The records oversight office hums with cheap fluorescent light and stale paper dust. Chair legs scrape in the aisle, the frosted door stays open to the corridor, and the air smells of ink, sweat, and old glue.
Dallas Fontaine stands over the captured intruder while Clara keeps the aisle covered. Murderbone crowds the doorway, hackles low, eyes fixed on the hall.

Clara
He is not the only one. I heard steps below, fast ones.

Dallas Fontaine
Desk Nine is still in play, and somebody is moving to protect it.
A muted thump travels up through the floorboards, then another, from somewhere deeper in the building. The frosted glass shivers with a passing shadow in the corridor.

The Captured Intruder
You should have walked away. Hart does not leave loose ends.
Clara drags the chair farther across the aisle, turning the cluttered office into a choke point. Murderbone growls once, sharp and warning, at the shadow beyond the door.
Dallas spots a service key clipped to the intruder's belt and a ledger stub half crushed beneath his shoe, both pointing farther down, toward the stairwell.
“I snag the service key and ledger. I tell the captured clerk " O is that so, coincidence neither do i" i discharge my revolver in the most politely correct way. I unalive him.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Firearms, rolled +0)

Dallas hooks the service key and ledger free in one clean motion, then turns the revolver on the man beneath him. The shot is small in the cramped room, but it ends the struggle at once.
The intruder goes slack, his defiance collapsing into stillness. Clara flinches, then steadies her grip on the chair as the echo dies in the paper dust.
Murderbone holds the doorway, eyes locked on the corridor, while Dallas lowers the gun and checks the fallen man's belt. The service key comes loose. The ledger stub lies where it fell.
Clara swallows hard and glances from the body to Dallas. Below them, the footsteps keep moving, measured now, climbing toward the stairwell.
Dallas pockets the key and scoops up the ledger stub, then looks toward the open frosted door. The hall beyond waits in gray light and bad intentions.

Clara
That buys us a name, maybe a route. It does not buy us time.
Murderbone gives one low growl, not at the body, but at the corridor. The building has gone very quiet except for the footsteps below and the thin rattle of the chair in the aisle.

Ledger stub
“I go to Desk Nine”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -2)

Dallas rises from the body and crosses the office in two quick strides, key and stub tucked tight in his palm. The chair barricade stays wedged in place behind him.
He reaches Desk Nine and sweeps the top surface with one gloved hand, then the drawer front. Dust, routing stamps, and a smear of fresh paper fibers answer back.

Dallas Fontaine
The stamp trail is still live.
The bent keycard catches under the drawer lip. Dallas works it once, then again, and the lock gives with a dry click.
Inside, he finds Hart's working log and a thin envelope marked with Desk Nine routing stamps. He takes them fast, but the edge of the drawer bites his knuckles.
Clara leans in from the barricade, relief tight on her face. Murderbone stays planted at the door, watching the corridor like a guard dog carved from iron.

Clara
You have it. Now move before the stairwell sends someone else up.
“I go to Desk Nine”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)

Dallas leaves the drawer open and moves to Desk Nine with the log under his arm, the chair barricade and frosted door held in the edges of the room behind him.
He spreads Hart's working log beside the envelope, then lines the ledger stub against the routing stamps, reading the paper trail as if it were a crime scene.

Dallas Fontaine
Desk Nine is the choke point.
The stamps match the log entries. Hart's approvals, copies, and transfer marks all point to this office, this drawer, this handoff.

Clara
So that's his throat. Cut the paper, and he stops breathing.
Murderbone holds the doorway, ears fixed on the corridor, while the office stays quiet except for the rasp of paper and the old building settling around them.
Dallas closes the loop on the page, and the route ends where Desk Nine begins.
“I out the evidence up and enter the office revolver up”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +1)

Dallas gathers the log, envelope, stub, and keycard into one tight stack, then slips them under his coat. His revolver comes up in his other hand as he turns from Desk Nine.
The move is clean, deliberate, and final. The paper trail is no longer spread across the desk, it is on Dallas now.

Clara
He is done reading. Now he is choosing.
Dallas steps into the office aisle, muzzle level, eyes tracking the frosted door and the ajar corridor beyond it.
The dog shifts from the threshold to Dallas's flank, matching his pace without a sound.
Clara eases back from the barricade, one hand hovering near the chair as if to hold it or abandon it on Dallas's signal.

