The tunnel opens into a damp chamber, wider than the cramped passages behind them. Ozone stings the air, mixed with old ash and stone rot. Ahead, the dark splits, one path slanting up toward faint draft, the other sinking deeper where the air bends strangely.
Behind them, faint scraping answers from the tunnel they fled. The chamber’s walls sweat with moisture, and the pilgrim knot carved on one stone seems newly cut, as if someone marked this place for a purpose.

The Paladin
Surface. Quickly. The Chapel will seal any trail it finds.

Bram
And if we run uphill blind, we may run straight into their hands.

The Stranger
The deeper route is wrong, which is why it may be the right one.
Slaan studies both ways. The upward draft promises escape, but the deeper path thrums with unstable magic and some half-buried answer waiting in the dark.

Reach the surface
“"what's in the hole?" I ask the stranger”
SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled +1)
Slaan angles her dagger tip toward the deeper opening, then stills, waiting for the answer instead of moving on.

The Stranger
The hole? Old chapel work. It was not meant for walking, it was meant for hiding things.

The Stranger
Records, tokens, sometimes a body. More often a secret someone wanted buried with ash over it.

Slaan
What kind of secret?

The Stranger
The kind that keeps people obedient. The kind that makes a path look like a grave until you know the knots.

Bram
So the Chapel really did build its own maze under the shrine.
The Stranger glances at the soot-marked passage, then back to Slaan, their mouth tilting in a tired half-smile.

The Stranger
If you mean to survive the dark below, I can tell you where it bends. If you mean to leave the Chapel behind, I can tell you which way the lies came from.
“" we don't need religion, we've found the light." We head up.”
