The boathouse service bay breathes oil, rain, and old salt. Mud tracks cut straight through the floor toward a steel inner door, already propped from the other side. Dallas Fontaine steps in with Murderbone at his heel, and the place answers with a soft metallic click.

Jackson Temple holds the yard outside in the fog, a shadow with a radio. Inside, a Clean Collar cleanup man rises from behind stacked crates, one hand on a pistol, the other on a portable file case stamped for records transfer.

Stop right there. You walk out, maybe you live. You take that evidence, and we all die tired.

The case is bait. The lock on the inner door is newer than the frame.

Murderbone lowers his head and growls at the man, then shifts his weight toward the door, reading the trap before Dallas says a word. The cleanup man glances toward the inner room, nervous now, because he is not alone in there.

They said you’d come hard. They didn’t say you’d bring a dog.

A second sound answers from the shadows, the scrape of a chair leg and the steady drip of water off a raincoat sleeve. Someone waits deeper in the boathouse, patient as a undertaker. The cleanup man tightens his grip, and the whole exit narrows to a gun barrel and a choice.

Dallas stands at the center of it all, evidence in hand, Murderbone braced beside him, the fogged yard and the black water behind him, the unseen gunman ahead. One move breaks the trap. One move ends Far Harbor.

Dallas lets the silence sit on the cleanup man like a hand on the throat. The pistol wavers. The file case dips. Murderbone stays low, a growling shadow at Dallas’s side.

Put it down. Walk away from the case.

The cleanup man swallows. His bravado cracks first, then his knees. He eases the pistol to the floor and slides the file case toward Dallas with two fingers.

I am not paid enough for this room.

From the inner room, the hidden figure shifts once, then goes still again. Jackson’s radio crackles faintly from the fog outside, but he does not come in. He trusts Dallas to finish it.

Hands where I can see them.

The cleanup man obeys, palms up, face shining with rain and panic. Dallas takes the case, and the tension in the bay loosens by a degree. The trap is still there, but the man holding one end of it is done fighting.

Murderbone steps between Dallas and the crates, guarding the new surrender. In the open service door, fog rolls across the mud tracks and washes the bay in gray. The cleanup man stands trembling, waiting for Dallas’s next move.

Take the case. I am done here.

Smart move. Stay breathing.

Fog's thick. You got your window, Dallas.

Then I'm taking it.

The service bay went quiet except for the tide and the drip of rot from the beams.

Dallas Fontaine left Far Harbor with the file case under his arm and no reason to look back. The boathouse kept its ghosts, but the evidence was no longer one of them. Behind him, the fog swallowed the yard and the night closed cleanly over what had been taken.