Clara
If Hart wants the room, he can come through this mess.
At the far end of the corridor, the ajar door stays open a fraction wider, and the office falls into a hard, waiting silence.
“I move on Hart at the corridor door”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Dallas glides to the corridor door before anyone can reset the room. The frosted panel gives him only shadows, but the ajar door beyond it stays slightly open, like someone left a finger in the lock.
He slips through the gap and clears the threshold in one smooth motion, revolver leading, coat brushing the frame. The hallway yields, empty for the instant it takes him to claim it.

Dallas Fontaine
Hart's not in the office.
Murderbone pads up behind him, stopping at his boot heel. Clara holds position at the barricade, eyes locked down the corridor, one hand still near the chair.

Clara
There. At the stairwell.
At the far end, a half-seen figure vanishes past the turn, and the sound of hurried shoes cuts off below. The ajar door swings wider in the draft, showing the stairwell landing and the dark drop beyond.

Clara
Go. I have the room.
“I head aft”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -2)

Dallas cuts aft, boots whispering over the corridor boards as he commits to the stairwell. The open door behind him throws a hard slice of light across the hall, and the bent keycard bumps once under his coat.
He reaches the landing and takes the first steps down without hesitating. The stairwell smells of paper dust and wet concrete, and the footsteps below are already fading into the building's lower levels.

Dallas Fontaine
Hart's trail goes downstairs.
Clara stays at the threshold above, one hand on the chair brace, watching the corridor while Murderbone slips to Dallas's side on the landing. The office light behind them flickers against the frosted glass.

Clara
Take the stairs. I'll hold this door.
Dallas reaches the lower turn, where the stairwell opens toward the records level and a service gate stands chained in the side passage. The ledger stub from the intruder presses warm against his palm, and fresh movement stirs somewhere out of sight below.
Ahead, the next landing waits in shadow, half-hidden by the rail. Whoever ran from Desk Nine just vanished into that dark, and the building gives Dallas one clean path after him.
“I head after hart”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -3)

Dallas takes the stairs hard, and the lower landing catches him in a blur of rail, shadow, and stale paper air. His shoulder clips the wall, but he keeps moving, the evidence still pinned under his coat.
Murderbone surges past his knee and cuts the angle below, forcing the fleeing man to commit to the basement corridor. The chase stops being a guess. Hart's runner is in sight.

Dallas Fontaine
He is heading for the records level.
Ahead, the corridor opens under a weak strip of light. The chained service gate hangs to one side, and the ajar door at the far end gives a thin, restless draft.
Dallas closes the distance enough to see the target's back vanish past the threshold. The man does not look back, but his hurried turn scrapes the wall and throws a file page spinning to the floor.
Dallas snatches the page on the move, and the paper cuts his knuckle clean through the skin. It is stamped with Desk Nine routing marks, fresh enough to still feel slick.

Clara
If he makes the next door, he disappears into the building.
Dallas keeps after him, blood ticking from his hand onto the stair tread behind him, while the corridor ahead waits for his next choice.
“Is Hart still ahead of me?”
YES (VeryLikely, rolled 52)

Dallas pauses at the threshold, his breath hitching as he catches the distinct, rhythmic click of a heavy office door latching shut just ahead.

Dallas Fontaine
He is still in there, and he is locking the room from the inside.
Through the frosted glass of the office door, a single shadow shifts, confirming Hart is trapped within the very records oversight office he used to orchestrate the purge.
“I kick open the door and take a position next to the door in case he is armed and fires”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -1)
Dallas drives his boot into the office door. The latch blows free, the panel slams inward, and he slides to the hinge side in one clean motion, revolver up, body tucked close to the frame.
The room answers with a hard crack. Paper jumps from a desk, and a bullet punches splinters from the far wall where Dallas had been standing a heartbeat before.
Hart is already moving behind the desk, half-crouched, one hand buried under a stack of files, the other jerking back from a pistol he has not fully cleared yet.

Dallas Fontaine
He was waiting for the break.
Murderbone rushes in at Dallas's flank, teeth bared, fixing on Hart and forcing him to twist away from the doorway.

