The dust keeps sifting through the new crack as Slaan and the others crowd into the stone chamber. Behind them, the shrine groans under the ash slide. The path out is still not safe.

Slaan lays the chapel tokens on the floor. A pale beam slips in through the arch and flashes over the Paladin's armor, catching old markings hidden beneath the grime.

Bram

Bram

Sun-Eaters... no wonder the chapel wanted him buried.

The Paladin goes very still. The sigil is not just a sign, it is a confession the Chapel wants erased.

The Paladin

The Paladin

That mark is mine. They named my order for the fires they blamed us for.

Bram

Bram

The Sun-Eaters. I have seen that sign in old ash records. They made a monster of your whole sect.

Ash drifts past the opening like grey snow. For the first time, the proof is not only against the hunter, but against the story that destroyed the Paladin's name.

Slaan

Slaan

How big is this place?

The Paladin looks from the cracked seam to the low stone ceiling, then back to Slaan. His answer stalls in his throat as ash trickles down between them.

The Paladin

The Paladin

Big enough for old prayers, hidden doors, and lies to be filed away. Small enough that the whole shrine feels one tremor from coming apart.

Bram glances toward the archway. Another thin rasp shivers through the rock outside, closer now, and the sound seems to press the chamber inward.

Bram

Bram

If there is a lower passage, it is not one I can see from here.

The Paladin crouches by the wall and brushes ash from the floor. A faint line in the dust suggests a seam, not stone.

The Paladin

The Paladin

That is not a wall. It is a seal.

His fingers hover over the hidden join as the crack above widens a little more, dropping a fresh curtain of ash into the chamber.

" one or both of you will have to open it"

Slaan lets the silence hang for a breath, then points at the seam. The Paladin and Bram both move at once, one bracing the stone, the other fitting his fingers into the ash-lined crack.

Slaan

Slaan

One of you opens it.

The Paladin digs his shoulder in. Bram hauls from the edge. The seal gives with a dry grind, and the hidden join splits open under their effort.

Cold air spills out from below. A narrow stair drops into blackness, its first steps dusted white with old ash and marked by the same pilgrim knot scratched into the soot.

The Paladin

The Paladin

There is more shrine below this one.

Bram

Bram

That passage is real. And it has been used.

Above them, the crack in the ceiling sheds another thin rain of grit. From the archway, the rasp outside drags closer, as if something has heard the seal break.

Slaan turns from the stair and asks Bram to go first. The request lands in the cold air between them as dust sifts from the crack overhead.

Bram

Bram

Not this way. If something waits below, I am the loudest target we have.

He shifts aside instead, angling his body toward the dark opening and then back toward the archway, weighing both threats at once.

The Paladin

The Paladin

This passage is older than the chapel above it. If the records were hidden anywhere, it would be here.

Bram crouches by the first step, brushes ash from the pilgrim knot, and uncovers a shallow groove in the stone where a seal or latch once sat.

Bram

Bram

This was opened before, then buried again.

A sharper scrape answers from beyond the archway, but the stair itself gives up one more thing, a thin draft carrying lamp-oil and old paper from deeper below.

The Paladin

The Paladin

There is a second path under the shrine, and it smells used. We can reach the truth, or we can run before that thing reaches us.

Slaan

You go first. Bram and I cover you.

The Paladin absorbs the order without argument, then shifts to the stair mouth, sword hand low and ready. Bram straightens beside the opening, giving the descent a quick, hard look.

The Paladin

The Paladin

If this is the buried way, then the chapel hid more than names.

Dust trickles from the ceiling crack as the Paladin sets one boot on the first step. The old latch-groove catches the light, and the ash-stung air pours up around him.

Bram

Bram

Go. We hold the top if the shrine decides to bite back.

Below, the dark stair swallows the Paladin's shadow. Behind them, the scrape at the archway shifts once more, closer, as if something has heard the decision.

Slaan gives Bram a quick, hard look, then slips past the Paladin and onto the stair. Her first step takes a skim of ash underfoot, and the chamber above coughs dust into her hair.

