The rune gate hurls Slaan, Bram, Kaelith, and the Sun-Eater records into the Borrowlands archway in a wash of cold shadow. Dust spills from the cracked stone, and the ancient runes flicker like embers in a dying fire.
Slaan lands hard, still clutching the records. The bundle thrums against her chest, heavy as iron, as if the gate itself knows what she carries.

Kaelith
They followed the magic. We have only seconds.

Bram
Keep low. If they tracked us, this arch will be the first place they check.
Wind knifes through the broken archway. Beyond it, the Borrowlands stretch out in pale ruin, all stone, scrub, and distant black ridges.
Kaelith plants himself near the rune-lit threshold, blade ready, while Slaan steadies the records and feels the magic in them pulse in answer to the gate.

Slaan
The records are resonating with the gate.
For a breath, the runes brighten, then dim, as if waiting for Slaan to choose whether to hide the records, read the gate, or move before the light draws attention.

Slaan leaves Borrowlands Rune Gate behind and arrives at Khar.
“I start the travelers chant to open the gate to fire the kharduun, the gate outside of the irekie city of Khar , I multi cultural hub oasis in the harsh desert”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +1)

Slaan lifts her voice, and the travelers chant rolls under the arch, old syllables shaped to a gate between worlds. The runes answer at once, brightening from a faint pulse to a clean, steady burn.
The stone shivers. A seam of light opens in the archway, not wide, but enough for a careful hand and an unseen trail to slip through.
Bram freezes, head snapping toward the glow, while Kaelith shifts his stance to shield the opening. Dust lifts from the threshold in a sudden cold draft.
The Sun-Eater records go still against Slaan's chest, their earlier pulse fading into a muted thrum. The gate seems to drink that rhythm down and hold it.
Beyond the arch, Khar emerges in hard desert light, pale stone and scrub at the edge of an oasis road, with wind-worn walls and distant market roofs beyond.
A buried clasp inside the records clicks open by itself, and a folded strip of ash-stained vellum slips into Slaan's palm before the gate quiets again.

Folded ash-stained vellum strip
“" now we lay low, and figure out what's on these" I step off the gate I cover my hair per irekie custom”
SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled -1)

Slaan steps clear of the threshold and folds her hair back beneath her hood, the custom taking the edge off her outline. The archway’s glow settles behind her as she shifts the records into the crook of one arm, private now, unread by passing eyes.

Bram
That is wiser than standing in the open with chapel paper on your chest.

Kaelith
For the moment, the gate holds. We should use that mercy.
Bram crouches beside the stone and watches Slaan unwrap the folded vellum. Kaelith keeps his blade lowered, turning his body to screen them from the road while the Borrowlands light fades to a steady, watchful seam.

Bram
This seal was meant to be found here.
Slaan slips the ash-stained strip free and studies it in the lee of the arch. The records rest hidden against her robes, tucked tight and unremarked, while dust moves in slow drifts across the threshold.

Kaelith
If that note names where to go next, say so. If not, we still have a little quiet before the road remembers us.

Slaan leaves Khar behind and arrives at an inn.
“"Let's go find an inn to hold up in so we're not losing papers all over the desert" I tell the two”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +0)

The inn swallows them out of the road dust, low beams above, a peat fire banked behind a stone hearth. Slaan takes the records in both hands and sets them on the nearest table, where the wood is scarred but dry.

Bram
Good. Here, at least, the papers can breathe without the wind trying to take them.

Kaelith
And with a roof over us, we can stop pretending the road is our only shelter.
Bram eases into the bench opposite her, still watching the door by habit, while Kaelith chooses the window seat and keeps one eye on the street. The ash-stained vellum lies between them like a small, dangerous secret.

Bram
That strip came loose for a reason. I do not think it fell out to be harmless.

Kaelith
Then we read it here, seal the records again, and leave less of ourselves behind.
Slaan opens the folded vellum fully. One line is pressed deeper than the rest, a place name set beside a pilgrim knot and a tiny mark like a candle flame. Bram leans closer, surprised into silence.

Bram
That is a dead drop note, but it names an innkeeper's sign. We are already at the right door.
Kaelith lets out a quiet breath and taps the table once, measured and calm. The inn’s muffled noise presses around them, while the records remain dry, settled, and finally off the road.

Kaelith
Then ask the innkeeper for a room before night thickens. If this place is marked, we will know soon enough.

Ask the innkeeper for a room
“I walk up and in broken irekie I ask for a room”
SUCCESS (Good Persuasion, rolled -1)

Slaan rises from the table and crosses to the counter, the vellum still tucked safe with the records. The room hushes around her for a breath as the innkeeper looks up.

Slaan
Room, please. For us. If you have one.

Innkeeper
Broken Irekie, but clear enough. One room for three, then. Warm bed, extra lock on the door, and no questions unless you pay for them.
The innkeeper sets a brass key on the counter. Slaan's words cost her a scrape of effort, and the innkeeper's eyes linger on her hood and the ink-dark bundle at her side.

Innkeeper
You lot look like road trouble. Trouble sleeps lighter when it knows I am watching.

Bram
That sounds fair to me.

Kaelith
And safer than the road. We will take it.
The key slides toward Slaan. Behind them, the records stay on the table, untouched for the moment, while the fire pops softly in the hearth.
