The king’s chamber quakes again. Side doors stay sealed, and the court presses into a wary ring around the center mosaic. A Pale Clerk hunches over the ash marks, then points with a shaking finger toward three nobles near the back wall.

A Pale Clerk
Those three, my king. Their seals match the watcher code. One of them has the trigger.

The Guard Captain
Guards, on them. No one touches the node seal unless I say so.
Slaan moves on the Guard Captain’s signal, shadow slipping low across the floor. The nearest conspirator reaches inside his sleeve anyway, toward a hidden charm wrapped in wire and ash.

Slaan
The charm is the trigger.
Slaan snaps her shadow magic around the man’s wrist and yanks him off balance. Bram surges in beside her, while Lord Markul blocks the second noble from bolting toward the sealed doors.

The Bound Courtier
Too late. The node is already waking.
A cold tremor rolls through the floorstones. Beneath the chamber, the containment seal gives a sharp, ugly click, and everyone in the room feels the hidden pressure of the Chaos node answer back.

Stop the Chaos node from waking
“I point to Bram - he runs up and castes purge sin and cleansing flame on the seal”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Bram breaks free of the ring and drives straight for the center sigil, cloak snapping behind him as the chamber shudders again.

Bram
By Saint Morlon, burn it clean.
He plants his feet over the cracked mosaic and thrusts both hands down. Pale fire blooms, then hardens into a bright cleansing wash over the seal.
The hidden pressure below the floor falters. The ugly click turns into a grinding groan, and ash spits from the seam around the node mark.

A Pale Clerk
The trigger... it is burning out.
One of the nobles jerks back, sleeve torn open, as the wire-wrapped charm blackens in Slaan’s grip and drops harmlessly to the stone.

The Bound Courtier
You cannot hold it forever. Something else is already answering.
Beneath the chamber, the rhythmic tremor steadies for a breath, not gone, but checked, while the court stares at the smoking seal and waits for it to fail or hold.
“I sneak by the pale clerk and trip into him to do a quick frisk as I fall over the clerk”
SUCCESS (Great Thievery, rolled -2)

Slaan lets her footing slip and collides with the Pale Clerk, turning the stumble into cover. Papers scatter as she catches herself on his shoulder, already searching beneath the layered robe seams.
Her fingers close on a wax key, a court pass, and a folded ash-stamped note tucked inside the clerk’s sash. The note smells of smoke and old sealing wax.
The clerk sucks in a sharp breath, more startled than hurt, but he looks down at the missing items at the same moment Slaan does. The chamber’s tremor beats once through the floor under both of them.

A Pale Clerk
Those are not mine to lose.
Bram’s fire gutters lower at the sigil, and Lord Markul turns at the clerk’s tone, reading the sudden change in the room. The smoking seal still holds, but the answer below it answers back with a harder, steadier pulse.

The Bound Courtier
There. You’ve touched the hinge.
From under the cracked mosaic, something clicks into alignment. The ash at the seam breathes outward in a thin black puff, and several courtiers recoil as the chamber braces for what the hidden contingency is about to do.
“I toss what I found on the pale clerk to Bram, " cleans it" bream again casts purge sin and cleansing flame on the items”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Slaan flicks the recovered items toward Bram in a single clean motion, the wax key and court pass spinning through the air together.
Bram catches them against his palm and raises the ash-stamped note to the fire, his jaw set as the flame takes.

Bram
Cleanse it.
Purging fire licks over the papers and the key, stripping soot and sealing wax into curling black flakes.
The chamber answers with a hard tremor. The cracked mosaic spits out a ribbon of ash, and the hidden seam below it opens with a dry click.

The Bound Courtier
Too late. The hinge is awake.
Lord Markul snaps his gaze to the floor as the candelabra shiver. Around the room, courtiers stumble back from the smoking seam while Bram keeps the burning edge steady over the cleaned marks.
“As the Bound Courtier is gloating I put a poison dagger into his lower back where his kidney is”
SUCCESS (Good Melee Combat, rolled -2)

Slaan steps in on the Courtier’s gloating and drives a poisoned dagger into his lower back. The blade finds the gap under his ribs, and his laughter cuts off in a wet gasp.
He jerks hard against the shadow restraint, shoulders lurching, as the poison takes hold. A dark stain spreads beneath his formal coat while the chamber shakes around them.

The Bound Courtier
You are too late... the seal is not the trap.
Bram flinches, then keeps the flames steady over the cleaned marks. The ash-stamped note crumbles to black flecks in his grip.

Lord Markul
What did he mean by that?
The cracked mosaic splits wider with a sharp crack. Cold ash breathes up through the seam, and the hidden hollow below answers with a low, rhythmic throb.
The Bound Courtier sags, still smiling through the pain, and the court onlookers recoil as if he has given them the signal they feared. Something under the floor is waking, and it is listening.
“I walk over to Bram with one of the ash seals " do it " and Bram performs the right, brand the wicked, a non lethal spell that shows everything and everyone touched or tainted by chaos”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +1)

Slaan crosses to Bram with the ash seal held low, and Bram snaps his attention to it without breaking his stance over the papers.

Slaan
Do it.
Bram takes the seal, presses it to the blackened marks, and begins the rite. Pale fire crawls across the ash map in thin branching lines.
The chamber answers at once. The floor seam shudders wider, then the glow skitters across hidden sigils under the mosaic, tracing hands, cuffs, and boot prints touched by chaos.
One cloaked conspirator jerks back as a dark stain blooms over his sleeve, and several court onlookers gasp when the brand flashes over their hems like ink in water.

Lord Markul
There. It shows every tainted soul in the room.
Then the pulse underfoot surges harder, and the exposed seam exhales a thicker ribbon of ash as the branded signs point toward the floor below.
“I open the metal box and open the cleansing scroll and perform the rights to cleaning the bane stone, in which will also close and deal the chaos node”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +3)

Slaan sets the metal box on the ash-streaked floor and lifts its lid. Inside, the cleansing scroll rests folded tight, its edges dusted with old salt and iron.

Slaan
Now.
She unrolls the scroll over the exposed seam and lays her palms to the rite. Shadow and sanctifying light braid together, drawn through her focus into a clean, cutting line.
The hidden sigil under the mosaic flares once, then gutters. The black ash at the seam sucks inward, and the rhythmic pulse under the chamber falters.
Bram braces as the papers lift in a sudden draft, then settle. Lord Markul's expression hardens into grim relief when the branded lines on the floor begin to fade.

The Bound Courtier
No... that was not meant to be seen.
The last ash leaks from the seam in a thin cough, and beneath the mosaic a second channel opens into view, marked with watcher code and a wax-sealed token half-buried in soot.