Hart
Drop it, Fontaine. You do not walk out of this office with that ledger.
Dallas stays posted tight to the frame, gun steady, while the open door hangs wide between him and Hart's desk. The ledger stub and Desk Nine papers lie in plain view, and Hart has nowhere clean to move.
“I shove the desk into Hart pinning him from loading the pistol. Murderbone engages.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +0)
Dallas drives the desk forward. Hart loses his balance, his pistol hand pinned under a burst of papers as the edge slams into his chest and traps him against the wall.
The pistol skitters sideways, useless now. Hart grunts, folded and jammed behind the desk with nowhere clean to draw.
Murderbone hits him low at the same moment, teeth closing on Hart’s wrist and dragging the arm down hard.

Hart
Get off me.

Dallas Fontaine
The log is pinned. So is he.
Clara holds at the broken doorway, white-knuckled and rigid, while loose Desk Nine sheets slide off the desk and settle around Hart’s shoes.
Hart strains once, then goes still under the weight of the desk, the dog, and Dallas’s gun trained center mass.
“I ask Hart where is covington?”
SUCCESS (Legendary Interrogation, rolled -2)

“I ask Hart where is covington?”
SUCCESS (Legendary Interrogation, rolled -2)

Dallas Fontaine
Where is Covington?

Hart
Upstairs. Records oversight. Desk Nine, if he has not run.
Hart spits blood and paper dust, then jerks his chin toward the hall, giving the answer through clenched teeth.

Hart
You wanted the chain, Fontaine. That is the man at the top of it.
Murderbone tightens his grip at Hart’s wrist, and the desk groans as Hart tries, then fails, to pull free.

Clara
Then we go there cleanly, and we do not leave papers for him to hide behind.
Clara’s voice is steadier now. The ledger stub and Desk Nine sheets lie scattered at Hart’s feet, and Dallas’s knuckles burn where the desk edge jammed them against the wood.
“I ask Hart where is covington?”

Dallas Fontaine
Where is Covington?

Hart
Upstairs, records oversight. Desk Nine, if he has not run.
Hart’s answer hangs in the stale office air. Clara studies him a beat, then Dallas, the ledger stub still between them like proof.

Clara
Then we finish it there. No more paper shields.
“I tell Hart " since you're the asshole that fucked up my team it's only fitting you go out task force Odin style." I put my knife between his ribs and tell him "the injury i have just inflicted is known as traumatic intrathoratic tension pneumothorax. Basically you can breathe in but not out. So from here the affected lung will be totally destroyed but not before the expanding lung crushes your good lung and the two put pressure on your heart resulting in confusion, disorientation from lack of blood to your brain. Your blood pressure will drop followed by cardiac arrest. But we still have a couple minutes together. I old his hand and play the Police every breathe you take. Singing along cheerfully "I'll be watching you"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Psychology, rolled +2)

Dallas Fontaine
Since you're the bastard who burned my team, it only fits you go out Task Force Odin style.
Dallas drives the knife in under Hart's ribs, not deep, just enough to lock the man in place. Hart jerks and sucks for air, eyes wide with the first clean truth of what is happening.

Dallas Fontaine
Traumatic intrathoracic tension pneumothorax. You can breathe in, but not out. The lung collapses, the other gets crushed, then the heart gives up.
Hart trembles as Dallas lays out every step in a flat, clinical voice. Clara stays frozen at the doorway, seeing the sentence land harder than the blade.
Dallas catches Hart's hand and holds it in a firm, almost courteous grip. The old Police track starts under his breath, soft and off-key in the broken office.

Dallas Fontaine
I'll be watching you.
Hart's glare gutters into panic, then into pleading as he fights the rising pressure in his chest. Murderbone stands rigid at Dallas's side, unmoving, while Clara looks from Hart to Dallas and back, pale but steady.

New Gift: Forgery Detection Specialist

The office went still except for the corridor steps gathering in the dark.

Clara
We got the trail. That's enough for tonight.

Dallas Fontaine
Enough to leave them a body and a paper trail.
Murderbone held the door, a low warning in his throat.
Dallas tucked the ledger and envelope inside his coat and moved before the building could close its jaws around him. Hart was dead, Covington was exposed, and the museum's neat little machine had finally started to grind against itself. By the time the city swallowed their footsteps, the night belonged to the ones who had survived it.