Slaan

Slaan

Bram, you stay up here.

Bram

Bram

Aye. I am on the lip if you need me.

The Paladin turns his shoulder to make room, letting Slaan take the lead below him. The hidden stair bends into colder dark, and the scrape at the archway drags closer behind the stone.

Below, the passage opens onto a lower landing at last. Slaan reaches it cleanly, but the dust costs her a breath and leaves a chalky sting on her lips.

The Paladin

The Paladin

If the chapel buried this stair, then it buried the answer with it.

Above, Bram holds the mouth of the stair, and below, Slaan sees the landing break toward a deeper corridor marked with old ash and a faint pilgrim knot scratched into soot. Behind them, the shrine gives one hard creak, and a fresh crack runs through the wall.

I descend the secret corridor

Slaan drops from the landing into the corridor below. The ash thins here, and her boots find packed stone instead of loose ruin.

The passage narrows around her, then straightens. Ahead, the old pilgrim knot is scratched again into the soot, small and deliberate, marking the way forward.

Slaan

Slaan

This way.

Above, the stair groans. Dust rains through the opening behind her, but the corridor holds.

The Paladin

The Paladin

Then the chapel hid more than a stair.

A hard scrape answers from the archway far behind them, muffled now by stone. Slaan reaches the corridor’s bend as cold air rolls past her face.

Bram

Bram

Go on, both of you. I will keep the mouth behind us.

I follow the pilgrim knot deeper

Slaan follows the pilgrim knot deeper, and the corridor answers with colder air and tighter stone. The soot mark repeats at shoulder height, as if someone has been guiding hasty hands through here for years.

She reaches a low turn where the passage opens into a cramped niche. A stone slab lies half-set in the wall, scraped bare around an old chapel seal, and a black smear of ash shows where it has been handled recently.

Slaan

Slaan

The mark is fresh.

Slaan shifts the slab just enough to read the cavity behind it. Bundled papers sit inside, tied with faded cord, and one leaf bears the Sun-Eaters' sigil crossed through in chapel ink.

The Paladin

The Paladin

That is not a burial mark. They struck my order from the records.

The stair behind them gives a wet crack, and a ribbon of dust sifts down through the opening. Far away, the scraping at the archway returns in a dull, patient rhythm.

Slaan tucks one proof sheet clear of the bundle as the loose cord snaps in her grip, spilling ash over the floor. The corridor now leads only forward into the dark, while the way back groans under the weight of the shrine.

Slaan lifts the leaf closer to the dim shaft of ash light and scans the first lines. The script swims, the soot smears, and the fresh dust turns in her breath.

Slaan

Slaan

The ink is half-ground into the paper.

Her thumb drags across the page. The brittle fiber tears with a sharp hiss, and the torn edge catches the loose bundle behind it.

A second sheet slips free, skates over the floor, and vanishes into the narrow gap by the wall crack. The hidden cache sheds ash like a disturbed nest.

The Paladin

The Paladin

Careful. Those records are older than the stone.

Slaan catches one line before the sheet twists away, enough to see a chapel hand naming pilgrim routes, and a note beside it, scrubbed hard as if someone tried to erase where the route truly led.

Then the corridor answers with a dry pop. Hairline cracks spread through the wall seam beside the niche, and a trickle of grit pours toward Slaan's boots. Behind them, the stair groans again, louder this time.

I grab Bram and flee the stair

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Slaan lunges, catches Bram by the sleeve, and yanks him clear of the niche as grit rains harder from the seam.

Bram stumbles into her shoulder, then turns with her toward the stair, the torn records left hissing under the falling dust.

The Paladin

The Paladin

Go. I will cover the back.

Behind them, the wall gives another sharp crack, and a fist-sized fragment skitters into the dark below.

Bram

Bram

That crack is widening. Move, both of you.

Slaan pulls Bram into motion at the stair mouth, and the three of them abandon the niche as ash sloughs from the seam.

From deeper in the shrine, the muffled scraping returns once, as if something beyond the arch hears them leaving.
