The ridge tears loose behind Slaan. Snow and shale roar down into the pass, and the black vapor vent spits harder beneath it. Ahead, the slope drops toward the lowlands, but the iron scroll case jolts in the drift like something trying to wake.

Bram
Move! If that seam opens wider, we lose the records and the pass both.
Slaan braces on the frozen lip and drags the case free. The Sun-Eater records are still with them, but the ground shudders again, and a crack of light leaks through the snow behind the collapsing stone.

Dravin
That is no mere collapse. The node is surfacing. The Chapel was here for it all along.
A second tremor slams through the ridge. The iron case skids to Slaan's boots, and the black vapor thickens into a pulsing vein under the ice. Below, the pass is becoming a furnace under snow.

Lord Markul
Then their fraud is exposed. If the node breaks open here, every faction in this pass will be dragged into the same blaze.
Slaan reaches the crest with the records in hand. Behind her, the Chapel's trap and the awakening Chaos node are now one danger, and the only path forward is the lowlands.

“"where are we headed?!" I shout over the noise”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +1)

Slaan
Where are we headed?!

Dravin
Lowlands first. The records go to the capital path, before that node drags the whole pass open.

Lord Markul
Take the eastern drop. It skirts the fissure and reaches hard ground by dusk.
Bram yanks his gaze from the snow-choked slope and points downhill, where the way narrows between black rock and drifting ash.
Behind them, the rupture gulps light and hisses louder, but ahead the lowlands lie open, a thin route through the storm.
Above the ridge, a dark shape shifts against the snow, high enough to watch the pass without touching it.
Slaan gets the answer she needs, and the group snaps into motion toward the eastern drop, records secured against her side.

“I turn and grab Dravin " that wasn't a normal name scroll" I hook his leg in a controlled trip so I am standing over him." What kind of scroll was that" I demand”
SUCCESS (Good Melee Combat, rolled -2)

Slaan turns on Dravin in one clean motion, hooking his leg low and pulling him off balance. He hits the snow hard, and she lands over him before he can recover, the iron scroll case still tight against her side.

Slaan
That was not a normal name scroll. What kind of scroll was it?

Dravin
His calm cracks just enough to show concern. He glances at the case, then at Slaan above him. "A marked one. It carries a living trace, not just ink."

Bram
Slaan, behind you.
Bram’s warning cuts across the slope as loose snow sifts from the ridge. The shadowed figure above shifts again, and a second plume of black vapor coughs from the widening fissure.

Lord Markul
We have a path or we have cover, choose quickly.
Dravin lies pinned, one shoulder buried in ice, ash still dusting his glove. Beneath them, the pass groans open another handspan, and the air fills with cold smoke.

“I search Dravin for the marked scroll”
SUCCESS (Good Thievery, rolled +0)

Slaan’s hand slides over Dravin’s coat, quick and precise. From an inner seam she finds the marked scroll, thin as a blade and stamped with fresh ash. She draws it free before he can twist away.

Slaan
Marked with ash. Not just carried, hidden.
The scroll gives once under her fingers, as if something inside it still has weight. Dravin’s eyes snap to it, then up to Slaan, concern tightening into alarm.

Dravin
Do not open that here. If it is already keyed, they will feel the breach.
Bram shifts at the edge of the drift, still staring toward the ridge. Above them, the shadowed figure remains half-lost in snow haze, and the black vapor thickens along the split earth.

Lord Markul
Then we move with it, or we are buried with the proof.
The pass groans again. Snow sloughs from the slope, and the eastern drop opens into view through the smoke, a hard line leading down toward the lowlands.

“" What proof, that your own undead Lord sold you out to chaos? " I shout to Markul while looking Dravin in the eyes. "I'm confident my travel spell will work faster than either of your recall scrolls."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

Slaan
What proof do you have that your own undead lord sold you out to Chaos? I am confident my travel spell works faster than either of your recall scrolls.

Dravin
Enough proof to make that scroll dangerous. I did not come this far to die in a seal of ash and stone.

Lord Markul
Then speak plain, Dravin. If you hid a living trace from us, say why before the pass takes the choice away.

Dravin
Because someone on our side meant for the route to be found. The scroll is a lure, or a witness. I have not decided which.

Lord Markul
I do not sell my people to Chaos. If there is betrayal here, it wears a name I have not yet learned.
Bram lowers his bow a fraction, listening instead of watching the ridge. The black vapor keeps crawling from the fissure, but the three of them hold a tight little circle around Slaan and the ash-stamped scroll.

Dravin
If your spell can take us cleanly, use it. I would rather arrive accused than be swallowed here with the evidence.

Lord Markul
And if you are right, Slaan, we carry the proof together. No more splitting the chain.
Slaan leaves Northern Highlands mountain pass behind and arrives at Dragon Scale.
“"Markul and Bran grab my robes, and hold on" I use my traveler spell to the nearest gate, that location being outside of dragon scale.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -2)

Dragon Scale opens around them in a hard ring of stone and wind, a bare landing above the lowlands. Slaan drops in with the scroll tucked close, and the air feels thinner, colder, cleaner.
Bram and Dravin catch themselves at either side of her, boots skidding on grit. Lord Markul steadies one hand on the rock, then turns to scan the broken horizon behind them.

Dravin
If that was your travel spell, it still saved our lives. Let us breathe before we argue about the bill.

Lord Markul
We are out, for the moment. That is enough to speak plainly.

Bram
The ridge is still smoking. I do not like that it followed us this far.
Below them, the lowlands lie open under a pale strip of sky. Behind them, black vapor bruises the mountain pass, but no pursuers crest the ridge yet.

Lord Markul
Then we go before they learn where we landed. Slaan, keep the evidence together, and choose who carries it.
The ash-stamped scroll sits in Slaan’s hand as the others wait on her answer, all three looking to her for the next move.
