Nobles shout over one another as steel rings in the king's chamber. Slaan stands in the center, the confession raised high, while the Stern Cleric pushes through the crush of robes and guards toward the scroll case.

King Steven

King Steven

Enough. Read it aloud, and let the court hear what it has hidden.

Bram

Bram

Do not let him take it, Slaan. This is the proof.

Lord Markul

Lord Markul

Hold the line. If the Church falls here, others will reach for the gap.

The Stern Cleric snaps a hand toward the nearest guards, trying to turn the room's fear into obedience. Several nobles recoil, but a few edge closer to the throne, reading weakness in the noise.

A sharp knock sounds at the side doors. Two cloaked courtiers slip in under the uproar, moving too calmly for frightened witnesses. One lifts a seal ring, the mark of a lesser house.

A Pale Clerk

A Pale Clerk

The seal is wrong. They are not here for judgment, they are here for the opening.

The chamber tilts toward a breaking point, proof in Slaan's hand, the Church exposed, and strangers moving to exploit the fracture before King Steven can command the room.

Slaan drops the confession from view and snaps her hand toward the Stern Cleric. Shadow lashes across his face, swallowing his breath and the words in his mouth.

He staggers blind into two guards, hands clawing at nothing, then locks up as the silence takes him. The scroll case slips from his reach and thuds to the floorboards.

The nearest nobles recoil from the sudden dark, and Bram lunges between the fallen cleric and the papers. Lord Markul turns his head, already reading the room's panic.

Seal the side doors. Now.

A Pale Clerk

Watchers... that is what they named the breach.

One cloaked courtier freezes at the threshold, their seal ring catching torchlight. The other hesitates just inside the chamber, forced to choose between the throne and the exit.

On the floor, the ash-stamped scroll lies exposed for a heartbeat, but the cleric cannot speak, cannot point, cannot claim it. The room's fear turns toward the strangers instead.

Prevent the Stern Cleric from seizing the confession

As Bram recovers the case, I explain the plot that the hidden chaos sect has enacted, starting with the framing of the paladin and add every part of me and Brams journey along the way including the betrayal Lord Markul took from his trusted intelligence master Dravin. With it leading us here.

Slaan lets the room see the confession only in pieces, then speaks over the silence she just made. Her words stitch the paladin’s false charge to the hidden sect, the dead route, the baited safe houses, and the hands that guided them here.

Bram hauls the scroll case toward him, keeping his body between the floor and the nearest courtiers. The ash-stamped scroll vanishes under his arm, while the fallen cleric still cannot point, warn, or claim it.

The whole court has been steered like a herd. If this is true, the rot reaches farther than I thought.

Slaan names the long chain plainly, from the framed paladin to Dravin’s betrayal, and then to Lord Markul’s grim turn against a trusted intelligence master. The chamber listens, one breath at a time, as the web becomes a map instead of a rumor.

Lord Markul

Lord Markul

Dravin sold me a route and a lie. If this stands, I drag the lie into daylight myself.

A Pale Clerk

A Pale Clerk

Watchers. That is the word they used for the breach, and now I hear it everywhere.

That recognition moves through the chamber faster than fear. Several courtiers turn toward the side doors, while the guards close ranks and the throne dais steadies into a hard, shared focus.

Slaan’s shadow lashes out before the courtiers can slip back into the doorway. Dark veils spill over both cloaks at once, stealing their sight and turning their balance against them.

Spectral bands snap up around their arms and chests, tightening with a cold, silent grip. One seal ring drops and skitters across the floor boards.

What is this? Guards, move!

Cloaked Courtier Two

I cannot see the door.

The guards do not rush past the king. They seal the side doors harder, spearpoints crossing as the chamber chooses a side.

King Steven

No one leaves until I know who brought this poison into my hall.

Bram keeps the confession low and close while Lord Markul turns on the trapped courtiers, fury sharpened into purpose. The ash-stamped scroll stays hidden, but every eye in the room now knows where to look.

I go up and search both men

Slaan slips in close while the courtiers are still tangled in shadow. Her hands work fast at their belts and sleeves, searching under cloaks and inside stitched hems.

From Cloaked Courtier One she draws a thin wax key and a folded court pass. Cloaked Courtier Two hides a sealed note, its edge stamped with ash.

Slaan

Slaan

Ash.

Bram shifts to give her room, keeping the confession low. Lord Markul watches the doorway, ready to pounce if either captive wriggles free.

They came armed with papers, not blades... watchers use papers.

The wax key glints in Slaan's palm, and the folded note gives once under her thumb, promising more names than the court has heard.

Slaan lifts the recovered pieces into the chamber light and turns them so the king can see every edge.

The wax key catches the torch glow first, then the court pass, then the ash-stamped note as it opens enough to show a seal mark beneath the fold.

Bring them here. Slowly.

Bram tightens his grip on the confession bundle, keeping the papers low as the room leans toward Slaan's hands.

Watchers use papers. That seal is not court issue.

Slaan extends the items within Steven's reach, and the king takes the note without looking away from the ash stamp.

King Steven

This seal belongs to my chamber, not the Church's record room.

The chamber goes still around the admission, but Slaan's sleeve brushes a bench edge and tears on a splinter, drawing a thin red line across her wrist as the court stares.

Then read it aloud, before they decide to lie again.
