Dust hangs in the black passage. The Paladin steadies himself against the wall, one gauntlet on stone, while fresh grit rains from the broken ceiling. Ahead, something metal clicks in the dark.
Slaan crouches beside the narrow ledge, her dropped dagger recovered, the other still ready in her hand. Bram is gone beyond the collapse, his voice cut off by falling rock.

Slaan
The sound is close. Someone is waiting ahead.
A hooded figure shifts into the lamp glow at the edge of the passage, not Bram. A chapel token glints at their throat, and a drawn blade catches the light.

The Stranger
Too late. The chapel does not want witnesses.
The Paladin turns sharply toward the voice, armor scraping stone. Recognition and fury flash across him as the hidden blade proves what the records already said, the hunt is chapel-made.
The passage groans again. One path leads deeper into the mountain, the other is sealed by rubble. The next move decides whether Slaan survives the trap and who gets out with the truth.

“To the paladin, " these guys friendly?" I ask putting my daggers in their sheath”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Persuasion, rolled +1)

Slaan
Are these guys friendly?
Slaan answers the question with motion, sliding both daggers back into their sheaths as if the blade work itself can calm the corridor.

The Paladin
No. Not to us. Chapel steel does not wear kindly.
He keeps his body between Slaan and the hooded figure, but his tone eases a fraction, grim certainty replacing shock.

The Stranger
If you are asking whether I came to help, the answer is no. I came to see who survives the chapel's lie.
The stranger's blade remains lifted, yet the words are almost conversational, a practiced cruelty made quiet.

The Paladin
Then speak plainly. Where is Bram?
The stranger tilts their head toward the rubble-choked bend, and the lamplight catches soot on the wall, and the scratched pilgrim knot beyond it.

The Stranger
Behind the collapse, if he lives. If you want him, choose fast.
“I call Bram through the rubble”
FAILURE (Fair Willpower, rolled -2)

Slaan cups her hands to the broken seam and calls Bram’s name into the rubble. The sound dies almost at once, swallowed by stone and ash.
For a breath, nothing answers. Then a faint scrape comes back from the blocked bend, too weak to be a step, but enough to prove something is still moving beyond the collapse.
The Paladin shifts his weight and leans toward the gap, listening hard, while the Stranger’s blade lowers a fraction at the sound.

The Stranger
He hears you. He is pinned, not gone.
Ash slides from the cracked wall and reveals a sliver of dark cloth caught in the stones, just beyond reach, fluttering with the draft from the buried passage.

The Paladin
There. If the gap shifts any wider, we may pull him free.
The rubble settles with a low groan, opening a handspan more of the soot-marked passage, but only enough to tempt a reach, not a rescue.
“To the paladin " hey rusty dig out bram, I'll keep an eye on our friend"”
SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled +1)

Slaan
Hey, rusty. Dig out Bram. I keep watch on our friend.
The Paladin gives one sharp nod and turns to the loosened stones, setting both hands into the crack as he braces his boots against the floor.
Slaan shifts to the stranger’s flank, putting herself between the drawn blade and the widening gap in the rubble.
Stone grinds. A fist-sized wedge breaks free, and cold ash breathes through the soot-marked passage.

The Stranger
Careful. If that opening tears wider, everything behind it may come with it.
The Paladin keeps working anyway, jaw set, while another chunk shifts loose and the dark cloth beyond the gap flicks once in the draft.
The opening is now wide enough to reach through, and Bram’s trapped side of the passage is finally exposed to their hands.
“"Bram, you good?" I holler in”

Slaan
Bram, you good?

The Paladin
He should be. Hold the line a moment longer.

The Stranger
If he answers, don’t yank him free. The ash will bite back.

Bram
Alive. Dusty, but alive. Keep talking, I can find the opening.
“I ask the Stranger to help pull rubble back”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Persuasion, rolled +3)

Slaan
Help me pull the stones back.

The Stranger
Gladly. Bram’s voice means he can guide us from the other side.

The Paladin
Then we do this carefully. No sudden heaves.
The Stranger plants their sword point in the grit and leans in beside the Paladin, both of them gripping the loosened rubble with matching caution.

Bram
A little left. There’s a seam under the ash, I can feel it.
Stone scrapes stone. The gap widens just enough for a forearm, then a shoulder, and Bram’s dust-caked hand catches the light from below.

The Stranger
There. Easy now. Keep breathing, Bram.
