The archive doors groan open on cold stone and candle smoke. Slaan slips through first, Kaelith tight behind her, and the wax key and court pass still feel warm in the low lantern light. At the far dais, Lord Markul stands over a spread of ledgers and sealed histories, one hand already over the first page.

Lord Markul
Too late. History only needs a careful hand.
Black sigils crawl across the shelves, and the Watchers begin to move among the aisles, silent as falling ash. Kaelith draws in a sharp breath, then squares himself between Slaan and the nearest shadowed aisle.

Kaelith
Slaan, take the seal. Stop him from writing over the record.
Markul flips the archive pair into place, and the nearest ledger stirs as if waking. Slaan feels the room tighten around the old binding marks, each shelf listening for the wrong name.

Lord Markul
You can still choose usefulness over ruin. Stand down.
Kaelith lifts his blade toward the Watchers, buying a narrow lane through the aisle. Markul reaches for the ink and the waiting page, and the archives hold their breath.

Slaan
Slaan moves to stop him.
“I cast stun, blind, and silence in order. Filling steal breath and I let shadow bolts along with posion tipped shadow daggers fly.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +2)

Slaan’s spell lands first. Markul jerks as shadow clamps his breath, strips the sight from his eyes, and seals sound behind his teeth.
He stumbles back from the ledger spread, quill slipping from his hand as the archive seal skids across the stone.
Shadow bolts snap across the dais, striking his coat and wrist. The ink jar spills black over the page he meant to rewrite.
Slaan’s poisoned daggers follow through the gap, driving Markul hard against the table edge and forcing his arm away from the record.

Lord Markul
No...
“I keep the pressure with the shadow daggers -,thrown weapons made of shadows and shadow bolts - icy bolts that cause a slit stuff and extreme spin when hit.”
SUCCESS (Good Melee Combat, rolled -2)

Slaan drives the pressure home, her shadow daggers spinning back in a tight, icy orbit around Markul’s chest and throat. The blades pin his coat to the dais edge, and his arm jerks uselessly away from the ledger.
A burst of shadow bolts snaps across his wrist and the quill hand goes slack. Ink sprays from the spill across the rewrite page, blotting the line he was trying to claim as truth.

Lord Markul
Enough...
He tries to wrench free, but the spinning blades force him back down, one boot skidding on the stone. The archive seal lies out of reach, and the ledger stays open under Slaan’s control.
Kaelith holds the aisle behind them, blade raised as the shadow sigils crawl farther along the shelves. The low lantern flickers over Markul’s pinned hands and the stained page.
The rewrite page is ruined, and Markul cannot reach the seal.
The cost lands with the last strike, a sharp ache in Slaan’s throwing hand as one shadow blade shivers apart into cold mist. Markul stays trapped against the table, breathing hard, while the archive waits for what she does next.
“" oi who give you permission to write in their." I cast spectral bonds on Markul. "You daft." I give him a smirk. " I left Bram and your phylactery on undead island, at the gate.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Slaan
Oi. Who gave you permission to write in there?
Slaan snaps her hand up. Spectral bonds lash from the floor and wrap Markul’s wrists and throat in pale, tightening cords, locking him against the dais.

Slaan
You daft.
Her smirk lands as the bindings harden. Markul’s quill hand goes still, and the blackened rewrite page lies useless beneath his chest.

Slaan
I left Bram and your phylactery on Undead Island, at the gate.

Lord Markul
...You would.
The words hit harder than the bonds. Markul’s eyes flick once, sharp with surprise, then narrow as if he is measuring the loss.

Kaelith
Then the choice is gone from his hands now.
Kaelith keeps his blade trained down the aisle, but his voice softens. The archive seal, the ruined page, and the crawling sigils all sit under Slaan’s control.
“Is it a new freash archive book Markul was trying to fill out?”
YES (Unlikely, rolled 20)

Slaan shifts her gaze to the ledger beneath Markul's hand, noticing the pristine, unblemished parchment that had been hidden beneath the blackened rewrite. It is a fresh, untouched archive book, its pages waiting for the ink of a new history.

Slaan
This is not just a correction. He was planning to write an entirely new record from scratch.
“" well problem solved" I pour ink on all the pages ruining the book then toss it in the waist basket. I look to Markul. " I gambled on you not wanting to be a lap dog for the chaos overlords. I suppose I was wrong." I make a motion for the guards to come. " Have him arrested, he does not have access to add into the records of dragon scale, he was to leave the city yet stayed to soe discord" I tell the guards plainly”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

Slaan upends the ink across the open ledger, and the clean page drinks it black before it can be read. She snaps the book closed and flings it into the waste basket with a hard, final motion.

Slaan
Well. Problem solved.

Slaan
I gambled on you not wanting to be a lap dog for the chaos overlords. I suppose I was wrong.
She turns and signals the guards at the aisle entrance, her hand cutting the air toward Markul and the ruined record.

Slaan
Have him arrested. He has no access to add into the records of Dragon Scale, and he was to leave the city yet stayed to sow discord.
The guards move in at once, while Markul stares at the ruined ledger, trapped by Slaan's words and the spectral cords holding him fast.

Lord Markul
This was not the ending I wrote for myself.

New Gift: Conspiracy Piercing Gaze

Ink bled through the ledger as the guards came near, and the archive fell still.

Slaan
Let his lies rot with the page.

Kaelith
The aisle is clear. He is not leaving this room free.

Lord Markul
You think this ends it?
It did. Lord Markul was taken from the Royal archives in chains, his rewrite ruined and his seal left meaningless in the dark. In the Highlands, the Watchers' shadows thinned under the pressure of failure, and the conspiracy that fed them lost its spine.
