The second outpost rises from the dune haze, stone squat and armored, its walls draped in Sun-Eater banners. Zealots pace the perimeter in pairs, neat as marching crows. They are waiting for the records.
Slaan and Bram lie low behind a ridge of broken sand. Kaelith shifts beside them, watching the gate. The marked escape path still opens through the dune dip, but the outpost stands squarely between them and it.

Bram
They expect a handoff. If we go in wrong, they ring the yard.
A zealot at the gate turns, squinting into the wind. One of the banners snaps hard, and a patrol begins angling toward the dune dip.

Slaan
The patrol is closing the gap.
Slaan slides the records tighter beneath her robes and shadows her outline at the ridge. Kaelith rises first, drawing the zealots’ attention away from the path, while Bram points Slaan toward the opening in the sand.

Kaelith
Go. I will hold them here.
With the patrol distracted, Slaan slips for the dune dip, the outpost and its waiting zealots now directly in her wake.
“"we need to have a discussion about you volunteering at some point."”
SUCCESS (Good Persuasion, rolled +0)

Slaan catches Kaelith before he can vanish into the glare, her words low and even. The sand hisses at their boots while Bram keeps watch on the opening, giving them a pocket of privacy.

Slaan
We need to have a discussion about you volunteering for the dangerous parts.

Kaelith
He huffs once, then eases his stance. "I know. I just move first because it keeps the others alive."

Kaelith
He glances toward the outpost wall, then back to Slaan. "That does not mean it is wise. It means I have been doing it too long."

Bram
From the dune dip, Bram keeps his voice soft. "He is not wrong, but he is also not the only shield we have."

Kaelith
Kaelith's mouth tightens, then he gives Slaan a short nod. "Fine. I will stop treating myself like the only wall in the road. But if the line breaks, I still move first."
A gust snaps one of the Sun-Eater banners against the outpost stone. Kaelith shifts half a step closer to the ridge, as if the promise itself has weight, while Bram watches the patrol's angle with fresh caution.

“" Bram, can you scout out any gaps they may have"”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +0)

Slaan
Bram, can you scout for gaps in their patrol?

Bram
Aye. Keep low. I am looking for the seam in their watch, not the blade of it.
Bram slides deeper into the dune dip, his shoulders flattening to the sand. The banner above the outpost snaps hard, and the patrol’s line splits around the gusts, leaving brief pockets of empty ground.
He lifts two fingers once, then points toward the sunlit wall. The zealots there keep their backs turned whenever the banner whips across their faces, and one of the rear sentries keeps pacing the same broken arc.

Kaelith
There. The back watch drops its sightline every time the cloth slams the stone.
Kaelith tightens his grip and shifts to mirror the blind rhythm, ready to pull attention if needed. Bram stays crouched, eyes fixed on the patrol gaps, while the hidden records press against Slaan’s robes like a second heartbeat.

“I recast Vail of shadows on the three of us and we move up according to the watches movements.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +1)

Slaan threads her shadow veil over all three of them, and the dune dip seems to swallow their outlines. The banner snaps, the wall blurs, and the patrol’s rhythm becomes a moving seam she can step through.
She rises just enough to move, then slips forward on Kaelith’s timing. Bram glides ahead in the crouch, and the blind beat of cloth against stone hides their first crossing.
Another lash of the banner covers the next stretch. Slaan advances with her robes tucked close, the records kept tight against her body as the sentries turn their faces away.
Kaelith marks the pace with a small shift of his hand, then follows. The rear watcher steps through the same broken arc, never seeing the shadowed shapes passing below the wall.
Bram stops at the edge of the next blind pocket and points upward. A hidden seam opens in the patrol’s spacing, wide enough for one more careful move before the rhythm changes.
Slaan uses the last of the cover to bring them all into the blind spot beneath the lashing banner. For one breath, the outpost’s eyes slide past them, and the records remain unseen.

“I keep my shadow veil tight and lead the group toward the dune's edge.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled +1)

Slaan tightens the veil and guides them to the dune’s edge, where the wind peels at the sand but not at their shape. Below, the wall and banner keep arguing in hard flashes of cloth and stone.
Bram drops to one knee and parts the grit with two fingers, revealing the narrow line of packed earth at the outpost’s base. It runs under the blind rhythm, straight toward the escape path.
Kaelith shifts into the gutter of shadow beside the wall, then slips back in when the banner lashes down again. The sentry above misses the movement entirely.

Bram
There. The edge is open when the cloth strikes.
Slaan reaches the lip of the dune and the path finally opens under her feet, a sliver of dark ground beyond the blind pocket. The records stay hidden, untouched by the patrol’s gaze.

Kaelith
Move now. They will look up, not down.
The veil holds as they clear the blind edge together, and the outpost’s pacing line is left behind them. On the wall, the banner snaps empty against stone, while the sentry keeps staring the wrong way.
