She opens both pieces against her palm. The outer strip carries a pilgrim knot, but the inner one holds urgent notes, a route correction and a warning about a watched turn farther on.

Bram
That is not a simple marker. Someone has been changing the dead route as travelers pass.
Kaelith steps in closer, and Slaan’s fingers find a narrow nick in the cairn stone. Tucked inside is a second, smaller slip, folded around a grain of blackened wax and a name scratched out hard enough to split the vellum.

Kaelith
Then we are not following a trail, we are following a message.
The wind surges, but the route ahead is clear now, the cairn’s hidden warning pointing past the ridge instead of into it. Far off, a faint scrape answers from the right-hand scrub, as if someone else has just read the same sign.
“I scan the scrub for the watcher”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled -1)

Slaan lifts her gaze from the vellum and studies the scrubline. The wind combs the dunes flat, but one patch of brush shivers against the grain, then stills.

Slaan
There.
She shifts her weight and tracks the movement through the stalks. A hunched shape ducks low, half-hidden by sand and thorn, watching the cairn from the right-hand scrub.
Slaan finds the watcher first. The figure jerks back too late, and a strip of pale cloth flashes between the branches before the wind swallows it.
Kaelith freezes beside her, turning his shoulder toward the threat. Bram tightens his grip on the records, eyes flicking from the cairn to the brush.

Kaelith
Someone is there.
The watcher scrapes backward through the scrub, dragging a line in the sand as if retreat is not quite the same as escape. A faint rasp answers from deeper in the brush.

Find the watcher in the scrub
“I cast stun on the watcher”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +2)

Slaan snaps her fingers and releases the stun spell into the scrub. A flat pulse of shadow leaps low through the grass.
The watcher stiffens mid-retreat. Their shoulders lock, the drag mark ends in a jerk, and pale cloth flashes as they hit the sand on one knee.

Kaelith
That stopped them. For now.
Bram shifts a half-step back from the cairn, keeping the records hugged tight while he stares at the fallen shape.

Bram
Slaan, keep them down. I want to see if they are alone.
The watcher does not rise. Instead, a second scrape answers from deeper in the brush, just beyond the first drag mark, as if another body is moving to cover the fallen one.

Find the watcher in the scrub
“I cast spectral bonds on the area as a fisherman casting a net, anyone close to the first watcher would also be caught”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +3)

Slaan casts her bonds wide, not at the kneeling watcher alone, but across the scrub around them. Thin spectral lines skim the sand like a hidden net, hooking ankles, wrists, and shifting brush.
The first watcher jerks hard as the magic catches. A second figure is yanked out of concealment beside them, tangled in the same pale cords, with a third shape snagged by the edge of the weave farther back.

Kaelith
There. More than one.
Bram takes one sharp step in, then stops as the sand between the brush rows goes still. The dragged track is no longer empty, and the hidden path is suddenly mapped by struggling bodies.

Bram
Those are Chapel hands. One of them has a satchel.
Under the nearest bound watcher’s sleeve, a chapel token flashes in the sun. Deeper in the net, a folded scrap of ash-stained vellum slips free and lands beside the cairn, marked with a fresh route note.

Kaelith
Hold them. I am moving to the brush line.
✓ Quest Accepted
Secure the bound Chapel watchers
“I walk up and slap one on the head with the hilt of her dagger. " Oy! Start talking or I feed you to the carrion birds"”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Intimidation, rolled +1)

Slaan closes the distance and drives the dagger hilt down onto the nearest watcher’s skull.

Watcher One
Ghk! Fine, fine... chapel line, east marker, ask the satchel man.
The watcher slumps sideways in the cords, blood bright at the hairline. Their dropped token clinks against the stone, and the first watcher’s breath hitches loud enough to carry across the scrub.

Slaan
Oy! Start talking or I feed you to the carrion birds.

Watcher Two
Noisy. She hit harder than I expected.
Bram snatches up the fallen vellum scrap before the wind can take it, while Kaelith reaches the brush line and parts it with his free hand. The hidden path ahead is no longer hidden.

Kaelith
There is another satchel-bearer. I see movement, east of the cairn.
One of the bound figures coughs out the route note through split lips, and the ash-stained vellum flashes in Bram’s hand as a fresh mark becomes visible. The cords stay tight, but the far watcher turns their face toward the dunes, listening for help.

“"Bram, think you can put an arrow though his leg to slow him down. Once we finish with these three we can talk to him." I ask”
SUCCESS (Good Ranged Combat, rolled +0)

Slaan
Bram, put an arrow through his leg. Slow him down. Once we finish with these three, we talk to him.
Bram answers at once, drawing and loosing in one smooth motion. The arrow skips low through the scrub and bites the fleeing satchel-bearer in the leg.

Watcher Two
Agh... damn it!
The runner stumbles hard and drops to one knee, clutching the satchel strap. Sand kicks up around the impact, and the shout carries back to the cairn.

Kaelith
He is down. Two bound watchers, one wounded runner. We keep them from reaching each other.
Watcher One flinches at the cry, while the fresh route note in Bram's hand wrinkles in the wind. The open brushline ahead stays clear, but the satchel-bearer twists toward it, trying to crawl for cover.

Slaan
The shot lands clean. Now the leg will slow him, unless he gets help.
✓ Quest Accepted
Interrogate the wounded runner
“" go grab limpy and bring him over slowly" I ask Kaelith. I put my daggers away and summon a poison tipped shadow dagger and cut both watchers. " Tell me why we are being followed and what's up with the sun eaters also why was Kaelith framed. The one who tells me the best story might live."”
SUCCESS (Fair Intimidation, rolled +2)
Slaan lowers her daggers and shadows one into a poison-edged sheen. Kaelith starts toward the wounded runner, while the two bound watchers tense at the same time.
The shadow blade flickers through the cords and leaves a dark sting across each captive’s shoulder. Both watchers recoil, suddenly too frightened to bluff.

Slaan
Bring him here, slowly. Then you both talk.
Kaelith hooks the satchel-bearer by the collar and drags him back over the sand, careful to keep the arrowed leg from folding. Bram holds the bow level, watching for any lie that turns into a run.

Watcher One
We follow the Sun-Eater notes because the Chapel told us to. They want every dead drop mapped, every courier named.

Watcher Two
Kaelith was framed to bait the road. He refused the Chapel’s chain, so they made him look like a traitor and started hunting anyone near him.

Watcher One
The Sun-Eaters are not saints, just a hidden route. Pilgrims, smugglers, runners, people who keep the hunted moving when the Church closes the roads.
The wounded runner sags under Kaelith’s grip, breathing hard. Behind them, the open brushline stays clear for one more heartbeat, and the answer hangs between the sand and the wind.
