The thicket tightens around Slaan, Bram, and the Paladin. Twisted trunks lean together overhead, and the eastbound trail narrows to a thread of trampled leaves and bent grass.

Bram
There. Fresh. He turned here, then circled back to hide his tracks.
Bram crouches beside a patch of moss, brushing away ash-gray grit. Under it, a heel mark cuts clean through the damp, and a strip of false road cloth snags on a thorn.

The Paladin
The hunter wants us following. He is leading us where he chooses.

Slaan
The cloth matches the altar scrap.
A branch ahead shifts, not from wind but from a body easing aside. Through the leaves, Slaan catches a flash of pilgrim tan over dark leather, the false colors of the killer.

The Hooded Hunter
Too slow. The chapel sent the wrong hound, and the right one still bleeds in its kennel.
He bolts deeper into the thicket, and the trail becomes a live pursuit, proof at last that the murder at the shrine is tied to the High Chapel's lie.

“Moving my fingers on both hands for silent casting as a mage assassin, I cast steal breath, a spell that snares the target and slows him down and cast blind on him”
SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled +1)

Slaan’s fingers shift in a silent weave. The air ahead tightens around the hooded hunter, and his next breath catches short in his chest.
She follows with a second sign, and shadow-flare skims his eyes. He staggers, one hand flying up as the thicket blurs around him.

The Hooded Hunter
What did you do?
Bram snaps upright from the moss, and the paladin surges forward with sword half-drawn, the armor markings flashing pale through the leaves.

The Paladin
Now. Cut off his path.
The hunter reels deeper into the roots, blind and choking, forced into the open lane between two ash-scarred trunks.
At the base of one trunk, the pilgrim knot scratched in soot catches the light, and the hunter’s boot skids beside it as he tries to flee straight past the waiting blade line.
“Already casting I let shadow bolt, a spell that stuns and that does cold damage”
SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled -1)

Slaan releases the spell. A black lance snaps through the lane of trees, cold enough to silver the hunter’s breath.
It strikes him square in the chest. He jerks rigid, boots scraping ash and root as the shock seizes his body.

The Hooded Hunter
No, wait!
His run collapses into a stagger. He slams one shoulder into an ash trunk and drops to one knee, stunned and gasping.
Bram and the paladin close the gap, the paladin’s marked armor flashing pale through the leaves as he cuts off the lane.
The pilgrim knot on the trunk sits between them like a witness, soot-dark against the bark.
The hunter is down, but the cast leaves Slaan’s fingers numb and a sharp crack of magic rings out through the thicket.

“"oy , follow the bull smell you find bullshit." And I search the hunter”
SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled +1)

Slaan steps in close while the hunter is still reeling, her gaze moving fast over his coat, belt, and sleeves. Ash dusts her fingers as she searches him with practiced care.
One hidden seam gives under her touch. A folded scrap and a narrow token slip free into her palm, both stamped with chapel marks and smeared with road grime.

Slaan
Bull smell. This is the bullshit.
The token bears the same false road colors Bram warned of, and the scrap carries a pilgrim knot cut into the wax. It is proof, plain enough to pin the blame on the chapel's hand.

The Paladin
Show me.
The paladin halts beside the trunk, sword lowered now, armor markings catching the pale wash through the leaves as he studies what Slaan has found.

The Hooded Hunter
No... not that.

SUCCESS (Mediocre Intimidation, rolled +0)

Slaan
You got more on you?
Slaan keeps the token low and the scrap higher, just enough to catch the hunter’s eye. Her voice stays flat, but the words land like a blade turned in a wound.

The Hooded Hunter
...Under the hem. Left side. If I lie, search me again.
The hunter swallows hard and twists his shoulder, giving her the seam without another fight. Ash shakes loose from his cloak onto the roots.

The Paladin
He is speaking. Good. Let him keep doing that.
The paladin shifts one step closer, armor markings pale in the chapel light, his sword still down but ready. He watches Slaan’s hand more than the hunter’s face.

The Hooded Hunter
I was paid to wear the colors and point the road. That chapel scrap was not meant for your eyes.

The Hooded Hunter
And there is a second token, sealed in wax. If I hand it over, they know I broke.

“I jag his leg with a dagger to get his attention " how bout you hand over your tokens will ya?"”
SUCCESS (Good Melee Combat, rolled +0)

Slaan’s dagger flashes low, and the hunter jerks with a sharp hiss as steel kisses his leg. He stumbles against the ash tree, breath cracking. The hidden seam spills open under the motion.

Slaan
Hand over the tokens.
The hunter’s fingers go white at the hem. Waxed cloth and a second stamped token tumble free into Slaan’s reach, clattering against the roots beside the pilgrim knot.

The Hooded Hunter
Enough, enough... take it. Just stop cutting.
The paladin shifts in behind Slaan, armor markings catching the light again as he spots the token. His jaw tightens, but he does not move to finish the man off.

The Paladin
That seal, it matches the chapel.
Ash drifts over Slaan’s hand as she secures the token. The hunter presses a palm to his leg, breathing hard, while something in the brush behind him snaps once, quietly, as if answered from deeper in the thicket.
