Breaking the Chain at Pier Nine

Dallas reaches the upper loading level and finds the junction box trembling on its mount, the red pulse crawling through the conduit like a vein under skin. The whole pier stack answers with a low, ugly shiver.

The pulse is timed. If he breaks the feed here, the stack stops singing.

Murderbone plants himself by the grating, teeth bared at the far end of the catwalk. Below, the generator thuds once, then again, like something huge trying to wake up through the floor.

That box is the heartbeat. Cut the wrong lead and the pier goes with it.

Dallas swings the junction cover open. Inside, fresh splices snake into a timer relay and a bank of tagged cables, one of them running back toward the stack controls. Bishop has built a chain, not a trap door, and the chain ends here.

Then I break the chain.

He yanks the tagged cable free and sparks spit into the salt air. The red pulse stutters across the box, then drops into a harsh, uneven blink as the stack gives one long groan above them.
